I first saw Robben in LA at Donte’s on Lankershim Blvd. Back then (1978) he played a cherry 335 through a Mesa Boogie. What a sound. I’d never heard a guitar player mix blues and jazz the way he did. Russell Ferrante played piano that night. It was the early days of what would become The Yellowjackets.
In my humble opinion: lead playing and rhythm playing goes hand in hand. One cannot be a good lead guitar player without being great at playing rhythm. Thanks for the upload.
Stop being lazy, I bought his true fire courses and they come with tabs, guitar pro files and chord charts....so no excuses, he is a great teacher and an inspiring human being.....I met him and shook his hands...I also can confirm that he is actually human.....although he seemed to levitate once onstage!!
I love it when he sings the intervals in scales.... Makes so much sense in understanding chords and how they are constructed. Plus his tone on ANY guitar is SUBLIME... though my favourite is his 50s gold top!
I have leaned so much from these videos. Thanks Robben for your generosity and inspiration. I love your music and appreciate the care you have put on sharing your experience and knowledge.
I went to see Steve Morse in the early 90's. Didn't know who the headliner was. Robben Ford came on and blew my freakin mind! it was one hell of an introduction to a great guitar player.
This guy is (to me) the king of clean. Whenever l hear him play an electric guitar he never has an ounce of gain, not even a sniff actually. Most RUclipsrs (l know he is a famous musician also), ’use overkill amounts of gain’ whereas he is a cool clean cat indeed.
Yes.....this is what I like about Robben. In 1982 Robben had class at MI in Hollywood. I was there as a drummer...but would sit in on his classes...always said "Pocket + Groove"....ron castro
Legend for so many decades. I am on true fire studying again except with 3 fingers. Lost the pinky 8 years ago. Chords are the toughest I am also studying Tony Iommis finger design he made out of soap bottle plastic and leather.
this is a teaser video to promote the purchasable lessons at truefire or Robben's guitar dojo...so the angles are intentional. follow links in the description.
"Pebber Brown" is the best I've seen for learning the neck and build the muscles. Sites on Theory are numerous and difficult to sort out. Find one that starts with the key of C and go from there.
Ford is constantly disrespected by all of these self proclaimed "experts" who publish lists of the top all time greatest guitarists. At a minimum I would rank him in the top 20 and it could be argued possibly even in the top 10 all time greats. Ford is unique in that he's not a pure jazz player or pure blues player or pure fusion player or pure rock player but he plays all of those genres of music exceptionally well. There aren't many other guitarists who can do that.
Steve W He’s a real pariah for sure. I’m a fan of Ford but, he doesn’t really stick out. He’s always on the pocket ya know. Other guitarists have their own things that set them apart. Gary was just ferocious, it’s almost primal when he gets into his zone. SRV is a perfect player, it all comes out as if it was the studio version. Chuck Berry has all the tricks and knows when to utilize them for maximum effect. Roy Buchanan was unassumingly vicious. Derek Trucks is the greatest slide player of all time. Hendrix is the GOAT, whole different plain. Robben just fails to excite in a carved out path I think. He’s great tho 🤙🏽
@@VoodooApex i feel the exact opposite. for me fords playing sticks out way more than moore - that being said i discovered gary moore quite late and listened to all the other blues giants before and didnt feel that he was unique in comparison, same with joe bonamassa. maybe i would feel different if i grew up with him, or discovered him first. however there is one thing that annoys me with ford its that his bands always sound like they come straight from dr.rhythm, especially on talk to your daugther it feels like he is playing some royalty free backing tracks of the youtube - just in 1988.
It would be fantastic if Robben Ford could even write an ebook on harmony, chords (with good patterns of voicings) and scales from beginner knowledge to intermediate amateur guitarists, for example. It seems that you don't have to be a virtuoso like Robben Ford to write a book like this, but I think his experience guarantees better knowledge. His knowledge and skills are precious
Thanks again. I studied music a long time ago, but life took a turn in another direction so I didn't pursue it.. Lots of cobwebs by this time. Interesting to dust off a few. Kind of like finding a little piece of your lost self.
Robben, I've seen a few of other videos, but never one concentrating on rhythms. I've always gravitated to rhythm guitar playing and CHORDS. Never was real interested in lead or soloing, except when I solo, I play solow, nobody can hear me. Anyway, I would appreciate it if you could suggest other rhythm or chordal videos you have on U-tube. Thanks a million.
Pretty sure it's a Dunlop dual-design StrapLok. The extended length is so you can use either the lock (which Robben is using) or put the strap on the button conventionally.
I have no idea who this guy is.. just stumbled onto a couple of guitar lessons on RUclips and he is amazing. Can anyone recommend any albums of his? Is he a studio musician or part of a band that I've missed? I'd really like to hear more, so I guess I'll keep searching RUclips - any information you guys could give will be appreciated. Cheers.
You'd be suprised at how using your ears to figure stuff out helps you as a musician. On many levels. This is not advanced harmony in any way. If you're struggeling with it you need to go back and watch videos on basic theory first. Don't declare him a bad teacher just because he's explaning musical ideas that you're not able to appreciate yet.
Well, my understanding is that these videos are taken from his truefire course. A number of people can just get all the information they need from this video. And if they can't, they just try a couple of positions until it sounds right. I guess if you get the full course you will find all the tabs and everything. But really, there an awful lot of information you can get for free here.
I agree. Chords are essential. Don't slow down the lesson. I like this speed. Not a lot of BS.Gotta know some theory. There are other sites for theory.
try martty shorts hes great for in the middle guitar playing and has tabs and eveything. also there some killer guys i found that i use to go back and make sure i never forget, even tho its not killer stuff, cuz its all needed for guitar playing, in my likes. your welcome to take a gander.
Its great to say all these things but would have liked a bit of closer inspection of what finger patterns where being used. The camera angle wasn't really clear. The only value of the lesson is that i should pursue chords. Cool ill just now go google someone who can show me.
why? maybe 'cause he didn't tab it all out or point at every note like "fourth string twentyseventh fret hammered on from thirteenth fret"? He gave you the names of the chords and played them for you, that's enough for figuring it out. Btw I started paying more attention to those shapes lately and yes they sound
I could listen to Robben Ford for hours and hours ; he is a true master of the guitar
Me too
Ted greene!
yesss - same with Me ! :))

When Angus Young started playing he only played lead.
I completely agree with you, what's music without a strong sense of rhythm?
One of my favorite musician all time
God I love the tele sometimes the first idea is simply and forever THE best
Stop being lazy, I bought his true fire courses and they come with tabs, guitar pro files and chord charts....so no excuses, he is a great teacher and an inspiring human being.....I met him and shook his hands...I also can confirm that he is actually human.....although he seemed to levitate once onstage!!
I needed this comment. Thanks dude lol
I met Robben also, seemed like a real dude, no pretenses. I shook his hand as well. Inspiring dude.
You shook both of his hands? Very metro!
...................................... oh ...................... you too~?~
I can honestly say that I don’t get hooked by his sweet personality not so much style.
Great guy and he honours the roots. So nice
Robben is not just a wonderful guitar player, but is also a wonderful musician! His willingness to listen and respect musicality is inspirational.
Wonderful! He’s my favorite electric guitarist! By far!!
You help people out to understand feeling, roots and groove. Put us free, love it!
All his videos are just so formative. Really appreciated.
Every single time I hear him play - anything really - I’m getting a lesson.
Thank you Robben.
You’re a wonderfull guitarist my man! 👍🏼🤘🏼✌🏼
That tele is absolutely gorgeous.
clarity and depth, its a beautiful thing,,,,,,
free lessons from a hero.... wish i had this resource when I was a young player....
Me too I'd have lived for this stuff totally addictive
I love it when he sings the intervals in scales.... Makes so much sense in understanding chords and how they are constructed. Plus his tone on ANY guitar is SUBLIME... though my favourite is his 50s gold top!
Love this guys vision of rythym guitar playing vs lead.
I would listen for hours and hours; beautiful lesson. Thank you very much.🙏
Just discovered this guy?! Wow! Such knowledge and ability.
thanks for your renditions of BADGE,and KEEP ON RUNNING, absolute brilliance,
I have leaned so much from these videos. Thanks Robben for your generosity and inspiration. I love your music and appreciate the care you have put on sharing your experience and knowledge.
the amount of admiration i have for him in such a short time after finding him is intense.
I'm glad you found him!!!
Me too!
Great to find these Kindred Spirits here ... just discovered Robben yesterday and MAN his approach is refreshing!

Triads is something i can sit around and learn just by experimenting for hours. Good stuff.
Inspiring lesson. That tele sounds amazing.
Nice dynamics too! beyond the choice of chords.
AWESOME!!! Thanx for the lesson, Robben!
My favorite guitar player and an excellent teacher. But know your basic stuff and you’ll always enjoy Robin✨
Great player, and a great teacher.
Thanks, I will check it out.
beautiful music ...beautiful playing ...beautiful teaching...thanks..

Chords are the toughest
I am also studying Tony Iommis finger design he made out of soap bottle plastic and leather.
My Tele improved when I swapped a rosewood fingerboard for the maple. Just feels better under my hands. Thanks Robben.
That guitar is a beauty
the man has it,thanks for sharing it

Steve W Gary Moore can do all that. And he’s prolly breaking into 20 but, def not 10

those first two chords are almost "the pusher" by Stephenwolf. Great stuff/
That riff at 1:30 - so nice!!
Nathan Richards *bro come out the closet* your family is already come to grips with the image of there son swallowing those 3 men seman.

I know the guy & he gets More Quality Pussy than most.
I too am looking for the pussy of quality! Playing the Fender telecaster will certainly bring the hot and moist pussy of highest quality to us all!
*Gotta love Robben Ford.*
how you are on the bridge pickup playing rhythm and still sound very pleasing to the ear is beyond me
ok noted you flaming butthurt keyboard warrior.
the telecaster....so good.
Funny. . .if I played it, it wouldn't sound so good.
@@jgrossma You would do better than me bro!!
Gotta love this Man
Beautiful! Thank you Robben! 😃
That tele sounds so good
You can develop the same kind of clear sound too
Nice drones. That Tele sings in your hands Mr. Ford.
Rhythm guitar is actually what it is all about, I know what Robben is saying
This is amazing
he is awesome
Touring the depths of assholomeau
Robben Ford was just on the "No Guitar is Safe" Podcast. Check it out. It's FREE on soundcloud, iTunes etc.
I love his videos u only wish they could turn up his microphone! Every video I watch of his seems like I can't fricking here him speak
Please, Fender. Make a road worn 60s Tele with rosewood fretboard available in this color. I'd buy it in a heartbeat!

Also extensively used by Pete Townshend when improvising live.
totally heard Townsend in this lesson. especially the Who Are You album.

This is not 'Robben Ford'. This is the God Apollo in human form. No human can play like him.
Matthew Oakley Orpheus.
...and he likes to spank his guitar. I feel that's necessary more than on occasion.
Matthew Oakley how bout Matt Schofield?
So there you are,,,,i finally find my menthor🤘🏻
I like the long strap button - to aid balance on a tele.

great video thank you
Hey Robin You said something truely amazing, did You ever taste the wood of the Podium ?
Hi there. I wanted to let you know that the Pebber Brown videos are fantastic. I really appreciate the recommend. I subbed you too by the way. Thanks
Awesome sounding amp whatever it is.
Great stuff!!
what a great player! every band he was in was better for it. seems like a nice guy as well. i'm going to check out the full lessons, thanks.
Pete Townshend springs to mind with some of those sounds...
Yeah I was thinking that too.
Townshend is a master at this kind of playing.
Paul Naylor Pete Townshend is, at once, one of the best rhythm players and one of the most underrated guitarists.
Yes, a little bit like "Bargain."
David Naidu Guitar One of "the best songs I've ever heard", EVER !! I remember hearing that song as a teenager and it just blew my mind.
I own gibsons and teles so I can fairly say the tele is just THE rock n roll machine ..... untouchable
Check "People Like Me" - Renegade Creation ... the approach he describes here are all over that song... and it is a great song.
if you cant get it your not ready for it i got it on the first run, im not tring to be a jerk its just how it is man, your not ready.
