  • Quick Starlink update on two items in the news. Elon Musk tweeted that global marine coverage should be coming in 2022 as more satellites are deployed with space lasers. And Starlink is now shipping their second generation dish being called 'Bricky' by fans.
    The new dish however is not the mobile dish that many RVers and Cruisers are waiting for.

    Yes, starling marine will resolve so many issues for sailing cruisers. Hopefully, it is affordable-ish.

      They won't be sending many to Fla due to needing the bandwidth for rocket launches and recovery which explains why most of them go out of the way up along the Canadian border and to some creepy youtubers for review.

    I would like to see Starling establish a wait list for the mobile system. I was on the original beta list and was offered a dishy back in April but turned it down since I need mobile.

    Traditional Maritime connectivity isn't horrible, but it is horribly expensive. I would estimate maritime service will be between $1500-$3k a month. Just a guess. However if you knew what companies pay for GEO service now you would be like WOW! That's so cheap per Mb.

    The rectangle dish will be a big deal for users in locations were icing has been a problem, we /I don’t know the most important aspect yet, but looking at the design of the new dish it my not have to move once it has been aligned! The original dish would have move to some degree to, but iced up it couldn’t and users were told remove the ice if that happen! I think they have fixed that problem with the rectangle dish (larger capture area) without having to move the dish with a tiny motor! That’s why I never recommend the system to my clients where they had icing! Will see if it moves, but as an old antenna guy, I don’t think it will have to move!

    You must also feel really stupid after talking about Starlink this much just to find out it was all a scam and they never intended to go public by pushing the date back to 2023!

      There is no Tesla phone - the information circulating around now is just a concept created by a designer for fun with no affiliation to Tesla.

    I just received an email from SpaceX:
    Silicon shortages over the last 6 months have slowed our expected production rate and impacted our ability to fulfill many Starlink orders this year. We apologize for the delay and are working hard across our engineering, supply chain, and production teams to improve and streamline our product and factory to increase our production rate.
    I checked my account today and my service date was pushed back from Late 2021 to Mid 2022!
    I've had my Starlink reservation since February 2021.

    Has there been any talk of cruise ships signing on for Starlink to lower the insanely high cost and low speeds currently provided? I assume someone could bring one on a cruise ship if they had a balcony room?

    • @MobileInternetResourceCenter
      @MobileInternetResourceCenter  2 года назад +1

      Starlink does not have coverage far from shores yet (no space lasers) - but eventually SpaceX will likely go after in flight airliners and cruise ships as target markets.

    • @lyfandeth
      @lyfandeth 2 года назад

      You can only use a radio transmitter (the uplink) on a ship with the Captain's express permission. Since a hundred dishes tacked up on balconies would be a mess, a possible hazard, and a financial loss to the cruise line? Don't bet on it.

      The advertised info on power use says , it is exactly the same. The big power brick is now integrated with the modum, and the modum is water resistant. For RV use it is great as the modum can stay outside with the dish and use exterior power plug, no intrusive holes to the inside needed.

    Badass. I do hope a starlink linkable smartphone would be next on the agenda. Hate having weak ass cell service in the city. I can only imagine outside. Also on planes would be nice too, those cruise ship data roaming prices are crazy, watching a RUclips video cost more than your ticket

      There is no magical way to shrink an antenna 2’ across that requires 60W - 100W of power into something that fits into a pocket, unfortunately.
