America when having the Philippines as a colony: "Why do I own you??"

    • @Moonlitwatersofaqua
      @Moonlitwatersofaqua 3 года назад +360

Literally though. The Democrats weren't too keen on colonialism in the first half of the 1900s and during the Wilson administration tried to kick The Philippines out in four years. Even the Philippines was like "Wait I don't wanna leave yet. >_>"
The Democrats reasons for not liking colonialism were even more ridiculous. This was back when the Democratic party was a marriage made in hell between southern segregationists and city progressives. So the reasons for disliking colonialism ranged from "colonialism is an immoral scourge on society and America would be a hypocrite to engage in it" to "Ew Asians could move here keep them away."

@@NoVisionGuy I can't tell if this is a joke. But I will elaborate on the Republican perspective as well since I didn't last time.
The Republicans were more pro imperialist but they weren't anymore unified than the Democrats. Some people viewed the annexation of the Philippines through a purely geopolitical standpoint. In that time colonialism was the international norm. Someone was going to colonize The Philippines if America left. Probably Germany or Japan. So some Americans felt that if that was going to be the case it might as well be them. It was a tough sell though. More tempting was the possible access to foreign markets.
Others though took a moralistic approach. Like President McKinley saying they were going to christianize the population. The Filipinos were catholic. Among other things too. There were many racists here too.

LOL "abandon" the Philippines because of economic reasons? FYI the Philippines was one of the wealthiest countries in Asia when the US left. The only reason the US allowed the Philippines independence was because there were too many natives to assimilate into the US. If the Philippines somehow gained statehood instead of independence back in the day, it would have easily been like Hawaii is today in terms of development, but with a population at least double, even triple that of California, in fact this hypothetical "Philippine Region" of the US would probably itself broken up into three states (Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao), which is a big power block (6 senators) that is made up mostly of non-whites, so can you see why the US had to let the Philippines go instead of trying to absorb it like they did Hawaii?

No I'm pretty sure the US left the Philippines because its land thousands of miles away from the mainland, and before modern shipping (such as in 1946) there really isn't that much economic reason to have a territory so far that doesn't get outweighed by all the downsides of encompassing the entire Pacific. There wasn't all that much strategic reason to keep it either, we had just been dragged into ww2 because of it and the Philippines are awfully close to a lot of countries that were shaping up to really dislike America, so having multiple states right beside them doesn't seem great when they could be independent but a really good friend (military bases).

The US never really wanted the phillipines. they promised independece give or take two years after buying it from Spain and made a plan to gradually pull out of the Phillipines. 1934-5 the Phillipines and US set up a governement that gave the Phillipines self governance, although it wasn't absolute, and around the time they were getting ready to pull out Japan invaded.
Also i dought it would have been as develop has you say since US didn't really want the Islands, it was too far away from mainland US, unlike Hawaii the Phillipines were very close to global powers at the time, i'm confident the Filipinos wouldn't cooperate, etc.

Military hegemony, opening of markets to American goods and leverage through international actors ie IMF, WTO and the UN.

I see your points about "colonies" and "empire" in the common definition of the words.
You are of course correct in the traditional sense.
The point of my comment is to highlight that the US (and USSR) were every part as much "colonial empires" as Britain, France or Spain in their glory days.
The approach and tools to reach hegemonic political and economic influence over large groups of countries merely support my claim. With technology and economic development, it was no longer economically or strategically viable to take direct control over a country and its resources. Instead a "world order" for regulating, policing and rewarding behaviour that benefited the US was the main tool in US economic colonialism. A system that that also to a very large extent benefited growth and development in many of the US "colonies"...

Cuba becoming a state in almost any alternate timeline as they (the Cubans) actually had a vote and turned it down right after the Spanish-American war. The list of more minor things just off that would probably be long. Can you imagine who Fidel Castro would have been had he ben born in Cuba with it being an American territory/state?
If by some chance we had kept the Philippines (which would be an interesting alternate history by itself) that would have made the US consideration for the South China sea now very different (like the Chinese being less likely to try and swipe the Spratly Islands).

How would an independent Burgundy, with control over the duchies of Burgundy and the Low Countries, fare navigating the political and cultural conflicts of the 15th to 20th Centuries? How would the weakening of France and the HRE as a result of the independence of Burgundy affect and shift future events?

If he actually was historically accurate or knowledgeable... What an ignorant of basic history. No one wanted N. Mexico as it is a DESERT! The border was purposefully drawn THROUGH the desert but South of San Diego(harbor). If GO south of Monterray Mexico then you get into non desert which means Mexico would easily be able to fortify/attack northwards and the USA would have to try logistics in a freaking unpopulated desert before the automobile... Yea as if that was going to happen... Spanish American war, as the invasion of Cuba/Phillipines happened, accords were drawn up WITH native population to GIVE BOTH territories TO the natives in 1898. Worked in Cuba's case, but in Phillipines case, a very basic communication translation error led to the biggest idiotic war(massacre really) and the giving of the Phillipines back to the natives was put back to 1946 instead of 1903 due to said idiotic war as was done in Cuba's case. Then WWII happened and governing Filipino's were massacred and once again it was put back till 1973 or was it 1967? I forget. In either case, the USA had NO wish to keep those territories. None other than a coaling station as done at Cuba Guantonimo bay. Puerto Rico was different, sugar lobby, but it shouldn't have been as a couple decades later sugar beets became sugar source. Nicaragua as a canal was never going to happen with their technology and large native population. Panama was chosen for the canal SPECIFICALLY because there were NO NATIVES living there. NONE. And because the French had already started it. The Yucatan had same problem Panama Canal(Disease) and would never have happened until drugs were developed. No one could live there with the current climate. People did thousands of years ago because of climate change.
