I typed out their method for people who need it for school: 1. Mix the water, salt and dish soap together in a bowl. 2. Place the rubbing alcohol into the freezer to chill. 3. Put 3 strawberries with the stems removed into a Ziplock bag, measure out 3 tablespoons of the previously made solution and pour that into the bag also. 4. Seal the Ziplock bag closed, remembering to remove the air and crush the strawberries until they are a fine, foamy paste. 5. Strain the strawberry pulp into the beaker, using a spoon to push it through. 6.Remove the rubbing alcohol from the freezer and measure out half a cup of it. 7. Gently pour your alcohol into the strawberry mixture, making sure that they don’t mix and that it just makes a fine layer on top of the pulp. This will help the DNA separate from the rest of the strawberry mixture. 8. Use your tweezers to remove the strands of DNA from your beaker.
I have 4 questions for school: 1. What do you think DNA looks like under a microscope? 2. Are strawberries the only fruit with DNA? 3. What does DNA look like in the experiment? 4. Where was the DNA in the strawberry?
I really appreciate this! So simple and neat! Also I really liked the animated explanation as well, helped a lot for visualizing the process, thanks! Subscribed!

Hi Science Guys. Something to ask on. Is the extraction of this experiment can be further use in genome sequence reading? Is the DNA clean from impurity?
Bubblegumpop396 If you haven't seen out liquid density tower experiment yet then you should!! You would probably like it, we layer 12 different liquids on top of each other.
The alcohol needs to be cold because it helps increase the yield of DNA. Cells contain enzymes in the cytoplasm that help destroy viruses but protect the DNA. Hot water has the potential to damage DNA by accelerating enzymes that break it apart. DNA is typically protected from such enzymes by the nuclear membrane, but the soap added previously destroys it. Cold alcohol helps the DNA precipitate faster.
Hello, I'm teaching overseas. So i have to rely on locals to buy my supplies. They got ethyl alcohol instead of isopropyl alcohol? Will this still work or should I send them back out for iso? Thanks
I have 4 questions for school: 1. What do you think DNA looks like under a microscope? 2. Are strawberries the only fruit with DNA? 3. What does DNA look like in the experiment? 4. Where was the DNA in the strawberry?
You can use a high proof alcohol (ethanol) and fresh pineapple juice to do this as well. Skip the salt and soap, and instead freeze the strawberries and then let them thaw. Ice crystals will break up the cell membranes (much like the soap). Put about a cup of fresh pineapple juice (not pasteurized) in a baggie with about three strawberries, and squish. Strain the strawberries, and then pour the adult beverage the same way that the rubbing alcohol was done here. The DNA will separate, AND the entire concoction is now made of 100% human consumable ingredients. The Pineapple juice replaces the salt, and the freezing of the strawberries eliminates the need for soap.
I had a problem with making the layer of alcohol. It made it, but it formed beneath the strawberry mixture. Do you guys know why? (I did pour it gently)
Silly question- but would this method work with other materials? Food wise, but also granulated substances such as sand, dust, crushed rock etc. I have to perform this experiment to prove that the provided samples that are not necessarily 'alive, may contain living organisms...not sure if this will work.

What would happen if you ate the DNA, meaning just pure DNA assuming that there were no impurities and alcohol with it? Would your insides burn because it's acid, what is the pH level of DNA? If this were done with radioactive spider venom (assuming it had a extraordinary low venom toxicity that wasn't threatening towards humans) and you ate it or "accidentally" injected yourself with it; would the radioactivity cause the DNA from the spider to merge with the DNA of your existing cells to cause the to divide into mutated spider-human hybrid cells? If so then Spider-man? If so then could you achieve world domination with these mutant spider abilities?
+The Palmo Your cells are full of DNA and last time I checked I was still in one piece. Your cells probably wouldn't accept the DNA. So it would probably dissolve.
+The Palmo the pH level of DNA is as low as citric acid and safe to consume. we ate that strawberry DNA as we eat the strawberry itself. The DNA will be digested and broke by DNase in our body. the digested DNA part will be used to replace your body's DNA or to make new cell. DNA injection will likely to cause some allergic effect because its an alien material for our body (i haven't searched about injecting DNA)
what would I weight it with or is their an alternative because I have to compare the amount of DNA between an over ripe strawberry and a ripe strawberry any ideas?

XboxMLGProGamer do so
I once tried this on myself by using my saliva instead of the mashed strawberries, and it actually worked!
How much saliva did you use? Probably up to a cup to make your DNA really visible, haha. I only get a dot of DNA from about 2mL of saliva

Thanks for the reasoning part too. Nice lab presentation.

Hey Guys! Great video but is only DNA extracted or is other cellular material also collected here like proteins?
why put the alcohol in the fridge?
The alcohol needs to be cold because it helps increase the yield of DNA. Cells contain enzymes in the cytoplasm that help destroy viruses but protect the DNA. Hot water has the potential to damage DNA by accelerating enzymes that break it apart. DNA is typically protected from such enzymes by the nuclear membrane, but the soap added previously destroys it. Cold alcohol helps the DNA precipitate faster.
How would I know if this is really the DNA? Because I don't have any tools to see if it is a real DNA. Thank you!
How long does it take for the dna to show ?
My class did the experiment without salt, but it still turned out good. My science teach said that my group extracted the most DNA than most he saw.
+Jaden Cavan That is awesome!! Congrats.
What we can do with this dna??? Can we use in any metal...any synthesis of metals using this??
Do we need a funnel?

it just has to be cold.

can you eat it?

It said in the beginning no
That was absolutely not three tablespoons of the salt-soap solution
why does the alcohol need to go into the freezer?
Aurora Lara the DNA itself, while already insoluble in isopropyl, is highly insoluble in chilled isopropyl, thus typically yielding better results
