- Testing a variety of .177 slugs advertised as being suitable for sub 12 ft lb rifles, but are they any good?
On test:
JSB Knockout @ 10.03 GR
ZAN Slug @ 10 GR
ZAN Slug @ 13 GR
Wildman Slug @ 11.8 GR
QYS Magnum @ 13.2 GR (yes, this is a pellet, I know)
*additional note following some feedback... the testing was done using an "off the shelf" rifle with no power tweaks or modifications whatsoever.

I use Mako slugs in my Weirauch 97K and they are great; often hitting the first shot, time and again at 20 yds. On the Precision-ballistics website they recommend single manual loading as the slugs can be inserted slightly crooked from magazines designed for pellets creating an uneven spiralling effect on leaving the barrel and subsequently, inaccurate hits.. I haven't even tried them in my magazined Air Arms S510 TDR for that reason. But my hefty springer seems to like them.

Good data, thanks for posting this. I tried some of the Zan 10s in my sub-12 .177 HW100 (which shoots pretty much any diablo pellet well, really unfussy barrel) and they were terrible. Like a shot-gun spread at 30m.
ok several things to note here: slugs DO work out of sub 12 airguns ( those slugs were designed for sub 12 rifles ) however, you have to tune the rifle to them. The increased drag down the barrel with slugs means the fps can drop considerably thus affecting stability / accuracy, I'll bet when chrono'd that the slugs ft/lb was way down on power, I found that most slugs tend to like being around the 11.7 ft/lb mark out the barrel - so adjusting the hammer / reg pressure to get them up to speed is essential.
Granted not all barrels like slugs - but shoving a few thru at 20 yards ( did you clean the barrel / lead in a few shots between brands ? ) then claiming a fail isn't a particularly complete test imo.
I use the Zan 10gr out of my Brocock and will pull a group comparable to your QYS group at 55 yards, and better than the JSB group at 75 yards if I do my part :)
Thanks for adding extra reasoning behind the results of this testing. The main point of this video was to show how slugs perform in an "off the shelf" rifle. As you may know, in the UK, we can't simply adjust the power of our PCPs, with the regulators being inside the rifle and anti tamper covering hammer spring adjusters, etc. I know you can, and indeed have adjusted power levels using these techniques on another rifle, but for most PCP owners in the UK, I think they just want to know what works with their standard rifle, as they don't want to start taking it to bits 👍😊
@@k.s.airguns-airgunpestcont4680 fair point, I know alot of PCP users are not comfortable adjusting such things, which is a shame imo - people absolutely should learn to maintain / tune their rifles ( within the 12ft/lb legal limit of course ) to get the best out of them. Alot of airguns on the market these days are very poor fit and finish on the internals that the variation on accuracy and power ( and reliability ) even between batches of the same model is shocking and can make the difference between what ammo it prefers or if it even fires it at all 😂 ( my mates brand new FX MK3 wildcat just blew a reg seal after just 2 magazines 😱 the seal pin was all chewed up by some ham fisted tech 😩 ) imo learning such basic maintenance and adjustment should be part of PCP ownership :)
@@Froggywentawandering Problem in the UK is the overly anal way the regs are looked at.
Go 0.5 lb over and you're up infront of the beak for a firearms charge.
Most shops I know set them up slightly under even when setting them up to the limit because they have to cover their backside just incase the chrono is slightly out or whatever.
Also if you set them up for a slug with more barrel drag you have to be careful what ammo you're even carrying around because technically if you've got pellets that will allow more than the limit you're carrying a firearm too - even if its loaded with the slugs at the time.
You would think there would be some common sense applied but sadly that doesn't appear to be the case with UK law.
@@siraff4461 you're right there bud, I chrono my gun weekly to make sure it's legal with the slugs, as they are 10gr and bisley magnums are 10.5gr the difference is only very slight in fps, however if I use 13gr and tune to them then the bisleys take the gun to 12.6ft lb, which is obviously over the limit..
But as always - most laws in this country are rediculous knee reactionary ones 😩
@@Froggywentawandering Madness, isn't it? Especially when you can walk into any supermarket and just buy a massive knife which will do a fair bit more damage.
A good friend of mine ended up going to court over a similar thing though. At a local range and for some reason the local constabulary decided they wanted to pop by and do a random check on pressures. He was 0.2lb over according to their equipment and rather than simply say to him "thats slightly over mate - you can't use it until you sort it" or similar, they confiscated it, dragged him to the station for an inteview and gave him a court summons.
Luckily he had receipts to prove he had it set up by a shop - who also sealed it with an anti- tamper sticker - and even took the shop owner in to provide evidence. The shop owner showed the (video'd) chrono runs with the gun and the results which were just slightly shy of the limit. The only explaination he could give was that it had been rebuilt with a fair few new internals and it may have loosened up a little since.
Luckily the judge threw it out but listening to the way the copper was talking about how it was this dangerous and that intentional and so on you would think he was trying to get him done for some kind of terrible crime or something.
I just run my sub 12's at around 11.5 now and don't worry about it. Its less accurate and slightly less fun but I don't want to be in that position over such a daft amount over.
Great vid! The point to come out of this is the rifle. There might be a slug out there it could perform with but not those. I am using a 17.5 grn from a UK maker, and three rifles shoot them A1 including a FAC at 30ft lbs.
I can't tune my little PCP to the pellet or slug. If doesn't work - I'll find another pellet.
QYS pellets are not available in my country.
Tested loads of slugs in .177 sub12 and not that good low in power by a fair bit . You can’t beat a good old pellet in sub 12 , some thing like JSB 10.3 , qys , JSB express

Not yet dude, but I'll do it when I compare the Magnums against the Streamlined Heavies, I'll put it in that video.

I find that the pellet sizes arent as varied with alugs. My brocock sniper likes QYS streamline heavies at 4.49. The same pellet in 4.50 is nowhere near as accurate. Cant find slugs in 4.49 anywhere.
Different barrels like different pellets and slugs mate,I hunt with Zan 10 GN slugs in my hw100 and there is nothing better and believe me I've tried them all.
In your HW100, have you tried H&N FTT? I have 3 HW100's and the H&N outperform every other pellet i've tried which over 20 years would be about 30 different types.
Mako 10gr slugs work as good as QYS 9.56streamline in my BSA Ultra SE, it is Ratworks tuned though

My HW100 is a RATWorks tuned gun. Still terrible with slugs though. It'll put Bisley Mags through the same hole at 60m all day long but a ten grain Zan slug probably won't hit the target at all.
Yeh my ratworks tuned bsa meteor is shit with slugs, but will shoot pellet on pellet at 106 yards using wasp pellets
apparantley 177 slugs either hn or jsb shoot slug on slug with a cz barrel or a bsa barrel and not lothar walther barrels as the cz or thebsa are tapered chocks i use jsb slugs 10.03 at 720 feet per second and it is slug on slug at 60 yards and also they carry much more energey dowm range, at 60 yards still retaining 8 ft lb energey and a velocity 610 fet per second as apoossed to jsb heavies 10.34 same range only 5 ft lbs and a slower velocity
Non choked barrels are supposed to shoot slugs better than choked.
My agt have CZ choked barrels and do not shoot the H&N slugs well at all they are terrible.
I think barrels and pellets are made for each other you have to have a barrel that light slugs my gun loves slugs had to get a slug barrel for it would I go back to pellets for hunting not a chance 177 with 10 g slugs spot on
the brocock has a choked barrel and slugs dont perform well in them

I have found that slugs dont work satisfactorily in sub 12's!!!!!! They are intended to be used in FAC types where POWER is king. Stop trying 'to get a silk purse out of a sows ear' !!!
Get yourselves a rifle that develops over 20ftlb (FAC), better still, one that's tuned to develop 50-60 ftlb........THAT, will not disappoint when using ZAN 33grn slugs at 850-900fps, CAUTION be very wary of the significant carry over of these slugs, check backdrops !!!!!!
