    Got my new 20-inch to the range today. This is a very exciting product. A company is finally exploiting these new alloys. We should not be disappointed with a few little glitches. It's encouraging to have a solid base rifle that we can work. I put a green sprinCo buffer spring in and an h3 buffer in ran it suppressed on setting two. Functioned perfectly. But with the adjustable gas I think that could be fine-tuned. I think they missed the bet by not extending the buffer tube by 3/4 inch and using the vltor buffers. That would allow you to tune this rifle perfectly to match your preferred ammo.

Setting 2 not so much - not always cycling. I just bought a Midway H2 4.6 ounce buffer to tame the recoil form the over gassed setting 3. If this works and slows down the BCG and reduces the recoil - I'll just let it run on setting 3. Oh - 1 MOA with Sig Elite 150 grain.

    I've had this intense interest in the SFAR since launch as a lightweight 'scout' rifle that can flex into duty / patrol rifle roles and keep up with more conventional carbines due to the smaller form factor. I appreciate videos like this one because it's giving me some good insight into what I'll likely need to do in order to achieve what I want out of the platform, though in fairness I do plan on going a lot further than many/most. Rebarreling with HM Defense' monobloc barrel with a medium-light contour and .081" gas port, sending off a spare BCG to get a polish and DLC coating, Tubbs flat spring + whatever buffer ends up working best, and tuning the thing around use of a Flow 762 ti. Theoretically the low backpressure from flow-through style cans should eliminate the typical need for adjustable gas blocks on AR's with suppressors. All in all this should make for a pretty reliable harder-use rifle than what Ruger ships.

      Yes! I tried that in a video prior to this coming out and was one of the first to try it. It kind of worked…. On most 308, setting 2 ran great but I still had to switch it to setting 3 for 7.62 NATO. In the end I got kind of sick of having to try and predict which setting an ammo would need. Hence I went to one that had more settings so I could find one that ran all the ammo, this is doing it. Thanks for the tip though!

  • @ShastaBean

    It'd be interesting to know if Ruger has only sampled a limited types of various rounds or like you mentioned only built it around running a particular flavor per setting.
    Can't help but wonder if the people saying theirs is fine, is only because they haven't cycled through the number of rounds you have. Or if it's a matter of some variance in Ruger's QC? And a certain percentage of what they ship out are going to have issues?
    You now need to go out and buy 4 more of these rifles and duplicate all of the steps to see!!
    Ruger probably watching what is going on here and you are doing their testing for them.
    But also as you mentioned, like we see with other cartridges (5.7 & 10mm) there's quite a difference in not only power, but also the different types of tips.
    I'm still interested to see my results when I get back to trying to cycle lots of the 125 gr Nosler BTs. With my luck, it will cycle and then shoot 18" groups. Or it will shoot .0005" groups, and not feed. haha

      As always, great insights. I’m guessing it’s the combo of issues we are seeing: people only trying a couple of different types of ammo, QC from Ruger, and probably some design issues (single screw for the gas key) as well. And I the various tip types is another variable. I know when people send their rifle back, Ruger only tests it with one type of ammo. Yah, I think my rifle is the only one I’ll have. 🤣😂. • @triggerbarPhD
      @triggerbarPhD  8 месяцев назад +4

      I tried that in a previous video. It did improve things for me, but I found that I had to run 308 ammo on setting 2, but 7.62 Nato ammo on setting 3. Then if I had a can on, I had to run it on setting 2 for 7.62 Nato and setting 1 for 308. Some people that's fine and they only shoot 308 so for them, that shows its working right. In the end I wanted and felt like I needed more adjustability. I feel I have that now with this system. I have one setting for unsuppressed and one setting for suppressed, instead of variable per the ammo I'm shooting. Thanks for asking though!!

    SFAR was not designed to have one gas setting for a range of ammunition! That is why it has settings. You select the setting that works best for your ammunition. Read the owners manual. My SFAR has never malfunction AFTER selecting the correct setting. Wonderful rifle with great accuracy and little recoil.

    • @triggerbarPhD
      @triggerbarPhD  5 месяцев назад +3

      Glad yours has worked. I believe I said that and of course I read the owners manual, multiple times. In the end I wanted something that could work with multiple ammo choices and not gas me out of the range. With this change the gun works so much better and works with all ammo on one setting and all ammo with the suppressor on another setting. Sure, it’s not what ruger designed, I just don’t care for what they designed and this works much better. Aside from my gas key coming loose and having to go back to ruger, mine would have worked like yours. Now mine works with two settings for all ammo and my suppressor with less gas and recoil. Your mileage may vary.

      Thank-you that’s very kind of you. Ruger paid for all the shipping back and forth and they were extremely professional. In the end, with their help, I was able to get the gun to be reliable with 308 on setting 2. But it continued to bug me that it would run 7.62 nato on setting 2 and had to be run on setting 3. I think that is their design intent. The gun is very gassy on setting 3 and has what I’d call excessive recoil. Also the manual warns about running on setting 3. So with that I took the leap based on others feedback to put my own adjustable gas block on. I’m so glad I did. I really love how the gun runs. If your gun runs you’ll be very happy. You may have no desire to run 7.62 nato anyways so hopefully your gun will just be perfect! If not, I hope some of this helps! Take care!

      Most online stores will sell it, brownells, midway usa, or direct from aero precision. Make sure you get a mid-length gas tube as well. Right now they are under $70 at midway usa. Get the .75" diameter one. Lots of videos on how to install a gas block online just make sure you get aligned correctly, some good videos out there on that too. Hardest part for me was getting the old one off! hahaha.

      No I ran it stock when I first got it back. No spring or buffer changes. It worked better but I couldn’t get it to run on 7.62 NATO unless it was on setting 3. So in theory it was working. Ruger never claimed it would run on one setting with all ammo. I just wanted it to do that! Hence this change. But seems like if there is a spot with a different gas block that runs all ammo, shouldn’t they have found that with their new one? I could tune my gas down even more to run the 308 on less. But this is much less over gassed than setting 3. At any rate, short answer new gas regulator helps, but would like better. Hence this change. Thanks for watching all of these!!!

      But when it came back it had the BCG swapped right? How many rounds did you give it before deciding to change? There is definitely some variation, my gun runs everyone on 2 now with the update. The stock ones either wide open or not enough, or not enough and nothing depending on the ammo. Happy that you went the aftermarket adjustable gas block route. I wont be able to shoot low powered stuff until i switch the Gas block, but im fine with that. Ill just shoot my other 308's that are tuned for the low power stuff. I took this knowledge and applied it to the SFAR. Spring appears rifle length, I turned the gas to 2 and swapped out a carbine spring. It worked! I hate to say it but issues like this with the SFAR were always a possibility in a gen 1 rifle. Ya know I almost bought an MDRX but I’m glad I didn’t in 2022 since I’ve heard of multiple updates they’ve had to make this year to the X model and not just the original MDR. So what did I do? I bought a couple AR10’s, built out some Aero Precision M5/M5E1’s and a PSA AR10 Gen 2, they’re all flawless and cost me a little over a grand each. The SFAR was about the same cost and I told myself if it doesn’t work out I could just sell it or even just leave it in a corner to favor a true AR10 with no issues. I’ve only had minor problems with my SFAR, but I’m just not sure if I’d take say it to battle over all else yet. The hunting woods or range sure it’s a nice bring along, it’s not life and death for me there so a good place to break er in. But like most I don’t got 2-500 or even 1k .308 rounds to just shoot through each rifle to get em broken in, I can spare a few boxes sure, but then I got to chill.
    I’ve added a Kyneshot hyrdraulic buffer weight, a Geiselle braided spring, and Geiselle SSA-E trigger, a law tactical folder, a Griffin Armament SNACH charging handle, and I run a Thunder Chicken can on the end pretty much as a dedicated setup. It works, but my charging handle will tend to bump back some, which I’m not a fan of. Other than that it seems to run okay.
    At least it only cost a grand or so to start with the SFAR, and Ruger stands by their products. However this will definitely be a better Gen 2 rifle that’s for sure.

    Thanks for another helpful video. My FSAR has had multiple issues with two trips back to Ruger. Now I'm trying to get the gas system working correctly. Ive considered changing the gas regulator/ block but would really like to get the original working. I tried the new revision regulator but its no better than the first one (setting 3 is too much gas, 2 is too little). What i ended up doing was gradually opening up port #2. The "sweet spot" seems to be 0.0728" for my 168gr, 2550fps loads. However, what has me stumped now is it has a 3o'clock ejection pattern for the first 20 or so rounds and then the pressure drops off and by the time 60 rounds are fired the ejection is at 5:00 and bolt wont lock back and failure to feed occur. SO I Wonder if you will have the same problem with your adjustable block after digesting multiple rounds? Ruger has to do better!

    • @triggerbarPhD
      @triggerbarPhD  Год назад +1

      I haven’t see than on mine. But…I feel like I had that a lot prior to changing the gas block. I need to do a bit more testing with the new gas block. I probably have 100 rounds with it and haven’t seen it do that…yet. I’d want to get more rounds before I can definitively tell you that. I assume you have checked to make sure the current gas block isn’t hitting the hand rail and is seated right on the gas port (no weird gas escaping and discoloration and the screws are tight.

    • @danhadley3432

      @@triggerbarPhD Yes gas port alignment is good. I can see it on the gas regulator during cleaning. The gas port/ hole isn’t getting fouled or partially blocked either. The gas block itself is tight and torqued. BTW Forward Controls makes a nice sling adapter that replaces that plastic piece and allows staking. The bolt isn’t getting carboned up or frozen. This is very troubling that my gun loses reliability after approximately 30 rounds. I’ll keep working on it. I may have to give in and change to an adjustable GB

    • @danhadley3432
      @danhadley3432 Год назад +1

      @Trigger-Bar Just a quick update. I ended up installing a Superlative Arms adjustable Gas block. and went with a H2 buffer and a Red Sprinco buffer spring. When I left the range the GB setting was backed most of the way out, allowing for max gas pressure release,/ bypass. Brass ejection was roughly 2:30. I order a H3 buffer and will try that next range trip to see if I can get to 3:00. With this GB I didnt see the degrading pressure problem that I was experiencing with the Ruger "gas regulator". Reliability is still questionable as I always get a FTF at some point during a firing session. Trying hard and spending too much to get this rifle to function as it should.

    • @triggerbarPhD
      @triggerbarPhD  Год назад

      @@danhadley3432 hmm. Do you get lock back with shooting just one round? Ugh this is so frustrating. I am a little worried that you can only get it to run on the most open setting. That means you may still need more gas. Did you try it will the normal buffer weight? I can’t tell if it needs more gas or less but if you said you have to have it all the way open that tells me more so I’d recommend trying your original buffer weight at this point. This rifle is so annoying because it has so much potential but is so frustrating. Did you ever send yours back to ruger?

    • @danhadley3432
      @danhadley3432 Год назад +1

      @@triggerbarPhD My issue with Ruger's gas regulator was setting 2 was under gassed, setting 3 was way over. The Superlative Arms Gas Block is unique in that it has 2 "modes" one is restrictive like a normal GB and the other is that it vents excess gas out the front of the block. I have mine set so it is venting as much as it can out the front and thus limiting how much is heading to the BCG. So even then I was getting over gassed, ejection near 1:00. So I went with a heavier buffer and stiffer spring. When I did that the ejection pattern got better but still in the 2:00 range. Im hoping the H3 will add a little more mass and get me closer to 3:00. For some reason my gun is really over gassed. And yes my gun has been back to Ruger twice because it wouldnt eject brass, first a new BCG which didnt change anything, then they changed the barrel, which helped the stuck case problem but the over gas condition was still a problem. Your video convinced me to give up on the gas regulator. Several types of ammo were tried with the same results BTW.

    Does the Aero gas block clear the standard handguard well or would you change the handguard too?

    • @triggerbarPhD
      @triggerbarPhD  7 месяцев назад +1

      That’s the main problem with swapping this out is losing the great design from ruger to have it accessible from the side of the handguard. Initially I just used the ruger hand guard kept a longer gas key like a 6” one with me in my bag for adjustments. But I saw another RUclips video where they put on the 12.625” Midwest industries handguard on. I did that later after I was convinced this was going to work. I now have that on mine. I still need to go in from the top but because it’s much closer to the end I can keep a short key in the grip where ruger had theirs. Other have gone to the rifle speed gas block for this reason, you can get a long one and people have had great success with that. I haven’t tried that but thought you should be aware of that option.

      @@triggerbarPhDThanks for your response. I've seen Hops video and he also installed the Midwest rail with the riflespeed gas block but mentioned, that this doesn't really solve the problem since that combination only leaves very small space between de GB and the handguard. Thank-you! Honestly, all the ar-10 (lr-308 and dpms) all seem to have some similar issues though the SFAR seems to have some “birthing” pains. Equal to the SFAR? The POF is basically the same rifle. But you’ll pay almost 3x the price. But it runs. I had much fewer issues with my aero M5 but it is waaaay heavier.
      Honestly, knowing what I know now, I’d go with the Sig 716i. Wait for a sale on it and I’ve seen it this year for around $1350. Just be ready for no matter what you go with, it likely won’t be as reliable as any ar-15 you pickup. But you could also get lucky if you go this route! 🤣🤷‍♂️. Some people say theirs run fine. Once running right this SFAR is a real joy to own and shoot but could take a lot of back and forth with ruger and personal mods to make it work.

    You should not have to do all that to get the Ruger SFAR, It should take 7.62 x 51/308 without any alterations. I look at Ruger brand as top notch. They should make it right. I ordered 1 before watching your videos. I do not plan on spending hundreds of dollars to figure out that they need to fix issues with a quality gun. • @triggerbarPhD

      What I found with mine was that with the old regulator I had problems almost on all settings with various ammo. With the new regulator I was able to run 308 on setting 2 and 7.62 nato on setting 3. I then replaced the ruger gas block with an aero precision adjustable gas block and I was able to find a single setting that has run every ammo I have (various 308 and 7.62 Nato). Hope that helps!

    Does the aero gas block void warranty. Say if I had to send it in if I’m still having issues. Also I was wondering if you could show your feed ramps because mine is jamming on feeding a new round I noticed my feed ramps are not cut into the lower receiver like on my ar15 it is Also gougeing the brass on the neck like the ramps are dong it I was going to polish also didn’t know if that would void warranty any help is appreciated thanks

    • @triggerbarPhD
      @triggerbarPhD  Год назад

      I would imagine it does void the warranty. However....I would just put the original one back on...But I've sent mine back and while they replaced my bcg which needed repair, the rifle still had problems. So void the warranty or have a rifle that works on select samples of ammo. I haven't seen any issues with my feed ramp. I had problems with feeding but it was all gas related. Once I tuned it with different buffer weights OR changed the gas block out, it worked (and tighted down the gas key...sigh). But before doing any of those things check your bcg, make sure the gas key is right, then check your gas block and make sure the screws are tight. The gauging on the brass is again gas issues. If you fix your gas that all goes away, trust me I've seen all of those issues...

Really disappointed in Ruger for making their customers find solutions to their problems

    • @triggerbarPhD
      @triggerbarPhD  10 месяцев назад

      I’m sorry. Most of my editing is done because I try to remove a lot my “um’s” or awkward long pauses. Also I’ve had to at times edit out showing things because RUclips won’t allow me to show it. At this point, I have about 8 videos before this one, and two after this one, the rifle is finally running correctly. That was after a trip back to ruger, which they paid for, where they replaced the bcg and gave me yet another regulator. Then as shown in this video I replaced the gas block with one from aero precision. I own this rifle and paid for it out of my own money and I don’t get squat from anyone. I wanted this rifle to run and so I worked hard to try to get it there and hopefully show people my process and journey incase it might help. For me, getting a repaired bcg from them, and then putting a gas block with more adjustable settings made this rifle reliable. Others have reported they still had problems. 🤷‍♂️. Others had no problems from the start. Hard to say what a new purchase would give. Hope this helps and sorry for the low quality and editing, I’m not trying to hide anything except what YT won’t let me post.

      @CrunchDramaNetwork is still say it’s a crap shoot as to where or not you get a reliable one out of the box. I’d say by and large replacing the gas block ends up fixing them if you don’t get a good one. Others just run a couple of types of 308 and it runs fine. But I’ve seen some (rare) people still can’t get it run reliably and need to send it back to ruger (again- try that first if you have problems). From comments on my videos and other RUclipsrs (larger and small) is where I’ve got most of this info, so take it at that value. I can really only speak to mine. There are some early videos out that claim some mythical break in period. That’s been debunked but unfortunately often repeated. The manual and talking to ruger says it’s only 100-200 rounds. If it’s not reliable after that give ruger a call. It is a great gun when it runs. I have several follow on videos showing how I great I think it is. It’s incredible how light it is…
