Martineztown was founded in 1860 because a man wanted his children to learn to read and be able to read the Bible. But the Catholic Church would have none of that because they were not high born. So he took his family and a few like minded friends and moved west to the foot of the sand hills, which at the time was outside of town. He convinced a Protestant Church in Taos to build a Church who didn’t have a problem with teaching the kids to read. The town got so popular the Catholic Church built Santa Barbara right next door. For a long time the south side of High street was Protestant and the North side of High Street was Catholic.
