Goes to show you don't need super expensive materials to make glamorous artwork :)
Pick up a pen, some paper, and even if you draw something you don't like, you're not losing but learning!
Yea i mean Look at kim jung gi haha
The goat
save your expensive materials for finished pieces you want to archive/portfolio. use the cheap stuff for everything else. best of both worlds 👍🏼☺️
Amen! 💖
you can even use notebook paper, although transferring back to white and or digital is a pain :D
its important to keep in mind that some cheap materials stay around for ages, while some dont preserve too well :)
@@skoruno1 i agre!
“ I’m not an artist “
*SAYS THAT WHILE SHOWING MASTERPIECES SHE MADE*
it was only a “sketch” and in her words she didn’t really like the way it turned out, but yes it does look nice
@@frogger551 she is defenetly an artist.
@@sopadetuco1366 very talented one at that
Lmao, yes she is great
Everyone has a different definition of the word "artist" :]
Stay light and feathery and you can shade almost like it was a pencil.
I've seen other artists get some crazy results with it! Though I think I prefer the look where you can distinguish some of the pen lines :)
yah, thats why bics can be great for drawing/shading techniques you would usually use with a pencil. gel pens lay in a bit different, its a lot harder to do the feathering/ghosting though possible.
Zebra ballpoints are good too. They have a dryer ink flow and you can get really light lines. And cheap no name ballpoints are always somehow nice for drawing.
Yeah, weirdly it seems like the crappier the pen the better it is for drawing!😂some of my favorite drawing pens are so scratchy, and they’re terrible for writing
Sylvia Spaugh markers are the same if u get into using them for ghosting in shapes before you put any lines down 👍🏼
I get so much anxiety drawing with a pen but I also like the way the outcome looks.. its always so much more bold and has stronk lines :D
mm yes so stronk hehe
that is so strange because i am the exact opposite. i felt a lot more free when i switched to using pen more.
same!
Bic makes colored pens that I use often. They layer nicely and get the softer marks like a normal black one does!
After making this video I realized Bic comes in cute colours too! D: At my Staples they only had the standard colours, so now I'm gonna go on a search for them! *_*
Yes! I love them, I think they are the “crystal” ones!
@@ChrisHongArt The purple bic comfort grip pens are my favorite!😍👏🏻💜 I love them and the black bic’s! I use my red and blue col-erase pencils with these as well for some warmth and coolness/shadows.👌🏻✨
@@VioletGlitterworks Yes, the purple ones are lovely. Learned that from Drawing Wiff Waffles. :)
Idk if this helps but I find stuff like white out, post it notes, and white gel pens to be really good additions to pen studies or figure sketches. For a while my past figure drawing classes had a strict “no pencil” rule for café drawings (before anyone asked it was meant to force students to be more quick and precise in sketching) and these were a life saver. Obviously, white out will change the texture of the paper and will make it the pen lay down differently. So my advice is to use it sparingly and test and see it your pens will play nice with it.
Amazing video as always!
good input
Definitely agree! Have started alternating between using my white Sakura Gelly Roll pen and my Uni-Ball Signo white gel pen, and they've been super helpful to take care of some mistakes and apply some highlights (especially the latter since the Uni-Ball Signo is more opaque)! ^^
It looks so easy when you do it
even though I sound scared half the video? 😂
@@ChrisHongArt haha you did great and i can't wait to be that talented, it seems to flow out of you to be honest
@@ChrisHongArt something about it is very reassuring to a stumped artist like myself, I drew for the first time in 5 months today, thank you’ You’re so much fun to draw along with!
I think the Zebra Sarasa is actually a gel pen. The ink isn't going to come out as subtly as a ball-point pen.
It's a gel pen you're right. My mother has the same brand of pen and it is gel. To know whether the pen is gel or ballpoint you can look at the ink cartridge. Gel pen usually have a thick ink cartridge while ballpoint pens have a thin one. Plus there is absolutely no kind of gradiation in gel pens that you get with ballpoint pens. Although gel pens are more opaque and can fill in solid blocks of color
The thing that I love most about drawing with pen is that you can't fix your mistakes. When I use a pencil I am always erasing and fixing the smallest things that I've done wrong, but with pen I know I cant fix it so it makes me look at the proportions more and makes me deal with my mistakes instead of just erasing them.
I actually havent used pencil in a long time unless its for a watercolor painting the pens that i use are the muji ballpoint retractable 0.5 pen
I wish I lived near a Muji! Or wish they had online shipping available in Canada 😫I'm curious to try their pens!
@@ChrisHongArt They've been my fav forever too, I wish they shipped online in canada!
@@ChrisHongArt You can find muji pens on amazon
I used to sketch with ballpoint pens all the time! I switched to use a col-erase pencil instead but maybe I should go back and use pen occasionally.
Ahh now I gotta go get myself a box of BiC pens! Love your hatch work :)
I heard Dollarama might have the assorted coloured BiC pens and now I'm itching to go see if it's true..! Thanks Tina, I've been watching all of your videos lately! :D
@@ChrisHongArt Ooh even better!! Also, omg really?! I'm honoured! T^T
@@imawonder woAh your videos are so good 0.o
Where I live you can find the bic one in lots of colours so you could check that out in the future. To have the range of line and the cute colours
The same where I live . In Brazil. Saw them somewhere in the Walmart but I didn't buy it. But I use the black one
The way you shade reminds me of Anders Zorn's etchings ...the different stroke directions add so much energy and life to these portraits 🤩
I loved seeing the style change depending on the method you used/ what you started drawing 1st
Chris :which one is your favorite?
Me: all of the above Chris, all of the above.
Also, I was getting really anxious seeing you hesitate to shade the cheeks. It's a real struggle of mine.
My family is always bewildered when I get so excited when I purchase new pens, I never knew people did Pen hauls! Wonderful video!
AND OF COURSE I JUST CAN'T STOP.
Such a mood
I really liked this video, seeing/hearing your thought process. I did like the felt tip pen the most but I’ve always loved those vintage line art pictures soooooo much. Such a big fan of your art!
Thank you, Kim! Happy to hear you enjoyed it! :)
16:40 most relatable thing ever “I don’t like how I shaded that… oh well!”
It was good to see you trying to get out of your comfort zone but trying to use pens in the same way you use pencils is like trying to drive an automatic car like you would a manual. Yes, they're both cars and yes they both take you from point A to point B but you do not interact with them in the same way as a user. I'm really looking forward to see what is going to come up when you're finally able to master these materials, I'm sure you're going to blow our minds 👍✨
I know u posted this months ago- and you may not see this message - But I just wanna say Thank you-
The way you explained what the transition is like is amazing ^^ It made a lot of sense and really helped me to understand my pen sketches better :D So thank you- thanks alot
i drew a lot when i was younger and then petered off in college, aside from low-effort doodles. but watching your videos has been really inspiring! and it's making me want to get back into it! so thank you for sharing them!! ❤
I definitely think ballpoint pens are the best for a sketching style that feels almost pencil-like . Gel ink pens like Sarasa are great but super bold and in your face! Try pentel wow ! Ballpoint pens , bic crystals are nice too😊
Your courage and bravery with the cheeks and forehead made me smile every time. I woulda froze.... subbed!
I love these draw with me! Because I get to see your process when drawing portraits, Your such a Great Artist! I always love and get inspired by you and your art work keep it up Chris
I have way too many supplies as it is. This is making me want to splurge again :O
Early! ILYY Chris, your art is so inspiring
Your pen drawings are beautiful!😍
I love sketching with pens. You inspired me so much. I loved sketching with you.
Love the left eye of the orange/green one.
the ballpoint is my daily. i saw alfonso dunn use it and i only use it now. cheapest art tool of all time. i also actually use notebook paper to jot down haha
I love the Stabilo ones 🥰 . I've always been a bit of a lost cause with those felt - tip fineliners annd classic fountain pens as I'm a pretty heavy - handed lefty. The Stabilos were nice to write with as the ink seemed to run more freely as it does in a classic biro, but it doesn't smudge as fast as fountain pen ink. Also the nibs or balls or however one might refer to them don't scratch and are sturdier than both fountain pens and regular fineliners
Zebra Sarasa Clips are my favorite gel pens but I find the 0.7 tip to be smoother and juicier. My favorite ballpoints are also a Bic pen but the SoftFeel ones, but pretty much any ballpoint is good for the range of tones you can get from a single pen. Playing with new pens is always so much fun.
i can recommend the Staedtler colored ball point multi pack.the come in a pack of 8 colores. i like them for sketching.
I love drawing with ballpoint pens. I especially like the ones from bic. It's almost like drawing with a regular pencil just that you can't erase it 😊
I really appreciate your videos like these where you’re exploring and contemplating while working real time. It influences me to be more conscious and patient and aware with my own drawing
i love all your drawings thank you. i find that felt pens are more forgiving, like using a pencil.
glad you had a good time with the bic pen!!! i was one of the people who recommended it on instagram hehe. the turquoise portrait looks so pleasing, but after seeing the process for all of them i like the bic one the most? with the zebra i could just feel the scratches and i am always looking for a juicy experience when i make art. my favourite for studies recently has been a gel pen with nO lighter lines, just stark black everything, which i enjoy because it makes me slow down and observe the reference more intensely before making my marks, but also the drawing still comes out a bit wonky in a way that i like. that might be an unpopular opinion though ^^
Thanks Chris, your art is able to do something very special to me.
Everytime I watch one of your video I feel happiness and self confidence, and most important, my love for drawing come back to life...
absolutely LOVED watching the process. Hard to choose a favorite, though I really l loved the colors in the top right!
You should try sketching people with stretched faces such as smiling etc. Its great practice!
What's a nice feature with the Papermate flair is that it is water soluble you can get some pretty cool effects using water with them. One of my favorite cheap pens to work with!
that light blue one and purple one you did was incredible. you are an amazing artist.
The color box pens are amazing I’ve used them in multimedia art a lot
I can definitely see the differences of each pen. I too liked the first pen the best. Stunning artwork! 😊
Chris you should try drawing with pen and color with color pencils. That would be really cool.
Yeahh
LOVE !! Glad I had switched from watching toxic reels/shorts kind of brain fogy numby content to something like drawing, painting in real time videos.. This is Therauptic and everyone sholud burn their time if they are not artists by watching these kind of content. Thanks.
I'd recommend the Zebra F-301 if you liked the bic, its like an even finer version of it. Unfortunately with the zebra pens it's like night and day depending which one you buy.
HOW DO YOU DRAW FACES SO NICELY OML- i want a tutorial on shading and everything. Its so nice 🥺🥺
the green and pink girl is so beautiful
Great piece of art. I appreciate the details and specifics. Thanks for sharing ❤️
You are amazing! Love your sketches! I recently started my RUclips drawing channel ✨Your video helps me to improve! And it's so aesthetic 😍
I just discovered you a few days ago. Thank you for your videos, love you style and my favorite thing is that you have your references up with your sketch/drawings. So many YTers for whatever reason dont like sharing their references let alone showing them through the entire process......much love
You made me crack up when you drew the last picture. You're like im now entering a territory i didnt want to enter lol. I think you're hilarious and so fun to watch and so informative at the same time. Such an amazing artist and I just love your content and when you do studies like this. One of my fav artists on here.
your voice is so soothing! 😂 perfect video to draw along with 😍💖
I love this video. I've seen it over and over for the last hours.. Learnt a lot from your technique! Thanks for sharing your beautiful work
Wonderful as Always 🌸 I like the first and the last.
the dankpods music in the background is delightful
Love every video, keep making them! So glad you showing your pen skills!
I started doing portrait sketches of people I know in ballpoint pen and I feel like it improved my art so fast! My favorite pen for sketching is the Pentel RSVP Fine point. It does require some cleaning of buildup over the course of a drawing session but the tip and the flow of ink are excellent.
I seriously love that second portrait
hey I recommend outlining the shadows then filling in how you want. it really helps me when I'm doing pen work.
I have just discovered your videos today! I had RUclips on and it was just going from video to video and it just so happens that I've been in my studio/laundry room drawing a portrait with a Bic Pen. I've been using Bics for a few months with tremendous success. Before this, I was pretty strictly a 0.3 mm mechanical pencil user or a 0.5 mm pencil. I've been mixing graphite and ink for a few years and I'm happy with that. I've seen some great drawings done in Bic so I decided to try it. I posted my first one on Facebook and I received several orders for portraits in this medium so I'll be making some pretty good money for the next few weeks as I get these drawn and framed. I enjoy your videos very much and it put me in a deeper zone while listening and watching you. Thanks.
I love using bic pens for lineart! They’re a lot easier for me to use as with regular fine liners, I found it hard to control them without accidentally messing up the tip. It also saves me on money too 😅
Stabilo pens are great for adding highlights to watercolor paintings.
Simplemente hermosoooo
Bic Cristal 1.6 mm pens comes in an 8 pack of different colors and are super cheap. From 4.00 US to 6.00 US. They can give amazing subtle feathering. You just need to wipe the tip now and then to keep it from glopping up. I've tried expensive pens that didn't give the same satisfying results and some that were great. But, if you're on a budget or just want to try out some fun colors, you can get amazing results with these. Thank you for reviewing this assortment it was enjoyable!
Another video already? We're truly being spoiled lol
Glad to see some of these pen tests. It's interesting to see what you can make with supplies like these!
I wasn't planning on a video since I wasn't even planning on picking up the pens when I did lol but I felt very compelled to make one!
so ready to watch this! working on something myself glad to draw along with you
Happy to keep you company while you work! :)
bic also makes a wite-out correction pen that i like to use in conjunction with a paper mate profile ball 1.4 black.
I find that when drawing with ballpoint pens it really helps to stay very light with the lines and shading. And also to kinda map out the shadow shapes before. But like the BIC pens are so good and dirt cheap. I bought like a 50pack once for school and my family (they love to do crossword puzzle thingys) and I still use them to this day, but mine get empty so I guess I'll have to buy another 50pack again soon😅😂
the Zebra Sarasa are gel pens, so the ink isn't going to work well for light feathery lines (they're my favorite pen for writing tho and I will defend them w my entire heart they're so smooth!!) I think they would work better as a fineliner type pen
Amazing
Thank you for this video, bic pens are definitely the best ever, especially the christal bold, I love them, the only problem is after you have used it for some time you get ink boogers, and have to keep a tissue nearby to wipe them out every once in a while…
The BIC pens come in different colors, i have green purple and pink, they're very fun to use, they're my favorite for my sketchbook!
When she said her first drawing didnt really look like the reference i screamed !!!!
But.... It didn't.....😕
Don't get me wrong it looks good but the likeness of the person she was drawing just isn't there...
(Plz don't get mad 😣)
@@ABIXWEEZY was just a compliment! Since i cant draw anywhere near that yes i thought it looked amazing. But if u say so ;)
Love your videos!!! 🥺❤️
I used to solely draw with micron pens almost everyday ... this was years ago and this video is making me want to get back into it
"ive been doing these studies to kinda warm up my drawing hand for the day and..."
bro those would take me *weeks* i say *WEEKS*
your upload is the highlight of my day
cross hashing is the key with shading with pens
The way she bodies everything oml
Thanks I enjoyed and I learned a lot ☺️ thanks again 😊
You’re so good, your art inspires me soooo much c:
Nice all sketch
I loved that second drawing
Chris this sketches are so pretty. Thank you for inspiration, I doubt I can produce something as good.:0
Oh what a sketchbook intro!!! Super sketches!!!
Can you please do a tutorial on how to draw like that 😭
Just amazing!! 😍😍 This inspired me to pick up a pen & draw. I always thought I don't have enough time for art but a quick pen sketch sounds good.
What a nice surprise, kewl to change it up, thanks for the upload 😀 👍👌
I love this.
Fun video. It actually helped me out today quite a bit. I have all these art supplies standing on my desk, but like today, it felt so overwhelming. What should I use? What do I even wanna make? So many options, so many questions. I feel like a beginner with basically all of it and I just bought different supplies to find my comfort zone, but apparently, my comfort zone is in the "let's think about what we wanna make and then put too much time into that so there is no time to actually make any of it." But as I watched your video I, alright I admit, out of frustration grabbed a ballpoint pen and just started doodling. It felt freeing, thank you for that. #Rant over.
Oh man! Those Stabilo pens look really nice! It looks like one of those more viscous ballpoint pens that are closer to gel ink, might have to get a few of those.... Edit: They're rollerball pens! YES I need some now
I adore your skill, amazing work
These Look all so good and your video was super relaxing, i love it 😊
Crystal BIC is my favorite go to pen.
That one teacher: '
now, I'm not an artist'
What they draw:
Absolutely Incredible Drawings.....The Green Girl with the fat twisted lips and a bit of magenta on her , I think is my favourite one !
For ur dilemma with the hair- I’d roughly map out shadows and highlights just like you do on the face, so it doesn’t seem like a bunch of lines
thx for sharing your experience with these tools.
