30k for a base model 4 cyl truck is insane, we really need to get car pricing back in check
yeah and how is this cheaper than a tacoma
First we have to get stupid people in check as they're the ones that keep propping these prices up. Just keep paying attention to that monthly payment and nothing else.
@@takoflame4948 The base Tacoma is $26k with the rear seat delete option. That's what I would call a work truck
30k is not bad for a vehicle that has off-road capabilities, 4x4 and with a strong payload/towing capacity. I much rather pay that much for a truck than a sedan with none of those capabilities
And those work trucks will literally outlive humanity lol
The upside to the headlight control is that it resets to auto after every start. The amount of dummies driving around in the dark with only their running lights and no tail lights is out of control. Apparently people these days can't be trusted to turn their lights on....
They have DRL’s and the gage lights on but no taillights. I never understood how someone could drive and not notice how there lights are not on.
I don't know why they bother having DRLs, safety at the front but not at the back.
Would be simpler and safer to just have headlights on all the time. Then you don't need a second set of lights or anything to (poorly) decide whether to turn the main lights on or not.
Maybe dashlights shouldn't be constantly illuminated. I've been tricked in the past thinking my lights were on.
Yeah and when I flash them they are clueless. I saw a cop pull one them dummies over. It made me say “Texas justice” to myself.
@@timfranko8354 yeah I use to try, pretty sure I’m batting zero in getting them to realize why I’m flashing my lights.
35k Basic truck considered to be affordable is crazy, car prices are out of
Control
Well it’s not ever going to change so….
This is the new chapter when it comes to New Car or Truck prices, we're just going to have to come up with new strategies to stack up the "Bags" in order to stay within the range of buying a new vehicle now. I'm not due for a hew vehicle until the 2025 Silverado hits the market.
Adjusting for inflation, this is affordable, in the year 2000 this would cost 19.5k
@@ottovonbismarck7094 in 2000 I bought a new Silverado 1500 for $18,000 brand new.
@@dlg720 and for only 1000 more you get double the towing and payload capacity, better fuel economy, a more comfortable interior, and more amenities than anything from 2000.
Things still cost money, it’s not the 50s anymore where everything is dirt cheap
love it when you guys do the work truck/cheaper trucks
I feel like it should be illegal for companies to make the headlight control through the screen because you can’t look through your phone but you can look through a screen on your dash same thing distracted driving.
I’m not too bothered by that. Auto mode is all I use so the switch is barely touched. If I need to change something, I’m usually always stopped and parked.
Why would you need to change your headlight settings while driving?
Am with you on that
Agree, its one of my pet peeves on modern vehicles. I just want to just be able reach for it in the dark and switch on or adjust the lighting. I don't need to have to look at a screen and then go down a couple of menu levels to do that.
@@jameshumphrey3425 Unless you have it in auto mode you could be driving down the road it’s starting to get dark then you have to turn your lights on.
I like the idea of this video, taking a look at more affordable options. the prices for cars and trucks have gone crazy. i'd be interested in seeing you guys do a used truck video, stuff from the last 5 years under 35-45k and what would be the best buys or worst.
I am digusted in the entire automotive industry. Dont see one car id buy unless i had no choice. Id rather spend 5k renting a space for a month or two and build something that doesnt use all these overly expensive cheaply made plastic buttons. Could probably build a more durable truck in a garage for less money. Have a longer lasting truck and more money.
2.7 turbo makes sense in the Colorado.I just can’t imagine it lasting that long in a Full size Silverado 1500, 4 cylinder in a full size truck is crazy.
Mine is doing just fine so far I have a 2.7 turbo in my Silverado it’s chilling you can’t do much work with it but as a daily it’s pretty comfy
@@omarmandujano6772
Oh I don’t doubt that’s it’s performing well now, I’m just worried about the longevity of it.
Longevity will be fine as long as you don't do much towing or heavy work with it. As long as you're not putting too much strain on the engine, you'll be good.
@@Yogangster1995 exactly my truck is mostly for grocery getting comfort and the occasional tow/ home improvement job. I’m a professional driver and I don’t need a big v8 or a diesel truck for my home time
@@smokeu600 Not sure why. Inline engines outlast V engines by a mile. The 2.7t is not a car engine.
The lack of a 6’ bed option is an issue definitely going to hurt sales. One of the reasons I bought my canyon was the crew cab long bed. Still a small truck but very useful in that configuration. I know a ft of bed space doesn’t sound like much but in my experience 6ft is about as short as you can go and still be useful. That number just a works. Hopefully the decide to offer a longer bed option even if it’s an extended cab to keep the wheel base the same.
Glad someone finally said the same thing I been thinking. A truck bed less than 6 feet is useless.
@@adogg619 exactly 6ft still works ok with a lot of things that the 5ft beds don’t. If they were less expensive I’d be driving a HD crew cab 8ft box but unfortunately can’t justify the cost and upkeep right now.
What’s interesting is that I had a double cab standard bed before the canyon and because I got the crew cab 6ft bed canyon there wasn’t too much sacrifice on the usefulness of the truck.
I doubt it. Most folks like a short bed since nobody tows or hauls big items. Small trucks like this are more for play and lifestyle. I would say that a 6.5 bed would be nice as a work truck. I personally don't like the looks of long beds. Ia 5 foot bed works for my needs.
I Agree, I just bought a 22 WT because I need the bed. I can barely get the tailgate shut with my tools in it as is now. There's no way I could use the new truck for work.
it won't hurt sales because the extended beds weren't selling anyways
Just 4 years ago, I bought a brand new 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie, which is loaded to the gills for $43k!! I truly can't believe how much these things cost today.
We've gone through 16.5% inflation since then! So that 43k truck would now be about 50k! And 8% of that inflation was in 2022 alone!
There are two trims above the laramie
Inflation is killing us. People keep spending though. So we keep it going. We could all start living below our means but you know that won't happen. The guy making $60k a year will buy a $60k truck. Crazy
As long as people keep paying these ridiculous prices they're just gonna keep going up. People are kicking their own selves. It's just like everything else in the world, if they quit selling then the price comes down.
@@Bikes0420 good luck with a warranty, they try ever angle they can not to cover anything.
The headlight shortcut (according to the owners manual) is that yellow lightbulb on the top left corner, that is always there.
That gauge cluster screen looks a lot bigger and nicer quality than I expected. Thanks for the video.
More affordable vehicle reviews would be nice. I duno who can afford a family of 5-6 plus mortgage and a new 45,000+ dollar vehicle, but it isn’t me!
I work a middle class job (80k a year) and have a modest mortgage (250k over 20 years) and I completely agree I simply cannot afford to be paying $1000 a month for a deprecating asset.
80k middle class? I guess I'm in poverty. But honestly I agree. Some of these truck payments are as much as my mortgage. That's why Ill just stick with my old Duramax.
@@mrsmith2876 100K in 2000 dollars is like 175K in 2023 dollars.
Thank you for this coverage. Big fan of the Work Truck trims. I think minimal features makes for a more reliable truck for the longevity. Aesthetically it's a compromise for wheels and bumper. Though, I could see myself not caring if the plastic bumper got scratched, no paint damage, its rugged.
The 5' bed kills it for me. I made the mistake of buying a Ranger, great truck except I very quickly found out that the 5' bed is just barely big enough for my needs. Wish I would have gotten a Canyon instead just for the 6' bed with crew cab.
I have a canyon with the 5' bed... While it's great for moving smaller furniture and bulky items that don't fit in an SUV, it's WORTHLESS for anything of substantial length. That being said, I absolutely love pulling a trailer with it. Plenty of torque and power and very planted road manners when hitched up.
@ Right Wing Safety Squad don't buy it then.
6' Bed is the sweet spot
Can't even fit an adult bicycle inside a 5' Bed without having to stick the wheel out or something
@Valor_X I get it, I have (now passed on to my kids) The 2005 colorado. So it's actually compact and not midsized, with the short bed. I got the bed extender. I've fit 5-6 bikes in their with that. I didn't need more than 5' all the time. But that gave me plenty of wiggle room when I need to use it for camping, for bikes, or bigger items. If you need to have a bigger bed consistently.... you're going to have to get a bigger truck. No way around it now.
@@elche1976 I wouldn't trust my fishing rods with a bed extender lol
Finally an Auto Manufacturer decided to take away the easy controls of the headlights! Way too many people driving around on the roads these days with no headlights on at night because they are too stupid to figure out how to turn them on, or accidentally turn them off and don't realize it. Auto headlights are an awesome safety feature and it should have been standard on All new vehicles 20 years ago. So many people still turn their headlights off, then forget they are off and get out on the road with them still off. Or they think they are on when only their DRLs are on. Even when someone flashes their lights at these people to let them know their lights aren't on they are often either oblivious or simply don't care. This is a wise choice by Chevrolet to do this.
About time I've always wanted you to do base truck
We need this in the TFL fleet like the old Nissan Frontier. I believe that was the best series you guys did. It is not about a 150 000$ Mercedes Brontosaurus with 9 wheel drive and 12 cylinder turbo fusion engine and massaging windshield wipers. Nobody has that kinda money. BUT THIS! We like this. When you preach to everyday people, when the paint will get scratched. Where you can use this to go to Walmart and park it next to the cart return row and not worry about the Unicorn Blood based painjob. Love the fact that you can live with a base truck. Thank you for the amazing content. Love from Longmont :)
Man it's like you guys read my mind. I was looking for a video about this truck last night.
No 6' bed=No sale. I'm going to keep my 2017 canyon crew cab 6' going for as long as I can.
Thank you for the base model work truck walk-through! I have a 2023 F-350 XL on order, and finding any photos or information on the new 2023 XL has been difficult. The expensive and fancy trucks are great, but there are features I did not want in my new truck; add that to wanting a lower-cost truck, and the XL was my choice. I expect it to arrive in March sometime as it is already produced and waiting to be shipped. I plan to do a walk-through video on it once it arrives!
Thank you, TFL, for all the great truck videos, and look forward to more base model truck updates and videos!
Philip
I might also be looking at the Ford Ranger XL when I trade next year as well, as it has features standard that are optional on the Colorado.
Now bring back a manual option. I’d buy one tomorrow.
Manual ZR2 with extended cab and 6ft bed and id be mind blown! Take my money!
Manual transfer case and hubs, too, please!
Yeah right that’ll never happen. Manual trans are done.
@@Courtney1992 in the USA anyway. they will still be made for other parts of the world because they are cheaper to produce than automatics.
Andre, there is a dedicated button that’s on the screen all the times for the headlights. You can see it the whole time your looking for the light controls. It’s that little circle in the top left.
Ready for the Autozone delivery fleet. steelies, black bumpers, halogen bulbs. $34k seems a little high for one this basic.
I wonder how long American manufacturers will go before finally making $100 LED "bulbs" standard? 2030?
Nice little Suv with that wheel barrel bed. Put two wooden handles in the taillights to aid in picking it. Why can't the OEMs offer 6 foot beds anymore???
Looking forward to seeing your new Trail Boss review. If there is one mid-size truck I'd consider over the Silverado Trail Boss it's that one.
The auto headlights make the knob superfluous. Plus this setup allows GM to make the trucks conform to Canadian headlight regulations with just a few lines of code in the infotainment unit.
Great video guys! The reality is there is a whole world out there for those of us outside the USA where american pickups are not common who have to do real work with smaller trucks like this.
Thank you for posting about the WT. This is the truck I am looking forward to buying. Only 2wd. I do not need all the bells and whistles.
"...work truck..." "...5'2" bed..."
does not compute.
I'm sure that there are jobs where that bed is sufficient. But the problem is that for a lot of jobs it's very much insufficient. Even a bed as short as 6' can be awkward for someone actually working with a truck. Lumber and other building materials often come in at 8'+, and while perhaps there are ways to lower the tailgate and brace-up above the wheel wells for plywood material, it's becomes increasingly awkward the shorter the bed is.
Additionally it's a problem for things like ladders. I can put a 7' stepladder at an angle into a pickup with a 6' bed, and this ladder is useful for most interior ceilings up to closer to 12'.
When I bought the Frontier in 2017 I did consider the Canyon/Colorado of the era, with a similar crew cab with 6' bed. But the bed sidewalls on the GMs were higher and the floor of the bed higher. This makes using the bed harder.
I only use Auto for the headlights. I don’t think I’ve ever touched the light control on my 2020 Colorado. Non issue for me.
Well ur not normal. U got a truck u dont need. Most people thst use trucks use them from sun up to sun down as for me i use the switch all the time and if i gotta climb in the truck and fiddle with the stupid screen that only works if it detects heat from ur fingers just know ima be pissed. I like being able to reach through thw window amd turn the lights on i like being able to turn lights on or off when i park without having to look at the the screen why cant they just use buttons? Buttons and switches? Why cant i just feel the switch? What if im driving and my stupid ass kids turn off the lights cus they playing with fuggen screen and we have an accident because Nebraska doesnt have street lights and theres cows and horses running wild and i hit one all because someone else had control of my headlights. Think about it. Kids are stupid shit happens
Turbo Plus engine upgrade is 1200. Sounds like a deal to me.
Yes, for something that costs GM maybe $20 extra.
Or something you can do yourself with an aftermarket tune for half that in your driveway. (May not yet be available but it probably will by year end)
@@craigquann depends if it’s solely a software change or if there are any hardware differences.

@@FrameRot no shit…he said “all new” so a comparison of the outgoing interior vs “all new” would be nice
Yup…. I literally just want to know if I can put a kids/infant seat back there. I know it will be tight, but more of an emergency use if anything we have a “family suv” already.
@@KC-xw7ql it would be fine
@@KC-xw7ql Specs say less legroom than the last gen, so it's gonna be tight.
Moving the headlight controls into the screen and having them default to “auto” actually makes sense for two reasons:
1. There is rarely a need to manually turn the headlights on or off in a vehicle with automatic headlights. Manufacturing a physical switch that is minimally used is a bit of a cost waste.
2. The amount of people I see driving in pitch dark with either only daytime running lights, or no lights at all, has proven to me that Americans no longer have the intelligence to be trusted to manually operate their headlights. The fact that this truck defaults to “auto” is a good thing for all of us.
That's a great price for a good 4wd midsized truck. If I hadn't bought a '22 Ranger Tremor 1yr ago that I absolutely love..I'd consider it for a solid extra truck for family. This will be a big seller & should be! 💯
Beautiful interior. Love the 4x4 feat. It’s a wonderful truck for what you can afford. Happy Monday everyone.

I hope they think of making a two door long bed, short beds are crap for the kind of work you need a pick up for. manual box please !
I'd love to believe that, but the way trucks are turning into SUVs, I doubt it.
So a question on the headlight controls; I know they are automatic, but there is no physical control to turn on the headlights if you want them on before the automatic sensor thinks it is dark enough?
Missing the extended cabs of the gm twins. A newer Canyon extended cab would be my first choice

The loss of a headlight switch makes my blood boil... I don't even like using auto headlights when there is a switch, for goodness sakes! I turn my headlights on and off every time.
Me control truck. Truck not control me
This truck is promising but GM dropped the ball in several areas. Not offering a lower cost extended cab or a longer bed is mistake number 1. Second is the total lack of interior color choices on the lower trim WT and LT versions. 3rd why can't the WT buyer get some better optional alloy wheels like you could on the previous model Colorado? 4th as mentioned making the headlights adjustable only through the touch screen is an obvious cost cutter as is the lack of under hood silencer pad as shown on this truck. 5th is the price. Option up even the most basic 4X4 WT with a few things and your already pushing 40K. Work up to the LT and your into 43-45K which is what an LT Silverado was a few short years ago. Vehicles are getting way to expensive and quite unaffordable for the masses!
I'll be adding this exact truck to my fleet.

The more I see and learn about the 2023's the more I'm glad I ordered a 2022 Gmc Canyon Denali Black Edition, crew cab, 6ft bed, 3.6 v6.
I bought a new Colorado Trail Boss, but if I bought a WT 4x4 I would put aggressive off road tires on those 17inch steel wheels, it would look awesome, I love steel wheels like those!
Great video!! The only thing, that annoys me, is the wheel cap... The company I work for, owns 2 Silverado 1500 WT... One of them has the steel wheels with the gray cap to cover the wheel bolts... At first when new it wasn't a problem. But by time, de cap goes loose and flys away when driving mostly on highways or rough terrain... Those Wheel caps, they just won't hold... Overall, Chevy is great to me...
I wish it came out with a better looking wheel as an option (I have that on my '21 Colorado and I got extras on top of that. These packages offered now don't cut it for me.).
Question! What sound system does this or the base have is it still bose?
For another 1k they could just put the LED headlights in rather than those awful halogens. Putting basic controls in the screen is a big no no for me.
Andre overlooked the fact that auto headlights are standard. You won’t have to touch them and the bright switch is still on the truck
When I was in college I had a W/T Silverado, and the only luxury it has was A/C. That new Colorado is incredibly nice for a work model.
Love the truck, Andre!
Is this like the Silverados where you only get a stupid single speed transfer case. Was thinking about one of these but I'm kinda iffy on them only having a 5ft bed and fully digital gauges.
Can you get a Colorado in a 8’ bed and in a dullay with a manual 8 speed trans with a 4 BT Cummins would that be the boss or not ?

I see they added quite a large screen for this work model yet when they did the Silverado/ sierra refresh they went cheap on the work ,custom and custom trail boss. Redesign the interior and they couldn’t make maybe a 10 inch screen for those models. 🤷🏽♂️🤔
Does that mean the work truck that has the entry level engine have better mpg then the turbo plus?
I like that GM uses the same size infotainment screen. They are smart in that its not going to take a jab at those wanting a more affordable truck and will likely cost GM less since they will have fewer parts to control on the supply chain. Also just having one size bed will likely make the assembly line move faster. Because with only the one plant at Wentzville their biggest challenge will be supply. They could probably sell 200K of these/year if they had the capacity. That has been the biggest downfall for midsizes. (outside of Toy that has two plants in mexico)
The bed length thing is a curious one, because the Colorado is based on the Isuzu DMax, and that is available in three bed lengths.

Maybe I'm used to my 1/2 ton, but that cabin area looks smaller than before? (I used to have a Tacoma, that looks smaller than I remember for a mid-sized.)
Colorado cabin was and still is larger than Tacoma. I believe the back seat has 1" less legroom than before.
I think a better deal is the Colorado Trail Boss. The 4WD WT is around $34k, the trail boss $38.5 k. The additional $4.5 K buys you the more powerful 310 hp/391 lb.ft engine, two speed transfer case, locking diff, off road suspension with 2” lift, bigger more capable 32” all terrain tires on 18” alloy rims and a fancier interior and exterior.
Yup! But will you actually be able to get one for 38k. If so I'll I may have to get one
I’m liking this new Colorado. Especially the WT and TrailBoss.
Add the 4x4 only is $35k+ already…i don’t think it’s affordable at all 🤣
I want an extreme base model vehicle like this but with one feature, Automated Cruise Control. I'll crank my window up on my own, now worries. Vinyl seats, easy to clean. Rubber floor, perfect. Ugly white paint, cooler in the summer. Bad speakers, they're fine for podcasts. Tiny steel wheels, nice enough. But Auto Cruise is a must for any new vehicle for me!!!
Base model vehicles don't have push button start, auto headlights, automated climate control, and feet of fancy touchscreens. No actual base model available. It's why these things are so expensive. Truly sad.
I built a 2023 and adaptive cruise control is an option in one of the add on packages!
I wish this had vinyl seats.
@@crlaw75 I do prefer a cloth seat option, but would not have an issue with vinyl. I wish it at least had a split bench seat in front instead of the useless console and buckets.
It's just that vinyl is easy to clean, in case of dirt or a spill. My last three Colorados had vinyl seats, but the driver's seat material started to split and replaced it on the '18. but GM pays for it once.
But, Chevrolet wants to charge $1,400 (!) for this Ecotex vinyl seating?!
Andre, did I catch you looking for the tow hooks?
I currently drive a '12 Chevy 2500 6.5' bed that I bought new. Looking to downsize in the near future but the new Colorado with only a 5' bed would have me looking elsewhere first. NUTS!
