Thank you! I’m currently going through Benzo Withdrawal which are horrifically painful. The benzodiazepine I had taken down-regulated my Gaba receptors so my body and mind are in fight or flight all the time- it is exhausting to say the least. This helps me. It can take many months for these Gaba receptors to heal.
Breakdown - we need a Good Energy Metabolism = Thyroid & Insulin balance for proper energy system. Glutamate > (Mg & ATP) = Glutamine Glutamine > (B6) = GABA GABA to function - by electrolytes (salt, potassium) No crazy diet methods And mindfulness meditation
Yeah I dunno, he started with saying glucose is needed to make GABA, but then advocates keto later. It's good to know components, but don't lose sight of forest from the trees.
Keto is the worse thing you can do if you're trying to increase GABA. You're dramactly decreasing glucose, raising stress hormones (cortisol helps with gluconeogensis). Going very low carb reduces T3 dramactily. Horrible idea. Only thing good about Keto is the short term weight loss benefits and it keeps you away from junk food and helps with satiety.
@@RobertLongM Check out the research and work of Dr. Ray Peat. He goes into detail why Keto is so dangerous. Why leads to insulin resistance the longer you do it which is funny because most think it helps insulin resistance. Chris Masterjohn actually agrees with many of the things in Ray Peat's model. Cheers & stay healthy!
Health is an emotional state, just like peace. When your mind is threatened by what you perceive to be an enemy then it cannot heal. Nurture yourself. A pill, food, or person will never be able to give you what you need except yourself.
What you say is partially true but we all very and I've done all the practices that didn't involve supplements. Now that I use supplements, I've been able to cut most of hose practices substantially and still achieve a healthy State of Mind. Supplementing with magnesium alone cut my minimum required yoga time to not have scoliosis symptoms down to 20% of the yoga that I used to have to do. Most people have micronutrient deficiencies. Some people have much greater symptoms from these deficiencies and deficiencies vary from person to person.
Thanks for sharing your research and insights. When I supplement with glutamine (for gut healing) I notice no neurological effects while supplementing (physically there are some effects.) But upon ceasing supplementation, about 24 hours later, terrible effects develop that tick most of the boxes for low GABA (anxiety, muscle twitches, unpleasant ideation, sweating [at night], excessive thirst and urination). Most of the worst symptoms occur at night, beginning at bedtime. It is dose dependent; the higher the dose I have been taking, the longer it takes to normalize after cessation. Could it really be low GABA, or something else I am overlooking? (BTW, many of my symptoms also fit high serotonin). Thanks again!
Is it - to your knowledge - possible, that the GABA metabolism is impaired in the fetus through the intake of Benzodiazepines during pregnancy? Do you have any idea how to support in that situation in a now adult person affected?
Wow this really turned on a light for me. I was wondering why gaba positive modulator supplements (skullcap, magnolia, etc) were making me more sedated on keto.
Correct me if I’m wrong, I eat all the necessary foods mentioned in the video, but my unstable insulin jeopardizes the making of Gaba, if I take a Gaba supplement, will my Gaba get to a normal level despite the insulin issue? Are there side effects if I stop taking the Gaba supplement? Thanks
Or if your Receptors are downregulated - then it won’t matter how much GABA is there. I guess then we need BDNF / NGF nootropics OMG! That makes sense “glucose” which is why Alcohol is like liquid Benzo!
Glutamate sensitivity likely means you're not shunting enough down the GABA pathway so the glutamate concentration rises to neurotoxic levels. A B6 deficiency is likely the culprit.
Well, respectfully, that is not really correct. Keto means low exogenous glucose intake but the liver still keeps blood suger stable from gluconeogenesis. I am on a very low carb diet and my blood suger is super stable according to my CGM. I also cured my type 2 diabetes in 4 weeks going strict keto. By week four I was insulin sensitive again as shown by a bolus test with carbs. I got an Immediate glucose spike, then a drop and 2 to 3 hours later a flatline , normal glucose level. Chris is exactly right. Keto diets balance glutamate toxicity and raise gaba. They even lower the need for Benzos and reduce seizures in people detoxing from alcohol. Part of that is the ketones replace alcohol ( or acetate, a ketone body produced from alcohol) as a brain fuel. The other part is keto diets are usually rich in animal foods and high in nutrients including glutamine and b vits.
It sounds like the most important thing is to fix the insulin and stabilize it as well as fixing any thyroid issue and perhaps inflammation too? That way, all the vitamins, etc. would do their jobs? Thank you😊
First, she said we had to get her blood sugar up and then you said keto diet was good for GABA. I thought you would have to cut out carbs wouldn’t that lower your blood sugar?
This seems to explain why taking GABA directly makes matters worse for me. Even the smallest of doses knocks me on my butt, but does little to help with sleep and leaves me with an AM hangover.
there is a supplement that has all of this in it except "meditation" of course, it's called "MOOD" by "NOW", but I've been told that GABA supplements cannot cross the brain blood barrier (BBB)
Pretty confusing...This is how it works naturally: fasting (Omad) and carnivore.fasting releases Gaba production and carnivore -diet combined makes it a perfect match.I feel everyday Gaba -euphoria and its awesome! Very calm and relaxed still I can burst into action rapidly if needed.Highly focused through a day.Natural high🎉
Why focus on increasing glutamate when you can easily supplement glutamine and be one step closer to gaba synthesis? Glutamine itself can be converted into glutamate if glutamate is low. I use glutamine as a pre and post workout supplement to decrease stress on the central nervous system. Works very well. I suppose because of increasing gaba. Not to mention the effect of reducing sugar cravings.
I was talking about the *normal route of synthesis.* Glutamine is a *minor* way of generating GABA. The brain burns through 120 grams of glucose a day, most of which has the potential to generate glutamate, which is the overwhelming precursor to GABA under all conditions.
@@chrismasterjohn Thanks for your answer! I am a bit confused though, since the Brain uses glucose primarily as an energy source, would not only a surplus of it be available for gaba synthesis? From my personal experience glutamine does significantly reduce the initial impact of weight training to failure on the cns while dextrose, even in much higher amounts, does not. I suspected gaba synthesis to be the reason but maybe there is another mechanism? (or placebo, but the effect has been very reliable for me)
Don Duchane advocated 5/2 days per week ketogenic diet for bodybuilders. 2 days of carbohydrates ( recomposition ) feels good for GABA. Ketogenic diet , CONTINUOUS is very harmful , and very Depressive.

Nutritional yeast has glutamic acid in it, which may increase glutamate, something to be aware of for people who have glutamate sensitivity.
You could offset increased glutamate with increased B6
Very informative and easily understandable. Good job!
You just gave me another reason to carry on eating loads of Roquefort cheese... very high in glutamate! 👍

GLP-1 stimulates pancreatic GABA production and GLP-1 production is stimulated by consumption of Omega 3 FAs.
Deadly water hemlock kills by destroying one's GABA. Maypop is an edible plant that is high in GABA.
Why keto diet increases GABA?
Ketosis( not a fan) has a dramatic effect on gabba, ask any epileptic. This is downstream of course.
