I'd just like to add that another use for B6 is to treat high levels of endogenous oxalate production. B6 is a cofactor in the conversion of glyoxylate (a precursor to oxalate) into glycine. Insufficient B6 levels can contribute to higher endogenous oxalate production, and supplemental B6 can be used to help treat oxalate issues caused by genetic issues (primary hyperoxalurias), oxidative stress, excessive collagen consumption, or ethylene glycol poisoning. Polyethylene glycol 3350 is a common laxative that can form ethylene glycol and cause high levels of endogenous oxalate production in some cases. B6 may be helpful for people taking this medication as well.
This is a very interesting comment! What about oxalates from foods? Does it help with it? And what do you mean by excessive collagen consumption? Collagen in the form of powders or from food like bone broth? And what is excessive ? Is 20g of collagen daily considered excessive?
Another, anecdotal symtom of b6 deficiency is no dreams while you sleep. This is per my inegrative md. Once you decide to take supplement p5p you can monitor the dose by when the dreams start ocuuring. Stay on that dose taken before bedtime. Worked for me like a charm.
thanks so much, last time i took p5p i thought it rekt me but it coulda been something else i stopped around the same time! i'm using whey isolate now so i'm probably gonna run low, and i *never* wake up remembering a dream! haven't for years!
As a physician that deals w this in practice I’m concerned about a few things here. First and most important, b6 deficiency is very rare, but toxicity is common among those that supplement generously. I have seen severe polyneuropathy several times where mega dosing of B6 was the cause- as recommended by the patient’s healthcare provider. Blood levels above 60 are neurotoxic and cause various neuropathies and memory problems and I’ve seen as high as 480. Stopping b6 certainly improves symptoms but it can take months and many do not fully recover. Also, the b6 blood test must be fasting, it will be inaccurate if you do it after eating. I would recommend no more than 50mg per day despite the fda safe upper limit of 100. Typically people don’t need to supplement it at all to get enough unless their diet is truly awful, but then the issue is fixing their diet rather than supplementing. B1 and b12 are different and may need supplementation in otherwise healthy people but please be careful with b6.
To top it off consumerlab.com tested some b6 supplements and some of them had more than quoted on the bottle. My Organic Acid Test showed my pyroxic acid level to be very low and consquently the neurotransmitter metabolites to be very low and oxalic acid to be a little high. Also my homocysteine is a little high. I take it I need to supplement with b6. Country Life and Seeking Health sell P5P in lower amounts, 20mg and 25mg. I bought empty size 2 gel caps and divide the 20mg capsule into thirds. Its been a month now and my moods have started to improve on just 6mg or 7mg of P5P but maybe I need to monitor levels with the fasting/non fasting in mind.

I quit all b6 supplements long time now, last was in december that I took maybe 5x a bcomplex that had 50mg b6. what other test can I do?

You should remove the thing that initiated the symptoms, which according to you is the B complex. These are way too non-specific to narrow down the probability.

I had to do a highly restricted elimination diet: no sugar, no wheat, no dairy, low histamine and low oxalate. Difficult but worth it! I'm mostly carnivore now, with a little goat/sheep milk products. Good luck. You CAN cure your skin issues, albeit slowly and with a few flare-ups.
@@chrismasterjohn So ive found that b vitamins from coal tar has 10 000 elements in them of which 5000 has been given names to..... This is not the same as b-vitamins from foods and i would be careful honestly.
I disagree about the B6 serum test. That test is highly inaccurate, often high when the patient is actually low. I've run the test many times and my colleagues all say the same.
Do you have any idea why someone would get numbing in the extremities from taking b vitamins? not just b6, but any b vitamin? I can’t find a reason anywhere. I’m definitely deficient proved by testing, yet I can’t tolerate any supplementation. Had no issues using a b complex for many months and then all of the sudden, it’s like my body wouldn’t process them. I do have low thyroid at the moment so I’m wondering if that has anything to do with it.
Well, that you tolerated supplementation then stopped suggests to me that you're overdosing on one or more of them. Perhaps you're getting the wrong lab tests.
Thanks so much for your reply Chris! The test I had run was Spectra-cell Micronutrient Test which showed a major deficiency in most of the b vitamins, especially B5. This is not surprising to me though because I also have celiac which has caused malabsorption. The test was taken about 2 months after being off of any b vitamins. Since then I’ve tried taking every kind of b complex I could find including, all activated forms, food based forms etc. I even went as far as trying them separately, and they all numb me to a degree including biotin! I do get some b vitamins through desiccated liver with no problem, but would like to supplement with a b complex if possible based on how much better I feel when taken. If you have any ideas I would greatly appreciate it!
@@Pianoshark2 I recommend against Spectracell. They're methodology is not validated and I have seen cases where they give recommendations that are the opposite of what I'd give based on other bloodwork. I have an ebook on testing nutritional status here: chrismasterjohnphd.com/cheatsheet
Andrew: it's B6 and possibly B12 as well although B6 is probably the main culprit. See Dr. Michael Waddington 's comment in this thread. Yes, it's neuropathy and I have had this years ago and not only my toes lost sensation so was my tongue. He tested it by using a sound fork. When the fork first touched my toe, I could felt its vibration. After one or two seconds, he was about to move the fork to another toe when I told him that the vibration had stopped. He then put the fork on my finger and it was still vibrating! At first my neurologist thought that I might have B6 and B12 deficiency. But when I told him that I was taking a supplement that contains B complex as well my diets should supply plenty of B6 (such banana, dried plums, and even some herb teas, such Celestial Seasonings' Tension Tamer which I drank 2 to 3 bags almost daily then), he replied, 'then it's caused by excess B6 (and B12).' The blood tests indeed show that I had very HIGH level of B6 and B12. I asked him, 'Isn't B6 a water soluble vitamin? Shouldn't our body expel the excess?' Well, yes, it's a water soluble vitamin and no, not for B6.
@@loudiaz1292 It is actually chemically different even after the phosphate is removed by your digestive system. Pyridox*al* is what your body knows as vitamin B6, whereas pyridoxine first hast to be converted.

It’s calming and good for my skin. I think you’re better off with b6 hcl if you add the cofactors for its activation.
What if my b6 levels are slightly avoided “normal” but I’m showing deficiency on OATs test I also have mutations, adhd, and symptoms that point towards the need of b6
@@chrismasterjohn You mentioned its part of the b6 pathway to activate it in the video. If someone was b6 toxic how would someone speed up the rate the body removes b6?
I think the b6 toxicity from supplements is really not a toxicity of overdose per se but an abundance of inactive b6 floating around and causing trouble . Eg by blocking b6 receptors. Thus I believe b2 (inactive form) can speed up recovery. B2 requires selenium iodine and molybdenum itself though from what I read
@@elitemangudai1016 That's right. I don't know what can speed up recovery but B6 would not be toxic if all the necessary cofactors were present (B2, B9, B12, Zinc) B2 itself requires iodine and selenium to function well, people have serious nutritional problems and don't realize it. 90% of people who have problems with B6 have taken large doses of B6 alone (without the other B vitamins) or have a problematic liver without knowing it. Or they bought bad quality supplements.
Hi Chris, I recently took an OAT and the results showed that I'm low on Vitamin B6. I started supplementing with Nature's Way B6 50mg(pyridoxine HCL and pyridoxal-5-phosphate) but I've had two mayor side effect. The first one being insomnia, I chalked it up as taking it way too late in the day, so today I started taking it really early in the day (6-7am). The second side effect is major hair shedding. What could be causing the hair shedding?
Other B vitamins and magnesium. I developed insomnia from high dose vitamin D supplementation. At first it got better with magnesium, then it stopped working. Then I took high dose vitamin B complex and it improved somewhat, but to really resolve I had to take all of the above. Many nutrients can cause each other's deficiencies (by increased usage because they work together, for example) so you need almost always a combination of them.
B6 changed my life in a very positive mental health way, but it caused me to look old as hell and shed tons of hair. I'd love to know if there is anyway to mitigate that?
there we go, make sure your gut and liver are healthy and you will not have an issue with B6 deficiency. Animal protein is an easy way but not a better way
@@chrismasterjohn It is an unusual connection, but it would seem that having a second metatarsal that is longer than the first (big toe smaller than second toe - also known as Greek foot) is an indicator that you do not metabolise B6. My question was aimed at finding out what the pathway was which caused that.
Probably safer to take it with other B vitamins as well. There are cases where doses from 50 to 100 mg vitamin B6 daily by itself caused neuropathy; whereas I read one study where alcoholics could take 750 mg vitamin B6 (!) + 750 mg thiamine + 30 mg riboflavin + 3 mg folic acid + 60 µg cyanocobalamin daily for 12 weeks without any adverse symptoms. Of course these were alcoholics but it's possible the thiamine etc. prevented toxicity.

My vitamin B is too high. Do not know how to lower it
Just avoid it, b6 is flushed by body, cuz it's water soluable
Can you really absorb as much as 100mg b6 in a day?
It doesn't matter how much you absorb, it matters whether you absorb more than if you take less, which you obviously do.
I have bouts of hypoglycemia and I cannot fast or go on a keto diet since that would make me very dizzy. What am I more likely to be deficient in? Is it B6 or B2? I also have plenty of dandruff and acne. I never had any of these symptoms before starting a b complex(I started taking B complex a few months ago). Should I supplement both B6 and B2 isolated?
You should remove the thing that initiated the symptoms, which according to you is the B complex. These are way too non-specific to narrow down the probability.
@@chrismasterjohn Thank you for your reply, I removed B-Complex I'm feeling better too. But I don't feel as best as before supplementing. I'm trying to find solutions for my problem, and I'm watching plenty of your videos. If there is a way I can get your help personalised for me, I would be very happy. Is there a way to reach you? 🙂
Dear Docter, I bought your nutrional cheat sheet and its very insightfull, can you give me your input though on my case: My b6 was 700nmol/l in 7/6/17, 106nmol/l in 9/5/17..note the drastic drop in 2 months.. then 247 in 10/17/17 then 76 in 1/31/18 then drastic surge to 347 in 3/19/19 then back to 80 in 6/6/17....I have now tingling in both hands and feet more than back then when it was 700....I dont know what to do my b1 was aroun 180 all throut, b12 was aroun 550 and 650 all thruout..my homoceistein was tested first time recently 9 umol/l. Back then when my b6 was around 700 I used to take a multi vitamine that had 75mg b6 maybe for a total of 1 month daily then I stopped, but then many months later it seemed as if I took about maybe 5 in the course of a month the levels surged again, I dont know what do know, as my emg came out ok.. I quit all b6 supplements long time now, last was in december that I took maybe 5x a bcomplex that had 50mg b6. what other test can I do?
Best regards,
Benoit
Chris do you have any thoughts on altering one's diets in order to treat psoriasis?
Please submit a topic request here: chrismasterjohnphd.com/contact-chris-masterjohn-phd/#topic
I had to do a highly restricted elimination diet: no sugar, no wheat, no dairy, low histamine and low oxalate. Difficult but worth it! I'm mostly carnivore now, with a little goat/sheep milk products. Good luck. You CAN cure your skin issues, albeit slowly and with a few flare-ups.
vit D + Mg + high dose B vitamin complex did wonders for me. Sun exposure also helps.

ISent the fact the synthetic b6 is made from coal tar derivatives a concern in your opinion?
Well it is better to eat food, but I don't see the point about coal tar derivatives. Are there contaminants?
@@chrismasterjohn It has been found that they modulate the b6 receptors somehow. Thats what ive read but i coudl be BS
👍
See

's comment in this thread.
Nobu Sha It’s not just b6 and b12 though. It even happens when I take thiamin or riboflavin separately or any b vitamin.
How much p5p is equivalent to 10mg b6?
10mg may not end up as the equal amount of active p5p as i understand it.
You should treat them as identical. Calculating the difference from the different molar mass of pyridoxine and pyridoxal phosphate is not useful.
I’m finding pyridoxine HCL in the top B6 supplements tested by Labdoor. Is that okay or do I really need ones that show P5P? Thanks
I recommend P5P.
@@chrismasterjohn whats the difference?
@@loudiaz1292 pyridoxine hcl is not b6 its crap
@@loudiaz1292 It is actually chemically different even after the phosphate is removed by your digestive system. Pyridox*al* is what your body knows as vitamin B6, whereas pyridoxine first hast to be converted.
@@superdupergacha374i tried both for an extended period and while they work differently I think p5p is bad for individuals with health problems. B6 hcl has risk of overdose however supplementing it with b2 molybdenum selenium and iodine removes that problem.
As for the effects p5p doesn’t have an effect on my psyche but b6 hcl does.
You probably need more B6
@@chrismasterjohn thanks!
Could Riboflavin be used to speed up b6 toxicity recovery?
Why would it do that?
@@chrismasterjohn You mentioned its part of the b6 pathway to activate it in the video. If someone was b6 toxic how would someone speed up the rate the body removes b6?
@@greyfoxzero I saw a comment that B3 balances B6. Need to do more research on this
I think the b6 toxicity from supplements is really not a toxicity of overdose per se but an abundance of inactive b6 floating around and causing trouble . Eg by blocking b6 receptors. Thus I believe b2 (inactive form) can speed up recovery. B2 requires selenium iodine and molybdenum itself though from what I read
@@elitemangudai1016
That's right.
I don't know what can speed up recovery but B6 would not be toxic if all the necessary cofactors were present (B2, B9, B12, Zinc)
B2 itself requires iodine and selenium to function well, people have serious nutritional problems and don't realize it.
90% of people who have problems with B6 have taken large doses of B6 alone (without the other B vitamins) or have a problematic liver without knowing it.
Or they bought bad quality supplements.
Hi Chris,
I recently took an OAT and the results showed that I'm low on Vitamin B6.
Has your insomnia improved? And if so how long it took to improve?
Other B vitamins and magnesium.
I developed insomnia from high dose vitamin D supplementation. At first it got better with magnesium, then it stopped working. Then I took high dose vitamin B complex and it improved somewhat, but to really resolve I had to take all of the above. Many nutrients can cause each other's deficiencies (by increased usage because they work together, for example) so you need almost always a combination of them.
DRIGO V: How are you today ?
I take my B6 to Bed time coz make me sleapy .
B6 changed my life in a very positive mental health way, but it caused me to look old as hell and shed tons of hair. I'd love to know if there is anyway to mitigate that?
How did it make you look old? How much have u been taking and for how long?
Why didn’t you mention toxicity at all?
there we go, make sure your gut and liver are healthy and you will not have an issue with B6 deficiency. Animal protein is an easy way but not a better way
Bananas are the highest, nutr yeast. Among animal sokeye salmon is highest but still you will get not enough
How does having Morton's Toe factor into B6 deficiency?
I don’t know sorry.
@@chrismasterjohn It is an unusual connection, but it would seem that having a second metatarsal that is longer than the first (big toe smaller than second toe - also known as Greek foot) is an indicator that you do not metabolise B6. My question was aimed at finding out what the pathway was which caused that.
If I take pyridoxine 100mg, is it necessary to combine it with the other b vitamines, or can I take b6 100mg only for an amount of time?
Probably safer to take it with other B vitamins as well. There are cases where doses from 50 to 100 mg vitamin B6 daily by itself caused neuropathy; whereas I read one study where alcoholics could take 750 mg vitamin B6 (!) + 750 mg thiamine + 30 mg riboflavin + 3 mg folic acid + 60 µg cyanocobalamin daily for 12 weeks without any adverse symptoms. Of course these were alcoholics but it's possible the thiamine etc. prevented toxicity.
Have you changed your stance on P-5-P since you don't advocate R-5-P due to Phosphate cleavage?
No. The phosphate is irrelevant. With P5P what is important is that it is pyridoxal and not pyridoxine.
@@chrismasterjohn Thanks!

Can b6 correct convulsive seizures?
P5P is a bio-available form of B6, don't take synthetic version. And also most of the times B vitamins has to be taken as a b complex or individually but along with other b vitamins, cause they need each other to be balanced. I'm not a Dr, doing ur own research is the best advice
And as mentioned in video, you can do blood test to check B6 deficiency before starting supplements
