    As a Finnish speaking person I really love both of these versions, but it might be because I'm a bit of a language nerd and absolutely adore how nicely the translations are done - not literally but with the story/thoughts behind them first, making you realize new things from both of the versions! I also think Hietala has said that originally he wrote some of the songs in English and some of them in Finnish. He has said that the more personal songs (such as Isäni ääni) were generally first written in Finnish but Stones (Kiviä in Finnish, if you are interested in listening it) was first written in English, if I'm not mistaken. So these would actually be the 'original' lyrics :)

      I always wondered whether non-English composers/songwriters do it in their native language first, then translate it to English.

    • @roosamuukkonen4174
      @roosamuukkonen4174 4 года назад +2

      @@ChrisPage68 Besides your own language skills, I'd say it also depends on personal preference. If I want to write something in English (or some other language I have a little bit stronger grasp on) I like to write it straight into English so that it flows better, as something that sounds great in one language might not be so in another, making translating a tricky process anyway. Weirdly enough, once you become more fluent in more than one language (and especially if you use them a lot), it can be easier to use some other than your native tongue depending on the situation :D I assume that's what happened with the songs on this album, too

      That said I do think his vocals sound kind of freer in the Finnish version. And I really like the sea shanty-like 'Hoi/Ahoy' of it, as it really fits the mental image of star-travelling stones sailing through space and smashing absolutely everything on their way :D

    I have watched so many reactions to this song already that it's started to grow on me, although I also prefer the Finnish lyrics. Marco will be supporting Nightwish in South-America in 2020, which means that he'll be doing two gigs on every Nightwish show location there. Lets hope he has the energy. P.S. This is like a successor to Tarot. This song in particular reminds me of Tarot's song Howl!. I love Tarot, and I love this. It's been stuck in my head for the past few days.

    When it comes to double language releases I usually go with the native language of the singer. Partly because it feels more authentic and partly just because it is nice hearing songs in languages you don't understand.
    Though I can only thing of three albums on the top of my head that did that: Sabatons Carolus Rex, Opeths In Cauda Venenum and Die Toten Hosens Reich und Sexy/Love, Peace & Money. And for the last one the whole part about not understanding the language doesn't even apply. XD

    Just went and listened to the Finnish version... Listening to how the original lyrics fit into the music, its hard to argue that the original is not better. It has a flow that the English version does not have. That being said the English version is awesome and I appreciate Marko throwing it out to us.

    Waiting for that smoke signal language from Marko.... But yeah, I'm so with Antonio. Translating lyrics, like poetry, to another language is tricky. AND you are more in touch with your native language: that tends to come through.
    What helps the Finnish version, is that the word for stones comes in the BEGINNING of each sentence while in English it comes as the LAST word: and it doesn't sound as repetitive.
    No matter what the lyrics, the instrumentals were good.

    I've listened to the whole Finnish album, and the Finnish version of this song, "Kiviä", is actually part of my playlist. So, when "Stones" came out, after a first listen, it sounded strange. Still good, but strange. It has since grown on me quite a lot. I really dig it. At this point, I can't say which version I like best.

    I love this song. Do you hear the Dio influence in this song? Marco must love Ronnie. His vocal phrasing is very much like Dio. Especially the ending vocal vamps over the chorus and the middle change when the guitar riff gets heavier. The chorus may sound like pop to you if you compare it to Slayer. I think the chorus is catchy but still pretty heavy if you listen to the guitar riff. Remember Marco goes back to the 80's and 90's and has many influences from the godfathers of metal. You guys are into very heavy stuff judging from your t-shirts Great reaction and analysis. Rock on!

    Antonio has a point. I like Christmas is Here in English but I like the Elize Ryd and Tony Kakko Swedish version better. Pieni Rumpali I don't think I'd want ever want to hear a English version of that because it would lose the emotion to it. I love Stones though. Btw the other guitarist is Tuomas who Marko does a Christmas tour with every year with other singers like Floor, Tommy from Kamelot, Tarja, Elize from Amaranthe etc.

    I've listened to both, Finnish and English. Both are great, that their respective charms. In Finnish is the more natural and flowing, with a translation into English doesn't always allow the same flow. But I appreciate being able to understand the lyrics, which to me had a blues feel to it. Though I do think that knowing that there was another version perhaps gave a colored perception. That can prevent appreciating the song on it's own terms.
