You sill need a real one. This gives you more time to wait for a donor when nothing else will help, but if you want to continue on, you will still need an actual heart. It's a huge breakthrough though as it is virtually impossible to wear out, since there is no friction between moving parts. It's certainly better than the Jarvik heart from 40ish years ago.
Total artificial hearts have been around for a while... the only thing new about this is its material and drive mechanism. TAH's and VADs have bridged tons of people to transplant or been destination therapy for years.

What an amazing story! The big, genuine smiles on this guy! It is just so heartwarming that he will now be able to see his children grow up! He is one brave dude too. Take it from someone who once spent almost 2 consecutive months in the hospital receiving treatment for cancer: It is no easy feat to bounce back and heal from something like this! I can't imagine it. As difficult as my experience was, HIS had to have been 10 times more difficult! I don't think I could have mustered the strength to go through what he did. This is one of those stories that really brings tears of joy to your face.
Very happy for this man. I have heart disease, as do a number of people in my family. It's incredible to see that we now have the potential to alloy flesh with metal to continue lives that aren't ready to end. Gives me a great sense of hope not only for myself in later years, but for my mother.

It’s likely at a fixed rate. I don’t believe we have the technology to adjust the rate like our heart does. I think to do that it would need to measure adrenaline levels and brain signals to tell it to speed up or slow down.

Previous total artifical hearts like the one from Syncardia have a set "heart rate" but the cardiac output (the thing that matters) changes based on the amount of venous return - which is linked to activity level, among other things. Long story short, if previous TAHs could adjust their output, I'm sure this fancy new one can.
