Brad, You nailed this. A lot of folks don't even know about Sock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance. This was the first time I saw him and after the show I bought the CD...this is like Rick Springfield on Steroids...it just rocks!!!!
Thank you very much for the kind words, Pattie. I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. It means a lot to connect with like-minded people. :) SDAA is very hard to beat. (hard to hold? lol)
Rick actually did a small club tour in the early 90’s just to get a feel of whether or not his fan base was still there. And of course, we were. I have met him three times and he is an awesome down to earth, humble human being. In my opinion, one of the greatest songwriters ever.
Thank you so much for watching and taking time out from your day to comment. There are so many things I would want to say if I met him.....I'd probably just embarrass myself. That is so cool that you've met him 3 times! I saw him on the Karma tour for the first time.
@@sammorabito8898 I don't think I'd be wasting my time discussing which albums of his I don't like if I had the chance. The same way he wouldn't waste his time watching this video. Besides, it's not like I had VIO listed at the very bottom.
Thanks for doing this. Your assessment is spot on! The Shock album is one that I have shared with many. It just hits you with the initial guitar riff. An absolute classic album.
@@BradCarlMusic You're welcome. Rick is my favorite of all time. And there's so many artists to choose from, from the 60s to current artists and live the man never fails to deliver.
I grew up with Rick in the 80’s. Absolutely adore him. I would have put Tao higher, but the way you explain your order is well discussed. I enjoyed your video.
Great video! Did you know that Rick recorded the whole "Songs for the end of the world" acoustically? It was available as a download/streaming only... its worth a listen
As a fellow first-generation male Rick fan, I appreciated this video. Really great live performer as well. Alive is one of my favorite live albums of all time. His power-pop catalog really shines on it. We talk about Rick in our The Haters Were Wrong video. Cheers! -Bruce
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment, Bruce. You have a new Subscriber to your channel. Looking forward to watching some of your stuff!
@@BruceColon-BSides Hey Bruce! I really enjoyed your Haters Were Wrong video. I'd love to join you two sometime on an R&B video, if you think it would be cool.
@@BradCarlMusic Great idea,Brad. The channel is on a temporary hiatus at the moment as we refashion a few things, but we’ll definitely keep this in mind for the future. You’d bring a lot of solid insight to the table. 👌
In 1988 when Rock Of Life came out he was going through severe Depression because he was never allowed to fully mourn the death of his father because of his hectic life at the time and Everything he kept inside and suppressed all came to the surface plus he was doubting if he was going to be a good father and then he had a ATV Accident and shattered his Shoulder so Rock Of Life Died and all touring stopped Such a Wonderful album and on Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet April 24 1981 was the first dedication to his Father Passing Away.
Good stuff, Robert. Yes, sir. I am aware of these things. I've read his auto-biography which is a gem and one of my favorite books of all time. Thank you for commenting.
@robertvance1873 His depression started in 1985. The last leg of his tour was either Lubbock or Abilene,Tx. Then came the falling out with Dana Miller ( a lot of money Rick did not receive) his 4 wheeler accident, marriage, children, turning 40. He already had severe depression and this was a pile on. He could be a shy person, and at the time, he was uncomfortable with meet and greet. I know that because I was walking with him in Austin, Tx. He was turning into a room to greet hundreds! He turned to me and said some words. I will just say the guy was exhausted.
I watched and enjoyed this video. A few things yiu either missed, didn't know about or just plained ignored. A new album was just released earlier this summer. It was shelfed for decades. Whether it was his second or third release, I don't recall at the moment. But thank you for skipping his lullaby and Christmas albums. Those are the only two I wouldn't by. BTW, when I met Billy Mumy at San Diego Comicon, he called Hard To Hold, Hard To Watch. Thanks for the great topic.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and commenting. I am glad you enjoyed this. My rankings were only for his mainstream studio albums that have always been available in America. He has a lot of other side projects but I tried to keep it simple. Hard to Hold probably shouldn't even be on this list because not all of the songs were RS. But he did have 3 Top 40 hits on it, so...
At the time you made this video, my top 2 Rick Springfield albums were also #1 Shock and #2 Oz just like you had. But now a year later, the top of my list has been shaken up: #1 Automatic, #2 Shock and #3 Oz. Automatic sounds to me like Shock Part 2, every song on it is a banger. And the fact there are 20 songs on Automatic versus the 17 songs on Shock is what makes it my favorite Rick Springfield album of them all.
I totally understand. I definitely like Automatic. It's solid and loaded with songs. But that's awesome that we were the same Top 3. I think you are the only one who has commented that agreed with mine exactly - at the time. ;)
Hi Brad. I've been a Rick fan since hearing "Speak To the Sky" in my youth (I'm 62 now). This was a terrific overview of his catalog, and we appreciate you putting this video together. Now that a few months have passed, what are your thoughts on "Automatic"? IMHO, while not as strong as some of his previous Big Albums, it's good to hear him return to basic rock and roll. By the way, I first saw Rick in concert back in 1982.
Thank you so much for the kind words and for taking the time to watch and comment! I tend to agree with you about Automatic. It's catchy and the songs are short, which is smart nowadays. He definitely experimented with instrumentation too and I think he excels when he does this - see Tao and Rock Of Life. I also like that his lyrics are not run of the mill. He knows how to write and sing about different and new things. I wish I could've seen him in 1982 back in his hey-day. That's awesome!
@@BradCarlMusic Only first 3 solo albums(Beginnings, Comic Book Heroes, and Mission Magic) by Rick Springfield in the 1970s are the best albums he ever did and will do for me. Everything else he did musically after that is not my type of music.
@@johnpolitis7929 Thank you for taking the time to comment, John. You are, of course, allowed your opinion. I must admit I have never heard one quite like yours. Best wishes!
@@BradCarlMusic I was just being honest as I really like his first three albums as they are very different than his later stuff. They have more diverse musical styles and influences and Rick is also playing more instruments than later on.
Brad, not sure if you know this, but as a musician (I am a professional musician) We CAN pull our material down from the public, off Spotify. Especially considering the low pay rate from streaming services..and the pain of the material on SDAA. If the artists own their own publishing, and has the know-how...we can pull our releases.
I guess that makes sense. If he owns the publishing on that one - and I think he does because from reading his book I recall he did everything himself. I am a musician too and have my own music on Spotify. I just assumed that all massively popular artists didn't have that kind of control - especially when you look at Taylor Swift's situation. It's all complicated. But you make a good point - and it's probably true that it's simply not out on streaming services due to the obvious reasons - painful.
Come on Misty Water Woman is a great song from Comic Book Heroes. How many Singers have wrote a song about picking up a young woman who is a Ghost, and his 1974 album has been released it was put on the shelf after the Record company went Bust, and One of his albums called The Day After Yesterday Should have been on your list.
The Day After Yesterday was all cover songs. I believe I said in the video that I was only ranking his original studio albums. Misty Water Woman IS a good song but, again...you have to remember that when doing a ranking like this SOME TITLE has to be #16. It's just my opinion. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment!
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SDAA was/is the best. Undeniably strong. The mix....the songs...the aggression...the honesty.......it's all there
I just happened across the Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance CD in the store when it came out, and I bought it because I'm a huge Rick fan. When I listened, I was blown away. Part of the reason Rocket Science was bad is because Rick was made to rock, and him doing country just felt like pandering. That said,'We Connect' is one of my absolute favorites.
My mum had the album Rock Of Life on cassette when I was a kid and I love all of the songs except the title track. So this will of course be my favourite RS album forever. It also contains my favourite RS song "Hold On To Your Dream".
I agree with your number one selection! I actually avoided listening to the Shock album because I assumed the songs were going to be “dark” just the opposite!- love the music on this album! Wasted is also my favorite! Rick was my first concert when I was 11 years old - I’ve actually seen him close to 30 times in concert! And just as recent as this past February! He puts on an amazing show
That is so awesome, Jeanne! Thank you so much for sharing and for taking the time to watch and comment. I've seen him 3 times myself. Not 30. You are a TRUE fan. His show IS always great, though. I completely agree. Stick around on my channel. There might be more RS activity in the future. :)
I should appreciate the irony 'Cause I led us both to my Gethsemane And I, I don't hate you I hate love (it's true) I held you so close I couldn't see While you had the grander view I know sometimes it's true (Jesus saves white trash, baby like you) We make what we can't undo (Jesus saves white trash, baby like you)
You nailed it! I agree with your album countdown completely. Comic Book Heroes, unfortunately, was a product of the record producers pushing him towards a teeny bopper role, which he hated. Beautiful Feelings was re-released as The Early Sound City Sessions, but using the ORIGINAL music. I tend to like this version much better than the 80's release. His SDAA album is absolutely his BEST album. I even made a remix version of the song "I Don't Want Anything From You" on my channel. I wanted to give it some kind of electronic sound, but of course the original is the best. I was just having some fun with it. So, from one fan to another, thank you for bringing light to an incredible song writer and awesome guitarist. There's much more to Rick Springfield than just "Jessie's Girl".
First of all, thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate the kind words, my friend. And also thank you for subscribing! I think the Early Sound City Sessions is better, too. I am just a tad partial to Beautiful Feelings because I owned the album in 1984. Your version of IDWAFY is so awesome! I dont have any idea how you did that but you got mad talent. And the video that goes with it is PERFECT. Thank you for your mentioning it.
I wonder what you thought was teeny bopperish about Why Are You Waiting, Mike, and I’m wondering what isn’t teeny bopperish about Beautiful Feelings. Nunce.
@@melissafincher7029 I do really SHSMY. I grew up on it. Thank you for watching and commenting. I hope you like SDAA! Feel free to stop back and let me know.
Yes, I thought I mentioned the ATV accident in the video. But if I didn't, I meant to. That must've been very disappointing to have that show canceled.
@@BradCarlMusic Oh ur welcome 🤗 I've been in love with that talented man since I was 13 years old and I'm 55 now (🤫🤫) The minute I saw his name I just had to watch 😅😁🤣
Rick Springfield is the VERY BEST ROCK STAR SINGER SINCE THE 80S OF GENERAL HOSPITAL. RICK SPRINGFIELD IS THE VERY BEST ROCK STAR SINGER. I WOULD ALWAYS SUPPORT RICK SPRINGFIELD!!!!!!
I had to come look at the comments….glad you made this video …been listening to Rick since Working Class Dog….I think Venus In Overdrive was his best work …anyways thanks again for making this 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thanks. Great ranking/ review. But nothing was mentioned about his Mission Magic! from 1974 ( The only Rick album I have). A couple of the songs mentioned were big hits for Aussie bands. State of the Heart was a hit for Mondo Rock, and I'll make you Happy was a 60's hit for the Easybeats. And regarding his love of the Beatles music he was in a very successful band here in Australia in 1970 called Zoot and did a proto Heavy Metal cover of Eleanor Rigby. It got to number one here I believe.
I love Rocket Science! Light this party Up and The Best Damn thing are awesome. I would put it in my top 5 or 6. I'll have to work on my own rankings soon. I also love Wait for Night. Lot of good songs on that one including Take a Hand which peaked at #41 just missing the top 40. You are absolutely right on Hey Maria from Karma. that is a great song and should have been a hit. Probably would have if released in the 80s. Rock of Life is a great album and never got it's just due since he didn't tour and top 40 radio was changing to R&B pop and hair metal ballads. Thanks for the video and I will put in my own rankings sometime soon.
Ah, great feedback here, too! If you know the Eagles and RS as well as I do - we should probably have been friends in High School! Definitely some great songs on Wait For Night - I agree!
Very good choices from another 40+ year fan. I totally agree that SDAA was a phenomenal album, my personnel favorite too! Though after hearing the cut "She Walks With The Angels" from the upcoming "Automatic" album, if the rest of the album comes near that song, I may have to bump SDAA to #2.
100% agree that Rick is such an underrated song writer. I'd put Venus a bit higher; not great but 4-5 great songs. Rock Of Life is an amazing album that most non-fans have never heard.
Though I understand why these albums were omitted, I think they should still be mentioned: Sahara Snow (1997), The Day After Yesterday (2005), Christmas with You (2007), My Precious Little One (2008), Stripped Down (2015). Orchestrating My Life (2019), The Red Locusts (2021) & even From the Vault (2010) - All have some nice songs only found on these albums. I have to leave my Ranking of his best albums, just as a different opinion: 1. Rocket Science - (Best Songs: "Down" - Favorite song of his, "That One", "Earth to Angel", "Crowded Solitude" , Pay it Forward" & "Found"). 2. Tao - (Best Songs: "Celebrate Youth", "State of the Heart", "Walking on the Edge", "Dance This World Away" & "Written in Rock") 3. Automatic - (Best Songs: "This Town", "Exit Wound", "She Walks with the Angels" & "Come Said the Girl") 4. Rock of Life - (Best Songs: "Honeymoon in Beruit", "Rock of Life", "World Start Turning" & "Woman") 5. Living in Oz - (Best Songs: "Human Touch", "Affair of the Heart", "Souls" & "Tiger by the Tail") 6. Karma - (Best Songs: "Beautiful Prize", "ItsAlwaysSomething", "Ordinary Girl" & "Prayer") 7. Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptence - (Best Songs: "Will I?", "Wasted", "Invisible Girl" & "Eden") Best Songs from other Albums: "Jessie's Girl" (Obviously), "You & Me", "Let Me In" (This can also be found on Rocket Science), "Don't Talk to Strangers", "Bop 'Til You Drop", "Our Ships Sinking", What's Victoria's Secret?", " I Get Excited", "Love is Alright Tonight", "One Passenger", "Kristina", "Believe in Me" & "Welcome to Your Bright New World"(Non-Album Single). Also, "Waiting for a Girl Like You" - My favorite remake version of his. My favorite Christmas Songs of his: "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "Do You Hear What I Hear?" & "Christmas with You".
Thank you for taking the time to watch and also to comment with your Top 10. I've noticed several people like Comic Book Heroes much more than I do. Nothing wrong with that!
I love those first two solo albums after Zoot. Even though you couldn't hear it as much in the songs, his Aussie accent was still as strong as ever. It would be a few more years before he perfected the American accent for his acting career. You mentioned a lot of great songs from that first album but my favorite is 1000 Years. It just really hits me in the right place. I never heard those albums growing up and I was too young to relate to the lyrics of most of those songs anyway. However that third album was right in my wheelhouse. That of course was the Mission Magic LP. I heard all those songs by watching the TV show as I was around 8 or 9 when that was on. I can see why one wouldn't take it seriously but as someone who grew up during the golden age of bubble gum music on Saturday morning cartoons, I loved the genre. Later on when Working Class Dog came out I was in high school and those songs of course I could relate to very well. I think that, combined with his meteoric rise on General Hospital, helped him go from niche material to super hit maker.
1000 Years always my favorite song on that album. I Didn't Mean To Love You is a bit stronger now. Great comments you've got here, Brad. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. I hope you'll subscribe and continue to let me know your thoughts on my videos.
@@BradCarlMusic Agreed! Never occurred to me that it was so limited, I bought the CD on release day at a local store. I remember listening to at least one track as a preview, at least some of it most be online to check out.
i’m writing this in real time as i listen to your ranking of rocket science, calling it “average,” among other things. Tell me Brad, did you make it to Earth to Angel?
I also want to know your thoughts on some other Rick related albums/projects/singles: The couple albums he did with Zoot before Beginnings Sahara Snow (new band self titled album) The Greatest Hits Alive (live album from the Karma era) The Day After Yesterday (studio album before Venus full of cover songs) Mission Magic (soundtrack and 4th album from the 70’s) Christmas With You (his Christmas album) The Red Locusts (new band self titled release from 2021) Jack Chrome and the Darkness Waltz (2021 album he collabed with Russel Morris on) Automatic (his most recent studio release) Orchestrating my Life (live orchestral concert album) Stripped Down (live album from the stripped down tour) Who Killed Rock n Roll (unreleased single meant for Venus. Contained a ton of demos and unreleased tracks Goodbye St Paul from Snake King Beautiful Inside from Rocket Science
S/A/D/A shocked me when it first came out.... It was like nothing he has ever released before. I wish the production was a little better... but it's still a strong strong album.
Totally agree and understand your point. The production is definitely a little "off" in areas. Thanks a million for watching and commenting, my friend!
@@Caseysays I was shocked to recently discover that Shock Denial Anger Acceptance is now streaming online. It's the Bonus edition, too. I need to give it a listen.
Here's my rankings and some of these i could have flipped a coin because they're so close. I will group them also. Bottom 3: 17-Comic book Heroes 16-Beginnings 15 -the Snake King-I'm not a big blues fan so this album is tough for me to like it much Decent but not that good 14-Beautiful Feelings-I made a mistake not buying this on CD when I had a chance and only have it on vinyl. Now it's out of print but is available in another version called the Early Sound City sessions and is almost identical but some different mixes. Love the song "Bruce" but version on Beautiful Feelings is better IMO. 13-Hard to Hold-Love Somebody and Don't Walk Away are great and Stand Up is pretty good. Never cared much for Bop til You Drop and only 7 RS songs on this soundtrack. 12-Automatic-too many songs, all about 3 minutes long, and I don't like the production. Sounds computer made vs real instruments. There are some good songs though and it's worth buying. Like them a lot but not my favorites 11-Wait for Night-played this a lot when released again in early 80s. Love "Take a Hand" and several other good songs like "Jessica" and "Old Gangsters Never Die" 10-Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance-a little too out of the normal RS sound for me. I have the 3 CD collectors version and it has some good tunes not on the regular disc so check that out if you're a big RS fan. "Wasted" and "Will I?" are really good and there are some others I like but only those 2 would make my "Best of RS" mix tapes The RS revival years which I really like (except S/D/A/A) 1999-2016 9-Venus in Overdrive-"Victoria's Secret" is awesome and would have been huge in the 80's. "I'll Miss that Someday and "3 Warning Shots' are good and some others also. 8-Songs for the End of World-I like this one better than "Venus" and "Our Ships Sinking" is a great rocker. The re-recorded "Lust" from the Sahara Snow sessions in the early 90's with Tim Pierce and Bob Marlette makes an appearance here and is another great RS track that general public has never heard. 7-Rocket Science-man I really like this record. Some say it sounds country but I disagree. It's just great pop-rock with hooks and melodies. "light This Party Up' severed as his live show opening tune for several years and "The Best Damn Thing" written for his wife is a very catchy tune that I listen to all the time and never get tired of it. 6-Karma-the comeback album from 1999 and it's fantastic. "hey Maria" the hidden tune Brad mentions in the video is worth the price of the CD itself. "Ordinary Girl" another one written about his wife is just perfect mid-temp catch pop. title track is also great. Buy this for sure if you don't have it. The RS prime years and some of these can be in any order but I have to rank them so here it goes. 5. Success Hasn't spoiled Me yet. Similar to Working Class Dog but not quite as good. still a great record. 4. Tao-This grew on me. It's so different in many respects to earlier music and I think the record company picked the singles wrong, especially "State of the heart" which is one of the worst songs on the album IMO. I love "Dance This World Away" and "Written in Rock" 3. Rock of Life-another change of direction for RS. "World Start Turning" and "Tear it all Down" are two of my all time favorite RS songs. "Hold on to your Dream" should be used for the Olympics or other sporting events. those three are perfect songs. Again, I think the power people picked the wrong singles, especially "Honeymoon in Beirut" as that song is way too deep for top 40 radio. It never cracked the hot 100. Rock of Life, his last top 40 single made the top 25 if I remember correctly. His voice sounds strained on his record and I was worried that he had lost something but by the time Karma arrived 11 years alter it was great again. 2. Working Class Dog-the album that made his career 1. Living in Oz-first side of this album is maybe the best album side of power pop/melodic rock anywhere. Second side is good and I like them all except :tiger by the Tail".
Look at you going to town with your rankings! Great notes here on all of them. A couple of things - I'm not sure that I have heard the Songs For The End version of "Lust" as I dont own the CD and I'm not sure that it's on any streaming versions of the album - or is it? Have you noticed that "Spanish Eyes" from Beautiful Feelings is the same riff as "Don't Talk To Strangers" but, of course, it was several years earlier? I agree, they definitely picked the wrong 2 singles from Rock of Life. Great stuff! Thank you for sharing!
@@BradCarlMusic You are absolutely correct on Spanish Eyes. I had to go back and listen to it again as it's been so long since I heard it. I found the Sahara Snow version of "Lust" on you tube and will link it here. The other song I really like on that album is "Rovianne". I think it was made in the early 90s when Rikc wasn't doing much and was not released until a few years later. Very over produced and over dubbed but it's still pretty decent. ruclips.net/video/8hN7xMIqTxI/видео.html
I can't believe you didn't like the song 3 warning Shot's from Venus In Overdrive and how Rick Shows his Disgust to the Guy Who Killed John Lennon and Saint Sahara Dedicated to the little girl who Adored him and he was saying good bye to her because she died of cancer, you really need to listen to song lyrics a lot more.
I appreciate and respect your opinion and also want to thank you for taking the time to watch. I am aware of the content of those songs and they are solid. But when grading the album as a whole compared to others, for me...it's average.
.....SIDEnote, Robert - you (AND Rick) should GET David Whelan's December 2023 book 'Mind Games'; PROVES that like SO many before him, MDC was FRAMED - by the SAME exact SOCIOPATHS.....
Sadly my ranking order would be drastically different than yours. The 70s material would be towards the top and at Number One would be MISSION MAGIC. That cartoon was my first introduction to Rick and his music. The soundtrack album is unbelievably expensive to track down on vinyl but the Japanese CD reissue and cartoon DVD set is not. The fact that Rick was able to make songs at that period that could both please bubblegum children AND hip teenagers is a miracle in itself. It's a masterpiece to me. Also missing from your list is his unreleased "hard rock" album that recently saw light of day and the Zoot albums with his involvement.
There's nothing sad about the difference in your list, George. It's all subjective, right? I'm not sure I understand what "hard rock" album you're referring to. Is this the "SPRINGFIELD" album I'm now hearing about? I'm not sure where/how to hear it.
AbsoLUTEly, George - among THE most consistently-engaging albums EVER made; may have been more focused towards a kid's audience but the music is FREQUENTLY original; unbelievably INFECTIOUS - prefer first four longplayers FAR more than the better-known Eighties stuff; knocked OVER by Shock Denial Anger Acceptance's sheer sonic DIVERSITY, Venus In Overdrive And Songs For The End Of The World NOT much LESS so - Karma's QUITE good as well.....
I am 56 and Rick Springfield has always been my favorite male artist. I was always afraid to admit that to people. I mostly agree with your list. I actually taught the hard to hold album should have been higher on the list. Like you said it had 3 hits on that album, so how can it rate lower then some other albums that didn't have any hits on them? Also the Tao album had another good song on it that I don't believe you mentioned. Dance this world away, which had a music video. Tear it all down was another great song from the Rock of life album. Just seen his new video Automatic and not really liking it.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment, Darrell. I understand your point about Hard To Hold. I guess I just never got "into" it and it shows in my ranking. My favorite song on Tao is "Written In Rock," but "Dance This World Away" is good, too. Rock Of Life has so many great songs. "Tear It All Down," "World Start Turning," "Woman." Automatic is definitely an acquired taste. RS is not scared to take chances, that's for sure.
For most of my life, I didn't realize that boys or men liked RS' music so points for that. Otherwise my rankings are going to be different than yours with Wait for Night, Hard to Hold & Comic Book Heroes all significantly higher. And Beautiful Feelings and SDAA near the bottom. It's based on which ones I listen to the most currently after decades of listening. And which ones are stuck in my head even when I don't listen to them for a long time. There are certain albums that uplift me more and others that don't like SDAA and Snake King. 1. Rock of Life 2. Success 3. WCD 4. Wait for Night 5. Karma 6. Hard to Hold 7. Tao 8. Comic Book Heroes 9. Living in Oz 10. Songs for the End of the World 11. Beginnings 12. Rocket Science 13. Venus 14. SDAA 15. Beautiful Feelings 16. Snake King
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment extensively, Jennifer. Everyone has their own opinion - music is subjective! I hear RS has a new song coming out in Oct, btw.
@@BradCarlMusicThanks for reviewing Rick's work. I learned why I don't like SDAA except for the horribly sad Angels of the Disappeared and Eden because I had forgotten the circumstances under which he wrote it. It's been a minute since I read his autobiography. Yes, it's all about which frequencies we feel drawn to. What vibes we pick up. And how closely we listen. So very subjective. I appreciate it!
Hard to hold is a movie soundtrack so I don’t think it should be counted as he probably had no choice in what other songs made it on there and his songs did well
That's a great point. If you read the comments here some people think it's his best. And then some people also think I should've have counted Beautiful Feelings because it wasn't "RS approved." In the end I included both because they were smack dab in the middle of his prime.
Wow. Comic book heroes is the one ive been listening to a lot lately. It also has Believe in me, which is one of the most evocative, sensitive songs ever. I gotta say, you dont really sound like much of a fan at all. Shock denial has some great songs (angels of the disappeared is among my faves) but he was going through something vocally that didnt sound quite like him, and that clear, sharp edge to his voice that i love so much, but it was back with songs for the end. But i think theyre all awesome.
Obviously, the rankings are subjective. Everyone is going to have their own opinion and mine certainly is not definitive. I do find it quite humorous that you say I "don't really sound like much of a fan at all." Can you explain why you'd say such a thing?
@@BradCarlMusic Well, I wrote that before I heard the WHOLE countdown, but just judging by my own opinion of Rick's music, and I do try to be as objective as I can be, but I LOVE pretty much everything he's done. He just really knows how to put a song together, movement, progressions, melody, phrasing, vocal performance, dynamics, and he has a way of infusing an emotional element into his music that is absolutely palpable. And Believe in Me, and Misty Water Woman are both on CBH, and they are two of my faves of his.
yeah i agree, but i would flip SDAA with Living in Oz...But there exist another album from i t hink 1995. It's called "Sahara Snow" - a project with Tim Pearce and Bob Malette. Maybe it's only released here in Europe. i would put it out of ur top ten:
Thank you for watching and commenting! Hard to argue with Livin' In Oz. at the top. I didn't put Sahara Snow in the this video because I wouldn't count that as an RS solo album, but it is very good. I bought an import on Amazon many many years ago. I love "Stranger In My House" and "Lust." I considered mentioning all of his other non-solo work but there is just so much of it. Have you listened to The Red Locusts and Jack Chrome?

I like the 3 singles. But as a whole I just don't feel like the balance of the album is that wonderful compared to most other albums. "Conversation" is a solid song. Hey, it's just my opinion.
We can do that! So all the way down in trash tier we have Beautiful Feelings based on cover art alone, and Comic Book Heroes because it made Rick depressed
I may have been the only person to purchase his Christmas album Christmas With You. I played the cd once and never again. It’s just so incredibly bad (and I really hate saying that).
SDAA is one of the best albums ever! Wasted is my favorite song on it too! Nice list! I might have moved Hard to Hold a little higher, but I agree with your list for the most part.
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment, Valerie! I understand what you're saying about Hard to Hold. What couple of albums would you drop down even further to move Hard to Hold up, in theory? Just curious.
@@BradCarlMusic I would drop Wait for Night and Beautiful Feelings below Hard to Hold, but maybe I need to re-listen to those two albums. They were never on my "go-to" Rick list.
@@walliegirl2 Fair enough. I can completely understand that. Just any FYI, I'll be doing more of these in the future on other artists and will probably eventually do one for RS - "Worst Song on each Studio Album." Hit that Subscribe button and ring the bell! :)
Beautiful Feelings does not count and is way worse than CBH. If you have to I guess Sahara Snow could take that spot since it was an album he was a part of unlike BF which was a misuse of his vocal stems.
In 1984 the public knew anything about the controversy of Beautiful Feelings. The album had a Top 30 single that he still plays in concert. It doesn't have to count in your book but it does in mine. Sahara Snow was not a solo project and was only released overseas.
I can agree with you except for The Snake King. Probably one of my favorite albums because it's really different , a little political and somewhat anti religion . As far as shock goes, I have the 4 faces of SDAA as a tatoo on my arm ( bad divorce )
I don't hate Snake King so I can understand why you like it so much. That's very cool that you got the tattoo. Not so cool that you had a bad divorce. Thank you for watching and commenting, Mike!
Rock Life of Life sounded too much like Sting, but a good song. Also, too much fire FX in video. Fire special FX are so yesterday and serve no purpose.- except having a Fire Depr. standing by.

Rick actually did a small club tour in the early 90’s just to get a feel of whether or not his fan base was still there. And of course, we were. I have met him three times and he is an awesome down to earth, humble human being. In my opinion, one of the greatest songwriters ever.

It was shelfed for decades.
Whether it was his second or third release, I don't recall at the moment.

Tao would have been higher on my list.
That's fair. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Walking On The Edge is his magnum
Opus
.....LISTENING repeatedly to song samples from Automatic, can SAFELY say that IT, is indeed his BEST album.....
Well I'm glad you like the samples so much. It's a good album.
I'd do a little rearranging in the top 6 or 7. but the biggest move for me would be moving Tao to first place.
And acknowledge Red Locusts.
I acknowledge them. This video was for his solo projects only.
S/A/D/A shocked me when it first came out.... It was like nothing he has ever released before. I wish the production was a little better... but it's still a strong strong album.
Totally agree and understand your point. The production is definitely a little "off" in areas. Thanks a million for watching and commenting, my friend!
I loved Venus in Overdrive. Would have been in my top 5!
@@Caseysays Fair enough! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Made go back and listen to a few of your top picks though. Some really good stuff!
@BradCarlMusic Shock Denial Anger Acceptance is absolutely stellar though. Have to agree with you on that my friend!
@@Caseysays Right on! Thank you for mentioning that!
@@Caseysays I was shocked to recently discover that Shock Denial Anger Acceptance is now streaming online. It's the Bonus edition, too. I need to give it a listen.
i like how you say “what’s victoria’s secret”
Best regards. Carlos
Thanks, Carlos!
I'll Make You Happy on SDAA is a cover song.
Favorite Rick album? Venus In Overdrive 2008!
I realize many people really like that one. It's just not my cup of tea. Do you like SDAA?
i liked getting lost in your eyes during the duration of this video Brad
You know with Venus he started writing with his bass player Matt. Some songs were really Matts
That's a good point. I can really tell there's something different about the songs on that one.
Same with Sahara Snow. You can tell Lust is the one he wrote by himself. It's the one that sounds the most like him.
@@dawndeleon3765 Yes, that song definitely sounds like him.
you know, rick actually wrote his new cut, come said the girl, about sex.
@@BradCarlMusicyea i can tell some things that are different too. it’s about SEX. and it’s better than all of the other records.
Should have included Sahara Snow Album
Technically was not a solo release and originally only available via import. But it's good. I should do a video on all of RS's side projects.
I agree with most of your picks…..but I think Rock Of Life is the absolute best album he made
Thank you for watching and commenting. Rock of Life is definitely one of his best!
do you remember where you were when eric andre beat rick springfield into a smooth paste beneath his foot?
I was Today Years Old when I saw that for the first time.
Good list.
You put Rock Of Life, Living In Oz & SDAA @the end.
I would have done the same.
In different order.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment! I'll be doing more of these in the future, some for RS and also other artists.
Top 3 in no particular order should’ve been Venus, Snake King and Songs for the End of the World
Here's my rankings and some of these i could have flipped a coin because they're so close. I will group them also.
Bottom 3:
17-Comic book Heroes
16-Beginnings
15 -the Snake King-I'm not a big blues fan so this album is tough for me to like it much
Decent but not that good
14-Beautiful Feelings-I made a mistake not buying this on CD when I had a chance and only have it on vinyl.
Like them a lot but not my favorites
11-Wait for Night-played this a lot when released again in early 80s. Love "Take a Hand" and several other good songs like "Jessica" and "Old Gangsters Never Die"
10-Shock/Denial/Anger/Acceptance-a little too out of the normal RS sound for me. I have the 3 CD collectors version and it has some good tunes not on the regular disc so check that out if you're a big RS fan. "Wasted" and "Will I?" are really good and there are some others I like but only those 2 would make my "Best of RS" mix tapes
The RS revival years which I really like (except S/D/A/A) 1999-2016
9-Venus in Overdrive-"Victoria's Secret" is awesome and would have been huge in the 80's.
I love "Dance This World Away" and "Written in Rock"
2. Working Class Dog-the album that made his career
Where's L😢iving In OZ!
Ok Where can I get Karma and four covers one . I love all the rest the of his music.
I love I'll make you Happy. Where can I get this Cd
I would like it either love Barbara .
I wouldn't like it if I was Barbara.
I love Automatic
That is absolutely true. I’ve been an RS fan for over 40 years and SDAA is by far the best album
Thank you for watching and commenting. I'm glad you enjoyed it and agree!
I love "Stranger In My House" and "Lust."
I considered mentioning all of his other non-solo work but there is just so much of it. Have you listened to The Red Locusts and Jack Chrome?
Wow so we disagree on ranking, but at least you had the guts to do it.but we agree for the most Rick makes ALOT of great music
I'm not surprised we disagree. I think everyone is going to have a different ranking. Thank you for watching and commenting! I'll have more videos like these in the near future for RS and other artists. I expect to do a Worst Song on each RS Album soon. Feel free to subscribe!

The new album Automatic, is good 🌸✌️🎸
I would agree with that.

Rick Springfield v David Carradine =Karate v Kung fu. The fight choreography was on par with a Three Stooges fight scene. In the end, Rick won!
Makes complete sense to me.
what Hard to hold??? great Lost of art of conversation is a great song and album and RIck wrote the graham parson " when the lights go down"!!!!
I like the 3 singles. But as a whole I just don't feel like the balance of the album is that wonderful compared to most other albums. "Conversation" is a solid song. Hey, it's just my opinion.
That's what is great about the content gets people talking !!!@@BradCarlMusic

I may have been the only person to purchase his Christmas album Christmas With You. I played the cd once and never again. It’s just so incredibly bad (and I really hate saying that).
That's too bad - at least you're honest about it. I was never much of a fan of that covers album he did either. I tried, though.

Automatic.

In what universe is Beginnings better than anything since the year 2000
In the Bradiverse.

That's hilarious. But you make a good point. I never thought of ROL as sounding like Sting. Interesting thought....
