I am most fond of the traditional one with almond paste and wjpped cream. My favourite way to eat a "Semla" is to eat it when it lies in a bowl with some slightly warmed milk. 😋 Have a nice time!
My 3 favorite fika treats are: Semla, Napoleonbakelse and Lussekatt(sad that this is only for christmas, I loooooove Lussekatter). The way you eat your Semla is up to you, but i eat the top first with some of the whipped cream..and the rest of it, like a cinnamonbun.
mmmm lussekatter are tasty too Linda, I can agree with you there!! and I think one of the reasons we crave it so much is the same with the semla - that you cant just go out and get it anytime in the year - its the anticipation which makes it taste even better!

Sometimes I eat the semla as it is and sometimes I put the semla in a bowl with hot milk. Called ”hetvägg”. Hot Wall. 😊 I love both ways. 😍 It has to be with the traditional filling, almond mass. 👍
My late sister Nancy loved Fika! She lived with her husband and children for 6 years and then they went back for 6 more summers afterwards - it was her favorite place in the world! She is the reason I grew to love Sweden so much! "Fat Tuesday"??? This is new to me! (; Now I am hungry for Semla and there is nowhere to get it! (;

Semla is my favorite no1... I use to take off the lid and use it to take off whipped cream. When I have eaten the lid and there still too much whipped cream I take off a bit of the bun and do the same like I did with the lid. Next I eat around the part of mandelmassa. Cause I save it for the last, it's the best part for sure!

Have tried different versions, that are tasty in their own ways, but it's classic semla for me; almond paste and whipped cream^^ I eat the lid first with some of the cream and then dig into the rest.
In Gothenburg, there is a bakery that does a cinnamonbunsemla called kremla. The queue goes down an entire street, and they usually sell out in 3 hours!
I think it might be because I'm a mid-eighties kid, but for me, semla is inseparable from the children's book and julkalender character Ture Sventon, created in the late 1940s by Åke Holmberg. I grew up with the 1970s movie starring Jarl Kulle and the julkalender from 1989 starring Helge Skoog. All the semlor in those stories... always left hungry.
Very nice video about our National Treasure the Semla. Really liked the historical view of it. I'm either 3 months late or 9 months early but are you still interested in a christmas tradition that is almost lost? The "advents-verserna" you read out loud for every candle you lit every sunday in advent.

I personally prefer semlegrodor. In those, the almond paste and the cream is mixed. The bun is not cut in half, instead there is a "mouth" were the cream is added. So good.
You can eat the Semla dry with a cup of coffee, dry with a glass of milk, in a bowl with cold milk, or in a bowl with warm milk, whichever way you like.

haha I had actually planned to go around and taste some different semlor and try and find the best one in my area, but then I thought that video might get a bit long... and I might end up in the same situation as that king I mentioned😅
Fastlagsbulle, absolutely one of the best fika one can have. And obviously the proper way to eat it is 1) lid with a bit of the cream, 2) the rest of the cream scooped on top of your coffee, and then 3) the bottom like the most decadent sandwich in existence. Also, the variability is amazing. I love the almonds, but it is just as traditional to fill it with jams (which with modern trade, you can update to fresh berries if you want) which means it's good to go for people with nut allergies too. And lastly, don't slam a Slät Bulle. Arguably the best fika outside of the fastlagsbulle season - cardamon, not too sweet, fantastic texture, can double as a sandwich bread in a pinch...
Mine favorit place for fika in Örebro is fröken brogrens (fröken brogrens veranda) it has mini semlas buffe some days in the week and it is just perfect when one can not decide for what flavor to eat. They have tiny mini semlas with vanilla cream instead of almond mass. Many fika places offer it as a alternativ if you like semla but cant eat it because of the almond mass for diffrent reasons. And so the hard part. One have to decide what kind of cream under the semla hat. Pear whipped cream, or blueberry whipped cream, nutella whipped cream, dulce de leche whipped cream or normal semla with normal filling almond mass and regular whipped cream. When I was young I grow up with the tradition to put the normal semla with almond mass and whipped cream in a soup bowl and poor hot milk around it. Just a few centimeter or almost half of the bigger bund of the semla is cover. And sprinkle a little blended mix with cinnamon and a little sugar on top it all. And eat with big spoon. It´s so good. Perfect when it's cold outside.
oooh I've not been to Örebro in a couple of years, but next time I'm in town, I'll definitely be trying your recommendation!! and you're totally right about the benefits of a mini semla - all the good parts of the semla experience, but in a bitesized chunk! I'm yet to try the hetvägg semla but now I've read so many of you mention it, that I REALLY want to try haha
Nothing wrong with kanelbullar, wienerbröd, or indeed semlor. However, although perhaps less known among foreigners, prinsesstårta, budapestbakelse, napoleonbakelse, and similar pastries, are among the best kinds of kaffebröd (imho). Along with chokladbiskvier, studentskor, kladdkaka, and crispy berry pies with whipped cream.
You have to try semla in a different way that I like. It is called "hot wall" you take a deep bowl with some warm / hot milk And put it in the bowl then you eat with a spoon.
The best ones are the ones you make yourself. I'm not a fan of hard whipped cream, I like it more liquid-y and more almond paste. However, this year I'm thinking of making one with blueberry jam. Because blueberries are the best berry.
I haven't eaten semla for many years, I don't know how many years, bust been at least for over 5 years. Main reason is I'm celiac and despite Sweden is really good place to find glutenfree alternatives, I haven't really looked for glutenfree semla or bothered try do it myself or bothered to 'cheat' and still eat gluten. Though I'd assume if going to a fika place outdoors where they sell fika, around the semla times now some must probably have glutenfree ones hmm
take off the lid and scoop a little whipped cream on it, and put it aside, then eat the bun with the almondpast and the rest of the cream, and lastly the lid.
My favorite innovation on the traditional semla is the weinersemla. Also, the correct way to eat semla is to take a big bite and try your best and fail at not smearing cream and powdered sugar on your face. Yes, I am 100% serious. The mess is an important part of it.
I actually already have Marianne! I left the link in the description section :) but maybe I'll have to do an updated version sometime hehe, what's your favourite fika?
@@JustaBritAbroad Yes, I so have some favorites but you do not see them very often in the cafées. Sommartårta or Pinocchio tårta is very good. Gilles with strawberries or blueberries. Haha today I was walking them streets of Stockholm and I was surprised by the ammount of Semla I saw for sale :D thanks for explaining this! Which kind of semla would you recomment?
Rub it in my face, won't you!!! (Actually, I'll take a semla any way!) I can't get them here in the US, and home-baked just isn't the same without a pressure oven to make them fluffy-yet-doughy.
Best way here: join the local eating contest! wolf down as many as you can and only have to pay the entry fee 😅 sure, you will feel sick for the rest of the month, but at least you will not have a sweet tooth for quite some time hahah
When I moved to the east of Sweden I was very "shocked" by how they made the "Fettisdagsbulle" with the whipped cream and the almond paste separated. Where I was raised in the west of Sweden the cream and the almond paste was always mixed together before it was put on/in the bun. And the lid was round never triangular. Blasphemy indeed! 😎 And to top it off they called it "SEMLA" ARRRGHH!
You are completely right in that the lid should be round. BUT. Then one makes a hole in the middle of the bottom bun, mix the bread one took out with the almond paste, put cream on top and then put the lid on top of it all. :)
Apparently there are fastlagsbullar with cream in our neighbouring countries as well, following this pattern of filling: Finnish speaking in Finland: 56-77% prefer jam (mostly younger people), 23-44% prefer almond paste (elder people) Swedish speaking in Finland: 25% prefer jam, 75% prefer almond paste Sweden: almond paste or sometimes vanilla cream (not sure if there ever was a survey) Norway: jam The tradition to eat the bun in hot milk seems to be purely Swedish though. Exactly why there is the divide between Swedish speaking and Finnish speaking in Finland is unclear. Some point to that it might have been difficult and expensive to obtain almonds after WW2, and thus in Finland which probably was more affected by the war, they substituted almond paste with jam. Another explanation is that before during the lent they ate jam filled donuts in Finland, and through that way the jam has moved from the donut to the bun, replacing the almond paste. However it is also said that a lot of recipes in Swedish use almond paste regardless of its price or availability, so perhaps it simply is what makes Sweden Swedish?
Are you aware this had been copied from the Italian " maritozzo", which is also the worst cake you can find in Italy? Maritozzo comes from the ancient Rome, Semla came out in the 16th century.
You forgot to mention that a normal size semla is too big to just bite in to. If you try you'll get whipped cream everywhere. (I think everybody has tried this at least once as a child.) My preferred method: Take off the lid. Turn it upside down over the whipped cream, so the excess powdered sugar falls on the cream. Use the lid to scoop up cream and take bites of it until the whole semla has become low enough for you to be able to bite into it. Then pick up the bun and bite into it as you would any bun. After you've finished eating, don't forget to wipe off the whipped cream that always ends up on the tip of your nose.
haha good point Karin!! that's kind of why I didn't try to just bite into the whole thing when I held it up in the video😅 that would have become a meme in minutes haha. I've never heard of turning it upside down though🤔 cool!! might have to give it a try sometimes!
Norwegian "fika" ; Sitting on a mountain top. Or by a forest lake. Happily munching a "Kvikklunch"... (Norwegian improved "KitKat"). Hoping for some peace and quiet. ⛰️😋🍫🌲🫎 (Yes. We're introverts. When sober...)

Mandelmassa for Semla filling can be made from equal amounts (by weight) of almonds and sugar in a blender, add a splash of water if needed.

The traditional one or the one that looks traditional but filled with vanilla cream instead. Or both.😋
great channel
Sigh... Here I was doing pretty well on my diet, and then you have to go and tempt me with this... Dammit! :P
I eat it in a bowl of warm milk its called A” Het Vägg” 🤣
No milk. Eat lid first, then the rest with a teaspoon. That's the way I eat it. ;)
I second this Robert! this is my style👌
Jag älskar Semlor. Bland det bästa som finns.
jag håller med dig helt och hållet🤩🤩
Rub it in my face, won't you!!! (Actually, I'll take a semla any way!) I can't get them here in the US, and home-baked just isn't the same without a pressure oven to make them fluffy-yet-doughy.
Semlas are one of the best treats ever! However, I would say prinsesstårta is slightly better ;)
oooh its certainly very tight!! ;)
Yes I think so too
Best way here: join the local eating contest! wolf down as many as you can and only have to pay the entry fee 😅 sure, you will feel sick for the rest of the month, but at least you will not have a sweet tooth for quite some time hahah
"And the lid was round never triangular."
@@dennisbohman3848 I think it might depend on what part of the country you grew up in.
Per likes this one a lot. He had Semla the other day. No coffee though of course hahaha
semla is seriously the best! have you tried it yet? ;)
Lid first :)
agreed Cat!!
yummy
Instead of hot milk, use hot chocolate, it'll change your life.😊
Wienersemla is the best one I have tried.
yum!!!
I never really liked "mandelmassa" (or almonds in any shape), but I can put up with it for a semla or two.😊
you didn't?😱perhaps I gave away in this video that the madelmassa might actually be my favourite part hahaha
you can put whatever you want in the bottom half if you dont like "mandel massa" jam works fine or any other berryjam you like!
Apparently there are fastlagsbullar with cream in our neighbouring countries as well, following this pattern of filling:
Finnish speaking in Finland: 56-77% prefer jam (mostly younger people), 23-44% prefer almond paste (elder people)
Swedish speaking in Finland: 25% prefer jam, 75% prefer almond paste
Sweden: almond paste or sometimes vanilla cream (not sure if there ever was a survey)
Norway: jam
The tradition to eat the bun in hot milk seems to be purely Swedish though.
However it is also said that a lot of recipes in Swedish use almond paste regardless of its price or availability, so perhaps it simply is what makes Sweden Swedish?
good tip!!
(I think everybody has tried this at least once as a child.)
My preferred method: Take off the lid.
Semla= Bagarens guld 😉
ja men verkligen hahaha
There's a semla-latte! just saying....
forehead?
Kladdkaka is much better
mmmm I love that too Stefan!! The Swedes just have too many great fikas😱😅
My favourite fika treat!! 💪 On 2:nd place, my homemade applepie, "smulpaj".
Norwegian "fika" ;
Sitting on a mountain top.
Or by a forest lake.
Happily munching a "Kvikklunch"...
(Norwegian improved "KitKat").
Hoping for some peace and quiet.
