Denmark and Sweden holds the record for the most wars fought between just two countries. The length of Sweden means there is a difference in the amount of daylight the country gets over a year. With the north experiencing the biggest differences between winter and summer, while the south experience the smallest difference. The Old Norse of Sweden were mostly traders and mercenaries rather than raiders. They also went east while the Danish and Norwegian groups went west. There are more than 4000 runestones in Sweden that are still more or less intact. The biggest number of runestones in one area is found in Uppland, which amount to over 1300 runestones. Same area used to be a very important seat of power and religious importance. Uppsala and Västerås used to be called East Aros and West Aros. Aros was the old name of Mälaren.

I'm new to the channel and I've have watched a couple of your videos already but I did not find any "vlog" type of content (at least in the, last past months) and thought it would be refreshing to see you speak to us in a different environment, in a different type of video. Perhaps visiting some cool places of your neighborhood could be fun. Maybe also show us how working is like in Sweden during a "day in my life" video. I understand you may not want people to invade your privacy but perhaps a video with small clips of you and your friends enjoying yourselves would be nice as well. Sweden seems like a place that's vastly different from what Europeans and Americans live, so may be you could exploit its peculiarities to show us what it feels like to be a swede from a real life perspective. I'd imagine you walking us home during a dark day in Sweden, sometimes recording beautiful landscapes or sharing funny-looking buildings or typical Swedish food / places (cafe, restaurants, drugstores,...). I know you rely much on pictures and video clips on your channel, that's why I thought it'd be a nice addition to what you're already doing. Feel free to correct me if I made any mistake concerning you or your channel. Also this may have sounded a bit foulhardy, but this really is coming from a fan. Sorry, but I knew most of these, including that the Volvo invention was really the 3-point seatbelt, which is standard today. I could not have put an exact number to the moose population but I know it roughly. So, what facts can I give you...? 1) Sweden has around 125.000 lakes, more than Finland which is normally known for its many lakes. 2) Sweden is roughly on the same latitudes as Alaska. US citizens at least very rarely have an idea about this. 3) The second university of Sweden was founded 1632 in what today is Tartu, Estonia. The area was Swedish at the time, before the Russian juggernaut started rolling west. 4) For centuries the scolars were puzzled about why the water was disappering along the coast, in particular in the north. They did not realise that it is the land that is rising but thought that the sea somehow withdrew. 5) From around the 10th century until 1544 Swedish kings were elected. In the old laws this was expressed as "Svear äga konung att taga och så vräka". It was Gustav Eriksson Vasa who changed the law so the crown would automatically be inherited by his son. Was any of this new?

Hunting used to be mostly reserved for the nobility. In fact, In some parts of Sweden (in and near some royal game parks), people were required to cut off one leg from their dogs, just so they wouldn't be useful for hunting. Gustav III legalized hunting for everyone, and after that it was a matter of years before both the moose and the roe deer, and possibly some other animals, were almost extinct. Not sure if that was when the forest reindeer went extinct in Sweden, but it might have contributed to it.

Combine that with allemansrätten, and you end up with one of the countries where you have the greatest possibilities to spend a night on an uninhabited island, or spend 10 consecutive nights on 10 different uninhabited islands. 🙂
"Sill" is north sea herring, but baltic herring is called "Strömming". It's the same species, but one is (allegedly) fatter and they are used for different things.
I knew these so I can add that when Sweden was populated the south was populated from the rest of Europe while the north was populated from Finland and Russia and Russia in turn was populated from Asia and I didn't find this out until I did a DNA test and found Asian trace DNA from Korea and started digging how in the world that was possible. Another thing most Swedes may not know is that Swedish has 2 tones and pitch accent just like Japanese. I think only people studying Swedish discover that but we never learn this in School so it blew my mind honestly.

Pitch accent means that where you put the emphasis in a higher or lower tone determines what the word means. In Japanese Hoshi means to different things depending on if you say it as hoSHI or HOshi and Swedish has this too, TOMten and TomTen changes the meaning and it goes for many other words too. Pitch determines meaning of the word.
This, is true only because the Swedish definition of an island is very loose compared to other countries. A single rock of the coast or in the middle of a lake is considered an island in the statistics if I remember correctly.
Safety is a big issue in Sweden! Did you know that in Sweden it's recomended to keep the children traveling revearse in cars until they are at least four years old, and that statistics shows that Swedish children are least likely to be injured or killed in car accidents?

Swedes often think about safety first. This is why Swedes first learn to swim breaststroke, while most all other countries crawl. Breaststroke is needed to be able to save lives. The famine you mentioned .... 1867 it was really bad in northern Sweden after several years of mixed growth and snow in the middle of summer. It was not only the moose that were shot but it is reported that no magpie was to be seen. Everything that could be eaten was eaten. Large fundraisers and support galas were held in southern Sweden and even England. But here's the interesting thing .... the government thought that people would get lazy if they got something without working for it, so most went as loans to rich farmers who could prove that they could pay it back, others had to work for that with, among other things, the railway. Only 10% was given as alms to those who were estimated not to be able to work, but they also had to pay with cleaned spruce lichen wich then was mixed with a third of flour. People just got sick from that bread. Should we guess that this has contributed to northern Sweden voting red today?

We don't only have some Moose around here, but 17% of Sweden is covered in lingonberries. Guess why IKEA serve Lingonberry jam to every meatball? ... and oh... about as much of the country is covered in blueberries... no, the tasty, wild Swedish kind, not the watery domesticated ones. Another lesser known fact is that the entire naming system of flora and fauna were invented by a Swede, Carolus Linnaeus (Carl von Linné) and that there's a religious movement inspired by the religious philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg that still exists - mainly in the US. ... and John Ericsson that built the Monitor (of battle of Hampton Roades fame) was Swedish, and his brother Nils was the engineer that built the Swedish railway system.

Not really sure about this one, but I believe the inventor of the plastic bag was a Swede too. If I remember correctly he never really meant it to be a single use thing. He always reused his bags and always had one with him. You have to check this one up though! :)

@@JustaBritAbroad There is a reason why hunters shoot moose in september every year. And there is a reason for the fences you see along most of the big roads in Sweden. Last year there were more than 5000 accidents with moose and about 300 were fatal. If you want to see moose up close, there are moose farms in many places where you can visit them. The moose warnings along the roads are not souvenirs. 🙂

Because I was only half aware of your examples, which are very entertaining, here some other snippets about Sweden: 1) there are many "traditions" that aren't even 200 years old, and not especially Swedish, especially around Xmas, but we commonly believe firmly in them, then we have some real traditions, though we don't know their origin - like why we say "jul-klappar" - what "klappar"!!! 2) Most of the population in Viking-times were unfree slaves (trälar), so those are our common ancestors. 3) Sweden's first female Prime Minister was not elected until in 2021. 4) Sweden has almost no natural old growth forests left, the country is transformed into tree plantations, which we protest against in other countries. 5) We still have, though not Catholic, a name-day calendar. We have some sayings and some kind of traditions that refer to name-days - Tjugond' dag Knut bäres julen ut, Valborg, fruntimmersveckan, Mårten gås, Anders braskar och julen slaskar, come to mind. Most of our names are of foreign origin, a bit adapted as it might be.
I knew fact 1 and 5 so here are my facts. 1. During world war 2 Sweden may have been "neutral" as we didn't fight on any side but Sweden did export tonnes of iron to germany which they needed for the war. 2. During the cold war Sweden at one point had the 4th biggest airforce in the world.

Hehum.... We dont have moose , we have European elk ( A. a. alces). Mooses are American and Elks are euro-asian. There tiny genetic differences and also American populations is heavier and larger.

I spend a lot of time down in Småland and I've still never seen one, not to mention I've been up to Höga Kusten and Umeå! I think I've just been unlucky😆 but you're right, the daylight in the summer is mad! I was in Norrland last summer and wowww the days were so nice and long🤩🤩

"Sill" is north sea herring, but baltic herring is called "Strömming". It's the same species, but one is (allegedly) fatter and they are used for different things.
Sweden transplanted into the US very nearly touches Canada and Mexico. Not quite but almost.
I knew these so I can add that when Sweden was populated the south was populated from the rest of Europe while the north was populated from Finland and Russia and Russia in turn was populated from Asia and I didn't find this out until I did a DNA test and found Asian trace DNA from Korea and started digging how in the world that was possible. Another thing most Swedes may not know is that Swedish has 2 tones and pitch accent just like Japanese. I think only people studying Swedish discover that but we never learn this in School so it blew my mind honestly.

Swedish has tons of different accents. Not just two. So do Japanese. Each region has distinct differences.
oooh interesting fact Ambi, thanks for sharing! you're right, when you learn the language as a foreigner, you learn about the different tones and how pitch plays into pronunciation, but its interesting how its not a feature of the education for natives!
I think Ambi means two different tones and that its a pitch-based language, not that the accent is shared across the country :)
@@Ikajo Accent as in dialect and pitch accent are two different things, the term is called pitch accent. Pitch accent means that where you put the emphasis in a higher or lower tone determines what the word means. In Japanese Hoshi means to different things depending on if you say it as hoSHI or HOshi and Swedish has this too, TOMten and TomTen changes the meaning and it goes for many other words too. Pitch determines meaning of the word.

This, is true only because the Swedish definition of an island is very loose compared to other countries. A single rock of the coast or in the middle of a lake is considered an island in the statistics if I remember correctly.
Safety is a big issue in Sweden! Did you know that in Sweden it's recomended to keep the children traveling revearse in cars until they are at least four years old, and that statistics shows that Swedish children are least likely to be injured or killed in car accidents?

The current Swedish Royal Dynasty was imported from France. A famous French marshal and general, under Napoleon I, took some Swedish soldiers captive in Lubeck 1806. And treated them nice. Soon after, when the Swedes were looking for a new King, he was persuaded to take the job. Bernadotte. It has now been the most longlived Royal Dynasty in Swedish history.

1) Did You know that Swedish Television (Sveriges Television) has an archive that is one of the most extensive tv/film archives in the world? They have stored *every* Swedish tv-program since 1979. They started to store some programs earlier in the 60's and 70's but due to high costs of the tapes they couldn't store everything. This changed in 1979.
2) The Swedish royal family is actually descendants from a French officer... Jean Baptiste Bernadotte was elected King at 1810 in Örebro and he never learned to speak Swedish...
3) The lowest recorded temperature in Sweden is -52,6 C and it was recorded in Lappland, February 2nd 1966.
4) Sweden doesn't have an official national anthem... Yes. We sing "Du gamla, du fria" but it has never been officially noted as a national anthem. We sing that song purely based on tradition...

Swedes often think about safety first. This is why Swedes first learn to swim breaststroke, while most all other countries crawl. Breaststroke is needed to be able to save lives.
The famine you mentioned .... 1867 it was really bad in northern Sweden after several years of mixed growth and snow in the middle of summer. It was not only the moose that were shot but it is reported that no magpie was to be seen. Everything that could be eaten was eaten. Large fundraisers and support galas were held in southern Sweden and even England. But here's the interesting thing .... the government thought that people would get lazy if they got something without working for it, so most went as loans to rich farmers who could prove that they could pay it back, others had to work for that with, among other things, the railway. Only 10% was given as alms to those who were estimated not to be able to work, but they also had to pay with cleaned spruce lichen wich then was mixed with a third of flour. People just got sick from that bread. Should we guess that this has contributed to northern Sweden voting red today?

We don't only have some Moose around here, but 17% of Sweden is covered in lingonberries. Guess why IKEA serve Lingonberry jam to every meatball? ... and oh... about as much of the country is covered in blueberries... no, the tasty, wild Swedish kind, not the watery domesticated ones.
Another lesser known fact is that the entire naming system of flora and fauna were invented by a Swede, Carolus Linnaeus (Carl von Linné) and that there's a religious movement inspired by the religious philosopher Emanuel Swedenborg that still exists - mainly in the US.
... and John Ericsson that built the Monitor (of battle of Hampton Roades fame) was Swedish, and his brother Nils was the engineer that built the Swedish railway system.

Alright I already knew 4 of these, the amount of choirs was new.
So let's see if I can give you 4 new ones.
1. Moose consist 50% of poop, a friend of mine hit on with his truck, and the entire windshield went black from poop.
2. Sweden used to be double the size, including, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Vorpommern, Karelia, Ingria & more.
3. The King of Sweden has a license to kill; Any one! for no particular reason.
4. Sweden now pays the highest taxes on labour in the world.
Not really sure about this one, but I believe the inventor of the plastic bag was a Swede too. If I remember correctly he never really meant it to be a single use thing. He always reused his bags and always had one with him. You have to check this one up though! :)
Think you got the number of moose wrong. 25 moose for every Swede would be 250 million moose! :-)

@@JustaBritAbroad There is a reason why hunters shoot moose in september every year. And there is a reason for the fences you see along most of the big roads in Sweden. Last year there were more than 5000 accidents with moose and about 300 were fatal. If you want to see moose up close, there are moose farms in many places where you can visit them. The moose warnings along the roads are not souvenirs. 🙂

Because I was only half aware of your examples, which are very entertaining, here some other snippets about Sweden:
1) there are many "traditions" that aren't even 200 years old, and not especially Swedish, especially around Xmas, but we commonly believe firmly in them, then we have some real traditions, though we don't know their origin - like why we say "jul-klappar" - what "klappar"!!!
2) Most of the population in Viking-times were unfree slaves (trälar), so those are our common ancestors.
3) Sweden's first female Prime Minister was not elected until in 2021.
4) Sweden has almost no natural old growth forests left, the country is transformed into tree plantations, which we protest against in other countries.
5) We still have, though not Catholic, a name-day calendar. We have some sayings and some kind of traditions that refer to name-days - Tjugond' dag Knut bäres julen ut, Valborg, fruntimmersveckan, Mårten gås, Anders braskar och julen slaskar, come to mind. Most of our names are of foreign origin, a bit adapted as it might be.
I knew fact 1 and 5 so here are my facts.
1.
During world war 2 Sweden may have been "neutral" as we didn't fight on any side but Sweden did export tonnes of iron to germany which they needed for the war.
2.
During the cold war Sweden at one point had the 4th biggest airforce in the world.
The 4th largest huh? I never knew that!!
We also eat bear meat here in Sweden. I only know that because because i happened to spot bear meat at a local place that happened to sell it. It might not be a fact from this video, but it's still a fact

That car accident numbers makes the moose the deadliest animals in Sweden... .. but the most dangerous is the Wasp. That is because moose seldom kills you close up and personal when you're out of your car - unlike the wasp.
To be honest, All these facts are kind of basic swede knowledge so I think everyone knows it, But still interesting for people from other countries maybe :)

European elk ( A. a. alces). Mooses are American and Elks are euro-asian. There tiny genetic differences and also American populations is heavier and larger.

You said it yourself.. it's a (relatively) large country! ;) The winter up here in the north is nothing like that of the south.. nor are the summers. You may think you have a lot of daylight in sthlm in the summer. Well... No. Not comparatively. ;) Get adventuring, lad!
haha Ricke, I've actually only been to Stockholm 3 times😆 in fact, I dont live in any of the 5 largest cities in Sweden! I spend a lot of time down in Småland and I've still never seen one, not to mention I've been up to Höga Kusten and Umeå! I think I've just been unlucky😆 but you're right, the daylight in the summer is mad! I was in Norrland last summer and wowww the days were so nice and long🤩🤩
