Precision is queen here and I appreciate your precise explanations and methods of measuring/cutting/sewing. These leader cloths will definitely keep the quilt straight and the quilting better aligned on the top. Thank you for the helpful information!
Thank you. I will be following you extensively as you are very informative and helpful and I am 65 and learning how to do all of this and I feel like I can do it after I watch your videos.
Thank you for the instructions - beginning was hard to hear but sound got much better as video went on. You have been a great help as I get my Cutie frame set up and now will be making the leader cloths. You are an awesome teacher!
Ok. with your help I just finished making my leader cloths. Thank you! Thank you! Very clear instructions for us to follow. Now on the the video on how to use them.
Thanks for the helpful video! I saw the leader cloths at the quilt store and had definite sticker shock. Remembered you made a video on them and gave it a watch today!
I try to be frugal...thus "Quilting on a Thread" is s play on "hanging on by a string"...a phrase my mom used all the time to explain why we didn't or couldn't have something. (We could..., if we weren't hanging on by a string.)
You're genius, I'm thrilled I found you and yes I definitely subscribed and marked all for notifications, WOOHOO... Been thinking about a cutie frame for a long time. Out of my budget but I'm still learning so when I do get one, I'm ready. I found you through Amazon while price comparing. I'm so thankful because you've removed the fear factor with all your tips n tricks. That's priceless and a humongous blessing. Thank you
Wow! I'm happy my videos are helping! When I bought my Cutie in 2021, I fell quickly in love with the frame. I've had 3 machines on the frame and each one has been wonderful. I do try to show how easy it can be...apparently it's working. 😉
@chickad5820. what a good video, thank you!!! I have just bought my cutie tabletop...it's set up...and leadercloths are my next project. And no, I won't be buying them 🙂 And the math.....it's ALWAYS the math!!!!! 🙂
Thank for responding. I think I'm going try your method for making leader cloths. It seems cost effective. You are my new she'ro. I've already watched several of your videos. I recently realized that I first saw you on a SMP episode. That's awesome. I've subscribed to your channel. I will eagerly await your future videos. Thank you for sending me this link from Facebook.
The leader cloth (or the quilt body) will attach to different frames according to the frame. For hooping frames, clip the leader of body onto the frame rail, using the blue clips provided with the frames. For rolling frames, the leaders (you'll always use leaders) attach using Velcro or thin pipes that secure into the rails in the slot in the rail. The attachment medium (Velcro or pipes) is usually supplied with the frame based on the rail type.
If I’m quilting a king sized quilt on the cutie what size leader cloth would I need? I didn’t quit get the name of the material you used? Great video. ❤
Do you ever take your leader cloths off after you get several rows down your quilt top…I saw someone do this and she says it alleviated some of the bulk in her quilt under the top clips.
Just curious, did you find that the 12 inch leader cloth that you made originally was inadequate? I’m thinking 16 might be too deep. What are your thoughts ?
I am new to quilting on a cutie and am putting my hoop together now. I want to make my leader cloths and your video was so clear. I have one question though, you used painters cloth. So is this a fabric you can buy by the yard or is it painters drop cloth.
The first set was made from a clean drop cloth we had around the house. I don't recall where we bought it, but you would want a sturdy cotton drop cloth. It's not something I know about whether it's sold by the yard...my husband purchased it years ago. The set I had in the video was made from ticking cloth, easily available by the yard. You just want a sturdy, medium-weight cotton that will not stretch (broadcloth, heavy ticking, cotton upholstry etc.).
I mark the center and every 4" on each side to assist in centering my quilts as they are attached to the leader cloth. These markings then are used to center the leader cloth and quilt as I am hooping into the frame.
Would you recommend adding the cording for the top and bottom leaders? I’m making my first set and starting with the big size (12’) Does it help a lot or add too much bulk? Thanks for the helpful advice and demonstration in your video!
Some people like the cords others do not. My 11ft long set have the cords in permanently. My 4ft long set has a cord that I can put in or take out as needed. The cords make rolling a larger piece easier for me. I recommend bring able to add a cord, if you need it...versatility.
Bonnie can you tell me about your Side leader cloths. I know you said your Grace leaders had a side leader cloth. What size (width & length) are they ? TIA 😊
So glad to learn from you. Now to start using my cutie and Qnique.

@@gelyse71 Thank YOU. I taught sewing and quilting for many years, so these videos are a bit of an extension to that.

WOW! Thank you so much for this tutorial. I'm going to make my own leaders for my new cutie breeze frame and your helpful directions are perfect.

Thank you for another informative video. What about the cording? When and how is that used?
Have you watched the companion video to this one? The cording is inserted into the top edge of the top leader cloth and helps to firm a tighter roll.
The selvage goes along length of table?
If you want more than 42 - 45" wide sew pieces together with feld seam.
If I’m quilting a king sized quilt on the cutie what size leader cloth would I need? I didn’t quit get the name of the material you used? Great video. ❤
I use an 11ft long set of leaders for my King sized quilts.
I used a bit of ticking cloth, which is a sturdy cotton, to make my leaders.
@@quiltingonathread thank you!

Yes...if there is too much bulk, I would definitely do that.
Just curious, did you find that the 12 inch leader cloth that you made originally was inadequate? I’m thinking 16 might be too deep. What are your thoughts ?
@@rosalielongo589 12" is usually sufficient.

Bonnie could you say where you got your ticking and what type fabric it is and amount of yardage you purchased. Thanks
This was from my stash. I just used 4.5' length of a 44" wide ticking cloth.
Thank you
I don’t understand where you buy the fabric from?
@@Letsbhonest0828 I bought the ticking fabric for this set and the broadcloth for another set at Hobby Lobby.
Bonnie can you tell me about your Side leader cloths. I know you said your Grace leaders had a side leader cloth. What size (width & length) are they ? TIA 😊
I don't use the side leader cloths and no one I know uses the side leaders...we simply use strips of cloth if needed.
What's the purpose for marking every 4"?
To help me center my quilt sandwich as I attach it to the leader cloths.
Thank you. I’m still trying to visualize it.
