I went to Myanmar in 2016. I was 21 years old and was there filming a video for this scammy MLM I worked for. I genuinely had no idea what I had gotten myself into. It was the first country I’d been to outside of the US and Canada. We had a light kit and a bunch of camera gear and we were hounded by customs for a good 30 minutes while they asked us all these questions and made us wait for who knows what reason. We had a guide that was giving us the rundown of all of the rules and how not to break the law and I very quickly became anxious. The trip ended up going super smooth and we had no issues, but I saw things that blew my mind. I couldn’t believe the poverty and the corruption in that country. If I knew what I know now about Myanmar, there’s zero way I would have agreed to go on that trip.
As a Wildlife Biologist currently living and woking in the forests of Southeast Asia, this is so understandable. You've got to be so careful when dealing with the authorities out here.

Weird that they threatened death to the guy if he helped you escape but then let him go after 24 hours of “soft torture” because they fired the guy from the airport…they still had the video evidence of you smuggling a drone into the country, and they know you left the country via plane, so why would they just let the guy go?
Because the guide wasn’t the one that committed the alleged crime and they had no evidence of it along with no drone. I’m sure they would’ve tried to make a case if they could detain the crew but they were long gone. This story was insane Forrest, would love to hear more

The issue started 12 hours before they boarded the plane with this other story breaking and they didn't know the law was changed as they were leaving the country to head there. In the story he mentions that they get off the plane and the guy asked 'you have drones' `well yeah you know we have drones, it's on the paperwork`. So while they were doing all the preparations including research for over there it seems they did everything by the book it including filling out paperwork that included the drones which of the time was legal but the laws were changed basically as they were flying over there. They asked the local expert what they should do when they found out there was a problem and he's the one who told them to hide them. While there's certainly some criticism for decision-making perhaps it's not like they were setting out for nefarious purposes intending to break the law it was freak circumstances and advise that potentially was good or bad depending on whether their admitting to the drones and trying to send them back to the US or wherever would have gotten them arrested or been okay or what have you.
Forrest your stories are really interesting, but most importantly you have a really good knack at storytelling.

So while they were doing all the preparations including research for over there it seems they did everything by the book it including filling out paperwork that included the drones which of the time was legal
but the laws were changed basically as they were flying over there.

@kurlina6969 You tell me, 12 Hours before they boarded their flight the Nyanmar Incident occured and then 5 HOURS before that they put the No Drone Rule. Forrest had no knowledge of that UNTIL they landed it was literally as they got to customs his guide told him about the rule. And your equipment is being ready to get scanned. I'd start shitting bollocks if that happened plus they had nothing else to do. It was either you tell them you had the drone OR you smuggle it and with his situation A ton of people would understand why he'd smuggle it
I hope you heal your perception
The guide got paid to be responsible for the groups safety and as leader he told them to hide the drone. He got the beating he deserved for literally living in a country, knowing its law and culture and making decisions that got his whole group in a massive conundrum. If the airport customs did his job and found the drone then he wouldn't have lost his job. Can you imagine us customs seeing evidence of a bomb then letting the bomb through?
