  • When I bought this house, there were no keys for the old garage door, so I finally took the time to remove the lock, have it rekeyed, and reinstall it. This super easy process cost me less than $20 by taking it to a local locksmith.
    A new lock would have been so much more and may not be a viable option depending on the lock type. Three local garage door companies couldn't even order one like it.
    Tools used:
    Flat head screwdriver
    Phillips screwdriver
    Labor: total time to remove and reinstall... about 15 minutes (it look longer to set up the camera angles)

    What if you can't get into the inside? Same situation for me - bought a house with the same garage door lock and no keys but I can't get inside at all.

      A locksmith can pick it. It may cost you more for a house call but at least they'd get you in.

    Thank you! I completed this step but need help with removing the handles. I have the exact same lock/handle as you but can’t see a way to access the screws on the inside, they’re under that circular plate with the long bar attached. Thoughts?

      @ChristcrossCrafts  2 года назад +1

      Does the handle need to come off or just move to grant you access to the lock? If you rotate the handle, does that give you access to the screws because of the notch in the plate?

      It needs to come off completely…I’m recyclibg the old door panels into raised garden beds and don’t want a handle sticking out of the side :) I tried putting a screwdriver in the square hole on the inside handle to turn it but either I don’t have the hand strength or it’s become welded together by time.

      @@RachelCrowley304 shine a light to ensure its a screw and not a bolt. If it is the correct driver, spray some wd-40 or silicone spray in there. That should loosen it. If you have to, a hacksaw should cut it free.
      There may be a set screw on the underside of the handle. Check for that too.

      A crow bar and WD40 ended up doing the trick! Thanks for the advice!

    Great video, my garage door lock cylinder is loose from outside. I put the key and it just spins. How can I fix it?

    • @ChristcrossCrafts
      @ChristcrossCrafts  2 года назад

      The nut may be off or the tumbler inside that has the small pins may have broken off. You can follow the steps here and a locksmith can tear the assembly apart and fix the pins or rebuild it if needed.

      @@kelm1123 not all locks are the same. Different brands vary the designn. It needs to match the tumbler size and notch style.

    Don't get too complacent about the level of protection offered - I just had to drill out the lock on a garage where the key was lost, and it took literally 5 seconds... If you need to protect valuables, you'll need to take additional steps.

      Good point and of course. I have an alarm system that is tied to the house and shop. This just allows me an alternative to get in.

      @@ChristcrossCrafts I rather assumed that you would know this - I was posting more for the general user who might put too much trust in a lock that is so trivially easy to open.
