@@matthewdunphy8524 so? Bethesda does that all the time with Fallout and Elder Scroll, yet every time lyin’ Todd Howard announces a new game, everyone goes out and buys it.
I feel like fracturing the user base isn't a good idea. There's already confusion and uncertainty galore. Seems like this move may end up creating more issues than it solves. Just a blind guess, of course. I guess we'll see how it shakes out next year.
This is clearly an attempt to gather the vast majority of players into the codebase 4.0 'live' version of the game. It''s definitely a good idea. It'll be a rocky road though. There'll be some disgruntled folk and probably a bug or two along the way. Great to see the game moving forward decisively though.
They already did that with online/solo/group/private group play and being able to maintain progress between them but swap. This is just extending that even more. They're maybe attempting to unify players to one thing, but its a fundamentally poor choice they already made from day 1.
JFC if they didn't destroy optimization and the UI we wouldn't need 50 different modes and wouldn't have had to leave our console CMDR's behind. I actually played the game in what seemed like forever and had fun - after I switched back to Horizons. At least Horizons doesn't have violent frame stutters that even a 3090 can't solve.
I can only hope by "massive changes" they mean a complete gameplay rebalance, although I'm trying to keep my expectations realistic because at this point anything that could get anyone excited beyond the fact that it's new content can be considered impossible from fdev.
@@tedstriker4278 or they'll give you a worse version of a weapon you already have, it does more damage against certain npcs, but is worthless otherwise. Oh wait.
Yeah. As much as it pains me, if they would rebalance engineer grind to something reasonable and not instance hopping/game restarting meta - I would probably come back.
Most likely the "massive changes" will mean a ruined bubble, similar to what Cataclysm did in WoW, and the two modes let you switch back and forth between the two settings.
I think that's the whole reason they're doing this. They cut console development (I believe, I haven't played for a couple years, just been kind of following hoping for more content) and now they're trying to move a majority of the player base to a new client. I think they just couldn't add a lot of the content that they may (hopefully) want to add on old software/old consoles.
@@The_Diginaut as much as I want to believe that, their roadmap doesn’t give me much faith. Like it feels like we’re in a worse content drought than the bad old RNGineer days. Their insinuations surrounding Live and Legacy mode also don’t inspire much confidence if (like me) you don’t much engage with the xeno stuff.
I’m glad they’re keeping Legacy mode. I never bought into Odyssey due to performance concerns. Trying out 4.0 Horizons on the new engine recently confirmed my concerns. I’m sure Odyssey is running better now than it used to, but my PC still can’t run it very well.
While I understand that issues are there, this is like people hanging onto windows XP instead of moving to Windows 11.... sometime you have to sacrifice backward performance to be able to focus on newer features... splitting development is the biggest cause of slow upgrades and fixes.
@@markvenediktov6930 without knowing your settings and all the specs of the computer, these numbers mean little to nothing. Besides, "cpu usage x%" by itself does not mean much, sadly.
I have around 600 hours into elite, love the game, I love to explore, and it was my reason to play, and also my reason to quit some years ago, game is amazing and huge, but also its a huge empty game, there is no reason to explore unless take a few screenshots of beautiful locations, there is nothing unless getting your name in a planet. I want to return but they need to fill the galaxy with fun things to find and explore
If CG participation is finished for console, well, that's that then. Yeah I could switch to PC but that seems like a lot of effort for what looks much like a 2003 shooter, only without the sense of accomplishment or any vague suggestion of a point to it. Could the last person out of Sol turn the lights off. Peace.
This leaves me kinda bummed out. I just got back into elite a couple years after my friend group kinda split. I know half of my friends are gonna stick to legacy and the other half are gonna stick with live. Feels like I'm either gonna have to abandon one group, or spend twice as much time grinding, and I already am pretty far behind my friends without the time or energy to really just grind it out to catch up. Especially with the current state of engineer materials.
I wonder if they'll completely change the galaxy into a crappy alien shooter. If that's the case I'm happy I experienced Elite as it was originally intended, with exploration and trade being of the same importance.
Elite -complete- legacy edition does have a certain . . .. finality about it. If only that came alongside a singleplayer/offline mode separating the player from the gal-sim entirely (thus allowing for mod support). 3:30 a FULL player-save-split??? that's one hell of a shark-jumping moment to consider, understandable from a certain point of view but still, total cut-off of anyone not on an odyssey version is a HUGE announcement that in most other games would indicate a sale to another publisher. I still have no interest in or intent to touch "Odyssey", FDev have done enough damage to what one was my favorite (current, xwing/I-war2 still holds my heart) space-ship-flying game/experience for me to hand them any money for the shoddiest PvE FPS mode I have ever seen in a released product and no amount of turning half my ship-functions off to have angry thargoids nuking my ship out of the bubble will convince me otherwise. OTOH a metagame element with a truly revamped and upgraded and feature-complete powerplay re-introduction? That would certainly give me pause to reconsider my perspective.
Good job FDev, previously we needed 12 external tools and a few spreadsheets to play the game. Shortly we'll need 2 external tools and an excel spreadsheet just to be able to pick the correct version to play with our friends.
@@sideparting6845 I'd wish. Legacy is split into solo, mltiplayer and that hybrid where you only invite your friends. Live is split into Horizons and Odyssey and each if those is split into the 3 mods.
@@sideparting6845 i would love to see everyone in open, but not like this. FDev doesn't know how to balance. If they would increase weapon and shield weight and make good scanners weight more but be next to mandatory that would make things better. You want to have a ship built for combat? Sure, it can take a lot of punishment, but you lost the possibility to chase small shieldless ships. That would even out things. No good heavy scanners onboard? Sure, you can move faster but you can no longer detect shieldless small vessels.
@@ziggysstarman4211 Combat and balancing needed a second pass for a loooong time. Combat ships are way too superior against multipurpose (but combat focused) ships. They need to have an edge, but pilot skill should never be out of the question. Dont even let me begin about the engineering i.e. mandatory supergrind and even worse, "Buffing" mechanics by synthesizing...
I don't know why they don't just have one client and what you can do would just be limited by which expansion(s) you have. This having to use the 4.0 Horizons client as an Odyssey player to play with friends who doesn't have Odyssey just continues to fragment things. The population is already dwindling at a record breaking pace especially with the way SC is progressing. We need fewer instances/clients, not more. It's so hard to find and run into actual people these days.
Seems a bit daft having multiple versions and very complicated. I have done my console transfer some time back but I don't actually play on the PC version I still use the console because it is familiar and the controller mapping is good something I am having difficulty replicating on the PC.
Yeah same I originally started on Xbox but I ended up grabbing an inexpensive throttle and joystick, watched some keybinding videos on RUclips and got a damn good immersive experience going, not gonna lie it was a bit if work and trial and error though. All in all I think I’m happier now, I have a second monitor for my PC so I’ve been trying some of the 3rd party tools out there, I like trade computer extension, gives you a sick overlay at the top of your cockpit with navigation info, trade data, missions etc….pretty cool stuff
Hmm I don't get why you can't replicate the feeling by just using your controller on the PC. Afaik it uses the same layout for both systems. I for myself use an Xbox one controller and played the first 50 hours with the default setup but started doing custom bindings after a while because it is so helpful to have shield cell banks and heat sinks hot keyed and it is way better to have the landing gear key combo not on the same button as the engine boost 😁
@@Squee7e crap I never even thought to plug in my damn controller to my PC haha that’s actually such a simple freaking solution I should have tried …all well though now I’m used to the setup and I ended up getting into flying helicopters and planes in Microsoft Flight Simulator anyway so it worked out…. But you are absolutely right, I have a Stream deck I have setup with each button for like gear up/down, cargo scoop, docking etc…definitely a lot of fun messing around with stuff, I might actually spend more time setting up keybindings and stuff than playing the game 😂
Technically this isn't a split, it's just a change of plans away from a forced joining. 4.0 and 3.8 already couldn't instance together, and the original plan was to retire 3.8 and make it no longer available.
I'll stick with Legacy and just fly my nonengineered ship around blasting in solo or private away from the space I used to love back when people used to be less toxic. I'll build my own stories out in the stars. I'd like new ships and realistic thought processes to how ships should be evolving that they have yet to even tap into. They give then take away. More always becomes less for some reason. If you look for me I'll be flying around in my IC MARK 2 or ASP DESTROYER hunting pirates, protecting ships, and exploring the universe. Always love what you have happening Obsidian. Keep up the great work.
As a PC player without premium hardware, this kinda sucks because I was using 3.8 for performance, but also for material farming and VR since my machine can run 3.8 in VR much easier than 4.0. Having to do everything separately, especially with the changes to raw mat collection in 4.0 means that the game grind will suddenly get even harder than it already is.
As a longtime 3.8 player, I've just tried 4.0 material gathering in HIP 36601 and LHS 417. For sure, it's not the same experience, but is it harder/less enjoyable? Not really. I even found Odyssey on sale on Steam for half the price, so yeah, FDev convinced me to switch.
They really need to just fix the balancing of the overall game, having to logout and relog in to farm mats for hours is just abysmal. This game feels like it's so close to greatness, but just poor decision making keeps it from truly spreading its wings.
Sounds interesting I suspect they're going to smash up the bubble... or possibly open one of the permit locked areas... I'm not too sure what the point of legacy mode is - perhaps it's a way of giving people what they paid for whilst allowing people to continue to earn money from new versions/updates. At least it seems that Frontier is planning on continuing to develop Elite which is great.
@@phxbadash or to retain the ability to explore old planet generation, and in general archive the old version because it has better Performance and such. Not everything has to be a way to hide something negative.
I really don't like how much they're splitting up the player base. Imo it would be better to just be like it used to be, everyone plays together no matter what DLC you have or whatever. There's only so many of us left still playing. I'm a cargo transporter, I'm usually by Earth, and I rarely see any players. I see a player once every other week, *maybe*. I play on Odyssey. I really wish the player base wasn't so divided. I know it may not be possible now, but it still sucks.
Yeah, and the bubble is way too large tbh. I am saying for years now, the only way to advance is have the thargoids invade and collapse the bubble by a LOT, combine game features into meaningful experiences and this game is gonna blow it out of the park with new players and old ones returning. Instead they split even more and add more single isolated features...
I’ve spent most of my time in ED either exploring or trading. I’ve never been interested in pirate work, mining or combat and have only ever done so to protect my ship or to try things out. I bought odyssey when it was announced but haven’t participated in any missions as first person games have never interested me and I couldn’t be bothered to go through the learning curve. I’m guessing any updates will not affect me in any material way.
It has been quite a long time since explorers received an update, which is a shame since it has been my favourite Activity in the game. As of now frontier completely abandoned it, together with VR and their planetary tech.
Actually the on-foot missions to deliver or fetch a package from a settlement are a good intro. Just don't get your gun out and don't run if they try to scan you. As for exploring, plant scanning adds another dimension.
When the very first ad is about the Star Citizen free fly and then there is an Elite Dangerous video. I'm telling you the people at RSI really know how to cross promote and sell copies of games off the backs of other space game ROFL!!!
I really hope they get the 4.0 version running better. It's needs so much more computing power to run well in general even outside of on foot content. I liked switching to 3.8 to save power on my steam deck as it takes so much less power to run at the same frame rate as 4.0/odyssey.
That’s my biggest bugbear as well, because the game used to run phenomenally well, but since Odyssey it has run like shit despite not looking any better.
Finally bought Odyssey today after being away from ED for a few years and enjoyed the initial exposure to it. Basically relearning the game at this point. Looking forward to seeing what Frontier does with this.
if the Legacy won't affect the Live BGS they will have to service two different universes. The question is, how quickly they (eddb, etc.) can implement two universes
Mmmm I don't know.... I still think that focusing all efforts in combat as FD has been doing since Odyssey was released , only shows a lack of imagination and courage on their side. But let's see...
I'm wondering / hoping that they're finally going to introduce NPC aliens to the entire galaxy. There's no question it'd spice up the game a lot, and there's no doubt not everyone will want it.
When I got this game for console back in 2019 I didn't get it so I could play a shitty version of COD in space. That being said you aren't wrong that it will give players more to do( if they actually want fps game play) I just wonder about how quickly that game loop will get stale. I guess it depends on the depth of implementation. I for one am not holding my breath
They should burn a good portion of the bubble down and establish thargoid controlled systems as well as them being able to contest human controlled systems if ignored. Kinda as a permanent gameplay aspect / loop.
@@neonspark707 I wouldn't call Elite a "dead" galaxy. It's just that it is supposed to be based on our real Milky Way where, unlike the fictional galaxies of Star Trek or Star Wars, there aren't 10,000 other advanced, spacefaring civilizations.
@@scuzzymuzzlefug5710 Yeah Odyssey is a complete waste of hard drive space. A first person shooter in space is just so embarrassingly stupid. I think I would have slapped the person who floated the idea at the first meeting. Thargoids was also the worst inclusion, everything is super realistic (even in just theory) until you get to the alien space flowers, then it degrades the entire game to the fantasy realm. I haven't once seen nor purposefully went to see a Thargoid, if these things become unavoidable, then I'll probably just stop playing until they're gone and the game returns to some form of normality. I swear devs seem to listen only to 15 year olds on reddit who want everything to be some form of CoD to soothe their A.D.D.
So the stuff I do on PS4 and Series S won't affect the BGS for our player faction on PC apart from those playing in legacy mode? All very confusing and segregating the player base even more. So it's basically we will have two instances of the galaxy now. MULTIVERSE confirmed!
Thanks Obsidian for keeping us appraised of what's going on, and yes can only assume they're giving that option because they know some may not like what's coming haha. Am looking forward to see what they do :)
Even video games have become polarized. All of it is happening at once. Did it happen yet? Did our realities split? What is our current situation? Do we have one timeline merging into two or two timelines merging into one? Mandela in full effect
My takeaway from this is that the player base is going to be siloed even further than it already was after the console debacle. I don't see how this is a good thing. Moreover, commander data transfer is nice and all, but most of us, who - oh, I dunno, aren't obscenely affluent, can't just go and buy a four-digit price tag gaming PC, just to continue to play a game that consistently gives us the middle finger.
(dont forget the costs over all of having to update the hardware every 6-12 months either - i used to game on PC until i realised it cost's more than it's worth just to keep it up-to-date ahem)
I hate this idea. The correct course of action is to revert the negative 4.0 aspects to make it soluble to the legacy crowd, not splitting the fan base
I think Frontier will choose to do something centered around RNG, as they tend to, and probably geared towards combat to further validate Odyssey. So personally, my guess is that they'll have a large number of stations burning/destroyed, a large number of planets(or all?) inhabited by on-foot Thargoid soldiers, and probably have Thargoid interdictions become more frequent/hostile in all parts of The Bubble. Maybe even outside of The Bubble too. I can see why something like that would incentivize the creation of a LEGACY Mode, because it would make every single noncombat part of the game more annoying.
Now that they're creating two different CMDR saves, the justifications for not having a strictly-offline CMDR in true offline mode just got weaker. But I bet they still won't do that.
Great informative video as always! Thanks . Live Mode is needed to move forward, along with technology. And Legacy Mode will let you keep in touch with old friends. Thanks Frontier for being considerate and keep moving forward! I will keep up.
Frontier is mostly changing shit, not adding shit. My apartment will have a fresh new update 14 tomorrow when I move the furniture to clean. I'll tell my landlord I renovated the place per Frontier's standards.
As someone that plays solo, let me know when the engineering and missions get an overhaul. These updates do absolutely nothing for the stagnant gameplay we already have.
Yea this type of 'update' is little more than the comittee telling us they will have another meeting about the comittee... its just turning into a circle jerk.... they need to cut the backward support and push forward even if means giving away Odysesy inthe same way they did with Horizons a year or two post launch. If they keep wasting money keeping the old versions active, they are taking money and dev time away from fixing the newest client.
I wonder how this will affect FCs. Upon implementation will we have one FC for each of Live and Legacy mode (and the maintenance to upkeep in each too) or will one FC serve both modes? Hopefully the latter if only for the sake of inara and those who keep it going for the player base.
No question I’ll be in 3.8 99% of the time (except when I want PvP). I’m actually happy about this, especially the fact the bgs is separated as Odyssey has nearly destroyed Anarchy factions.
Basically just sounds like FDev is trying to phase out everything pre-4.0 and move on with their future updates. Sounds reasonable and expected. From ED Odyssey and onward should almost be considered a PC only game. FDev doesn't want to keep dragging consoles along since they can't keep up with their PC based development. I'm alright with this next step. I just hope these "new mechanics" aren't entirely disappointing, but it's FDev so....we'll see when we see.
My understanding is, Odyssey players will now have access to Horizons 4.0 instead of 2.8. It's not like a Horizon player and Odyssey player will be able to join the same 4.0 instance, but more the Odyssey player can limit their game to Horizon only features and in turn access the Horizons instance. This PEGI aspect would still very much be in affect and unlike what you note probably is very much the reason Horizon 4.0 and Odyssey remain on separate instances. The only difference being Odyssey players can now access Horizon 4.0 mode.
What they actually wanted to say is that the original backers and purchasers of the game will not receive updates from here on. They will be called "LEGACY players". Anyone who wants updates needs to buy the content packs which are as expensive as the actual game (or more).
I’ve been pretty happy with Odyssey, so Live mode will always be my go-to. Personally, I cannot wait to see what Frontier has in-store for us in these next upcoming updates.
I find it interesting that Frontier would breach the game off further to ensure that the player base cries less. It makes me wonder at the amount of time that has been wasted in hand ringing over the possible hurt feelings of the player base. Why someone would choose a dead copy of a game vs live, I have no idea. But at least in live we can look forward to getting rid of the console carriers and the carriers of folks that don’t go into live.
Yes they seem to have gone to monumental effort to placate a noisy fanbase, like players on the forums lurking in the Odyssey subforum constantly whining and stating that they'd never buy Odyssey, yet putting their opinions constantly in (oldduck is a big offender) and complaining or nitpicking about Odyssey features when they haven't even paid Frontier for it. It honestly baffles my mind! At least this means we can wave goodbye to all the whiners who don't want to upgrade and want their original ancient PCs to run a more modern game. I am sure their hairlines and cars aren't stuck a decade in the past, yet they want identical performance from a decade old PC running a modern game... Good riddance I say, and well done to Frontier for even bothering to pander to them instead of just saying "we are only supporting one version as of December - Odyssey". Frontier isn't perfect at all (they break things constantly and their bug tracker is a joke) but this seems a kindness with legacy mode.
I came back to ED after almost a month, only have Horizons and updated to 4.0 last week. The game looks soooo much better! I know Odyssey players had this for some time now, but for me, wow is the game looking good now.
Well, we got the ability to trudge around on planets but, I still think we need to be able to walk in our ships and abandoned buildings on planets. I guess the Thargoids are just going to be enemies and there will be no story narrative where humans can befriend them. As the story goes, just like humans, not all Thargoids are bad. There are, for sure, some Harry Potter’s in the universe 🤔
They are a hivemind. Whatever they do is what ordered by the queen/princesses, none of them are individuals except for those giving orders, of which no player has ever encountered in the game
Based on some of the game's "Story" news updates recently, it sounds like they might be trying to walk back the Thargoid war stuff, but you never know with FDev, they've got about as much knowledge of what's coming as we do.
I guess PowerPlay is going to be so borked now, with console players having no impact on it whatsoever… A tremendous chunk of the elite population is just being cut off, ffs
So those who have FC on console can't transfer across without losing FC or the credits . So much for plenty of notice . Improved communication from Fdev at its best
I doubt it, but I would like that also. I uninstalled this game shortly after the release of Odyssey because it was obvious Frontier were slowly dropping VR support.
I do like that they keep the 3.8, as it was a good enviroment, and old rigs can also handle (like my work laptop). But sperateing completely the two, i am not big fan of that. So if is achieve something in the one build, i won't get it in the other. Well maybe they do bring in things which makes it neccessary, then this is fine, but still not the best.
Uninstalled the game sadly enough. As a ps4 user it just doesn't make sense to keep playing. Which hurts lol but such is life. Back to No Mans Sky I go haha.
Still no Multi-crew fix, no bots in dead arena . They refuse to fix problems that have been an issue for years but push forward. I'm a tradesman and don't understand this ideology. They've got zero pride in thier work.
@@sideparting6845 they've had years to fix the forementioned problems and didn't even acknowledge them. They're pushing a dead car on square wheels and don't even know it.
I don't really mind the 2 versions. I think FDev are being very fair in this case. To me it's just like being able to play the up-to-date version or any of the previous versions - like you can with the original Elite.
Shake up the galaxy so the story suddenly matters and you annoy people who don't want change. Keep everything the same and everyone else gets bored. Splitting the game makes sense.
I think we are about to get a lot more pew pew action judging by current events, but yea I preferred elite when it was simpler more focused, I don't even bother with engineering tbh
Unless I’m not understanding, we now have yet another level at which players are split: those who play solo, those who own only the core game, those who have Horizons, those who have Odyssey and, finally, those who are in legacy mode lol Now, part of the reason I stopped playing at the tail end of the narrative, just before the finale, was because I never saw anyone at any of the CGs, except a few Gankers. It didn’t feel like anything to me. It just felt like dropping into an NHSS or conflict zone in a random system with no CG attached to it. Now, came to find out, on the last day of the event that everyone was saying that most people were in Horizons lol
from what i have seen they have handled it well - you just have to make sure you highlight "excluding odyssey" when you want to search anything if you are not in odyssey.
Sounds like the lead up to a game changing event like Cataclysm was in WOW. Sounds like they learned Blizzards lesson and anticipated the demand for an Elite "classic" version. Will be interesting to see how brutal they will be in reshaping the game landscape. This could indeed be a fresh new start.
Agreed. Being able to fly in VR is the only thing that still keeps me interested in the game. If that goes away, then there's nothing left to do but uninstall. :/
I really hope they have taken 3rd party tools into account, EDSM for example will need a new API key or…. Keep same one and a new one for Legacy? Can Inara and EDSM afford separate servers?
It would mean code development and a bit of extra data in a few tables for sites like Inara, not separate servers. Still, existing tools would likely not function as expected for everyone until updated for the split.
Amazing video as always. Informative, personal opinion and no biased opinions. Just hope that we see some new ships or ship classes being released. Would love a thargoid or new alien species crafts thrown in the mix to assist us in the fight against them Thargoids!
just leave me the current game I'm playing, & I'll be happy. Too bad about not having the same profile between Legacy & Live. Right now, if I'm going to be flying in & out of stations, I have to use 3.8 because in 4.0, my computer lags so far behind that the controls stop responding correctly to my inputs. Out exploring, I'll play 4.0 just for the view. It'll be interesting to see what Update 14 does to the galaxy, & the game.
Your PC can't store and use the massive amount of real data this game requires. Much less the BGS. Offline mode will never be a thing. Its not possible.
@@Wylie288 What massive amount of data? Isn't nearly all the galaxy procedurally generated by the client as needed? Yes. It's called the Stellar Forge system. As for the BGS... I can't see it being much more CPU intensive than what complex turn-based 4X games perform on each new turn.
I'm hoping it will be survival mechanics, def wont be ship interiors. But if I can build a base with a dock on a planet for some money, I would do that or have to decorate it with stuff you buy from stations, like consumer electronics, maybe having to eat, or sleep. Idk. something to make the game more immersive.
My prediction is... The new update coming will have Thargoids in the bubble, making it not fun to try and do anything with thargoids constantly being an issue and something that you deal with above all else. So if you did not spend the stupid amount of hours grinding to fight thargoids, you won't have much of a chance to do anything, other than die/flee the thargoids. Hope I am wrong but I don't think I am, Fdev seems dead set on doing whatever they feel like no matter how much it may/will hurt the player base. Oh well, was a fun game, time to move on I guess.
They are introducing new ax weapons which will be something between current (useless) we have and guardian ones. You will not need to unlock them , they will be just for purchase. With that move i think they want to make ax combat far more accesable to everyone, this is very smart move. For engineering . You need almost non to be able to kill 2 smallest interceptors, i have made cheap chiftain for test so friends which will play with me don't need to farm almost nothing. I gave engineering only to thrusters to g3 and thermal beam laser to g3 s well. im able to kil medusa with that junk. So its not matter of farm, but skill ;]
lol .. expecting more grind as there is no way this game gets anytime ship interiors, atmospheric planets, exploration gameplay, base construction, space legs ... just grind on top of the grind. Knowing this, no expectation, no disappointment and no need obsolete ent
Not a bad compromise on the part of Frontier, considering what they had to work with, and the complaints from the populace. Personally, I still don't want to play Odyssey, but good to keep getting updates.
I called it, it seems: The Thargoids are going to conquer the galaxy (unless the players are very good and can win the Second Thargoid War). After that, humanity is going to be based on Colonia and the Live Mode Commanders will be fighting to reclaim the Thargoid-dominated Bubble. Not everyone wants to be in a survival-or-extinction star war with no access to the familiar parts of the galaxy. Legacy Mode enables you to enjoy the 'classic' Elite without having to deal with being part of a complicated multi-layer story with specific community goals and other missions intended to be part of humanity's fight-back.
i wish all the ax fighters/defenders the very best of luck! - if they had not almost halved the player base - you would have had a substantial amount of reinforcements - but its going to be a hell of a war now, and chances of victory? i reckon 30% especially when the goids reinforce, consolidate and swarm in. Might end up like BSG (battle star galactica) where you end up having to move constantly just to survive - because from what i have seen - the goids are hell bent on a genenocide of humanity in it. Just dont make the same mistake the gaurdians did that will end up in complete extinction of humanity too. Like i said best of luck to the AX fighters/defenders
Errrrrr like live mode and legacy mode? Simple: play the live mode to be current. Hardly splitting the user base. The only ones splitting the user base are the ones who would refuse to play in live mode or use the FREE PC version they've been given.
Why? IMO the separation will be less than it is now. ConsideringLive and legacy will now have split progress, there's no reason for ppl to really play there on CG's and stuff, so now there's actually lesser count of the relevant game versions. Plus ppl who have Odyssey can now play Live Horizons together with their friends who don't have Odyssey, and not Legacy Horizons. Guess that ultimately we will see, but Im pretty sure it will now be more active.
not changing the game like they are clearly planning to would kill it too, options arent a bad thing Retail WoW/WoW Classic is doing fine despite being an older game with a questionable history it works, if done correctly
@@JimBobJoeB0b Odyssey was the nail in thr coffin for me, haven't played since. And unless they make it more of a game and less of a chore to actually do things... I don't see myself coming back anytime soon, if ever
I get the feeling that the goids are going to start interdicting (not just hyperdicting) ships everywhere in the bubble, and they're going to be extremely aggressive.
Why not just make Legacy mode an offline version of the game and let us make mods for it? I would have much preferred that.
Because then they will start to have trouble competing with the moded version of their own game.
and what, actually have fun? preposterous!!!!!
Because the game might actually work. We can't have that.

I’m losing count of how many branches of this game we have now
This is clearly an attempt to gather the vast majority of players into the codebase 4.0 'live' version of the game. It''s definitely a good idea.
It'll be a rocky road though. There'll be some disgruntled folk and probably a bug or two along the way.
Great to see the game moving forward decisively though.
@@trouvereyork Doesn't make the new planets any less shit.
They already did that with online/solo/group/private group play and being able to maintain progress between them but swap. This is just extending that even more. They're maybe attempting to unify players to one thing, but its a fundamentally poor choice they already made from day 1.
full agree, lets just split the already low population seems logical..
It means 5 new engineers and Grind for those 😂
@@tedstriker4278 or they'll give you a worse version of a weapon you already have, it does more damage against certain npcs, but is worthless otherwise. Oh wait.

Hopefully the seperated profiles will make new things easier to implements since they dont have to think about making it work in 3.8 anymore
Lol, lmao even. I _wish_ it was like that

I’m glad they’re keeping Legacy mode. I never bought into Odyssey due to performance concerns. Trying out 4.0 Horizons on the new engine recently confirmed my concerns. I’m sure Odyssey is running better now than it used to, but my PC still can’t run it very well.
I have not had a single issue running Odyssey. Just curious about your specs. Cpu, gpu, ram?
You should give a chance play odyssey on Nvidia Geforce Now.
While I understand that issues are there, this is like people hanging onto windows XP instead of moving to Windows 11.... sometime you have to sacrifice backward performance to be able to focus on newer features... splitting development is the biggest cause of slow upgrades and fixes.

I want to return but they need to fill the galaxy with fun things to find and explore
Agreed 100%
The idea of a space accountant game is good ideologically. But in practice. It is a dead end for long term players.
@@SophiaAphrodite I wish thargoids being something different a giant dartboard
Why even mention Odyssey here, lol. You can just play Live Horizons (like 4.0 Horizons now)
Good job FDev, previously we needed 12 external tools and a few spreadsheets to play the game.
Shortly we'll need 2 external tools and an excel spreadsheet just to be able to pick the correct version to play with our friends.
Not a big spreadsheet though - only 2 cells in it: legacy, and live...

You can connect a controller to pc tho
I understand where this change is coming from, but splitting your playerbase is never a good thing.
Not to mention if you don’t have a pc, it’s basically “go screw yourself” lol
Technically this isn't a split, it's just a change of plans away from a forced joining. 4.0 and 3.8 already couldn't instance together, and the original plan was to retire 3.8 and make it no longer available.
Thanks for the heads-up Ant.. best get a wiggle on and get the console transfer sorted!
At least it seems that Frontier is planning on continuing to develop Elite which is great.
it's sole existance is to allow them to quietly drop console versions once people either switch over or stop playing

Agreed.
I wish they ditched the single player and private lobbies. Then it would feel more alive.
@@TsvetanVR 100% agreed. Everyone needs to play together, I want to see people more often.
I play Solo because I just really don't like PvP. If there was an option to avoid PvP in Public, you'd see me (and many more CMDRs) in-game.
Also 4.0 version is poor in VR, frame rates really struggle in some situations typically in Res sites.
That’s my biggest bugbear as well, because the game used to run phenomenally well, but since Odyssey it has run like shit despite not looking any better.
makes zero sense, but we're use to that from FDev
Finally bought Odyssey today after being away from ED for a few years and enjoyed the initial exposure to it. Basically relearning the game at this point. Looking forward to seeing what Frontier does with this.
Relearning sucks! I’m in the same boat . I Haven’t played in few years and a lot of stuff has changed
I really want to hop back into elite, but not going to until I see what they have planned for the future
What I'm curious about is if this means all the third-party tools and sites will have to split/duplicate into two parallel instances as well.
I hope they do. Legacy mode without Inara and EDDB will be a pain.
@@nyxzorander Even so there would be smaller playebase for each and that means less updated and... not good.

I for one am not holding my breath
nope i dont think so.

What they're basically saying is: "If you want the new updates/stories, you have to fork out for DLCs!!"
Jeez, that’s a hell of a take an I hope you ain’t right. Hahaha.
Not really, you can get them in Horizons 4.0 which is free to all players on PC with Horizons 3.8
I'm hoping the base building seen mentioned in code was referring to Thargoids setting up hives/bases that we have to destroy, if not our own.
the need to merge horizons and odyssey so we are together the same as it was when horizons came out

I was hoping this would mean Live as in online play, and Legacy being solo play locally, without internet connection
Me too, but we'll have to keep dreaming
Yeah, I thought so too.. how are frontier so bad at this ?
Now that they're creating two different CMDR saves, the justifications for not having a strictly-offline CMDR in true offline mode just got weaker. But I bet they still won't do that.
Great informative video as always! Thanks . Live Mode is needed to move forward, along with technology. And Legacy Mode will let you keep in touch with old friends. Thanks Frontier for being considerate and keep moving forward! I will keep up.
Sounds like cluster-eff is getting even more clustered.
Frontier is mostly changing shit, not adding shit. My apartment will have a fresh new update 14 tomorrow when I move the furniture to clean. I'll tell my landlord I renovated the place per Frontier's standards.
It is so confusing , even when explained by you. I cant see how much this alleviates the fact that the community is already way too fractured.

Sounds reasonable and expected.
From ED Odyssey and onward should almost be considered a PC only game.
FDev doesn't want to keep dragging consoles along since they can't keep up with their PC based development.

Right there with you. Let's go!
At least we know what they meant by "critical updates" for console

Unless I’m not understanding, we now have yet another level at which players are split: those who play solo, those who own only the core game, those who have Horizons, those who have Odyssey and, finally, those who are in legacy mode lol
Now, part of the reason I stopped playing at the tail end of the narrative, just before the finale, was because I never saw anyone at any of the CGs, except a few Gankers. It didn’t feel like anything to me. It just felt like dropping into an NHSS or conflict zone in a random system with no CG attached to it. Now, came to find out, on the last day of the event that everyone was saying that most people were in Horizons lol
Hm, I actually wonder how say Inara will deal with this.
from what i have seen they have handled it well - you just have to make sure you highlight "excluding odyssey" when you want to search anything if you are not in odyssey.
Legacy mode looks like a Horizons' deathbed to me. Once Horizons dies Elite dangerous dies for me, unless some miracle makes Oddy not suck in VR.
Agreed. Being able to fly in VR is the only thing that still keeps me interested in the game. If that goes away, then there's nothing left to do but uninstall. :/
let's be clear - for the moment VR still works except when on foot. I play exclusively in Ody in VR and I never play the on foot stuff.
Thank you for the coverage and for your persistence.
You're saving me a lot of time, that I don't have, of reading through release notes.
4th "Thargoid" faction incoming? That WOULD affect the BGS in a MASSIVE way.:D
So now we're all waiting for an OFFLINE mode...
The character and everything that entails the game was made once and is already this now makes another change
Curious to know if the legacy version will get real mods now that it’s basically finished version.
I doubt it. It sounds like they are just going to abandon it and keep it ticking over, and that's all.
I am cautiously excited about the announcement of new gameplay mechanics.
Every game with new game mechanics have previous hype marketing. ED not. Some new materials set to grind.
I guarantee you’ll be back anyways hahaha
As long as you don't drop into Non-human signal sources you will be fine. You don't have to deal with anything if you don't want to.
What a dumb take
They are introducing new ax weapons which will be something between current (useless) we have and guardian ones.
@@GainDamage Yea totally, cause hyperdiction is definitely not a thing.
lol .. expecting more grind as there is no way this game gets anytime ship interiors, atmospheric planets, exploration gameplay, base construction, space legs ... just grind on top of the grind. Knowing this, no expectation, no disappointment and no need obsolete ent
Erm it already has space legs in oddessey with the odessey dlc you can get out your shop and walk round
That would be kind of awesome imo!
i wish all the ax fighters/defenders the very best of luck!
If they're going to split the saves like that, I should get a fleet carrier before it happens...
I'll stay in the dont play mode!
Good, lets split the userbase even further. It went so well last time.
Errrrrr like live mode and legacy mode? Simple: play the live mode to be current. Hardly splitting the user base. The only ones splitting the user base are the ones who would refuse to play in live mode or use the FREE PC version they've been given.
splitting the community into two different modes will be the final nail into the coffin
Guess that ultimately we will see, but Im pretty sure it will now be more active.
not changing the game like they are clearly planning to would kill it too, options arent a bad thing Retail WoW/WoW Classic is doing fine despite being an older game with a questionable history
it works, if done correctly
Maybe they think they can ignore instancing issues if they split the community just one more time. See you in Live/Ody/mobius US or Live/Ody/OXI
“Final nail in the coffin” people said Odyssey would be the final nail in the coffin. And that’s just one of many cases of that tired old claim.
Being a PC player I hope to see all console players soon in the LIVE MODE! :)
Well..... at least we know the sound will be good.
