My cockatiel turns 25 next year ❤️ Update: Sadly, Alley passed away in mid-April 2023, just a few months shy of his 28th birthday. I spent his entire with him. He was my best friend since I was 12 years old (I’ll be 40 in a week). I’ll miss him deeply for the rest of my life. Our bond was a once-in-a-lifetime companionship that I will forever be grateful to have been blessed with.

@@cheshireterror624 Not necessarily true. Depends on the bird. Birds are individuals. Some birds are more interested in mimicry than others. My previous cockatiel was an excellent mimic and had a vocabulary of around 25 to 30 very clear phrases, hand raised bird, loved everyone but especially attracted to human females. Repetition and practice is the key to clarity, not the species.

I got my cockatiel Chipper when he was 4 months old from a birds specialty pet store. He was/is missing one of his toenails and I think he was being rejected by prospective owners for that reason(it's actually not a problem).Yet he looked healthy, he looked happy so upon my taking him home, I named him Chipper because he looked just that. Within a day, he learned how to perch on my finger and loved his head pets. And once Chipper learned how to whistle, talk and sing, there was no stopping him! It's interesting how you likened owning a cockatiel to owning a dog. When I take Chipper in his carrying case to get clipped, he'll do his repertoire during the ride--he provides the entertainment! He's also very docile when he gets his wings and toenails clipped at the place I got him from--the owner has referred to Chipper as "a sweet little bird." Chipper is now going on 15 years old. Up to this point, he hasn't experienced any medical issues and I hope he lives the longest lifespan..if longer, even better.

My cockatiel came into my life totally by accident. I live in Phnom Penh and it appeared on my neighbour's balcony and was almost eaten by his cat.
Nobody came to claim her (I think a she ... but no idea), despite my landlady asking around. So I kept her.
At the time I was locked down due to covid. The affection this little bird showed won my heart. But she was also annoyingly needy lol.
Once the lockdown was over I purchased a decent cage (the door is always open and she comes out whenever she feels like it), toys, proper food, calcium blocks etc.
As I was going back to work I wanted a companion bird. The pet shop owner only had his own 4 month old cockatiel, so I was looking at love birds. But then he decided to sell me his pet.
They are fantastic. No more needy squawking, but still all the affection. They are like a couple of winged puppies and love being petted and scratched and just hanging out on me.
These birds are really amazing pets and give me so much love I can't imagine a home without them!

I can't imagine being without my 'tiels and you're right- they are affectionate like dogs and if they have been properly trained, they can't wait to see you, fly to you and interact with you. For me, that's a perfect bird pet. I've had COPD for most of my life and the dander doesn't affect me at all ,but cat dander and some dog dander does. I’m looking into getting a Cockatiel as my budgies flew away a little while ago, so I came to this channel to see what you had on the topic of Cockatiels. Now I’ll share my personal opinion on the points in this video.
Them being affectionate is the most important aspect of this video for me. My budgies never appreciated my attempts to make them feel safe, and usually ignored me or were frightened of me. Its important to me to have an affectionate pet because of this, so a Cockatiel would be perfect. The fact that Cockatiels are very calm is also perfect for me, because, like everyone, I like to take time to rest or read. Having a snuggle bird to do that with is exactly what I want. I don’t particularly mind about the lifespan as long as I get a few years with my bird. But its reassuring to know they live long enough to stay with me throughout my life. Teaching them to talk would be fun, but I don’t mind whether they can or not. Its not a point that stands out to me especially, but its preferable. Thanks for this video!

Cockatiels really are the best. I had a Pearl cockatiel… he was so affectionate and loved us so much, so did we and he became a part of our family! The only thing that helps me get my mind off his death is other cockatiel videos and the fact that we’re getting another one.. he died last month and I can’t take all this pain….

Hey I was wondering do you need to microchip a bird? Or have some way of keeping track because I wouldn’t want to lose my bird. Thanks!

Yeah I have a budgie and we talk a lot and hes on my hand all the time but won’t let me pet him and it gets frustrating sometimes but now I’ve just accepted it and recently I’ve been looking into a cockatiel and I just wanna be able to let him and chill and have a little buddy like my budgie but I’m just curious if cockatiels are good

So cute, how did you get them to be so comfortable so they would sit on you like that. I am trying but my ties are very jumpy, won’t let my fingers touch them beside holding, and clipping wings to force them to be more dependent sound just so horrible...

Do you recommend getting 2 Tiels at the same time initially? I got a big cage and toys. I want one for me and one for my daughter. Worried they may bond together more than us? Also thinking whether it would be better to introduce them both to the same cage/home initially rather than adding one later to the other's territory?

As a child we had 4 birds in our house. A Cockatiel, Budgie, and 2 Canaries all of which were very tame. Having them all out at once was hilarious!

I'm considering having one. I give myself a couple of months to understand more though. I live in Taiwan, they are easy to find in Taipei's bird market but one thing troubles me. There are no heating systems in most of houses and in winter the inside temperature can sometimes drop to 13°C and in the summer it can go up to more than 30° in the appartment. I can't leave the A.C on all day. How well can they handle those temperatures?

I got a male cockatiel couple of weeks ago 6 months old from a pet shop, he still hiss at me and try bite if i take my finger near him. Although he like sounds on youtube videos of whistle and other cockatiel sounds. How should i approach to tame him from this stage? I didnt cut his wings yet should i do so?

Yeah I have 2 that I was given because they where to noisy I believe the old owner called them. Chip and chap is singing alot true. But they are like my children already after a month. They will boss me around if they can. But I'm learning and I can now hold chip in my hand. They are truly the most aMASING little creatures. Get one they are not just birds that sits in ur cage. They are playfull and loving like many other pets
And dear me are they stubborn haha

Had a pair of male cockatiels who lived to be 16. Sadly they passed away last year about 6 months apart from each other. We really miss them. We have a .5 year old male (Chewy) who is a real cuddle bug.
What’s your take on wing clipping? Our first cockatiels seemed to pick up flight and avoiding collisions pretty well. We clipped them for a while but one of them would have seizures when taking them in to get groomed so we stopped trimming their nails/wings. Chewy hasn’t been as nimble...yet. When we bought him he was clipped but seemed more accident prone as he’d jump off things and flop to the ground, often busting his tail feathers in the process (occasionally a blood feather.....scary). But as his wings grew out he’s flying around more but we’re worried he might hit something as he’s not too great at landing yet. On the plus side he’s finally grown his tail out.

I am thinking of getting one. I was wondering about the noise. Is it really loud? As I live in apartment complex and I don't want my neighbors to hate me. You know what I mean.

Yep they are great fun , and they can mime , my dad used to hear what he thought was the phone ringing , turned out to be the bird miming the phone , I'd be doing tug of war with it of course I did not let it win as a result it would fall off the table , it once stuck its head in my mouth picking my teeth ( great fun ) it used to love the light on the ceiling a little too much , we used to wonder why we had to change so many bulbs on it , they must of had something to do with it , barely changed any since they died , that was back in the ninties never had one since .

We had 3 cocktaiels , each one of them had a different personality completely, the older 2 were hand raised by my brother, the female cockatiel was absolutely nuts she was crazy u can tell there’s something wrong inside her brain 😅 she used to scream for no reason 🤦🏻‍♀️ fly and hit the window 😒 and she was the dirtiest bird i have ever seen 🤣 the male cockatiel was just like a prince he always looked soooo good and clean and he didn’t like too much petting 🤣 the last one was male cockatiel i did the hand raising and he was unbelievably affectionate with me all he wanted to do all day long is to kiss and cuddle ❤️
