ANYTHING you put before God is idolatry, even your Family, sports, material possessions, money, dreams/goals.

For everyone worried about whether a collectible can be an idol... this is my take... I am a doll collector I was so worried about this topic. Let's think about what an idol is. Idols were literally fed food, bowed to, sacrificed to, WORSHIPPED. An item from my understanding in itself is not an idol it's what you do with it. What is some evidence of this? First let's think about the bronze serpent that Moses had on his staff... apparently later it was taken and used as an idol and they burned incense for it and then it had to be destroyed. Was the original purpose bad? No it became bad.
Next, the instructions Solomon was given for the temple construction, the temple had 2 cherubim. Did he worship them? No. What we need to think about is this... how much time do I spend dedicating my life to this? Is it something I buy and set on a shelf and admire as I pass by? Is it something I spend hours a day searching for? Is it taking all of my free time? Is my heart leaning toward this world or eternity? Do I know people in need that I could be helping instead? Am I known as a collector? Or a giver?
    Its all about balance. ♥️

Thanks for this man. It's super hard for me to keep everything in balance, as I have an addictive/obsessive personality. God is good, so I choose to see the good things about my personality (makes for a great writer!) But the bad aspects (getting too fixated on things I enjoy) I struggle against every day. There's a balance, and one that my brain bucks against.

Thank you very much for this. I often find myself very insecure with my nerdy interests especially when it comes to collecting. I don't know where I got the idea that being into comics and collecting action figures was somehow a sin, but it's a thought I can struggle with and one that I think the devil takes advantage of to discourage me. Your video helps remind me that it's okay to have and express these interests so long as I set boundaries and remember that they are just that, a fun interest. The second they get between me and God abd his commandments, then they are an idol and then they are a problem. Something I need to remember is to always practice cautiousness, not condemnation.
It's super refreshing to hear a biblical perspective on these things. I look forward to going through the rest of your videos and seeing what other wisdom you have to share!

It has calmed some anxieties I've been feeling the last few days, not so much about geeky collecting but other materialistic hobbies (cars). Thanks for the question! My knee-jerk response would be to say that collecting is an activity and coveting is an attitude. You can collect because you covet. You can also collect to enjoy or to share or do both. Yeah, that sounds familiar. You didn't imply this, but I hope my reference to hoarding wasn't taken as mockery toward those who hoard or who have OCD. There's a touch of OCD tendencies in my family, but I doubt anything that qualifies as clinical. That must be really challenging to live with! I wish I had some magic words that could help you in that. Have you considered any form of counseling? (Our pastor calls it "renting a friend".) This is something I been askin for awhile now since I’ve been spiritually awakened by what’s going on in our world today. It’s pretty obvious Prophecies in the Bible are coming to pass. But I not only collect because I’m a Geek and a Kid at heart, I’m also an artist. Soo collecting is kinda a huge part of being an artist and my inspiration comes from the cartoons and games I collect. I’ve heard a verse dont know it off my head but says that idolatry is a sin, but I don’t pray or worship my toys. I also have boys and I don’t want to rob them of a childhood similar to the one I had growing up. What I have spoken to other Christian’s about that use to collect is the fact that some of these products or toy companies use satanic symbolism or are just outright demonic. Like Pokémon for instance I heard Pokémon is demonic. And Naruto has 666 symbol in Sasukes Sharingan eyes. I take in account that their is evil on almost everything anime/ comic but there is also a balance of good, except the good we see portrayed in cartoons never glorified or refers to Jesus, only Justice. Anyway I loved this video and topic great info. God bless everyone, *JESUS IS KING!* ❤️🙏📖

Are action figures good?. I saw somewhere buying an action figure of something that’s fictional is idolatry. I’m concerned I would an answer because I appreciate a lot of fiction. (Star Wars, Transformers, Marvel, Dc, and movies. Like I appreciate the character of Optimus Prime, Vader, Spider-Man, Batman and have started buying a figure to celebrate my appreciation of my favorite characters. I don’t buy everything I see. I don’t play with these things but my collection revolves around display and posing. That’s my situation I just would love ur answer because I’ve heard the extreme of the other side. Like it’s not a “gotta catch me all point of view” but rather like example I love transformers and enjoy characters of both autobots and deceptions so I have started buying characters from both sides. I put them together in a nice individual pose that reflects that character and when I walk by it I take it in and say to myself that feels right, a good representation of I know is FICTIONAL. So yeah I know it’s a long comment I’m sorry for that but its very rare I see someone on the internet I relate to as a person of faith and nerditry.

Great question! I think that anyone claiming that action figures are LITERAL idols in the Old Testament sense has a huge burden of proof to bear. Until then I would default toward freedom and say that collecting action figures is not inherently sinful and can even be God-honoring. That said, any form of collecting can become an "idol" in the metaphorical sense, where it becomes a part of our lives that is more important to us than it should be. And that would be what my video responds to. I hope that's helpful! -Paeter

Thanks so much for the question and for your honesty! I can relate to having all kinds of feelings about my hobbies. But what I have to remind myself is that the feelings of our hearts cannot be considered evidence. They can be something God uses to get us thinking and seeking truth, but the feelings of our hearts deceive us(Jeremiah 17:9), and can either lead us to pursue ungodly pleasures, or enslave ourselves to manmade laws that God does not want us to be burdened by. So I would suggest that, instead of being overly concerned about your feelings, you ask those Christians who know you best if they think that your hobbies have a tendency to interfere with higher priorities God has for us, like relationships or generosity. As I think I mention in this video, scripture leaves a place for us to enjoy material possessions. They can be a source of rest that our minds benefit from. But if we indulge in them to the point of them interfering with more important things, then they become a problem we should consider either removing or, I think more reasonably, simply placing restrictions on to get them under control. Those believers in your life who are gracious and submitting to God's word will be better positioned to help you sort through your particular situation, so I'd suggest talking to some of them as a next step. I hope that helps! Thank you again! -Paeter

@@christiangeekcentral There’s a long history about the relationship between Transformers and GoBots. I’ll divide it into multiple sections.
      *•Toy origins*
Both franchises were comprised of die cast transforming robot toys that originated in Japan. Tonka imported the Machine Robo toys from Bandai in 1983, and Hasbro imported toys from the Diaclone and Microchange lines by Takara a year later.
      *•Differences between the characterizations*
The toylines that Tonka and Hasbro imported from (Machine Robo and Diaclone/Microchange respectively) to become GoBots and Transformers had extreme differences in how the characters were portrayed from their Japanese origins. For Machine Robo, the was only one faction of robots that turned into both real-world and futuristic vehicles that defended Earth from the Devil Invader aliens. When they were imported to become the GoBots, the single faction of robots was split into two warring parties. On Takara’s end of the spectrum, Diaclone focused on world-based vehicles that could be driven by small magnetized figures. The vehicles were not living robots, but rather transforming mecha that the drivers would control. Optimus Prime’s original Japanese name is “Battle Convoy.” The Microchange toys were meant to be tiny sentient robots that had the ability to disguise themselves as common household objects. The toy that would become Megatron was one of the 3 “Gun Robo” figures, which into a Walther P38. The other 2 moulds were a Browning and a .44 magnum revolver. When Hasbro imported Takara’s toys, the Microchange figures were left nearly identical to their Japanese counterparts, but the Diaclone vehicles had the drivers removed because Hasbro wanted the characters to be sentient robots instead of drivable mecha. Ever wonder why Ratchet and Ironhide’s toys never had heads? That’s because the place where their “heads” should be were intended to be seats for the drivers.
      *•The conflict begins*
Both toylines were incredibly successful during their initial run, but Transformers grew in popularity due to the brilliant character profiles written by Marvel Comics writer Bob Budiansky and the cartoon produced by Sunbow with animation provided by anime studio Toei. Tonka knew that they had some tough competition, and grew jealous of Hasbro’s overwhelming success. They decided that GoBots should have a cartoon of its own but the result was disappointing. It was made by Hanna Barbera, and like most of their cartoons, it was made on a low budget and failed to appeal to the target audience.

(2 Corinthians 9:7) So thinking in terms of what we "have to" give actually starts us out on the wrong foot. Rather than looking for a sort of minimum amount we should give in order to not feel guilty about entertainment purchases, we should be praying and thinking about the ways our money can support the ministry being done by members and staff of our local churches, and then other endeavors for God's kingdom, while also considering how we can live more simply and frugally. Not knowing anything about your financial situation, I'd highly recommend seeing if your church has any classes on viewing and handling money from a biblical perspective. That was such a huge help and blessing for my wife and I to go through early in our marriage and has allowed us to give consistently and gladly, and be more content with what we already have. In our last house I even covered my walls with them by tacking the bags holding them up in rows. I don't read comics near as often as I used to, but that time in my life will always be special to me! -Paeter
