  • Many of us have learned the hard way that too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. In this video, Fr. Mike shows us how to savor life’s delights without losing our ability to enjoy life. He gives palpable examples as he demonstrates how our favorite things-when enjoyed in the right quantity and for the right reasons-can give us more patience, temperance, freedom, and joy.
Learn more about the marshmallow experiment Fr. Mike mentions in this video here: bit.ly/1D3xDlQ.
Fr. Mike’s Ascension Presents videos are also available as podcasts at ascensionpresents.com/podcasts.

Once I read a phrase that said: "Only the disciplined are truly free, the undisciplined are slaves of moods, apetites and passions" and is sooo true!

Very true! This keeps getting reinforced through the generations especially todays generation, everyone's looking for a routine, exercise a focus and a discipline because without those things they are realising there is an absolute disconnect. You start to feel overwhelmed instead of in control and alert.

Mike's friendly face and seeing him discuss this makes me realize I'm being a bit hard on myself and to view it more scientifically, if that makes any sense. More confidence in God's grace, but with the conscientiousness to change what really needs to be changed nonetheless.

Only one deserves that Title, THAT IS THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN, CALLING ANOTHER MAN "FATHER" IS ABSOLUTE BLASPHEMY AND GOD WILL JUDGE IF YOU DON'T REPENT FROM IT, the pope is an example of this, you Catholics call him "the holy father" and eventually he's going to call himself "God", read your Bible's people and have your eyes opened to the truth! Revelation 13:6 - And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven

I am addicted to gluttony. I eat to comfort myself, I use screens constantly. It's terrible. I've been trying for years to stop. I'm wasting my healthiest and prettiest years (25 yo girl here), and I hate it! My childhood was pretty bad and I think that's why I do it. To comfort myself from the pain of my past.

@@salome3354 Blast from the past. Thanks for bringing me back to this. I'm way better for many reasons, a big one being therapy. But my screen addiction is majorly reduced after I spent 7 months with a flip phone, and since then a conscious effort to be mindful of my screen time. My overeating has gotten a lot better just with time, patience, and not forcing myself to do things but taking gentle, easy, baby steps. Cutting added sugar almost out of my diet has helped even more. I guess what I've most found for me personally is when I try to change all at once or force it, I pendulum swing back in the other direction. A lot of slow, gentle change and self-love has really made me happy. And getting a little older has freed me from worrying about being pretty, which feels almost childish now. I like my body more now than ever, and barely wear makeup. It's nice. I'm in a good place. It's taken me a good 7-8 years of really working on myself, and even though it was often hard I am so glad I persevered. Thanks again, stranger. This was nice to revisit.

This could not have been uploaded at a better time for me!
    1. I had quit Facebook (something I was HEAVILY addicted to) two years ago, but had been contemplating going back on. I kept trying to answer the "why do I feel as though I need this again?" and coming up blank, stood undecided. You just gave me my answer--I don't, so I won't.
    2. I have been withdrawing myself from over consuming food&beverage in general. I had stopped drinking coffee last summer, worked out, reduced portions, etc. and lost 20 pounds....only to gain it all back this past winter. I knew I needed to lose the weight(and some), but I never completely saw it from a spiritual standpoint. Thank you for pointing out that by saying no now, I'm saying yes to something for God in the process. I'm allowing God to take control of more of my life(because I am human, and forget that in certain areas).
Thank you for not only applying this to food(as most have done), but also overconsumption of things many struggle with.
    Blessings to you, Father!

I just finished my lunch and was satisfied. Out of gluttony...I went to search for junk food I had bought last week. thankfully someone had thrown it away, so I returned sheepishly to my desk LOL.
The crazy thing is that as I was walking to search for it , I literally was asking myself “why are you doing this? You don’t want this “. I was avoiding myself and avoiding the conversation I know I need to have with God about discipline , prayer ...so many things he has put on my heart that I have drowned out with eating and TV and googling. As I walked back to my desk, I actually prayed to Jesus to help me gain control because I have been out of control lately...no discipline whatsoever !
Coming across this video at this time has strengthened my resolve. I am so convicted right now ! Any patron saints for overcoming gluttony??
Thank you Father, your videos are truly a blessing.

I have lost at least 63 lb on Weigh Down. It is a scripture based weight loss program, but not Catholic. You eat what you crave in a portion of 1/3 of what you used to eat, but only after your stomach growls. Eating what you crave is necessary for the program to work. After I lose another 29 lbs. I will be free of the addiction and be able to perhaps find alternatives, but eating 1/3 the food in a day is already eating far less bad foods. But I also need to add the good foods when I am able to eat small portions when I am truly hungry and will not still eat the bad foods on top of that because I can not control my cravings.

Father, I'm a 64 year old Roman Catholic, baptised as a baby, communion, confirmation, yada ect. But I stopped going to church and forgot about my faith until about age 27. For some mystic reason that I won't bore everybody here, I came back to our faith in a very bombastic way. I went to prayer groups and read books about St. Thomas Aquinas. I lived the life of a Roman Catholic until about 10 years ago, when my family became diverse, kids left the home nest, and my wife and I stopped communicating.
My point is that I never really left my faith, but I didn't stay true to is as well. I find your RUclips video's are bringing me back to my faith. I don't know If I'll ever be the same young man I was, full of Godful joy, but you are a fresh beginning for me and a place for me to start again. I'm so glad you are here for us.
MY second POINT: I get the feeling that my local church priest's are getting burned out. I also think that the differences from Pope Francis from our prior Pope Bennidict, is confusing many people. One of my local churches is advertising that they accept all people. (That is good). But they give communion to the Gay. lesbian, bisexual group, trans-sexual minority, which gives me a great problem.
I understand that we are all sinners and deserve "forgiveness" if we ask for it. I am a sinner and commit the same sins all the time. I must go to confession because of my weakness. But at least I acknowledge my "conduct" as a sin. I try to refrain from doing it, but It seems like Gluttony, as you have explained very well, has gotten the better of me.
My issue is that one of my churches gives communion to people who do not acknowledge their conduct is a sin. In other words, they are not asking for foregiveness because they do not believe their conduct is sinful. The part that disturbs me is that the Church continues to allow communion to this group, despite the fact that they will not acknowledge their conduct as Sinfull.
In other words, it is one thing to look at bad things on the internet, admit they are bad things, and ask for forgiveness. But it is another thing to say: I continue to have sex, outside the sacrement of marriage with a same sex partner, I refuse to admit it's a sin, and I expect the church to continue to allow me and my same sex partner to have communion.
It has always been a sin in the Catholic Church to have sex outside of the Man/woman marrital relationship. But this Fransciscan R.C. Church allows this conduct, doesn't do try to stop it, and allows communion without forgiveness. It appears this R.C. Church is accepting the modern belief that same sex, non marital sex, is not a sin. It allows communion without the need for confession.
I personally deprive myself of communion when I go off the beaten path and maybe commit the sin of watching something on the internet forbidden by the Church. Isn't this hipocracy? If gay people love the lord and want to receive communion, shouldn't they at least have to admit that their conduct is contrary to Catholic teachings? If they ask for forgiveness and truly try to avoid the sin of sex, outside of man/woman marriage, I would have no problem with them receiving the sacrements. But if they take the position that their conduct is "not a sin' to begin with, does the Church have the right to give communion to them? Are the priests committing a sin for aiding and abetting in assisting in their sins?
I'm too old to care about what others think about me by asking these questions. But its been an issue with me for many years. I wish you would do a video about this. I'm sure I'm going to be accused of being the "sinner" here for being intolerant, but I'm going by the Church's history and rules of what is and is not sinful. I'm not making up the list of sins, I'm just acknowledging what the Church has always said is wrong.
    Sincerely, DPA
BTW, Please forgive my typos. I'm sure there are many.

The best way to avoid yourselves from overeating snacks is to NOT buy them. When you lack control in the kitchen, create control in the grocery store. This is not weakness, it is about finding your where your strength is.
I cut out almost all snacks buy only allowing myself to buy one bag of chips or 1 chocolate bar a week. It worked for me and maybe it will work for others too :).

Father Mike I just find your channel, I was looking up videos on the gluttony spirit & I've come across your video & what a great timing I am currently overcoming the gluttony spirit, we all pay a price in this world for whatever we do or done, we all have to pay a price one way or another for being rebellious its its like it's a punishment I'd say, sometimes its a punishment by mankind & sometimes its a punishment naturally by god, I had to pay the price for being gluttonous which leads me to be obese & having health problems, that's the price I had to pay, now I am healing taking good care of my health, eating healthier, making better decisions, working out, and knowing my limits, I'm overcoming the spirit & the sin for being gluttonous.💪🙌

I'm a stress eater and turn to junk food whenever I'm sad or depressed and sometimes reject something (food mainly) just because it's not upto whatever I was expecting. I'm also heavily addicted to the phone and I just knew I need to stop somewhere and think about these addictions. Just then, this video appeared! Praise the Lord! Also bleed Fr. Mike for all his work 🙏🏼

I feel like, fasting and cleansing yourself and this topic of gluttony are extremely related; in the sense of fasting is a way of forcing yourself and placing yourself in control of a certain matter where you want to not be "enslaved" by it and more of a free person and enforcing that statement that you are free, which father Mike mentions are the end.

I say NO to eating sometimes, because even though I get hungry, I know that maintaining my correct athletic weight, I am able to get around more easily, climb steps, run, etc., and It's a joyful thing. then I have a meal, and I have more energy to go play sports.

I'm a snacker, and giving up snacks during Lent is hard. But I am appreciating food much more, I find. I also binge tv shows, and I had not considered this to be gluttony, so I thank you, Father, for pointing this out, and I will cease this also. Once again, Father Mike, you get right to the heart of the matter. Bless you.

I am not a Catholic, but as a believer, I appreciate your videos, and your willingness to take a biblical stance on subjects that are not always “OK” to talk about these days. This is one of them that I personally struggle with, and it’s hard to find support to kick it when everyone is offended by the idea that obesity is not a healthy body type. Thank you for standing up and explaining not only the Word, but also the reason that it is beneficial to us.

I work from home, can decide my own hours, now live by myself, and due to Covid don't go out much. So for me the temptation is to eat too late at night + TV. I do not have a weight problem, but I am 'older' and eating too soon before bed often bothers my stomach. Listening to Father Mike, and realizing others also have this "WHEN" problem gives me a little strength. Father Michael videos help me think straight ! Thank you !

    • @martinkent333

A born again Christian? If you joined the Roman Catholic Church the sky is the limit! The Vatican Bank washes money for the mob and the priests raped two hundred thousand children and covered it up. Being a protestant is dull dull dull. Being a Roman Catholic means your parish will lose it's church to sex lawsuits, which is really really exciting. Think about it - a life of dullness or a life of crime?

  • @soniczforever5470

Thank you Father Mike for your video. I appreciate this when I need some inner strength. I am skipping one meal today to control the weight, I am too about food and I think today was a sign to stop overeating. I was a glutton-literally and now the weight has damaged my bones. I gained weight today so I am fasting, not a punishment IMO but to protect who I want to be. Able to move well. My bones are far too weak to withstand an extra ounce. I I accept I was too greedy but I wont destroy my health. I was around influences telling me to eat fattening unhealthy food. I tried to spend this day taking care of my body rather than harming it.
