😭 Thanks for the tips. Whenever I overflow my maker, I usually sob for a while and then use my tears to wipe up the spill. I guess the saltiness helps, but I’m not sure. Thanks for a great channel!
I have been in the habit of immediately after using mine, unplugging it and spritz the outside with a spritz of water. I also take a paper towel folded in the size of the cooker, spritz it and put inside the cooker. When I have finished my sandwich, it all wipes off easily. If not, spritz and plug in, and repeat towel cleaning. I use a *retired* toothbrush to remove stubborn parts.
It is worth noting that using a detergent cleaner on a waffle plate is never recommended ruclips.net/user/postUgkxUfphIgghPSpAXNq6OG2WRYsFVqylcqMn though people who don't understand about kitchen hygiene won't understand that a stiff brush is all that is necessary to clean the inside of the unit. Let it cool slightly but still perform the cleaning while it's warm. I used to have a Black and Decker unit that I just loved, and was concerned when we had to replace it that I might not find one that I like just as much. This one does it for me.
Learned about these little waffle irons from you this morning, bought one, made chaffles, learned about cleaning these little waffle irons from you tonight! A good day’s work. ;)
Opened up a Dash Mini to have a good look at that "cheese juice" hole. One screw, no prob. The hole is only for a small section inside. Most c-j would run out of the 5 other larger openings around the base. If liquid is dripping out of the base it may be worth opening it up to check if any debris is inside. Of course not plugged in and do when cool to the touch. The Dash Minis (2) arrived 2 days ago. Had to repurpose the bakers rack, it's now a waffle maker station. The Dash Minis, a waffle boat maker, a larger round maker, and expecting a churro/empanada maker this week (much like the corn dog maker, but with two sets of plates), and the grinder. My Dash mini was just delivered, so before I start making chaffles I have to wash it. So I naturally came to see how you address the subject. Thanks for the tips.
Amazing how you took all those years in corporate training and re-invented yourself, got healthy, and are passing that story on with keto and cooking videos. So much more fun and far-reaching. Excellent delivery and fun to watch. Congratulations! Glad I found your channel.
I put my mini on a paper towel on the counter so if it leaks doesn't get everywhere. When I'm done as soon as I unplug it I put a wet paper towel on The Griddle and close it. After about an hour I come back and take the wet paper towel and clean in between all the lines and then take a dry towel and do the same. As for anything that might overflow and gets stuck on the outside a scrubby sponge works great to get that all off. But I didn't know about the toothpick in the hole on the bottom. Thanks for sharing that. I also like the brush idea
This is an awesome video😉 I don’t have a dash, just a regular 4 square waffle maker. I have an old stained dishtowel that I dedicate to cleaning my waffle maker and Forman grill. As soon as I’m done using either, I wet the towel, ring out excess water, fold it to fit. Place it inside and close the lid. All the steam cleans so well. The inside of both is Teflon, so I can’t scrub them. After it cools a bit I dry it with a dry cloth. I hope this helps those folks like me who don’t have a dash. You’re killing it Steve! Awaiting part 2 of your transformation. Blessings and much love to you!
Early on I watched a youtuber post some chaffle stuff and as an aside she showed how she took care of clean up. (If I could find it, I'd post the link, but couldn't) Anyway, she put damp paper towel under and folded up into grill while still hot. The steam loosened everything. I've been doing it ever since. Only, I set my Dash's on damp paper towels to begin, (this catches any spills and keeps the drain hole from greasing up counter... then when finished cooking, I fold front of paper towels into grill (unplugged of course) and clean other stuff while steam softens any spillage. The paper towel is nearly dry when I go to finish cleaning and just use them to finish a wipe down. Occasionally, I'll do more complete cleaning as you describe in your video. Great video by the way... (love the clamps and gonna get some)
I would love a premium version of the Dash Minis with removable plates, for easier cleaning. I find it to be a huge pain to spend 5-10 minutes washing just one of them. I'd easily pay twice as much for one of those. It's still only like 20-25 dollars.
Hey Steve, yep, I use all of those methods, however I didn't realize that tidbit about the little screw on the bottom. It is what it is, small price to pop at ANS cleaning after each use is very helpful, as well as using the "no-spill" and if I want a smaller size I merely fill the middle of each section. Thanks Steve
Here’s a tip. After you’re done cooking your chaffle and remove it, put a soaking wet paper towel in the chaffle maker and close the lid. Unplugged of course. When it’s cool enough to handle, you can just wipe it out.
Love that you took time out to show us this. I was wondering how I would clean it and there you were with a video. And thank you so much for all the videos you made for us to watch. I just got my machine yesterday. I’ve already watched pretty much all of yours.
This was great. I have stayed away from the dash mini's because of this issue. I ended up getting a Belgium Iron that has removable plates for dish washer clean up.
@Serious Keto An easy way to clean these appliances is to mix plain flour with water and run it in a cycle. It will pick up the oil and brown bits. When it cools just feed it to the birds.
Less batter is always better. It’s a learning experience. I always run my waffle maker (each side holding the cord to the side) under very hot water and turn it upside down on doubled paper towels to dry. Any seams can be picked out with a toothpick.
I agree -- batter control is the best answer. Nine times out of ten, I guess the batter amount correctly. Periodically, though, I get that recipe that winds up expanding more than I thought and it oozes out.
This is perfect and just what I was looking for. My Dash waffle maker needs cleaning and I didn't know what to do until I Googled how to clean...and your video popped up. It may not be exciting, but excitement is not always necessary - just information and patience you show in teaching how to do this necessary chore. I was wiping mine off but that does not clean it. Thank you so much for a needed video. I'm saving and sharing it! Also SUBSCRIBED!
This was extremely helpful. I get frustrated with not being able to get mine clean. I'm ordering the products you suggested--thanx, Steve!! This was needed.
I just received my Dash No Mess Waffle Maker from Amazon Warehouse. I frequently buy returned items from Amazon, taking advantage of the cheaper price. Today, the product came used with waffle residue and oil still in the crevices. Ewww! After I cleaned it, I noticed your post. I cleaned mine as you did yours, but I then plugged in the item to help burn off any unseen residue from the previous owner. Thank you for your posts and yummy recipes.
Donna Hamstra, I paid about $28. Once I discovered Chaffles, the tiny personal waffle maker was too small and time consuming for me. Most of the recipes I have been making said it would make 2 chaffles, but would really make 3-4. With this new item, I hope to spend less time in the kitchen and maybe make double batches and freeze what I don’t eat. www.amazon.com/DASH-No-Drip-Belgian-Waffle-Maker/dp/B07BTR47GM
Very practical video! I just used my Dash waffle maker for the first time today and had two questions that you answered: Do I need to oil it before use? And, how do I clean it? Thx for your excellent videos!
I use 2 paper towels folded in a chaffle sized stack, get it wet and put it in there, close it and slowly pull it out (careful - hot). Then use tongs and grab that hot damp paper towel and use it to wipe down the outside.
I use a sponge-foam paintbrush with hot water to clean the grooves on my chaffle makers. The angled tips get down in there and lets you give it a scrub. They only cost a couple of bucks for a bag of 'em, so when it shows any wear, I just toss it.
For us, once we are done we unplug and place wet paper towel inside and close the lid. The steam cleans it out nicely, once cool we just wipe it off, easy peasy. Quick tip, just use a cookie scoop for perfect amount and place a piece of parchment paper under when cooking for easy cleanup.
Also, I agree that a "disher" (cookie scoop) is a great tool for consistent portions. However, I find that some recipes (especially with whey protein isolate and/or baking powder) can expand at a rate faster than they cook/set, resulting in some ooze.
Steve Steve Steve...only you can make cleaning appliances entertaining and educational. Thx for the no non stick spray tip/reminder. That stuff is not good for non-stick cooking surfaces.
I use a misto to spray olive oil on right before pouring the batter. I've found that I don't really need to clean the dash mini afterwards, just wipe the excess oil up with a paper towel when it's cooled down.
Those Mistos are cool. I don't spray mine, and the only time clean-up is really an issue is when I overfill (which happens more often when I'm experimenting with a new recipe).
I always work on a restaurant tray. Voila! l cooking items are transported to sink at the same time after cooking. Wash items and turn upside down on same tray. Or, load them directly into the dishwasher after rinse. I have been doing this for years. Now, my children observe the same protocol.
Easiest thing to do is to wet a paper towel an actual towel and press it in the waffle maker. The steam cleans it all up then the hot towel can clean the outside quickly. This is what we did when I worked in restaurants and it takes less than a minute.
You know what would be a good video: Keto Pantry Basics - what are the core ingredients that you’d recommend always having at hand. Anyways, nice channel and thanks for all the helpful cont.
I just keep mine dirty. The heat will sterilize the plates next time is used. It’s stored in a plastic bag to collect any crusts that falls off. Keto requires a lot of time prepping and cooking from scratch. This chore for me is easy to ignore.
Hey Steve just wanted to thank you for the heads up on Perfect Keto. I ordered for the first time...that chocolate collagen is the best. I am anxiously awaiting my second shipment from them...
I just got my first (Black Friday) order yesterday. Today, I'll be getting my Cyber Monday order. I think I wound up ordering every flavor of their keto bars, so I'll be doing a review of those within the next week or so.
I've also found that if you let it get crusty, you can just put a wet paper towel in it, close it, and run it briefly to let the steam loosen the crusties.
you should make an ASMR version of this video next time chaffles comes back into popularity. I was totally just enjoying the scrubbing sounds. Very soothing. Your gentle voice also went nicely with it though.
So i just bought the dash mini, have used it a few times, and for some reason im getting a funny taste... no matter what ingredients i use, they all taste the same ... do these have to be seasoned first?
@@SeriousKeto no i dont, i do not believe in no stick sprays unless its absolutely necessary!!! Im thinking maybe i just need to use it a few more times to season it??
A number of comments have suggested putting a wet paper towel inside it while it is still plugged in to steam off the gunk. Usually, my issue on the inside is oil (if I'm using a cheese like cheddar) and crusties on the outside and rim (if I have have an overflow issue).
My Dash sticks badly at this point without olive oil spray, probably from using soap to clean it. I've only been making the white bread recipe, perhaps it wouldn't stick for a regular Chaffle.
I'm not sure if the soap removes any of the non-stick characteristics of the waffle maker. I just know that: 1) I never use spray, 2) I never clean it with soap, and 3) I always cook until there's just barely a whisp of steam coming out of the waffle maker. That combo has worked well for me. Perhaps, though, your on to something with trying a chaffle that would release some grease (aka "cheese juice") and see if that "renews" the non-stick surface...
I took mine all the way apart. Found lots of cheese juice inside the bottom under the grid. The hole for cleaning it isn't in the exact center so there was a build up of juice. There's no way to stop it as they are not sealed. Maybe a more expensive one is sealed but the dollar store one isn't. I just started making smaller chaffles.
Yeah, if you're making lots of cheese based waffles/chaffles, it's worth unscrewing the bottom (I think it's just 3 small screws) to clean out the guts every so often.
Only been watching a couple weeks and Always get good info. Very helpful. Bought 3 Dash appliances so far after watching you demonstrate and review them. Very happy with them all so far. I may have missed it, but do you have a recommendation for warming chaffles so they crisp up again?
Thanks, Steve I love my dash mini but I hate cleaning it. I actually bought the dash mini with the removable plates today at Costco so I can just throw them in the dishwasher.
@@SeriousKeto found the links. Also liked the cable clamp but the one you used in the video was black. I like black for black cords. Was it another brand. Thanks.
I have a GRAEF Matt finish waffle maker which is badly burnt . It's difficult to clean also because the ridges are triangular rather than square or rectangular. Can anyone help me with suggestions to clean the stubbornly stuck stuff ?
Funny I was wondering about that subject earlier today and I just inadvertently came across this video as I was going thru channels I subscribe to. Thanks for the help on the matter.
I'm not sure if I mention it in this video, but there are 3 small screws in the base of this unit that can be remove to get inside and wipe out any grease or other gunk.
Hi Steve, great video. I wanted to ask you about whey protein isolate (seeing as how you mentioned it). I found out this week that apparently it sends insulin sky high. !!!. Wondering what your thoughts are on the subject please. I use it in a couple recipes that I love, so feel sad to have to stop using it. thank you.
I generally choose not to go down a rabbit hole like this, but a cursory search on Google should eliminate your concerns about this. The study I saw referenced in the handful of article I saw supporting this claim was done on very small samples -- 14 to 22 subjects. One study was only on post-menopausal women. Another was on just on subjects with type 2 diabetes. Also, I could find no reference to the type of whey protein used (concentrate vs isolate). Isolate is lower carb, if that matters. In terms of articles, this one is probably the clearest on the subject: thestrongkitchen.com/blog/post/insulin-response-it-comes-from-eating-protein-too
@@SeriousKeto thank you. I have been googling, but as usual, coming up with conflicting info, so I thought I would ask you. I will look at the link you sent, thanks a lot. Im even trying to find the manufacturer of the one I use, but cant even come up with that.... ha ha. More investigating tomorrow. thanks again Steve and keep up your wonderful videos.
Also, if this were really the case, you'd think that this info would be far more widely propagated -- and it would send MASSIVE shockwaves through the entire low carb community. I'm far from an expert on the subject of insulin -- but I can tell you that I test my ketones every day and no recipe that I present has ever kicked me out of keto (including the ones with whey protein). I'm also not a type-1 or type-2 diabetic, so I'll have a different insulin response than those folks.
Also, I need to learn to not look at the RUclips comments on my phone when I wake up in the middle of the night, as I feel compelled to respond. Time to go back to bed. 😴🛌
I had issues with sticking so I had to use a nonstick spray. Now it smells disgusting every time I heat it up because I’m sure the spray seeped inside. It still works but it’s such a bummer on a fairly new purchase.
No, I'd never submerge something electronic in soapy water. I just dunk the brush in it. And the brush has nylon bristles, so it won't damage the coating.
If you’re using cheese in it, it can get inside the unit. There are 3 small screws in the bottom you can remove to get any fat that might collect inside.
I just had to clean a waffle maker I picked up at a thrift store. It had lots of blacened and rancid fat buildup all over it. What a pain! right now I'm making chocolate sourdough waffles in it.
There are some other good tips in the comments that are worth trying too -- like steaming the crud off with a wet paper towel and using a foam wedge paint brush to clean between the grooves. I haven't tried those methods yet though...
😭 Thanks for the tips. Whenever I overflow my maker, I usually sob for a while and then use my tears to wipe up the spill. I guess the saltiness helps, but I’m not sure. Thanks for a great channel!

I feel inspired to properly clean my waffle maker now :D haha
So i just bought the dash mini, have used it a few times, and for some reason im getting a funny taste... no matter what ingredients i use, they all taste the same ... do these have to be seasoned first?
I have not had that issue. Very strange.... Do you use any sort of non-stick spray?
@@SeriousKeto no i dont, i do not believe in no stick sprays unless its absolutely necessary!!! Im thinking maybe i just need to use it a few more times to season it??
Little Moe I’d try some recipes with fattier cheeses (like cheddar) and see if the oils it releases “seasons” your waffle maker. Good luck.
Great video. VERY helpful, at least to me and I thank you for it. Happy New Year and manifold blessings to you!
Thank you so much for sharing this! We have been trying to figure out the best way to clean this bad boy.
A number of comments have suggested putting a wet paper towel inside it while it is still plugged in to steam off the gunk. Usually, my issue on the inside is oil (if I'm using a cheese like cheddar) and crusties on the outside and rim (if I have have an overflow issue).
Great job! And I really like your tee shirt 😀👍
Love to watch u clean your cast iron pans
I've actually already filmed some footage for that. 😉
When I'm done washing it and the next day I use it it sticks on my chaffle and it leaves a mess 😤 does this happen to any one?
This is PERFECT! Thank you, Steve!
Air fryer
Thanks, but I don’t have an air fryer. I discovered putting them in the microwave a few seconds crisps them just fine
Thanks, Steve I love my dash mini but I hate cleaning it. I actually bought the dash mini with the removable plates today at Costco so I can just throw them in the dishwasher.
I didn’t know such a thing existed (and I was just at Costco this morning). I’ll definitely look for it. Thanks for the heads up.
Love the video. How can I find the red hand held brushes? Also the cable clamps. Thanks you said you would send links but didn’t see them
Linked in the video description.
@@SeriousKeto found the links. Also liked the cable clamp but the one you used in the video was black. I like black for black cords. Was it another brand. Thanks.
@@dfield1018 No, I bought that directly from the cable clamp website. You'd need to do a Google search on that.
New to Keto and chaffles. This was helpful! Thank you !! Loving your channel!❤️
Tysm
The dishwasher works good too. But only one time for some reason.
This was extremely helpful! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this video . Now I can clean my waffle maker without using any chemicals.
I'm not sure if I mention it in this video, but there are 3 small screws in the base of this unit that can be remove to get inside and wipe out any grease or other gunk.
Is spraying the hot surfaces after cooking with a vinegar water mix a bad thing?
I don't see why it would be
I have that same faucet, that I installed about 5 years ago.
Probably about the same time I installed mine. 🙂
Thanks Steve, that's basically what I do too.
I warm mine up for a few seconds then switch off. If it’s warm it cleans much better
@@SeriousKeto ha ha...sorry...Im in Sydney, Australia. Happy sleeping....TURN YOUR PHONE OFF !!! but thank you.
Been looking forward to this :) Thank you.
I've looked on Amazon for the rathchet cable clamps but am not sure what size to purchase. Can you help me with this? Thank you.
I’d recommend ordering directly from cableclamp.com and get the 16 pack of small Cable Clamp Pro.
Toothbrushes work wonders on these. :)
I had issues with sticking so I had to use a nonstick spray. Now it smells disgusting every time I heat it up because I’m sure the spray seeped inside. It still works but it’s such a bummer on a fairly new purchase.
There are 2-3 small screws on the bottom you can remove to clean out the “guts” of the Dash Mini.
Do you soak the Dash in the soapy water? What is the soapy water for? Also, doesn't the brush damage the non-stick coating?
No, I'd never submerge something electronic in soapy water. I just dunk the brush in it. And the brush has nylon bristles, so it won't damage the coating.
Why we cannot use soap?
Thanks for doing this video I just used my waffle maker for the first time
If you’re using cheese in it, it can get inside the unit. There are 3 small screws in the bottom you can remove to get any fat that might collect inside.
@@SeriousKeto I didn't use cheese just four blueberries
I just had to clean a waffle maker I picked up at a thrift store. It had lots of blacened and rancid fat buildup all over it. What a pain! right now I'm making chocolate sourdough waffles in it.
where is the link to the brushes you show in the video?
In the description
Thank you for this video. You are terrific. 😁
There are some other good tips in the comments that are worth trying too -- like steaming the crud off with a wet paper towel and using a foam wedge paint brush to clean between the grooves. I haven't tried those methods yet though...
