I'm still here. This is one of my favorite PT songs (though that list is rather large) and one that I find myself listening to multiple times in a row each time I listen. For years, whenever I am on long car trips, I've listened to this album front to back at least once, usually at dusk when I'm on a quieter stretch of road. It always gave me a cinematic vibe and feels like I'm hearing the soundtrack to a movie I am in. I only later found out Steven Wilson originally wrote a lot of these songs as part of a soundtrack for a film project that didn't get funding, so it made perfect sense.
I’m still here. I’ll have to check these guys out some more, this was a pretty cool introduction to PT. Love the breakdown of the musical intricacies, would never have caught some of the things you mentioned
I love how Steven Wilson introduces the song with that first tasty riff an begins a kind of start & stop vocal style which sounds so cool. I love that crushing rhythmic pattern that segways into a hauntingly beautiful passage with the softly sung vocals, the piano/ keyboards, and the acoustic guitar playing lightly underneath. Such an elegantly written song that I can just listen to over & over. I'm still here.😊❤🎶🎸
Literally just discovered this song. PT has been one of my top 3 bands since like 2021 but this one somehow flew under my radar until like a week or two ago. Nice timing lol
That quickly oscillating synth line deep in the mix adds such contrasting texture to the smooth tones that come in the section right afterwards. That sonic contrast is so important to create huge impact on the transitions. Really a lovely detail.
Love your Steven Wilson/Porcupine Tree reactions! I'm a sucker for his use of harmonization. Mellotron Scratch (Porcupine Tree) is a prime example as it really brings it into the forefront. The multiple layers of harmony are just gorgeous. The Same Asylum As Before (Steven Wilson) is an all-around favorite as well. Thank you so much, Geebz!!!
This is my favorite song and I love porcupine tree ❤so glad to see your reaction 😮❤ more songs like lightbulb sun and ❤blackened eyes that song is going to blow your mind 😂❤
I'm still here! Great review as always. Another example of PT creating what sounds like a simple riffy/melodic song but is actually full of interesting time changes and chord choices. Love it
If you like the main riff in this, you really need to listen to the live version from Arriving Somewhere. He adds an extra riff before the second chorus and it carries on from that riff you like.
When I was younger my dad played this album Deadwing in the car and I believe the very first PT song I heard was Shallow. Shortly after that I discovered the album Fear Of A Blank Planet and I was sold just amazing music. Steven Wilson is prog rock genius and we must protect him at all costs lol
Steven Wilson is an incredible artist, but his engineering really stands out IMO. Porcupine Tree on it's own sounds amazing, but he's done some legendary other things also. The albums he produced for Opeth are all simply stunning to listen to for example. Very clean production but they still retain so much raw vibe and emotion from the artists that you can't help but fall deeply into them. Those albums wouldn't be near as powerful as they are without Steven's touch.
One of my favorite bands! Great three-track special from the Lightbulb Sun album: 1. shesmovedon 2. Last Chance To Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled 3. The Rest Will Flow Hope to hear you dig into it someday! Peace!
Gavin Harrison, to give the best drummer on the planet his due name-check. An absolute beast of a player, apart from his PT work, some of his drum clinic stuff is just magnificent. He's played for so many great artists and bands, including Pineapple Thief and King Crimson.
Fun Fact : Steven Wilson hates the term Progressive rock, because he feels like it has pinned him to a smaller audience/fan base when he wants to reach out to more people. He wants the recognition that Bowie, Prince and Radiohead has had over the years. He is my favorite musician, but sometimes he seems bitter about that. Wish I could convey how much his music has meant to me since I found Porcupine Tree in the early 2000's.
Been a fan since 96, where i found them and check out the cds right on the spot in the local media store. They sounded much different back there, but the feeling and magic was the same. Been going ever since on multiply shows with PT, Blackfield and WIlsons solo project.
Hi Geebz, I love this one. As I was watching, I couldn’t help think about an album that was in the soundtrack of my life. The band is Cop Shoot Cop and the album was “Release” I think it’s perfect for these twice baked reactions. I don’t like some of the songs but the songs I like are epic. Just listen to the album…😊
Still here, always. PT is a personal fave. Great song and reaction! Kinda painful to see Blackest Eyes sitting there unplayed through the whole video lol. I love that song to an irrational degree. True of lots of their stuff, though!
Thankyou Geebz! I am soooo over every reaction raving on about "they should like this or that" - NOONE sounds like Porcupine Tree and NOONE sounds like Steven Wilson. This human obsession and need I expect to try and demonstrate how knowledgeable we are by trotting out half a dozen other "influences" is really tiring and oh so dirivative. Thankyou for the acknowledgement of same and your excellent detailed assessment of composition, arrangement and production. Would love to hear you react to some of the less acknowledged masterpieces on his 2018 live DVD Home Invasion. Tracks like Song of I, or Vermillion Core from that show are mindblowing not just musically, but visually and artistically and I dont believe there is a single reaction on RUclips to either of those tracks. Would love you to be the first!
I loved your comments on the vocal production and harmony in Open Car. I'd love for you to give a listen to Normal from their Nil Recurring EP, its one of my favorites because of the almost round-like vocal part towards the end of the track.
Porcupine Tree quickly became one of my favorites after hearing them on the channel (I never heard anything from them before this, and have no idea how they aren't vastly more popular with what they put out!) This album is absolutely one of the best ones they put out, considering it has _Arriving Somewhere, but Not Here,_ and Open Car was a pleasant surprise the first time I heard it. That riff is like bringing the funk to the prog world! Such a clean melody to it, and the song is a nice short & sweet one off the record. Maybe some Steven Wilson is due on here after so long, eh Geebz?😉 On a side note, I was listening to Queens of the Stone Age the other day, and _Lullabies to Paralyze_ is still SUCH a fantastic album! I haven't listened to them in a while, and I swear I listened to my collection of theirs like 3 times over. Thanks for the great music again, Geebz! I'm still here, and keep on rocking!🤙🤘
One of my musical regrets is not knowing PT when they would come to the Festival d’Été de Québec every 2-3 years back then… PT is always so full of melancholy, maybe they should write about my regrets !!! Full disclosure, the ‘Twice Baked’ in the title had me thinking of something else!
I hope you can sometime give a chance to Beardfish, the song Roulete or Harmony from their first album are just too good. Even if you don't make a video, i just think that you will really like them.
this is the first song i heard and one i like most. I prefer the heavy riff based more simple style. I couldn't really get into Porcupine Tree overall though. I'm still here.
I'm a bit confused. When did you listen to this the first time? Was it on Patreon, so we didn't see it on RUclips? Is that what all of your Twice Baked sessions will be? Don't worry, I'm not complaining! Just want to understand what's going on.
Good question! I decided to reapproach the world of reactions by listening to the track first on my own and being able to pull certain details so that when I listen to it a second time and do the video, I can set folks off on slight details and go a little deeper in my own listening to bring out things that I find that I miss with the old way of doing first time reactions.
@@KeyOfGeebz OK that's super interesting! While I am a fan of first time reactions, I totally get how a second listen adds a lot of value for us, coming from someone with such a great ear for writing and production. Keep doing what you do Geebz
Classic noob mistake! For Porcupine Tree *ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS* go with the live version. For this one even more so than usual - there's a minute long section missing in the studio version, and no surprise, it's great.
my favorite band
Oh I love everything Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson ! Keep doing those, it's awesome :D
❤ love Porcupine Tree
(comment to help the algorithm)
The transition at the end though to The Start of Something Beautiful, one of my absolute favourites!
Weekend with no plans is one of the best kind of weekends ✌
The live version has an additional section in it. Love this song. I believe their live performances sound better than the album recordings.
I'm still here. This is one of my favorite PT songs (though that list is rather large) and one that I find myself listening to multiple times in a row each time I listen. The live versions of their songs are even better. Huge rabbit hole for you to discover, along with Steven's solo albums.
I'll never get enough of Steven Wilson or porcupine tree reactions :)

Thank you Geebz…..surfs up ⬆️
Literally just discovered this song. PT has been one of my top 3 bands since like 2021 but this one somehow flew under my radar until like a week or two ago.
Nice timing lol
You ought to start to listen to albums from beginning to end. To me that’s the best method to experience Porcupine Tree :)
How can you miss this song though? It's on the album. Do you just skip songs at random? That seems very odd.
crazy I was literally playing this on guitar as I stumbled on this
That quickly oscillating synth line deep in the mix adds such contrasting texture to the smooth tones that come in the section right afterwards. That sonic contrast is so important to create huge impact on the transitions. Really a lovely detail.

The actual chorus is just so beautifully done. Every aspect of it screams to my senses.
Still one of their best albums. Every track is great
The live version of this song is my fav. It’s so good
Thanks, I bow appreciate this song even more!
Great band!
This song steers carefully somewhere between tool and the beatles. I love it

His 5.1 mix for the porcupine tree albums are on another planet. Anesthetize in surround is divine !

next should be Harridan... love from Argentina
Amazing song and great analysis! Steven makes truly magical music.
In mourning-beyond thunder 🔥
First track off this album is my favorite. Deadwing! ❤
Yes!!!!!
Ahahah, normal-old school-power.... level Opeth 🤣🤣🤣❤
thx Geebz
my epic brain fart :D
Gavin Harrison also plays drums with The Pineapple Thief, another great band led by Bruce Soord.
My brother turned me on to these guys several years ago. This has been my favorite song by them.
Pre-chorus where the drummer hits the snare on beat 4... nice way to slow us down before delivering intensity at chorus! ❤
Still here :)

Ironically, he's also not interested in satisfying the fans of his popular rock songs and would rather make something different every time :P
Steven Wilson is really cocky with his persona, but maaaaan can he write great songs

Shallow is another great song.

Draw me a Line,Ithink I`m ,Crossing IT!,We have all been THERE,.Yo!
Man... You should've just carried on through to 'the start of something beautiful' such an amazing smooth transition... And an even better song
This song, Shesmoved on and Anethestize (which you've already listened to) are their best 3 songs imo
I’m still here!
this is the first song i heard and one i like most. I prefer the heavy riff based more simple style. I couldn't really get into Porcupine Tree overall though.
I'm still here.
Totally Linkin Park style.
But, still has the Steven Wilson's unique
Don’t know if you’ve listened to Queens of the Stoneage, but give a listen to The Evil Has Landed if you like a good hook.
Found about you when i was in arizona. I am now on the big island. Where are you? Wanna actually get a cup of coffee?

not a fan of the new format tbh.
Terrible song. Someone told me these guys were good. They lied smh
How does this guy like all the songs I loved and grew up with throughout the years 😵💫
