I am an old guy 77. I bought a new 2018 CX3 a few years back. The first two comments I am going to make about this little car are: 1- It is absolute fun to drive. Very athletic performance. Very responsive steering. Very comfortable driving position. It is a very sporty little car. 2 - Yes it is absolutely true that the rear seats in this little car are very cramped. The trunk/ boot is small, also true. However in my case my family is just two of us, my wife and myself. For the two of us it is just great. It took some time to learn how to make the best possible use of the space that is available, but I got there. I have one bad problem with this little car - but it is really a problem about me and not actually the car. I have a really bad hip joint and as a result getting into the car is difficult for me. Getting out is also a bit difficult but less so. In conclusion - I really love my little car. The joy of driving it goes a long way to making up for the hassle of getting in to the little brute. The one car in my personal history of cars I have owned that my MAZDA so much reminds me of was an MGTC that I had years ago. Oh yes, finally, no I have had no technical issues of an kind.
Very interesting perspective from an experienced driver. By the way, the MGTC was it an MGC 2 SEAT convertible from the 70's, based on the MGB with a better engine? Thanks a lot

It does look weird that you can see the paint on the inside of the door frame from the cabin though. That kind of spoils the look a bit. The dashboard layout is also really messy but i guess most small cars seem to be these days.
The steering wheel is 'depth adjustable'. If it's pushed all the way towards the front one could adjust the front seat further forward and create more legroom for the back seats. Just a thought.
Since the beginning Mazda said the CX3 was intended for single persons or young couples, in fact they move the 2nd row slightly forward to gain cargo space :S
I have this car. I live in a big city in Taiwan so it's ok that it is small. The cx 5 was a lot more money here and it only came with the 2.0 engine. Be warned it does have blind spots and the belt line is a little high. I will say it is fun to drive. No need to go fast in Taiwan as there are far too many cameras. I do believe it did well in crash tests but if you put adults in the back often, I would go for something bigger. I bought the Ceramic white.. Thanks for the video...
there are too many colors on the interior. The blue that shows when you are inside with the black and the white and then the red on the door handles is just too much.
Yeah way too much , it looks unfinished when you can see inside door paint from inside the car. The front seat backs are cheap and nasty too. They look plastic. Overall it's not too bad but i don't understand the point of fake leather stitching on a dash when the rest is plastic. It looks rather silly.
I was seriously considering one of these last year until I took a test drive and saw where the cup holders are. I hate that location. What I would like to see is a comparison to the Mazda 3 and the Subaru Crosstrek. From what I understand, this vehicle is built on the Mazda 2 platform even though it looks like a Mazda 3 sitting on a raised suspension. That's probably why the backseat is so cramped.
Maybe a MPG run? Reset the trip and do 50m or so on the highway and check it out. Also you have snow on the roads so a snowy test drive and let us know how good the awd keeps you from crashing
Gweeper64 Easy to get less. Sport mode or not, when you stomp the gas like my wife to get around, the car will aggressively down shift. Only thing Sport Mode does is to stay at lower gear for immediate response, useful in city like doing some fun driving.
I am a diehard Mazda fan. Protege and 3s are all I have had for 25 years. A year ago I bought a '17 civic hatchback. I just didnt like the new 3 styling. Yes, realized the civic is not a crossover... After I bought I noticed the CX3 and was bummed. I love the exterior styling and AWD. I am just now looking at the CX3s and I gotta say I am very disappointed in interior looks, size and lack of a turbo. This initial review just reaffirms I made the right choice.

This is the safest car on thr market ive seen 2 old man get hit by a truck going 80km an hour car went flying 30 feet the doors were barely bumped in windows werent broken, good car inexpensive
Not too crazy about the light colored interior, I would imagine it would begin to look grungy after a while.The red accents are cool though. How about a "power test" fully loaded with passengers, freeway on ramp/passing, and ascents on steep mountain roads?
Since you may be getting weather, why don't you make a grocery run for the emergency "snow day" stuff and see how it is in slightly inclement weather while getting your basic needs from the store? Most buyers are probably singles, so lets stop stressing about back seat knee room. It's really a 2 seater with hatch back convenience and 4 wheel drive... am I right? Passengers are not only annoying, but optional :P
In the video review can I see some action off-road maybe go into a couple feet-deep mud puddles see how well it kicks of those pesky puddles also to test out the traction on this thing.... Also if you don't mind could try going through a couple of big and nasty pot holes I'm trying to find out how well the suspension aswell the vibration of the whole vehicle those when in silent mode so please don't play any music while doing so.... Thank You cant wait.
Interesting that you can turn blind spot detection off. I wouldn't think someone would be driving and think that they don't want know if they're going to hit somebody if they change lanes.
- No center console - Little kid only back seat - Meh cargo area - Gets expensive quickly - Gutless if you have multiple bodies in the vehicle - 26'ish MPG Combined - Looks narrow inside - I agree Mazda needs to get rid of the Intellivision Infotainment system - The hud is not adjustable so if you are tall you won't even see it For that money I agree with Dave, get a CX-5.
It would be nice to see a review of it's highway passing speed, and what it is like to drive it up a steep mountain road if you were going to take it skiing. I looked at buying one last year, but was concerned that the engine was under powered.
I don't understand why they don't make it a little bigger to give a useful backseat and get rid of that silly armrest. It'd be better to have a real armrest that's also a storage compartment.
I've heard that the seats aren't comfortable for average size and above men. That it feels like you are sitting on top of the bolsters and the seat back is so narrow it feels like its cutting into your shoulder blades. Would like to know your opinion on that. Would also like to know your opinion on wind, engine and road noise as well as ride quality compared to other similar segment vehicles you have tested.

How would this do as a daily commuter vehicle? One person, the driver, 99% of the time; a passenger every now and then. I love the look of this. But it doesn't seem as practical as my current Honda Fit. The Fit has amazing space. This doesn't come close unfortunately.
G Baking nothing has changed as far as i know , i saw a 2016 in a dealer ship about a year ago to compare with 2017 nothins changed . maybe very little things that no one even realizes ! Still no back seat's arm rest , in my opinion dash still needs a refresh specially where dvd player is located , idont wanna say outdated but its not cool either + back seats are still cramped( at least ) for me as im 187 cm and i tried it and i became => :-| Hopefully they will release a facelift around November 2017 ! Like what they did for cx5
This is a Subcompact SUV. I would only recommend it to single people or young couples without kids that need AWD capability. It's a fun drive but definitely lacks utility compared to other cars in the segment

For $26,000? Come on. No spare tire either? Geez. The doors sounded a bit tinny too. The one major thing that keeps me from buying a Mazda is that they all are underpowered. I mean do they have anything that's rated over 200 bhp? It's a shame because they are great looking cars and have beautiful interiors. Also, I agree with you, I hate the infotainment screen just chillin in the middle of nowhere. Anyway, I think you should take it off road next. Keep up the good work. I love your stuff man.
It has spare tire under that "Hidden Compartment"/ I paid $24k with tax for Touring. Not sure why you would pay full price for ANY car. I'd pay $25k or lower for GT. Underpowered? What are you looking at? This is the least powerful 2.0L in Mazda lineup and still has more PEAK power than Honda HR-V. The car has a lot more mid range torque and HP that you actually use when going for acceleration. Not yet mentioning the responsive 6MT that down shifts as soon as you need power. But you must press on the accelerator hard enough to feel the "CLICK" on your right foot. That's when the full power is released. This car has no eco mode. Sport mode keeps the gear one step lower for quick city accelerations.
Worked for Mazda over the summer, wasn't a big fan of the car. Slow acceleration, little legroom in the rear, no heated steering wheel, no lumbar or power seats for that matter, no trajectory in the rear view camera, etc...
Not one of Mazda's better efforts, IMHO. Not enough room for a 5'11" guy to sit behind someone of the same height? Dealbreaker! And the trunk/cargo space leaves something to be desired, too, as do the cupholders and center armrest. I'd choose the H-RV or even the Encore/Trax. Or the Mazda3 hatch, which means no AWD. I'd skip the RV park, bring Melissa long for another regular test drive and let's hear her thoughts.
I own a cx9 and love Mazda... but if I owned this 3... I would wish I had a 5 or 9. It's too small for my liking but very cramped and for kids.... You never recovered from the cramped seats. You looked horrified. I understand...
I don't understand this car. The 2017 Kia Niro has 139 HP, 50 MPG, 6.8" of ground clearance same as the Rav4 and far more options and space than this. With CX3 has only 149 HP, what's even the point of buying this?
In my opinion it was a huge mistake for Mazda to produce this vehicle. They should have made it a little larger and based on the Mazda 3 but not quite as big as the CX5. Throw the 2.5 engine in it and with AWD it'd have sold a lot better. I am rarely one to complain about power but a CUV with this power is crazy. I test drove one and it wasnt too bad, but the same engine is in the MX5 and it gets to 60 in over 3 seconds faster. I went with a 2.0 Mazda 3 because it was cheaper, better mpg's, more rear passenger space, and more cargo w hatch. It was a no brainer.

Dave if you read this you can set the doors to all unlock when you push the button once. It can also unlock automatically when you walk away.

I like the look of the CX3 only problems are no adults can sit in back and you have to slam that accelerator when merging onto highway.

I hate cameras, get a plastic clear cover for your lic plate, or the special spray ; -)
Clear covers don't work on modern cameras and if you use a spray at least in Australia you will be busted by the cops.

yeah, the same as Crosstrek with Impreza, though backseat isn't that bad in Crosstrek.

I get 31 MPG on combined. Seen up to 36 MPG highway. AWD Touring running here in 6,000 ft elevation.

Have no issues with snow did awesome this year, and as far as MPG I get about 30 Mpg and great depends on your driving habits too

There is a spare tire open the trunk space again it's below that floor
Don't have to have the front seats all the way back if you're average height, seats further forward ample room in the back for passengers.

There IS Spare tire UNDER the Hidden Compartment in the hatch. Take them out and you get even MORE trunk space.
my cx-3 has only a bose subwoofer in there, no spare wheel whatsoever..

G Baking Not sure. I think 2017 can read road signs, has heated steering wheel and some suspension tuning.
G Baking Mazda has added a G-Vectoring control system. This eliminates most body roll while driving especially around corners.

I own a cx9 and love Mazda... but if I owned this 3... I would wish I had a 5 or 9. It's too small for my liking but very cramped and for kids.... You never recovered from the cramped seats. You looked horrified. I understand...
So at 6-4 and 325 lbs. I'm guessing this might not be a good car for me?

Kai Liu I think the Mazda 3 even has more room in the hatch, even though this is classified as an SUV.
That's because CX3 is based on Mazda2 chassis and CX5 on 3's and old CX7 on 6's.
Mazda 3s wheelbase is 2700mm wheras the CX-5 is also 2700mm. Mazda 2 has a wheelbase of 2492mm and the Mazda CX-3 a wheelbase of 2570mm.

I don't understand this car. The 2017 Kia Niro has 139 HP, 50 MPG, 6.8" of ground clearance same as the Rav4 and far more options and space than this. With CX3 has only 149 HP, what's even the point of buying this?

In my opinion it was a huge mistake for Mazda to produce this vehicle. They should have made it a little larger and based on the Mazda 3 but not quite as big as the CX5. Throw the 2.5 engine in it and with AWD it'd have sold a lot better. I am rarely one to complain about power but a CUV with this power is crazy. I test drove one and it wasnt too bad, but the same engine is in the MX5 and it gets to 60 in over 3 seconds faster. I went with a 2.0 Mazda 3 because it was cheaper, better mpg's, more rear passenger space, and more cargo w hatch. It was a no brainer.
So this looks like smaller than the Outlander Sport.
So I have to pay almost 28K to get a center armrest? And a cheap one to boot.

No manual in the US but I drive a 6sp manual here in Europe.
