How To Play the Guitar Part of "Seasons" by Chris Cornell

- I had many questions on the tuning of Seasons by Chris Cornell. The Open Strings are tuned D-A-D-A-A-D but with the Capo at the 3rd Fret it becomes an F5 tuning F-C-F-C-C-F.

Right now listening to this is the most I've ever wanted to learn guitar in my life.
Hope you decide to, it's nothing quite as beautiful as learning thkse songs you love.
Do it! You won't regret it. Best decision I ever made, been playing 30 years. This is a particularly good song for a beginner to learn, simple but elegantly arranged, lots to learn from this but not difficult with a little practice.
Do it dude.. This would actually be pretty easy to learn from nothing (at least the very first part).. The alternate turning makes it so you don't have to learn many finger positions.
Never too late👍
I will tell you - it is definitely worth it. No question about it.
You will be glad forever that you learnt it.
Lots has been said about Chris. I can't be the only one that thinks these grunge-era musicians were a class all their own. The 70s had the doors, Jimi, and many others of whom had a unique style and offered something pivotal to the entire industry. The 90s, in contrast, had something very different. Not to take away from the others, but how many people could invent entirely new tunings, such as this one, to carve their marble statue of pure emotion? Not like anything else ever was, and will never return.
so fuckin true man, in my mid 30's the more i listen to the classic grunge the more i appreciate how bloody good they were :)
Jimi and the doors were the 60s
@@reeseblair2878 How true. They do tend to be lumped into the same rock sound, because they really invented it. I know about ol Jim Morrison. 27 club member. Similar to how these guys paved the way for Godsmack and Linkin Park.
Agree with your premise...though it is my generation. Amazing though how I never heard how much this song seems to draw influence from Zeppelin.
The 80's were taking what the 70's had brought and perfected much of it with precision. The 90's took what the 70's had brought and amplified that x100.
60s = beginning
70s = creativity
80s = perfecting
90s = 70s on steroids
00s = losing momentum but sparks of genius
10s = falling into a more palatable (bland) blender for the masses
20s = all is lost
6 years later, and I still find myself coming back to this, heart broken.
Finding a great lesson for your favorite tune is always great. Finding Rick Beato himself hand guiding you through it feels like I'm stealing something.
You are stealing it…and it was meant to be shared. I’m sure Chris would be more than delighted that it would move you, inspire you, TAKE IT, PLAY IT.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written! (With Pearl Jam Garden)
I cannot thank you enough, I love this song so much that I want to learn to play the guitar. This song got me through some of the toughest times in my life. Divorced and lost a custody battle of my daughters. Had to take a job overseas because of the amount of child support I had to pay. Lost my best friend to Lou Gehrig's Disease, a month later, lost my brother to a car accident. It was a rough year to say the least. However, this song carried me through it....that is the power of music. And Chris Cornell is one of my favorite artist. So in short, even though it's not short...lol. Thank you for what you do; words cannot express my appreciation of the song.
LEARN TO PLAY! It's so rewarding and has gotten me through some hard times. It's an emotional outlet. Being able to pick up a guitar and just improvise music is a fantastic feeling.
@@christco120 I couldn't agree more. It can be frustrating sometimes, but when it clicks it REALLY clicks.
Wow your story is heartfelt. And how powerful music is!! I hope you are getting better and hope you will see your daughters again. Hold on, Hold on to the music and to guitar
Again, I can’t express how much admiration I have for Rick Beato for showing how the magic is made. The best I can do is say thank you Rick Beato and Rest In Peace, Chris Cornell.
Interesting how almost makes it sounds like a 12-string guitar with this tuning chords
Innit
DAAAAD tuning!
I know very little of Chris Cornell - even though I grew up in the nineties.
Too bad I only became aware of his unique musicality after he passed.
Good stuff Mr. Beato!
I envy you because you're about to listen to one of my favourite musicians for the first time. Happy journey!
That's crazy dude, I can't imagine my life for the past 25 years NOT listening to C.C, that would be like living in a wheelchair for me. His music has been an inspirational program guide on life in this world. I envy you as well, you're about to have your mind 💥 blown!! Enjoy and keep listening!! 💯👍👀
Impossible, black hole sun was the biggest song if the 90's.
@@EnlightenedSavage he probably listened to sound garden without realising C.C was in the group
Same here! 😔... And I'm 48 years old. @Not Right Music
I saw Chris in his solo tour in November 2015 at the Sydney Opera House he played this song it was all that I ever expected to be It was one amazing night.
Thanks Rick for the lesson you are a cool guy 😎
Pepe Vélez will never forget that night. Absolutely incredible to witness and share the space with him and the intimacy despite the size of the main hall.
Thanks so much. Even without the vocals this song is gorgeous.
The guitar singing it
30 thumbs down? WTF!
Thirty people that poked their eyes out with broken strings trying to tune their guitars lol Thanks Rick this is killer.
Great video here. Very hard to find one like this that breaks down for the beginner how you get a guitar into the whacky tuning for the song, yet doesn’t blind you with theory and demonstrates how to play it practically. Top job!!
Tuning for Seasons is FFCCCF. Been playing it....and watching him play it...for years... One of the most enjoyable songs to play😍...
Been playing it in that tuning too. Sounds perfect.
@@OurRawHeart very literally one of my favorite songs of all time.....still can't believe he's gone.... That man and his music will be with me through LIFE
This tuning also makes it quite a bit easier to play. Although it's tough on the 3rd string if you do it without the capo like Chis does in a live vid i saw!
One of the most haunting songs ever written.
This is the best tutorial for 'Seasons' I have ever seen. Thank you, I learned a lot!
One of the all time greatest songs. Well done, Rick
Who are the people that hit the "thumbs down" on this???? Rick, this is awesome and a beautiful reminder of Cornell's magic.I love all your videos. They are never not inspiring and informative. Rock on, brother!
When I practiced this song last year I actually tuned my guitar up to FCFCCf instead of using a capo. It does create quite a lot of tension on some of the strings, but you no longer get that 'choked' tone of a capo. When the open strings are actually open (and have more 'string length', basically) some of these chords sound HUGE! :O That's a lot of fun to try.
How'd you get your strings not to pop?
@@spencerhowell5593 I tuned up reeeeally slowly and the low strings sound dead since then. I haven't needed the guitar for recordings, so I've been too lazy to replace them. I'm actually gonna work on some test recordings after I finish building my new studio. Then I'll definitely throw some fresh strings on my acoustic guitar so it'll sound good again. If I ever try to play this song again I'll get a set of extra thin strings for it.
It does sound better with no capo. All the live versions I've seen, Chris played it without a capo.
@@heavyeagle2371 Agreed! With the open strings the resonance is much better. Very nice projection.
And some of those voicings on the higher frets are easier to play because the fingers aren't as scrunched up.
This has always been one of my many favorite Chris Cornell songs since The Singles soundtrack when I was teenager. I was fortunate to see many great Soundgarden concerts. I always wanted to learn to play this song. Many people play it differently. This lesson blew my mind! This is it! I will have to try this, slowly but surely. Thank you Rick! I love watching and listening to your great stories. YOU ROCK!
God, Rick, if only EVERY guitar lesson on RUclips were like this so simple yet so informative, fret numbers, repeat it a few times, and it's a masterpiece!
Rick, thank u so much for making this video. Cornell was a hero for me and i feel closer to his spirit learning this song which i revered so much i never dared try to learn it. From my heart, Thank you!
This is the best tutorial ever. You're very thorough. So easy to follow. I've always loved this song, so thank you!
First time I heard I was blown away by it. There were a ton of songs during this era that were phenomenal from my perspective. Thanks for breaking this down, Rick! A little late to the party but your content is fun and educational.
I love you man! You makes me cry First Time i saw your tribute video about Chris, and now a Grest tutorial to celebrate Cornell's music. Thank you very much!
Rick Beato as in your name you are truly Blessed with talent.... loved your tribute song from the other day. Still can't believe it. He was all that is Rock and Roll. He filled the Zeppelin hole for me too. Thank you..
Thanks for taking the time to do this tutorial. Very interesting tuning. Clearly, Mr. Cornell had a sound in mind and tuned accordingly, rather than reaching for a more conventional tuning and going from there. Great stuff!
Wow man, your tutorial for this amazing Cornell's tune is BRILLIANT,THANKS SO MUCH AND KEEP ROCKING GUYS!
Thanks for taking the time to explain this. I learned it years ago in standard tuning, but never realized the richness of all the open strings was l missing.
Just getting in to playing CC music and the rhythm and dynamics of this tune draws me in. Very moody and dramatic vibe. Great lesson.
This is so awesome man. I had convinced myself I would never be able to play this. Gonna add this to the playlist.
RIP Chris.
This is now one of my all time favorite YT vids. The best Cornell song IMO.
Oh man thank you! I’ve been meaning to learn this song for a couple years and this is by far the best tutorial I’ve seen. Really well-done!
Many thanks for taking the time to do this lesson Rick! That Epiphone sounds great! I'm just discovering Chris Cornell's music because of your tribute video...what an amazing talent Chris was...such a shame. I appreciate your work!
Ya know. I think Seasons is probably my favorite 90s song. When i hear it ...I'm 20 again, no money, no worries, no problems. Its funny I always thought Chris said 7 feather's for my head instead of sand and feathers. Great video
Great lesson Rick. This was one of your first videos I came across at that sad time and have followed your impressive growth in followers since. Can't believe this didn't have more views. Your knowledge and work ethic is admirable, please keep it up
Thank you very much Rick! What a shock & terrible loss with Chris Cornell's passing. What an incredible talent he was.
I hadn't put this tuning with this song yet. Interestingly enough, I already know this tuning from playing Pete Townsend's cover of Save It For Later by The English Beat. Thank you for your great lessons and awesome cover of Seasons - I'm practicing it now. Peace. JR
Thank you for showing this to us a wonderful song by a great musician. Chris made so many iconic songs that will stand the test of time. I understand you are more of a recording engineer and producer but give us these small lessons are going to keep these songs alive and also with your brake down on why these songs are great they will live on and give people the insight they need to love it more. Thanks again Rick ✌🏻
Such a great sound and that was such an early song in his career. So amazing at that age. Love the grungy tone
The fact beato is playing that Epiphone just reaffirms my purchase haha
Omg thank you!! I always wanted to learn that song, it's my favorite song from Chris Cornell. RIP
Great Song - I've always thought of this as one of Chris Cornell's Best (and first) Solo attempts from the Singles OST. Really amazing to see you break it down = Very Nice and sounds Great !! Excellent
First time I heard this song I was just blown away. Thanks for the video Rick
Thank you mr Rick Beato, great lesson. I miss Chris
I've always wanted to be able to play this song and now I can. Thank you so much Rick!!!
That is an amazing tuning looks really fun to experiment with and and kinda easy to make a cool old school bluesy Zeppelin type sound fantastic
Man this was incredible. Never thought any of the others were quite right. You nailed it
I learned this song cause of your vid..loved this song for years really appreciate it 🤘🏼
I love this song and I loved your explanation on how to play that song!
Amazing job!
Thank you Mr Beato. Always loved this song. Still brings tears. Im going to buy another guitar just so I can have one in this tuning.
Thanks Rick!! Great outdoors tutorial sir....love the book and love your channel
Not surprised to hear Chris Cornell used this tuning. I discovered it via a Sky Sailing song called A Little Opera Goes a Long Way (Sky Sailing was the acoustic side project of Adam Young from Owl City) and I've recently been experimenting with it more lately and this tuning can REALLY ROCK - especially when you tune it down even farther to CGCGGC
Thank you so much for this lesson. It is an amazing song from Chris.
Good morning Rick. I'm Fred, 59 years old. As someone who has listened to a lot of music as well as being a student I appreciate your insight and teaching. You have great taste- most of the time. :).
Try listening to Seasons followed by Kansas' Dust in the Wind. Headphones required of course. Enjoy the listening experience. Let me know about your experience if you ever get the time.
Thank you man for all what you do for sake of magical times😘
That's fantastic. I remember playing it as soon as i heard it back then. Now you just have to SING IT, man!!! Give it a try!!😅
Thank you so very much, you made it very easy to understand. Thank you for connecting me directly to his music.
Rick I loves ya for this. Best of all is my guitar is in CGCGCD 90% of the time so for me I only needed that tuning pointer. Respect.
Beautiful way to “brilliantly dumb it down” nothing easy about this tune and yet, wildly feasible. It almost sounds country... gorgeous melody...
Sound is flawless..super clean
Learned this in a couple of days thanks to this great video - thanks Rick
Thank you so much!!! I've wanted to learn this song for ages, but the tabs and lesson I found weren't that helpful. Now I can finally sing and play this! Sad that it took sucj a heaetbreaking tragedy for this to come about though 😔
You rock man! I like the way you explained this😆 rip Chris Cornell
Awesome lesson.
This song means a lot to me, and really appreciate the upload.
Great video! Wonderful song finely constructed.
Rick Beato, this was an AMAZING TUTORIAL. No disrespect to the other guys who have posted "how to" lessons on this song, but Rick, yours is the ABSOLUTE BEST! You sound just like Chris. You guitar playing sounds just like the guitar playing on the actual song. My favorite Chris Cornell song of all time. Thanks, Rick!
Lol Karl Brownie
I put this as a reply to a comment here but putting it here too.
Yes I only have an electric my dad got me when I was 16, now 51. Never learned much beyond Smoke on the water ;) but had dug it out for my step son who taught himself on it. We got him a nice electric and acoustic. But now I'm hoping my 10yo daughter will pick up the ole Epiphone "by Gibson" and dive in. This video has ME wanting to pick it up to learn. If I do then maybe I'll have earned the right to get my daughter and I am acoustic. She plays viola and her awesome Grampa has gotten her a Uke so 🤞 the sound of many vibrating strings will be heard from our home. Love this song and its writer. One of those tunes you LOVE THE FIRST TIME YOU HEAR IT. Of course it came out before you could instantly "pull up" a dozen versions of it. I first had to figure out where the hell it came from, then "pull up" to my record store. Thank God I did because for me it's simply one of the best soundtracks out there and introduced me to a whole WORLD of amazing artists!!! ✌️🤍🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
A great song by one of the greatest.
this guy is a riot, and the only correct version on youtube
Awesome song awesome tutorial
Man you just made my life complete! Thanks tons!
I’m fairly certain Chris Cornell just tunes his strings to FFCCCF. It makes them sound a bit more twangy and weird.
There’s a tweet where someone asked what Tuning he plays Seasons in, and Chris responded saying “EEBBBE first B is low, next two are high.” At this time, Chris had begun playing the song in a lower register, so he tuned it down half a step. Chris’ version isn’t quite as complicated as this. But I wouldn’t doubt if Chris added an additional guitar in the tuning that Rick is playing in during the Chorus.
@Bautista Juli They do! That's why the capo version is preferred by most who like their strings in one piece lol
@Bautista Juli they use banjo strings in the original version
I've been using FFCCCC
Two low Cs, two highs
@@julianpottermusic i've been playing it that way as well , going to give this way a try today
@@alegee79 wait what ..how do you know this?
Rick is an excellent instructor on this vid.
Despite growing up in the 90's and being a huge Soundgarden fan, I somehow missed this song until very recently. It's no wonder why so many people want to learn it on the guitar though. It's more Blues than the majority of traditional Blues music out there. Definitely a highlight of Chris' discography which didn't get the attention it deserved back in the day.
I've seen it played a couple of other ways, the most popular alternative being FFCCCF with no capo. The benefit of not using the capo is obviously more sustain/resonance, though I don't think it sounds as harmonious as the DADAAD that Rick is using here.
Great lesson, great song. Cheers Rick.
Excellent lesson Rick! Thank you
Thank you so much for this, Rick! Off to practice now. (I'll do the singing part - wish me luck)
Grabbing my acoustic when I get home and trying this
very nice job!!!!!! uncovering 3rd fret capo makes it perfect!!!!!
Thanks for this, I was confused because all the tabs I found had some silly tunings. Never thought of using a capo, as I hate them. This gives me a good reason for using a capo and it sounds exactly right! Many of the tabs don't sound right anyway. I just compared every section with the song from the Singles soundtrack and unless I'm tone def, missing something, or a combination of the two, it sounds exactly right.
That was a great tutorial!! Thank you very much, Rick!
I've learned this song through and with 4 different tunings and I started working on it B4 there was any useful interpretation online...I was class of '95 so yeah sure sir, I did see many evolutions since ( in many more things than how to play a song). Gotta say Rick's way and FFCCCF have it.
That's one of your best videos yet Rick
I remember when you and your friend did the tribute to Chris perfect choice in songs in my opinion... one of my favorites you're a great teacher too
Thanks so much for this. I wish I could like this vid many times.
Having watched many of your Holdsworth-related vids in recent weeks, and now seeing your name pop up in connection to a Chris Cornell song, I'm reminded of that quote (from Duke Ellington?) about there being "only two kinds of music."
hey - I just discovered your channel, I want to say I really dig what you got goin on here.. very talented guitarist. thank you for sharing and teaching your skill with us
Dude, THANK YOU!!! You broke it down for me.
I've watched a lot of your videos.
This one made me subscribe.
Thank you for this brother. And God bless Chris. (Who did NOT commit suicide)
Nice Work. Favorite song from Mr. Cornell. Didn't care much for the movie, but this song off of the Singles soundtrack made the album worth buying.
thank you! i'm so happy that i could learn this song :)
So cool you did this!
Mega tutorial !! Thanks so much Rick !
This is really a fantastic tutorial, thanks!
Thanks Rick. I delayed learning this because of the tuning but the song is so damn good.
Amazing tutorial Thanks for this!
My God, how I loved Soundgarden back in the 90s. But it was definitly not love at the first sight. My first album was "Superunknown" and it was first like a stone in my ear. But after rehearing it a few times, because I strangely could not help myself but play it again, I did not listen to other bands for quite some a while. Chris Cornell was simply a good musician and made really good music. With Soundgarden, Audioslave and solo. "Seasons" is one of my favorite tunes, by the way... thankx for sharing it!
Thanks Rick great tutorial, Just subscribed.
Great great great lesson. Thank you!
Thanks for this. Song is easy enough, but sounds *so* good.
Beautiful. Magical.
There's something so incredibly Page'esk about this song it's beautiful 😍
Rick
I doubt you see all of these messages but if you do another lesson please do I Stay Away - your acoustic rendition is spot on!
