This almost makes me regret what I've been doing with my life - my childhood dream was to be a blacksmith, and seeing you two and the level of skill that you have...I only wish I could have spent more time developing some sort of skill, something that I can proudly say I was good at. Amazing video, you are truly artisans of your craft.
@@artursandins - Lol, appreciate the supportive words.D In the last decade I haven't picked up blacksmithing, but I will be buying a house soon and will hopefully have a shop to work in!
I would LOVE to learn how to do the things that you do in your Birth of a Tool videos. You craftsmanship is beautiful !!!! You are a dying breed good sir and that surely is a shame.
John... I watch this movie when I am sad or when I want to motivate myself to go forge. It's such a spiritual experience, to watch You working wth Your hand, to hear Bon Iver. Best wishes from me and my family. Maybe someday I'll visit You :) I have only 1020 km to You :)
This is a thing of beauty just to watch a true craftsmen apply his skill and make something as beautiful as the items you make. This is something I have longed for as a occupation it is simply inspiring to me to strive to reach that perfection.Keep doing what you do sir I can not speak for the rest..I will watch like a wide eyed child full of wonder.
More videos like this need to be made. Just the beauty of this, is phenomenal. the only thing i don't like is putting that beautiful handmade chisel in that laser cutter to engrave the name. maybe carve it instead?? would look a lot nicer and not manufactured
You made my day!! What a talent and what a beautiful presentation. Not only are you a tool maker > but an artist to go with it !! Congratulations to you. Any person that gives you a thumbs down > they are jealous and they are loooosers !! Thank you. AAAA+++++
My hat is off to you sir. Those are absolutely beautifully crafted tools. I am buying a draw saw from you next chance I get. Incredible. Thank is all I can put together to say.
This is such a motivating video. Thank you for sharing, its unique to see a man build and forge an object from scratch that we as society take for granted. Seems machines have over ran our abilities to create and work for something nowadays. Part III no doubt will be just as awe inspiring. Keep up the great work.
John, although young in years you are well seasoned, I wish I knew your inspiration (Father?) I would love to be a fly on the wall while you create your fine' art of the tool making' persona. It's harmony and a tribal rhythm of metal on metal that rings in my cyber ears. My grandfather could only tell me what it was like to hear a hundred war drums beating in unison, I would love to hear your hammer beating in time to the creation of a tool.
LOVE these videos...Makes me want to get back out in the shop! One thing did bother me..... NEVER wear a long sleeve of ANY KIND while working with a lathe...I worked with metals and around a LOT of lathes..the things that have happened to people for making such a mistake could literally make you cringe at just the site of one.
@@sharonsharon2604 From my perspective the only reason that it shows a bearded guy in a sweater is that he's the one making the tool. If it was a woman making the tool I have no doubt it would show the woman. What these videos focus on is not the patriarchal tendencies of contemporary society; these videos focus on the process of turning raw materials into tools and buildings. If you desire to see women featured in these videos i suggest checking out "The Birth Of A Wooden House." which is also featured on this channel, it details the crafting of the house in which, Jacob, the founder of Northmen, his wife, and their daughters, live. Though there are no female woodworkers shown, it shows both splendid craftsmanship and a deep love of family that shows us why men and women go to the lengths they do in order to cultivate human connection for both themselves and their children.
Absolutely amazing videos (meaning both parts I and II). I hope you will be making many, many more. Keep the Bon Iver soundtrack; it couldn't be a more perfect fit. You've inspired me to learn how to make something beautiful and useful.
Didn't know that Ryan Gosling was such a good carpenter.... ;) Just a joke, really nice work, with beautiful music and awesome video (love the depth of field, and wonderful sound).
when will you make other great video like this? I see your channel everyday to watch if you put one more video. the music is very nice. thanks from Spain
Wow... talk about true craftsman. I love the birth of a tool video's. I do have two questions that maybe someone might be able to answer. Does anyone know what the honeycomb is used for? And why did the wood craftsman use wood shavings on the lathe?

Your tools, the process you use and the video are all beautiful. Amazing work, can't wait for more!
Just received my chisels from these Craftsmen. Well worth the wait.

Wow. Having forged basic flat and point chisels for stone carving, this blows my mind. Beautiful.
Beautiful work, thank you for sharing.
This is so amazing. I want to film work like this. Gahh love it. Very gifted.
Amazing work, John.
There’s some neat tricks hiding in here. And it’s hard to get a more natural beeswax finish than that.
I love bon iver and axes and these videos oh my gosh can i apprentice with you guys?

Have you gotten it yet? If so, how is it?
@@landminehopscotch3617 it’s really nice, sorry so long answering this. :)
I never thought i'm going to enjoy watching a video about making tools :)

No safety glasses while putting his face next to a spinning lathe...
(don't get me wrong, I love this guy and these videos are amazing)
ChristmasLights And the wiggly anvil... He's clearly not German.
Rion Rich I'm bothered by the absence of women in these videos...
Only bearded men in sweaters

It smoothens the surface of the wood. It is like a polishing method.
love these videos. cant wait for the next one.
I really don't do that much wood work to justify having this magnificent tool, but omg, I so want one!!!
Awesome vid.... a pleasure to watch. I use slicks like the one you made.
I'll look for more from you.
Thanks.
Great work, great video.
These are my favorite smithing videos.
Demn, I would pay, just to stand in his worshop and observe this man at work.
Wow, chills down my neck!
These videos are always awesome and yet he seems to have more then a few nitwits that downvotes him in every video WHY????
From what I have seen and read, they are the best. I would love to get in line for one of their axes but I don't know how.
Very nice!
I really like he still using bellows and coal! Good job man!
Didn't know that Ryan Gosling was such a good carpenter.... ;)
Just a joke, really nice work, with beautiful music and awesome video (love the depth of field, and wonderful sound).
I love that he uses the chisel to thin out the handle that fits into said chisel.
Amazing work, and amazing videos! Thanks so much for sharing. :)
Could you please tell me why honeycomb is utilized, and what are the advantages of using honeycomb over other possible substitutes?
Seals the steal and keeps it from rusting and its more natural and a better resource
I just love the smell of Bees wax as it hears up on hot steel.
Make that seven..............John, I think both videos are brilliant.
Wonderfully done

Beeswax--it coats and finishes the iron while bringing out the beauty of the forged metal.
These are great, you may also consider releasing these without music, the sound of workshopping is great ASMR relax time.
