This is the first performance I noticed he played four notes at once, miracle man!
wait where was the moment?
@@narulizard measure 19-20
Time stamp is 0:46
@george Collier you should do one on tubaist Øystein Baadsvik’s «Fnugg» if you haven’t already. I think he plays four notes too at some point there😄
…Unbelievable… my jaw dropped… I love listening to Thijs van Leer on percussive/vocal flute mastery… but I never knew similar things could be done on brass instruments too!!
My ‘gast’ is ‘flabbered’ !!
I think some of the notes he went down a fourth and up a fifth, rather than staying on the same note as transcribed, eg just towards the end. But it’s pretty murky down there so hard to hear! Great job on the notation, and thanks for bringing more wonderful music to our attention.
That guy on the back was just in awe the whole time 😂
I was just about to comment that😂👍
The camera guy knew what he was doing keeping him in the shot
Dude all the people in the background had the best reactions
'who wouldnt be lol
Find someone special who looks at you like this dude looks at the soloist!
James Morrison is truly amazing. He can play not only trombone and trumpet but other instruments as well.
He can play multiple notes on tuba too
At once
Wow so amazing
Legend says his daughter played violin and prohibited his father to ever play this instrument. He would have mastered it in no time
''Snappy too'' is a good demonstration of how many instruments he can play
It’s crazy that he’s not using a parallel interval the whole time I heard it change and had to go back to be sure. This is nuts. Crazy control of the the overtones
Nooo, not at all :)
Trumpet player myself. It’s basically just humming while you play. You can hear he’s humming the top notes, playing the lower notes. It sounds great, but it’s actually not hard. What IS hard though, is to achieve his mastery doing so.
@@fcturner Humming the top note of two I can understand, but when he went to 3 or 4 notes (time stamp :46) can you hum all those extra notes?
@@LidClassic yes, you can, but i don't think that's what's happening after the second
@@LidClassic He played those extra notes with his eyebrows
@@LidClassic You *can* sing two notes at the same time if you get your vocal folds to vibrate in a particular way. I've done it myself though I can't control it very well. But that still doesn't explain the 4th note!
I love how the players of one of the worlds best brass bands are all sat looking in awe!
This man is a true mad lad, He straight up played 2 notes, 3 notes, and now 4 notes at once???
Not four notes. Just three at a time
@@SenorCinemathere are instances when there and 3 notes and a dead note all together (idk what a dead note is I just know the name of it)
There's only 3 notes. The highest one is called a "resultant" tone and is simply an amplified harmonic. Hum a fifth above, nicely in tune, and the major tenth will "pop out." Hum a major sixth, the eleventh pops out. There are a few combinations that work. There was a good article in the old Brass Anthology that listed all the possibles.
He even holds up three fingers on his right hand and raises his eyebrows at that point to tell everyone.
I partially agree. I tried playing it and I'm convinced he's singing the top note, and the middle note is the difference tone. For example when he sings an Eb with a frequency of about 310Hz and plays a Bb with a frequency of about 116Hz, the difference is 194Hz which is a G (0:45). This works for all the middle notes (the Fs in bar 20 are actually Es). Top - bottom = middle.
The same maths works out for the sum tones you're describing (bottom + middle = top), though it doesn't really sound the same. I'd say the top note in the video has a vocal tone to it, and the middle note is a lot quieter than the others. The weird, unstable tone also sounds like two notes fighting each other and periodically cancelling each other out.
When you sing a perfect fifth like you described, it resonates much more stably, and the resultant sum tone is not that obvious (and interestingly the difference tone is an octave below the bottom note, which makes it sound even fuller)
The phenomenon you're describing is definitely a thing, just not exactly what's happening here.
By the way, the resultant tone isn't an amplified harmonic since none of the middle or top notes fit into the harmonic series. The fifths and major tenths would need to be an octave higher, and the others would need to be multiple octaves higher to be even close.
0:49 dude in the back has never seen such magic before
As soon as I saw the title, I knew exactly which musical piece this was going to be and who was playing it. I still had to watch. Damn impressive.
Same here. What a epic music work!
Mans could harmonize with himself
Now that, is some partial control. Those lungs must be on fire!
I feel the man in the back at 0:50
The trumpet player is just loosing his mind in the background lol
That guy's face in the background near the end is hilarious.
I would be doing the same thing tbh
0:16 fellow brass player trying to figure out the technique in his head
0:32 he's in disbelief now
0:49 just baffled, doesn't even know what to think anymore
I feel like people don't realize just how impressive this is
0:16 You know it's good when the other musicians are amazed.
Find someone that looks at you the way that trumpetist looks at James Morrison
just look at the awe in the faces of everyone else in the background
I remember learning how to do this in high school- simple trick that goes a long way. People were mesmerized. Thanks James for the inspiration
Yes, I actually discovered this on my own as a young trombone player. One can of course also hum while whistling.
@@jvarszegi that’s the beauty in it- not as technically challenging as something like… bob mcchesney doodle tongue but makes you sound like you know what your doing 😂
Do you hum and play at the same time? I play trumpet and I'm tryna learn 🥴
@@jvarszegi I love humming and whistling it makes a cool ufo noise but I don't know how to change the intervals
@@mmmscrumptious8247 yes! Try first bowling a steady air stream without your instrument using the same embouchure for your mouthpiece and humming
You might actually notice when you hun there’s already an air stream coming out of your mouth
The band director: "I thought there were four players in our horn section. Where are the other three?"
James Morrison: "I AM the horn section." **plays four notes at once, on just one trombone**
He was making the sound with his voice through the instrument if that makes sense.
If you whistle and hum you can make a cricket noise, your mouth is the most powerful instrument on the planet
"You can’t PLAY 4 NOTES at the same time!"
True. You can't. But HE can!
Technically singing is not playing... :-)
The folks behind him looking absolutely BAFFED!
Amazing. I used to play Trombone in high school, but nothing like what this gentleman can do. Learn something new every day. Thanks for the video.
I'm a simple man: I see a new George Collier video, I click.
That guy in the back is like 😮🤔😮😀😮
Pfff, I can EASILY play 4 notes at once, even more!!!!
(on the piano)
😎
Speechless! I've played at the bass trombone for years and can only dream of doing some of the things I've heard this man do on trombone. Oh well - we all do something different to earn a living - this guy just has fun doing it. Great job!
this guy just never stops does he
I thought you could only play two notes with multiphonics... How the heck did he manage four?!
The way he is playing makes the the overtones of the voice and the trombone louder, so you can hear the next harmonic up
@@jamesedwards9690 ah i see, on my trombone ive only managed to play 2 notes and that was for 5 seconds
It's actually because with some skill you can manage to play AND hum at the same time, I've only managed to replicate it ONCE because of how much air and strength is required to even do the in measure i managed to replicate. as for the triad and four notes, it's most likely overtones and multiphonics. But in the beginning you're actually hearing his voice and the trombone at the same time
When you do certain intervals with multiphonics, the 3rd note clearly pops out if the two notes you play/sing are in tune. Singing a major 6th above the note you're playing (which he does in the clip) is the easiest one. You get the played note, sung major 6th above, and the note a minor 6th above that pops right out (resulting in a major triad in 2nd inversion). The "4th" one is an overtone of the root...that one usually isn't really audible.
A portion of this trick comes from humming while playing.
You can achieve a similar sound while humming when whistling.
The truly impressive thing he's done here is actually playing understandable notes while doing such
I love the guy behind him just staring in utter awe at what he's hearing.
Noise
The guy behind him staring in awe 😂
This guy is whole nother breed
I love the guy in the background at the end. His look of utter shock cracks me up.
If you remember what he played, he played multiphonics on his trombone. Playing chords on a trombone was very hard to sound two or more notes in a single chord beat at the same time! Four notes is possible in a single chord on the trombone? That's impossible for what he played on the opening of the piece! Amazing brass harmonic man!
I taught myself to play two notes at the same time from this clip years ago but I could never figure out how in the hell James got that third in there. insane.
If you get the time to meet James, do it! He's a real pleasure, great man and marvellous musician as well!
dude their faces in the back says it all
…Unbelievable… my jaw dropped… I love listening to Thijs van Leer on percussive/vocal flute mastery… but I never knew similar things could be done on brass instruments too!!
My ‘gast’ is ‘flabbered’ !!
Thijs van Leer is legendary as well. I love their early 70's work (Focus).
@@danielpassigmailcom …absolutely… vocalist/yodelling/flautist… amazing
Me, a percussionist who plays 4 mallet stuff, sees title, "um yes you can?" Lol cool video
As a trombone player myself... I don't even grasp how this is possible to do 4 at once like this.
As a former trombone player I need to elaborate: how the fucking fuck what the fuck umm what did I just... how?!
Literally sounds like a v10 that’s wild
holy shit dude. that was insane
The Jacob Collier of brass instruments
I've tried this, it's really fun.
I love how this is basically his party trick
The astonishment on the faces of the rest of the brass section!
Always a good party trick from James Morrison, then you get the British brass band swinging like a lead brick at the end...
I’m having a really hard time hearing that Bb flat with the Xs, but maybe it’s just earbuds in a crowded space killing it
I just love how the others in the background are just so amazed by how he does that 😂
0:47 I want a girl that looks at me the way the dude behind Mr.Morrison looked at him when he hit 3 notes at once
00:55 bro the man behind is like "how in god's green earth???????" lol
In 2030 he'll be able to do 15 notes at once
I love how the other musicians in the back are just watching him with a look of awe
*watches the entire video through to help with the youtube algorithm*
this guy's face radiates a smugness that can only exist when you learn to play four notes on a trombone
I saw him perform live a few months ago. It's just as cool as you think it is.
I love how everyone in the background looks like their mind is collapsing in onto itself bc mine is doing the same thing
I had no idea that was even possible!!!
2022: You can't play four notes at once
2032: You can't play four trombones at once
Four limbs. There's bound to be someone who could work all the slides independently. The real hard part is getting a controllable embouchure onto all four mouthpieces. I'm not sure I want to think too closely about that. Or why I know the word "embouchure".
I'm shocked I haven't seen comments about that trumpeter in the back silently fanboying for Morrison's insanity
I love that trumpet guy who looks so impresed for what he's hearing
how.
The master of the mucus.
the guy at 0:57 is like: what in the hell
That dude in the back is literally me the whole time
this is why i want to play trombone cuz of the rich sound
0:58
Face of the man in back says it all
The Black Dyke members in the back just astonished. :O
The guy at 00:47 has found love
Me: I should try to learn how to play multiphonics on trombone
Also me: *plays Bb and kinda screams/squeals over the top*
I practice my multiphonics like any good musician would, but I definitely would need to practice more to do that!
The technique which even after a few years of playing lower brass, i still struggle to do
The first time I heard this technique was 40 years ago. Albert Mangelsdorf.
Years ago when I was in high school, Bill Watrous came to a jazz festival at Purdue University in Indiana and did this in front of an entire auditorium. Every single one of us was gobsmacked. He did all kind of scales and harmonies and then proceeded to show us all how do to it. I used to try it all the time on my trombone but I was not nearly good enough. This was probably around 1998 or 1999.
Mad flex
How? Just how???
THE HORN CHORD
Not that I play either trombone or didgeridoo, yet I've learned the very basics of didgeridoo.
This video makes me believe, that this musician applies didgeridoo technique to play the trombone :) Both fascinating and amazing!
Dat guy in the back being completely dumbfounded throughout is really funny to me :D
This is the only song I know on multiphonics. And I love it
that is scary how he can do that
Ive met him. Hes a really nice guy
wow. now i know what i was doing on t bone!
the dude in the back is literally my face rn
We did this in high school, you just hum while you play ;)
But to tune it and make it sound good for performance really is tough, kudos.
My mum was neighbours with Judi, his wife, when she was a kid and saw James often. They needed rose petals for their wedding, and since my grandparents had a whole heap of roses they got the petals from them!
Well, it's a pretty bog-standard major 3rd interval plus an octave but, on the other hand, the book says it's literally impossible so....
Yeah, I'd give him the win.
I'm actually dumbfounded
We all talking about his playing but what about the comedy before he plays in the full video?
I am four parallel notes ahead of you
what the actual heeeelllllll
It almost sounds like he's playing a kazoo, I'm not quite sure how else do describe it
he sings and buzzes his lips. Didgeridoo inspired
That guy on the back said, I thought Im good😢😢😢😅😅😅😅
You can achieve a similar effect on saxophone by humming different notes
i play trombone and may i say- i want to do that
Not surprising, given that James Morrison also plays two instruments at once
