Considering the fact that Czech national final was very low budget and in a very small studio, I think they sounded good. I am sure they will harmonize even better in Liverpool.
The message is indeed sisterhood, but there's a secret meaning : The sisterhood is actually the Slavic countries. Basically, the narrator(s) is Czechia, the sister is Ukraine and the person trying to take the crown down is Russia
@@JamesBond-lp9wr "secret meaning", i think they do kinda refer to Ukraine's crown taken away by Russia. Not literally in the meaning of the lyrics, but i think it is there but hidden.
@@JamesBond-lp9wr No, it is actually about countries. First of all, lyrics in Czech, Bulgarian and Ukrainian represent the three branches of Slavic languages. The music video has great symbolism in each frame. But the simplest representation is My Sister = Ukraine, my fellow Slavic nation, and Crown = Ukraine's sovereignty as its own state.
The song is in 4 languages: English, Czech, Bulgarian and chorus in Ukrainian saying: “My beautiful sister, you’re so strong, brave and only one, the crown is yours” and while it speaks about feminism it has also hidden message. The original video of this song starts with an intro (Not on ESC channel but on the official channel of Vesna, since EBU cut that part of the video cause it was bit political) that’s saying that: once upon the time there was love and sisterhood in Slavic Kingdom, until one day when everything was forgotten. So, it can be said that currently the sister whose crown is under the fear of taking down is Ukraine.
A beautiful song indeed! What you have missed so far is the non-English parts of the song: there are Czech lyrics at the start and end, the rap verse is in Bulgarian, and the chorus is in Ukrainian. The members of Vesna are also from various Slavic countries, with 3 Czech members, a Bulgarian, a Russian, a Slovakian member; although apart from these 6 ladies they collaborated with a Ukrainian musician to create this song. Vesna ('spring') celebrates female empowerment and Slavic unity, and their official video (featuring subtitles for the non-English parts) has a lot of symbolism in it. Hi Georgina! Love your videos! The first time I heard this entry I thought it was ok but now it’s my #2, it’s such a grower. The song is actually about Ukraine. The sisters are referring to the Slavic nations as the band members are from different Slavic countries. They use Czech, English, Ukrainian and Bulgarian in their song. I really hope it does well as it deserves a high place.
There are actually 3 different Slavic languages, each one for a different Slavic language family (western - Czech, eastern - Ukrainian, southern - Bulgarian) so it kinda symbolizes all the Slavic nations, with our similar languages, related culture, traditions, history... related just like the sisters in the video. Plus the members are from various Slavic nations - three are Czechs, one is Slovak, one is Bulgarian and one is Russian (+ they've also collaborated with one Ukrainian). And the song is about the support to our Slavic Ukrainian sister who is in need. I can't even say how happy I am for seeing my country sending this time something more traditional, ethnic, with (also) Czech language... something that I've been waiting for for years 🤩🥰 Btw. just to let you know - the group is called after Vesna - an old Slavic pagan goddess of spring and fertility 😊
Love the song and the folk vibes. Great harmonies, as well. One of my favourites and only listened to it for first time. Good luck from Spain to Czechia!
They are from 4 different countries (Czechia, Slovakia, Russia, Bulgaria) and them being proud of being slavic makes me proud of being from country that has this entry! ❤️🇨🇿
but the chorus of this song is performed in Ukrainian. and they support Ukraine at the moment. and they want to say that all the Slavic peoples they should be together. and about the fact that Ukraine needs to keep the crown now.😅
As an American male, I have very little say on Eurovision, but I love this song! I have trouble hearing the difference, but the song has four different languages in it: Czech, Bulgarian, English, and Ukrainian. Having multiple languages on its own is impressive, but I love the messages as well. While it does empower women, it also refers heavily to being in a "sisterhood" against oppression, like what is happening with Russia and Ukraine. I don't know if it will win, but it's definitely in my top 5.
It's my number 3 but also my number 1. When it comes to common good 'radiosongs' I think Norway and Austria are 1 and 2. But if they win, I'm happy too. I need them to win top 10, at the least.
I was afraid of never getting your reaction to Vesna. Thank you for this. Loved this. The song has such a powerful sound and message. I hope it will do more than well. Love 🫶🏻
The song has a reference to Ukraine's situation, the ''sister'' from the title is Ukraine, the sister of the other Slavic countries, many Slavic languages can be listened to in the song too. I think you will figure it out now with what I've said.
I hope you are able to see the music video for this song. It is so well done and they sound and look amazing in it. It will give you more understanding what the song is about visually and lyrically. As you said it is female empowerment and women supporting each other, but also unity of the Slavic cultures with reference to supporting Ukraine. As someone with Serbian family history even I am proud of the song too.
I love this song- I hope they find some budget so that the performance matches the high standard of the song, singers and official video. If they do that I can see this doing really well in the final.
You were very close to the meaning of the song. "Sister" is all Slavic nations & the world (why English is used), minus Russia. It is more about Ukraine as a sister. If you watch the official video in their youtube channel, the English lyrics are at the bottom with what language it is (EN = English, BG = Bulgarian, UA = Ukrainian & CZ = Czech). The verse is in Czech and English; the rap is in Bulgarian & the chorus is in Ukrainian. My favourite this year along with Italy!!
One of my favorites along with Norway's entry. I can't decide which one I like better. It's just such a powerful and fresh pop tune. Also, the way they sing in different languages but the song still flows so well is just perfection.
In an interview, Patricie Fuxova, a member of the „Vesna” group, says: „Our song „My sister`s crown” is about all people who experience some kind of unfreedom, like oppression from society, trends, technology, and it's such a symbol for these people to put on a crown and feel strong enough. The song combines four languages. As the author, I wanted the Czech language in the song, because I think that it makes sense to preserve the Czech language in a world competition and to have enough self-confidence to stand up in a foreign context. But of course we will also find English there to connect the individual nations. And there is also Ukrainian, because this year's Eurovision is dedicated as a tribute to Ukraine. And there's also Bulgarian, because one of our member is Bulgarian, so we wanted to include this language, and pay tribute to other Slavic nations as well.” I hope this will help you understand better the Czech entry.😊
I love this - definitely one of my favourites along with 🇮🇹🇫🇷🇳🇴. To do it justice it will need better staging but if the Czech national final was done on a low budget that would explain why it's a bit basic in this clip. The message of unity and solidarity will hopefully endear it to a Europe-wide audience. Not sure if it will win but I think it's got a good chance of making top ten. It reminds me of Little Mix who sing a lot about female empowerment.

This is so good. I love this song so much it's on my repeat list. The use of different languages. The rap this could win Eurovision I hope this goes through love this song so much it's in my top 10 so far .chose love over power .
This is amazing. Real artists. We need to see more daring musicians like this. And I don’t mean absurd stuff like you know who. It’s a bit of a tough piece to pull off, but these ladies are kick ass. Such a great blend of styles. Together with Austria and Norway and Estonia, this is what it’s all about in my view. High quality original songs and performers. And all of these countries represented by women. It’s time again for a woman (women) to win this year.
This song have very deep message from heart to everyone not only to slovic ppl, is about past few years what we experience like pandemic, ukraine war, economic crisis, about to fear how they programming us, with love we not give them power that all - is simple beautiful message.
The song is actually a love letter to Ukraine and Slavic countries and the sisters are the other Slavic countries. The song is sung in Ukrainian, Czech, Bulgarian and English
The song talks about ukraine, ''my sister's crown' they are talking about ukraine and slavic countries, we can see it as well in the part were she says, ''you can put your hands back, no one wants more boys dead, we are not your dolls'' meaning that slavic countries are not just russia and that they don't whant any more war
most ppl think it is about Ukraine but it isnt, Georgina nailed it what is all about. Georgina that competition had tehnical problems, better look video for song that is how their staging is going to look on ESC.
Hi from beautiful Greece!!! I love you so much as your reactions!!! For me vesna is my number one currently on spotify!!! You should watch the video clip of them cause for me its better than the live on tape performance!!! The meaning of the song is political at all , but so interesting!!! There are too many symbolisms in the video clip...The are talking about the slavic kingdom who broke due to fights andeach country became enemy to the other!!! Each girl symbolism one country from slavic kingdom!!! In the video clip one girl ''plays all her money'' another ''look herself in the mirror and she can see only her beauty etc...!!! In my view, its contemporary and a masterpiece...The only thing they should do for doing well in esc is to bring their video clip into the stage and all the girls sing together not as in their live!!!
Hey Georgina this is a female empowerment song with some anti-war elements into it, I suggest you watch the video clip but on their own Vesna channel not on Eurovision channel because there are subtitles on, finally you should know that this is a song written in four different languanges Czech English Ukranian and Bulgarian
I agree with you Georgina, it's a 'grower'.... I heard this on release and thought 'yeah, nah' but have found myself coming back to this more and more. Great chorus, honest message. With great staging, maybe top 5?
If you have the time, I'd suggest watching the music video to understand the principle of the song more The group has members from 4/5 different countries, portrayed in the song as well with their respective langauges. The song is mostly about Slavic/Eastern European sisterhood, being independent as women and as countries/cultures. I think however that there is an underlying tone of anti-war/Russia going on (this is why the music video is important) Russian imperialism was/is usually signified with the purple colour, which in the music video appears a lot, with men dressed in this colour trying to "control" the women like puppets (them breaking free and standing for their own cultures). Also a scene where one of the girls is getting spoonfed a red fluid, which I think stands for the Soviet propaganda However, the second part is a personal interpretation; I might definitely be looking too far into it and/or be completely wrong 😂
Winner for winning values: > the world should profess what makes it a place where we all want to live ...What the song wants to tell us is so relevant - and not only in the context of war conflict: about the need for independence (women / country -> oppressed), who are entitled to be free, to have their own identity, they cannot be controlled... And this applies to anyone who experiences feelings of unfreedom / whatever the reason /. So they get a message of cohesion in the form of a song: you are not alone, we are connected, we feel a sense of belonging and we will help you when you are in trouble. They thus give hope /= aggression of power - the Purple Ones are stopped precisely because people can stick together and stand united for true values/. Thank you for sending such a powerful message of ...mutuality through song
They will def include some Video elements - its stunning. They will surprise at stage and gave us a loe budget stage first. Clever!:-) Czech came to win!
The song's a dichotomy between female empowerment and Slavic unity. The individual girls representing different Slavic countries are reminding you-know-who that Ukraine is a sovereign country, so don't take her crown. They sing, we are not your dolls (symbolising the Matryoshka dolls), not to be played around with. The video is epic and worth a watch. My number two behind Spain so far.
It's probably easier to pick on the theme of the song as an Eastern European and a native speaker of a Slavic language, but it's about the Ukraine War, and the theme is not subtle. The band members come from a range of Slavic states, and they address Ukraine as their sister - a fellow slavic nation. They tell her: 'My beautiful sister, you are strong, brave and the only, the crown is yours'. (those are the lyrics of the chorus, translated from Ukrainian) The crown represents sovereignty, which Ukraine rightfully owns. They tell the aggressors: "My sister's crown, don't take it down, nobody has the right to do it". And they have some pretty direct anti-war messaging: "No one wants more boys dead." etc.
The English part of the lyrics is quiet simple to get the whole idea. You definitely understand the meaning. Nobody has right to do it You can take your hands back "No one wants more boys dead" "We're not your dolls" Blood's on your God's head You can't steal our souls All the sisters of the world Come together with a prayer Choose love over power
It´s a song with apolitical subtext... Ukraine is the sister in this song. They are singing in czech (first part), than english, chorus is in ukrainian and rap part is in bulgarian. Vesna is a czech female group mashing czech folclore with modern music. There are 6 members of the group now. Three are czech, one from Slovakia, one from Russia and one from Bulgaria. They are making their own music and playing their instruments. They are awesome!
"No one wants more boys dead", "Choose love over power"... The song is clearly about the sovereignty of Ukraine and the support of the other sisters (or Slavic people) to it. It is very nice when the song isn't obvious and require some thinking.
this whole national finale almost didn't happen as Czechia, due current economic crisis and Eurovision not being really so popular among Czechs to justify the expenses, been seriously considering withdrawal from Eurovision and the whole finale had to be planned and staged in mere few weeks and with no budget to talk about. so if one wants to understand the meaning of the song as the singers intended it its better to watch the official music video( it includes English subtitles so everyone can understand the lyrics which combines 4 languages). so while the song is obviously about women and womens empowerment its also about Slavic unity( theres multiple nationalities in the band- Czech, Slovak, Bulgarian and Russian and the group in general is big on those topics) and Ukraine and her ongoing fight against Russia( the chorus is in Ukrainian and the Russian woman in the band has to leave Russia and is currently living in Czechia and is vocal about her anti- Putin stance and being against the invasion and war in Ukraine- but cos she's Russian she still gets lot of hate for it and that she dares to sing in Ukrainian)
So this song is about Ukraine but it can also be read as feminist song. The sister in the song is basicly Ukraine which is why parts of the song are in Ukranian (and Bulgarian, Czech and English).
... actually the song is a voice of support for Ukraine. Don't worry, I misunderstood it too at first. Your interpretation is also considered valid. In terms of vibe, this is another of "mixing modern production patterns with folk sounds" trend, taking inspiration from Slavic folklore, particularly Ukrainian, Czech and Bulgarian. These three languages are also included in the lyrics.
The song is about Ukraine - if you look at the lyrics it becomes more obvious. It's about the other countries of eastern Europe and their support for Ukraine... Ukraine is the 'sister'. 'My sister won't stand in the corner, nor will she listen to you, my sister, wild at heart, will never let you tie her down'. 'My sister's crown, don't take it down, nobody has right to do it' 'you can take your hands back, no one wants more boys dead' 'My beautiful sister, you are so strong, brave and the only one, the crown is yours'. The chorus is also in Ukrainian whilst the first verse is in Czech and the rap is Bulgarian :)
This is a song about slavic countrys and the way they fight with eachother all the time evan tho they are all sister countrys and are same people. Especually the war in ukraine
They sing about the sisterhood of the slavic countries. Parts of the lyrics are in ukrainian, the crown is for the ukrainian sister. The eastern countries are not the dolls of Russia. And together they will beat power with love and sisterhood. You can watch the music video for the correct translations:)
Due to the low budget of ESCZ (czech national final) the overall performance is very low-quality (staging, mic quality, backing track, etc...) The music video has A LOT more impact, and is probably a lot closer to what we can expect in Liverpool due to a much larger stage and higher budget. I would recommend looking at the music video on Vesna's channel! It has the lyrics translated to English, but the song is actually in Czech, English, Ukrainian and Bulgarian! (The music video on the Eurovision channel does NOT have the lyrics included!!)
You can't understand hidden message if you listening song on 3 languages that you don't understand. In this cases subtittles are must :) To get the whole picture
Hello! Enjoyed your analysis a lot, so thank you for that 🙂 Just to address your speculation about the themes of this song: yes, there is definitely a female empowerment message here. But also: it's *totally* about Ukraine! Let me try and give you a flavour of why I think that. First, the chorus is sung in Ukrainian, and the translation is: "Beautiful sister Oh, you're so strong Brave and unique The Crown is yours" These lyrics appear to subvert a Russian narrative, wherein people from that country often talk about Russia and Ukraine as being 'sisters', with Russia being the big sister and Ukraine the little one. The song is saying that, in fact, Ukraine is part of a sisterhood of ALL Slavic nations (represented by the fact that the band members are from Czechia, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Russia), and that nobody within this sisterhood has a right to take her (i.e. Ukraine's) crown. The verses also contain many other references to this situation. For example, when they sing "We are not your dolls", which you rightly picked up on, I think this refers to the classic Russian 'matryoshki' (nesting dolls). As I understand it, the message is something like this: "You can't take us inside yourself, like one doll in the set of matryoshki contains the next doll that lives inside it". I hope that's helpful. There are many more things about this song that could be analysed - especially when you watch the official Eurovision film clip, which has a Russian girl being seduced by a bowl of borschch (Ukraine's national dish, misappropriated by Russia) and guys dressed in purple (the colour of Empire) running around with TVs on their heads, symbolising Russian misinformation. But for now, let's leave it with this: Ukraine is both the muse and the message :-)
@@sbsbbsshshhssh8356 I think it might be referring to some evil stuff that the Russian Orthodox Church has been saying. Their Patriarch has said, for example, that any Russian soldiers who die fighting Ukrainians will have their sins washed away (and thus go straight to Heaven). There have also been videos of Russian military commanders talking to troops about their holy mission ... so it could be that, too. Or maybe the 'god' in question is Putin - maybe they're alluding to the idea that, in autocratic societies, the person at the top of the 'power vertical' is playing a sort of godlike role for the nation. Either way, I don't think the line is against religion in general. And if it was, it would be very inappropriate - Ukraine is a more religious country than Russia, with much higher church attendance (like ten times higher) and a majority of young people who profess spiritual beliefs. So the metaphor wouldn't work.
Considering the fact that Czech national final was very low budget and in a very small studio, I think they sounded good. I am sure they will harmonize even better in Liverpool.
Well they made up for it in the video! I love the visuals in that video! ❤️

At this moment for me top number 1 is Czech Republic - Just amazing song, good music, nice voices, strong and direct message. ~~~❤CHOOSE LOVE OVER POWER plus WOMEN EMPOWERMENT ❤~~~ the song touches on so many topics… and it produces me goosebumps… Hopefully it wins Eurovision Song Contest 2023 and let’s go for Prague2024. Will be difficult but let’s go 4 it😅 People, you have just to vote for it !!
have you seen the videoclip for the song? it's so powerfull and great
Awww you have got to watch the official video for it, the staging of it might explain it a bit better but it's soooooo good!!!!
This is so good. I love this song so much it's on my repeat list. The use of different languages. The rap this could win Eurovision I hope this goes through love this song so much it's in my top 10 so far .chose love over power .
This is such an amazing song! You should watch the official video. It is art. I hope they will bring some of that same vibe to the Eurovision stage!
A strong contender for number 1 this year.
most ppl think it is about Ukraine but it isnt, Georgina nailed it what is all about.
At first I wasn't sure on Czechia, but I think they're in my Top 5 now.
If you have the time, I'd suggest watching the music video to understand the principle of the song more
The group has members from 4/5 different countries, portrayed in the song as well with their respective langauges. The song is mostly about Slavic/Eastern European sisterhood, being independent as women and as countries/cultures.
I think however that there is an underlying tone of anti-war/Russia going on (this is why the music video is important)
Russian imperialism was/is usually signified with the purple colour, which in the music video appears a lot, with men dressed in this colour trying to "control" the women like puppets (them breaking free and standing for their own cultures). Also a scene where one of the girls is getting spoonfed a red fluid, which I think stands for the Soviet propaganda
However, the second part is a personal interpretation; I might definitely be looking too far into it and/or be completely wrong 😂
the song is about sisterhood, respect, support and cooperation! For example, the issue of minorities, forms of violence and the like.
I hope they change the stage show because the music video is perfect ❤️
Correct me but I think the song is about : Slavic sisters that stands for Ukraine ...
The studio version is amazing and one of my tops. I'm not keen on their live version sadly 😞 xx
we stan joanne
Good reaction 💜💜 The song is about female empowerment i guees
The song is about slavic languages and similar nations (sisters) and about Russia which turned against them and wants dominate them
Thats why the song is being sung in several slavic languages
also the song is about slavic countries, like all should stay together, no war and these things
the meaning of the song is deeper, it's about unity between slavic countries, this sister they're referring to is Ukraine
I really like this one, I'm sure I can hear a bit of ABBA somewhere in that chorus.
my sisters
yes the song is good
They will def include some Video elements - its stunning. They will surprise at stage and gave us a loe budget stage first. Clever!:-)
Czech came to win!
Nobody has right to do it
You can take your hands back
"No one wants more boys dead"
"We're not your dolls"
Blood's on your God's head
You can't steal our souls
All the sisters of the world
Come together with a prayer
Choose love over power
what do they mean by "bloods on your God's head, you can't steal our souls"?
The Bulgarian rap 👑
this whole national finale almost didn't happen as Czechia, due current economic crisis and Eurovision not being really so popular among Czechs to justify the expenses, been seriously considering withdrawal from Eurovision and the whole finale had to be planned and staged in mere few weeks and with no budget to talk about.
so if one wants to understand the meaning of the song as the singers intended it its better to watch the official music video( it includes English subtitles so everyone can understand the lyrics which combines 4 languages).
so while the song is obviously about women and womens empowerment its also about Slavic unity( theres multiple nationalities in the band- Czech, Slovak, Bulgarian and Russian and the group in general is big on those topics) and Ukraine and her ongoing fight against Russia( the chorus is in Ukrainian and the Russian woman in the band has to leave Russia and is currently living in Czechia and is vocal about her anti- Putin stance and being against the invasion and war in Ukraine- but cos she's Russian she still gets lot of hate for it and that she dares to sing in Ukrainian)
They're my winners.
Due to the low budget of ESCZ (czech national final) the overall performance is very low-quality (staging, mic quality, backing track, etc...)
The music video has A LOT more impact, and is probably a lot closer to what we can expect in Liverpool due to a much larger stage and higher budget.
I would recommend looking at the music video on Vesna's channel! It has the lyrics translated to English, but the song is actually in Czech, English, Ukrainian and Bulgarian! (The music video on the Eurovision channel does NOT have the lyrics included!!)
Please watch the music video, it tells a lot more about the song. And from what I've heard it's more about the sister Ukraine than woman empowerment.
You can't understand hidden message if you listening song on 3 languages that you don't understand. In this cases subtittles are must :) To get the whole picture
The song is in 4 different languages - Bulgarian, English, Ukranian and Czech.
Apparently the budget was very low for the stage and songs and all. But overall its great.
Can you make video about Poland ? 😁 (Check also Jann's song)
Okay the "sister" is literally Ukraine - it's about Slavic sisterhood. Maybe looking up the translations would help.
Hello!
Enjoyed your analysis a lot, so thank you for that 🙂
Just to address your speculation about the themes of this song: yes, there is definitely a female empowerment message here. But also: it's *totally* about Ukraine!
Let me try and give you a flavour of why I think that.
First, the chorus is sung in Ukrainian, and the translation is:
"Beautiful sister
Oh, you're so strong
Brave and unique
The Crown is yours"
These lyrics appear to subvert a Russian narrative, wherein people from that country often talk about Russia and Ukraine as being 'sisters', with Russia being the big sister and Ukraine the little one.
That’s a very interesting interpretation and now that you mention that I can totally see it. Thank you!
oh wow, and what about them mentioning God? i hope they where nit mocking or saying anything bad
The outfit theme is a lot stronger in the music video
Waiting for Finland
I like this entry 👍 top 5 maybe?
The song is actually about Czechia supporting Ukraine in its war and calling out Russia for all the dead “boys”
