- What a great day this was the hottest Day of the Year. Started catching Bass on Lures from the start. Unbelievably most were landed while being surrounded by Seals.

Some notes on Marks:
I use a number of editing techniques to hide where i am fishing. This is not out of disrespect to you watching this video. A well placed Gill-net can destroy a bass population and commercial netters watch this and other youtube channels to see where the fish are. I love showing our fantastic coastline and all it has to offer. I was fishing under some magnificent chalk cliffs today and it pains me to have to cut out or manipulate some of this scenery. But i have a responsibility to protect some of these marks for the future.
Landing a Bass:
Bass are tough fish different to out freshwater carp. No i don't use a landing mat most of the time lifting a smaller fish out the water or on to the beach is the easiest thing to do. Yes you should quickly un-hook them BUT its worth stopping to think how its hooked and where you are going to release the fish. These shallow Sussex beaches are ideal to move the fish on to the shingle. Not dangle for the net when you could of beached the fish. Other marks a net is essential. Places like Piers and deep overhanging rock marks.
Seals:
Seals can destroy a Bass Population. They are, i admit a ready made excuse when we don't catch.I am also well aware of the argument that they were here first. I was surprised that were not hunting the Bass today and chose to stand watching a clumsy humans approach! However i also see myself as a hunter in this environment and part of it as well as an observer. So i fish around them. A single 3lb Bass will feed my family that evening. , Is Healthy There may well be troll like comments that i might harm a seal. I wont harm a seal with a weedless hook. The seals can see a line and are very cautious. Some individuals do learn the skill to take a fish off an anglers line but this colony doesn't.
Eating Bass.
Yes i eat Bass very much within the guidelines , I do not freeze them or give them away, just taking enough.Eating fish is a big part of Bass fishing for me. Admittedly i was schooled by Anglers from the 60s and 70s and i still think there is a real joy in Eating your catch. You can still respect your quarry and bonk it on the head.
YOU THE VIEWER
I try to make you the viewer centre stage for these videos i hope that comes across . My intent is to showcase our magnificent Island and my enthusiasm for Angling. I love this way of fishing knee deep in the salt and id encourage you to give it a go.
MY SKILLS
The more i learn about Lure fishing for Bass the more i realise i know a very small amount.! I first fished a Lure under the cliffs at Beachy head in the Late 80s. I watched an angler use a Rapala lure land Bass after Bass where my peeler crab bait landed none.It was a lightbulb moment. I was that annoying kid that went up to every angler and asked them questions. Well i'm still learning now, more than ever. Sea fishing needs more listener than talkers
COMMON QUESTIONS
Where are you fishing-
This has been fully explained- There are hours of Mark guides on the channel to get you started.
Do you use single Hooks-
Yes sometimes-Pros and cons
Do you do guiding-
No Only for the Angling trust as a coach for a Kids youthclub
What state of the tide is best- It depends. But Any state of the tide can fish well-Start by considering what the fish are doing.
Can you fish in unclear water with Lures ?
YES- try it
How do you attach a Lure?
SP- Rapala Knot
HP Lure clip
Do you use a swivel on a lure?
NO
Why don't you use a net ?
I do but only in specific situations. a bass on shingle and boulders should be brought in on the tide.A net can cause you more trouble than its worth.
You said THIS now you say THAT
You have to be able to change your mind. In the light of new information or experience. Today was a good example i really did think that seals would put the Bass off feeding.
Recreational Fishing for Bass here in Sussex
Recreational fishers are subject to the following rules:
Recreational fishers using rod and line are prohibited from retaining bass in February and March. Catch and release only is permitted during this period.
Outside of February and March, recreational fishers may retain two bass per person, per day.
Bass retained outside of February and March must measure at least 42cm in overall length (the Minimum Conservation Reference Size).
No bass can be taken by fixed or drift nets.
These rules apply when fishing from a boat or from the shore.
Wonderful filming and the sounds of the waves lapping and waders behind you . These features set your channel apart from the rest . Sitting at home in Scotland with winter temps and rain streaming down the windows, this is lovely to see. Well done on the bass , what a brilliant session and many thanks for the great entertainment . Tight lines
Many thanks! Sorry about your weather , it’s raining today if that helps
I'm also in Scotland in borders thinking exactly what you've said, I miss the sound of the water as I'm still working on my wee boat also wondering when I'll catch my first bass before I pop my clogs. This is what I enjoyed doing without a rod, just rock exploring amongst the soothing waves.
Just read (for the first time!) your notes. It’s a shame you have to justify your actions when to any experienced sea (bass) angler you are really ethical in your actions and approach. Thanks for your videos which I really appreciate.
Thanks ! Not everyone reads them I think it’s just addressing the usual objections I’ve had over the years. Appreciate your input
Cracking video what a great session
Great video as usual. Goes to prove what I’ve always thought and experienced through my nearly 65 years of fishing is that bass are relatively easy to catch once you have located them, the trouble usually is “how do yo locate them?” I remember a session in West Pembroke many years ago fishing at midday from a rock mark in gin clear water and it was almost a fish a cast on a Rapala J13 for about 20 minutes and then they were gone. Fished the same mark in identical conditions with the same lure for the next couple of days and not a sniff! Interesting to see so many seals in your video and it begs the question were they trying to trap the bass against the shore in order to predate them or were they attracted to the area in the first place by the feeding bass. Have you ever had similar success on that mark or do you think that it was a one-off where a number of factors all aligned perfectly to give you a great session of fishing?
It’s a one off but I knew a mark further down that produces on the ebb so I followed them down tide. The skill in bass angling is finding them when they are finicky and not feeding! That’s when these full time guides earn there salt - thanks David you make some good thoughtful input just what we Saltwater anglers welcome here
Love your videos! my dad's moving south and I was hoping to catch him some dinner, my current rod is a 2-8g ultra light I'm guessing I'll need something a little stronger to land a seabass?
`Not necessarily ! in certain situations you could land a bass on that. but 30g rods a go-to weighting
Anither great video Matt, still yet to get my first on a lure but its coming! Can I ask what leader you use, lenght, BS and knot?
Covered many times in the channel flourocarbon 18lb FG knot 7-9ft depending on water clarity. As for brands check out the website in description
Awesome video man!! I just recorded a bass fishing video for my channel and it’s cool to see how other people are doing!! I love watching your videos, keep up the good work!! 🎣🤝🎣
I will check it out
A really great day's fishing, thanks for sharing it with us.
I did most of my bass fishing in the late 1950s and our approach was completely different back then. Our ideal sized fish was one between 10 and 12 inches (25 -30cm), i.e., pan size, anything larger were returned, a 42cm one definitely would have been put back. The largest bass I ever saw was 8lb, it featured on the front page of the local newspaper. By the way I did all of my fishing off of the Sussex coast near where we lived.
Interesting to know that thanks Tony
Nice day by the looks of it. So many seals, looks like something out of Dagon, perfect eating size bass….
Hi mate I live near the sea south coast Emsworth what to buy on a budget i need it all thanks 😊👍🏻😀
Check out the saltwater blog www.saltwaterangler.co.uk/tackle-I-use
Great video. You weren't joking when you said you were surrounded by seals. 😂😂😂
murky water protects them :-) - so bass will bite in presence of seals , so i guess?
The only way you will blank is ! Is, you forget to attach a lure to the end of your line 🤔 lol 😆 😂 or go to your favourite spot and find you haven't put your gear in the car.
No one would ever do that !
@SaltwaterAngler Don't you believe it !!!
Between you, me, and the four walls, and yes your sworn to secrecy !!!
I went out one a few years ago now, in the car of we go, get there, Rods Box Bait, down to the beach open box ?? Not a bloody reel in site ##××*****%%^***&&
Cleaned, oiled, and yes not in the frigging box, still in the shed.
Your the one I've ever told.
Awesome again Matt a good days fishing in all my days fishing Hastings and Stleonards or other East Sussex beaches never saw a seal weather report cold with a fair bit of rain. Happy catching from Australia Nick
Hello mate - glad we have the sun and its warmer here! Seals are taking over
Been waiting on this video since getting your email about the Bass being back lol
Love your vids. Where would you recommend to go lure fishing in and around Brighton? I am new to sea/lure fishing and want to take my son.
@@MrRockycave the marina
Well in Matt. Be interested to see if they take any fish off the line this year, had them grab a live bait the other day inside 😅 that gave a nice bite 👀
Yep they haven't learnt this trick yet fortunately- Blimey yea i've had them take mackerel of the line in Wales.
Wow, what an amazing day! Loads of bass and beautiful weather. Thank you for sharing the experience. The seals are popping up like a game of Whac a Mole!
What a mole seal love it !
....and can I catch ONE like that....
What a days fishing, I think those seals were amazed by how easy you made it looked 😂 👍👍👍🎣🎣🎣
Thanks mate - glad you watched this one
Lovely fishing! Congratz! Cheers By RecordaçõesdePesca channel! 🎣🐟👍💯
Hi I wonder if there’s any good place for Seabass or mackerel near hull or Scarborough
Check out @slippylimpets he might be able to help
I’ve fished that mark a few times but never worked out whether it’s better on the ebb or flood. Just wondering your thoughts.
Flood is a good start
I didn't know we had rocks that size in Sussex..
We sure do
Nice one Matt 👍, you certainly had a great day there mate, some beautiful fish too.
I thought at first my eyes 👀 decieved me ??? But no it was seals out there.
Again nice one mate 👍.
Cheers Les.
Glad you enjoyed it Les
The bass shoal were probably corralled into that spot by the seals waiting to feed
Yes i think you are right
Can’t beat it, what more can life offer
Great session Matt. Well done.
Lovely video. Captures the summer lure session perfectly.
Many thanks! That was my aim , thanks for your support as always Ian
What to comment here. Brits should be lucky to have bass that will hit lures during the day. Here, catching bass during the day is turbo capital catch. U catch more bass in one session than me or my friends catch in a whole year. Temperature changed, so we got bluefish now. Dont get me wrong, bluefish is good for spinning, but it takes a lot of gear. Greetings from south Croatia
Greetings thank you for your comment - very interesting to hear about the state of your fishing. It’s not like this here all the time though, just a good day where luck was on my side
Lovely conditions, I am off to Amroth Beach next week and hope to have a day or two like this 👍
Fingers crossed - a good time of the year for you at least
@@SaltwaterAngler hopefully, new to your channel, watched your instructional vids and decided I have to give the Bass a go on holiday, as staying right on the beach, near the western end of the bay, with easy access to the rocks that run across to Saundersfoot. Looks proper fishy on Google Earth. I have mainly done small river fly fishing over the years, having only done a bit of sea fishing (mackerel spinning in Cornwall, Scotland and Wales), but the light tackle and searching aspect of the bass game looks like fun, going to take my kids out for a go too. Thanks for the inspiration.
Fantastic session!Seals keeping the bass from leaving the area, that’s some team work right there.
Brilliant edit as well! 🔥👏👏👏
Thanks mate
Matt the seal whisperer, got them rounding up the bass for you. Great session !
Good call!
Nice video mate lovely to see lots of bass would you recommend around 5 miles from Eastbourne pier cause I wanna lure fish but I don’t want to go so far lol
Just go off the beach . Bigger tides best
What a fantastic session mate shows shallow flowing tide brings them in lovely video 👍👍🎣
Yes good spot, we prefer the bigger tides here in sussex
Best lure ive used them sandy andys.
New to me but now a go- too
I could not believe what i was watching. To me it looked like a huge number of seals were showing of on your mark.
Was thinking i must be wrong, i mean it cannot be that you catch so much bass between the seals.
So i was more than surprised to hear you say that they were in fact seals.
Unbellievable that the fish were still there.
Enjoyed your video a lot, thanks for the upload.
Greetz from Stipo from Holland
Thanks mate - Yes for some reason it looked so bassy i knew id catch and show the seals how to do it !
Your always good to watch plenty of information about tackle and tactics, I live on the coast in pembrokeshire west wales . plenty of bass here
Thanks for the comment Your in a great neck of the woods there
Great watch that mr saltwater .. certainly gets my seal of approval 🙄 looks like a sandy Andy will go on my shopping list for a forthcoming trial ….. just wont mention it to the wife … she will think I’m on my second midlife crisis 😮
Great commenting as usual Sir!
What is the orange glittery lure ?
Haart shad ?
I remember a few years ago on the south coast seeing a seal was a real treat and when not fishing still is , but they seem to be around in numbers nowadays which makes me believe our waters are not a low in fish stocks as we thought.
And I've had days when they completely ruin the sport and fishing is terrible, however it's nice to see they didn't have that impact on your day another great video
Some good balanced comments there thanks. Yea they could be here in numbers because there are so few fish in their feeding grounds further out ?
Great to see a good session Matt. I've used the 12gr Tobis Ammo, always works when things are slow and encourages strikes.
Thanks for watching.
A red letter day for sure, congratulations and thanks for another great vid!
Thanks for commenting
Matt thanks
Exactly what I needed to see today
Great scenery great fishing and good fun that rod performed so well I'm impressed
Thanks again for your hard work
Niall
Thanks mate it was a good day. I’m loving the rod too.
Would you tie the braid to a swivel or full blood knot to leader and what length leader?
Either
1.a rapala knot on 5ft braid(depending on conditions)
2.small link to braid tied with uni knot or double blood knot
3. NO SWIVEL from the shore
@@SaltwaterAngler Thanks, I'm just starting to get into lure fishing after a 10yr break from carping and seeing a lot of new knots
The rapala knot is a good one to learn
Once I seen the seals I thought your fishing was finished, just goes to show you… great video as always Mat
At my mark I know I have a better chance when I see the seal the same one always shows up.
Amazing video and channel Matt, session of dreams, well my dreams, you caught more in this one than I have all year lol
Thanks mate, these days do happen . My next session after this was two tiny bass smaller than the lure !
Fabulous day for you Matt, plenty of your precious bass. Great video in beautiful surroundings. Thanks for sharing 👏👏👏
Pleased to share
I always like watching your YT vids, Matt. Another BIG 👍🏻s up
Thanks mate 👍
At 0.59 was that a diver putting the bass on 🤣🤣🤣
Rumbled !
Just subbed Sweet vid man just started my own channel and love it keep up the good work
Welcome to saltwater angler and welcome to RUclips creating !
I can't believe how many fish you caught and how many there must be in those waters. Also the amount of seals was nuts. Tight lines Matt 😊
Thanks mate yea was a terrific day. Always learning and showed seals aren’t always hunting.
Great video makes it look easy but I've fished that spot many times but not as successfully as that, cheers
Needs the right conditions I think.
Always enjoy watching your videos Matt, always interesting and full of enthusiasm and a smattering of excitement 😀.
Do you enjoy every minute ???
Of course you do.
Keep them coming.
Les.
I’m set up for a blank next session ! But yes very enjoyable
No Matt, 😊 you don't do blanks, 😅😅
Cracking days fishing Matt - the days we all dream about bit rarely have. Top angling buddy.
I know right and between me and you I had 8 more fish I didn’t film !
Awesome video. The fishing was amazing for me to watch, and the sound of the waves sent my young daughter to sleep.
Ha ! Better than the telly tubbys
Cracking video that mate, never seen so many seals in one place at a time like that 😮 do you mind me asking where abouts this location is?
It’s in Sussex best I can say
Great little video with some nice Bass. Little Q about the rod: Those Skyline rods are only about 7’ 6” so does the shortness limit casting range ? It seems a bit short for sea fishing. I normally go for a 9’ to 10’ rod and wonder if I am misunderstanding something ?
It’s often debated but I love this shorter length now. Advantages include underarm or back casts flicking out lures so when you have cliffs behind you. You can cast all day vey light weight. Remember this is for my area if you asked a Cornish estuary angling they would say 9ft - no need to cast far here though . Quality important too
@@SaltwaterAngler Good point about the back cast and lightness. Horses for courses. Thank you for taking the time to respond.
How many cameras you broken now🤷🏻♂️😆
The iphone is a great survivor!
Great vid and not that you need to but great notes, great channel and great info as always quick question tho I know legal size is 42 cm but what size do you think is the cutoff for taking ? If this makes sense ?cheers rich 👍🏻🎣
Hi Rich yes it does make sense one fat 55 maybe as long as there’s a few around
Great thanks , out tomorrow morning probably a blank but nice to get out 👍🏻
What a session Matt! So much for the theory about fishing for bass in bright conditions not being favourable.
Bright sunlight may be an issue over very clear water but here in the sandstone , chalk and gulley water it makes less difference
Great video. Appreciate the notes and learning bits from the comments, too. 👍
Glad it was helpful!
Good work mate! What’s your camera set up?
Insta 360x3 and iPhone 13 DJI mini2 for the drone shot.
very nice . where are you fishing please?
Did you keep any for the dinner plate ? There must have been 1 or 2 of legal size
This is in the video description
Great session, lots of decent sized bass there too.
Hi Luke , yes a good day- have been down your way recently too
This is a spot I've been tryna get down to for awhile, gonna have to give it a go this week
Go for it !
Another great video Matt, you make it look easy, cheers mate !
Ha ! Some days it just clicks - you should see me try and walk over slippery rocks - not so easy🤣
Nice one mate, looks like you had a good time. 👍😎
Great day yes and thanks for your support
See the seal pop up at 0:16 and instantly thought - There must be fish about.
Ha ha just look a few seconds later !
Why is it I keep reading go early hours before light starts picking up when you're in bright sunshine Matt? Talk about confusing😢
I’ll tell you exactly why- more than one thing can be true. Big tides in Sussex are at 13:00hrs - 14:00hrs also a good time . Because we don’t have gin clear water sun overhead won’t put fish off.
Early mornings more applicable when daylight hours are less - October for example each mark fishes better at certain parts of the tide.
@@SaltwaterAngler thanks for that Matt clears it up some what . Will be off to St Mary's bay either tomorrow or Thurs.....early hours 😉 to try get back in the swing, hopefully the ole back holds up 😀
Good luck mate, as i say let me know how it goes.
Nice fishing, quality content as per usual 😉
Thanks 🙏
and poeple say when you see seadogs dont bother trying
Exactly
Great video, Loved the seal bit! Thanks - L C
Yea quite strange that bit !
I've never seen so many Seals in one area before lol What a session Matt
Yea was wierd Shug but now I have the confidence
Damn, that's some fishing, and really good ones too.
Nice thanks for watching , I enjoyed reliving this day too
Wow incredible you smashed it ❤
Well more to do with finding feeding bass than any angling skill.
Those seals 😊
Take your .243 next time 😂
🙄 nooo I’m trying to get over my seal hatred !
0.56 seconds did I see a seals head pop up.
Err not just 0.56 ! Did you watch the whole video?
Yes awesome
What a day . Thanks for a great video Matt.
Thanks mate, come with me next time !
Did you lose any Fish to the Seals ?
No ! They haven’t developed that skill yet
great vid ,what a session, thanks Matt
Glad you enjoyed it
Seals have learned that fish caught and put back are easier to catch, brilliant video as always.
Ha clever little sea pigs
Wow... a really sunny (hatless 😅) day & a constant flow of 'punters' !! Any angler's dream with that superlative kit. 🧜♂️🙏🍺 Applause from Barcelona.
🤙
Lovely Great vid.👍
Thanks for watching
the seals were hunting the bass as well;-)
I think so
Another great video 👍
Thanks again!
Was that a seal that popped up at 1.00 ?
A load appeared later, I think they were watching you Ha Ha
Great session Matt!
Hello Sir thanks for watching again!
Nice
Thanks
The seals are there for a reason.
Beautiful day, great film.
Very interesting with all those seals about. I don't let them put me off now as i have caught plenty with them about. Great video!
have you done the draw for that lure rod yet?
Thanks yes draw was done details on the community tab and under the original video
Lovely days fishing there Matt I was told if the seals are around fishing will be rubbish. You just proved otherwise 👍👍
Absolutely
Allways amazing that sea anglers don't use a net especially when you are dragging fish over rocks and then releasing them ! Great sport but try to remember not only anglers watching 🤔
This has been dealt with in the video description.
Shares us tons of videos with top fishing marks that he always blanks at. Finally catches some bass and intentionally keeps it from us all. 🫵😂
@@melonpip if that’s your takeaway from this channel It’s not the place for you- Plenty of other channels out there that show some terrific catches from around the country.
