- #TheBigStory | Ebb Hinchliffe, Executive Director at the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, says the US-China chip tensions are leading semiconductor companies to diversify to other nations like the Philippines, something he described as a 'silver lining.'
Hinchliffe also discussed the economic significance of the Luzon Economic Corridor project in attracting investments and how the upcoming US elections could affect investor sentiment.

I agree with the other people's assessment that energy stability and affordability are needed in the Philippines to attract manufacturing. We have water for chip making but we don't have consistent electrical power. One thing I realized is that countries that make high end technologies most of them have nuclear power plants i.e. Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, China, US, Europe, and etc. We need nuclear power plants to stabilize electricity and price. We need at least 2 nuclear power plants per islands (Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao). Japan has many nuclear power plants went through earthquakes and typhoons. Japan survived many incidents and continues to move forward. Philippines has that abilities too to survive and continue on.
, 👍
Other semiconductor companies should look into investing in Mindanao. The education level is quite at par in and around region 10 and the labor cost relatively cheap. There's not much traffic and the quality of life is much better. Beaches are good for the expats and the mountains green and fresh. It is much cheaper to set up new factories in Mindanao.
We need a constant eletrical power there if we ever hope to achieve that manufacturing like a nuclear power plant.

Foreign Business are afraid of Mindanao baka daw kc humiwalay sa Pilipinas papano ang Investment. Sabihan nyo ang mga Politiko nyo.kc pag badtrip kayo panakot nyo hihiwalay kayo sa Pilipinas. ang tagal tagal na ever since Luzon Bisayas Mindanao lagi nyong panakot ang bumukod.
Right direction congratulations Philippines Semicon + one ✅🇵🇭🇺🇸🌟🌍🌟🌎🌏🌟🌟🇺🇳
Taiwan semiconductor fabs have a lot Filipinos working as equipment engineers.
Actually, it was the US who abandoned the Philippines in computer and chipmaking manufacturing and transferred all their facilities and equipment to China in the early 90s because of very cheap labor, low rent for land and most of all, no labor strikes. The companies like Intel and analog device left the Philippines, and the problem is that US has created monster economy out of China they helped, and now, seems like regreted the move. Going back or bringing back their manufacturing to the philippines may not be attractive anymore because the Philippines still hasn't move forward with so many requirements and regulations especially high labor costs.
High labor cost is not an issue. Filipinos are paid lower compared to workers in taiwan but look at taiwan. The problem was political instability and corruption. Hope that change
corruption and the stupid high cost electricity is the problem. when you want to do manufacturing you need cheaper and reliable power, plus less corruption so permits and other requirements are done smoothly.
Agree. Some or maybe most politicians are just siphoning funds away the taxpayers money instead of using it to improve the livelihood of most Filipinos. Only on election period do they have the heart to give back to the people. Especially on rural areas. We need to have a stronger democracy by having more informed people having meaningful discussions about current problems like the comments preceding mine.
Its because China is the world's largest customer for semicon chips. China is also the largest customer for cars.
Who is going to.buy the chips from expansion? Not China for sure, not Philippines and US is overflowing with chips.
Huh? What makes you think that? The demand is very high.
are you sure of that overflowing thing? the last time i know there was supply insufficiency
overflowing? 😂😂 typical numbnuts who keeps on barking without knowledge🤮😝
The problem with Philippines we don't have the basic infrastructure needed to be the one, Taiwan plus ONE....number one problem we have is ELECTRICITY GENERATION....MANUFACTURING in the Philippines is a NEGLECTED INDUSTRY that supposedly we must focus on it....because our advantage is we have an intelligent and well educated manpower thou it is not a cheap labor but Semi conductor companies don't look for cheap labor but smart laborers especially our laborers are well educated and English proficient, the problem our government focuses then on SERVICES INDUSTRIES...BPO or call center which is not a healthy industry for our people and not so much highly paying industry...unlike SEMI CONDUCTOR industry. Second problem are the fundamentals of economic principles or rules or laws....corruption in the sense that every time our leaders or presidency is change, change of focus or change of rulings.
I agree with you, electricity cost is one of the factors why foreign investors are hesitant to invest in the Philippines.
Time to build new dams, new geothermal and nuclear energy plants.
China is no longer friend of Philippine, no more investment from China. Philippine can get help from US but the only issue with american is , they do more talk than act, Chinese market will satisfy domestic manufacturer first, they are not going to buy from Philippine
China troll i dont see any Chinese investment only POGO.
