It is like being concerned for a dear friend who has been trying to get pregnant for a long time, and finally the moment arrives. Every parent would be grateful to have a newborn as handsome as him. Everyone can unite behind Donald just like everyone can unite behind a big mac and fries. Easy peasy. America has the best of everything-great Sam's Clubs and Walton family bunkers, efficient drive thru lines, one stop shop style amazon shopping, Whole Foods, the best Netflix series, a population that is genuinely concerned for the welfare of it own people, wonderful botox injection divorce parties, and a superior education system that offers a multitude of choices, whether attending college or leaving to attend employer-paid apprentice training to work in the robust manufacturing sector of USA, and the list goes on.

The problem is, people in the USA don't know what socialism is - they have been taught a knee-jerk rejection of the term and have been convinced it's bad and scary, yet what they describe wanting _is_ socialism - healthcare, fair laws that protect workers, a fair shot, for corporates to be held to account, safety. They've been taught to vote against their own interests, because the democrats themselves aren't, for the most part, a socialist party either and both sides benefit from the same capitalism that helps their wealthy donors. Unfortunately, the US education system is deliberately bad and the US people are deliberately taught to pride ignorance of other cultures (and how they often have better systems) as patriotism.

The one thing that stands out about Europe's politics to me in this regard is that the parliamentary system that is so common in the continent allows for a swift recall of a politician's power, through votes of no confidence and snap elections. I truly wish there were more Democratic senators in the US, so that the option would be available to impeach Presidents and Supreme Court justices and others, as the Constitution's framers clearly envisioned at least in some instances. Instead, there is impunity at the federal level, and nobody has ever really been impeached or censured on the federal level in any consequential way. The only way to get there is by electing left-leaning senators in rural areas, which seems near impossible in the US at the moment.

The problem with this conversation is that it’s a feedback loop. People want good healthcare this is true but then you don’t vote for people who make that a priority like Bernie Sanders. People want higher wages but vote against unions. People want better work conditions and vote against regulation. People want to be able to afford their rent but vote against the politicians who want to go after corporate investment and algorithmic monopolies. They want lower groceries but voted for the person who immediately wants tariffs. Things were too expensive for sure but people ignored that inflation was coming down in favor of his age. We cannot fix a problem if we can’t properly identify it. The issue isn’t that politicians don’t brand well, it’s that the populace doesn’t educate itself. The bottom line is we are stupid.

I think this oversimplifies it. In the US you don't have a democratic system that allows people to vote to express these preferences any longer. That's why you get odd voting preferences where people vote for both Trump and AOC at the same time. It's because it's not possible to vote for any party that delivers these things. Basically you need preferential voting, and some form of proportional voting (at state level first probably), to allow third and minor parties to fix these issues.

    • @angelmujahid2233
      @angelmujahid2233 3 дня назад +11

@ I do agree with preferential voting and maybe proportional voting. Rank choice seems to do well. I do not however agree with the idea that third parties alone can fix this situation. Better voting would allow us to pick out specific issues individuals so that’s certainly a positive but some alternative candidates are just as bad as the establishment. I also don’t subscribe to the belief that every single democrat it Republican is bad or that none of them know how to govern. Which brings my argument right back to the stupidity of voters, because we never choose the candidates that will benefit us. Neither do we grasp that change is marginal. The idea that we will trample over an entire candidate because of a single issue regardless of the other things they want to do is also ridiculous. For example Bernie sanders has a lot of pretty good ideas but the issues people don’t like is that he is a socialist or Jewish. Or Buttigieg being gay. There were even discussions with Romney was running for president on him being Mormon. stupidity made it one. These things should have never been a factor, stupidity is to blame for that.

Trump is a byproduct of democrats corruption, elitism, and ignoring working class people, among other issues. Very frustrating people won’t acknowledge this. Are they still better in some ways? Of course, but a lot of people are OVER it, democrats have a higher expectation because they’re supposed to be better, many expected democrats to listen and they refused. Trump constantly proclaims to be against “the system” “elites” “drain the swamp”, the people just want to feel heard, doesn’t matter he’s lying through his teeth, they’re willing to take that chance. Sigh. Fools. :( The dem party helped create this monster and it sucks because people think I’m just trying to obstruct progress, quit the opposite, THEY are because they know we’re trapped. Have to choose between status quo that benefits the rich and full blown authoritarians.

I'd argue that the main difference between Trump and A.H. is though that the latter was driven by idoelogy. He truly believed that the people he hated needed to be destroyed. Trump on the other hand, as is becoming increasingly obvious, is only driven by lining his pockets and staying out of jail. He parroted MAGA talking points because he knew it would get him into office and keep him rich & important. So in short I absolutely do agree that Trump will try to establish an autocracy where he'll never have to worry about the judiciary system again, but other than A.H. he himself doesn't have much interest in doing anything about immigration other than what is needed to make him look good.

A perfect storm began to brew when the winds of change that blew through the 1960's died down and left confusion. The old certainties had been exposed but not overturned. The love of money filled the void and became the meaning of existence for many. For others a descent into rudderless individuality and substance fuelled hells. For others, resentment and anger, hatred and despair.
The post war journey is taking us in to a reversion to the human default position of ever increasing inequalities.
A state which was once believed to be the natural or God ordained order.
" Rich man in his Castle,
      poor man at his gate.
He (God) made them high and lowly, and ordered their estate"
This theory allowed the rich feel comfortable with the situation and resigned the poor to be contented with their lot.
This is where we are headed back to but it will be bloody on the way.
      The human condition dictates it.

Exactly! Look, both parties cater to corporate America. However, Dems do attempt to pass bills that would actually help us and Reps always shoot it down and only vote it through after it's been soooo watered down.
Look at Build Back Better for instance that the Biden admin tried and tried to get through! Got watered down until it became the Inflation Reduction Act instead, it did pull us out of the recession nightmare from Trump's first term but still wasn't what it could've been.

    • @Daniko2

While that is partly true, since Clinton, the Dems have run against the messes that the Republicans made, but when they win, doing little to reverse them. For example, grocery prices were up in the last few years. Yet Biden never reversed the Trump tariffs! Obama won the presidency in part because of the 2008 downturn. Yes, he and Bernanke did a lot to prevent the next Great Depression. But not a single banker saw any legal consequences for destroying the world's economy, and pretty much all the sacrifices were made by labor. Pelosi announced that "the US is a center-right country", and did everything she could to kneecap any representative who proposed popular policies that ran counter to that narrative. And let's not forget it was Clinton who deregulated Wall Street and signed the criminal laws going after so-called "urban super-predators". Ever since Clinton, the party leaders have essentially told the left--and even the left-leaning moderate Black voters that are their base: "yes, we ran on fixing this, but that's not reality. So sit down; the adults are talking". That's a really terrible way to treat your base.
So yes, the Dems have been penalized at times for going left, but a lot of that comes from their bedrock insistence that tiny little tweaks are the best they can do, and anything more is juvenile nonsense.

The current fight between Elon and MAGAs is actually very important as it will *hinder Project 2025.* As well as attempts to install and assist right-wing governments elsewhere, such as in Europe.
Elon has been such a vital asset for the far right worldwide, that having a falling out between him and the more virulent rascist is a disaster for the propagation of the far right, and thereby authoritarianism.
And as for Project 2025, that requires unity with nearly every elected federal Republican politician marching, or _goosestepping,_ in lockstep, in order to succeed with their power grab.
They have such a small margin of control in the Legislature that they can't afford any GOP politicians feeling conflicted with the Base.
Democracy might well be saved because of the fragile egos of a pair of narcissists who can't stick to the plan..

But of course the billionaires who underwrite them want their piece of the pie. And unlike Musk they are smart enough to stay out of the public eye. And are all the more dangerous because of it.

    • @casbot71
      @casbot71 3 дня назад

@marlenesmall5527 The disunity within MAGA and the civil war Elon's causing will get in the way of Project 2025.
Already, Elon's debt limit stunt has blown up the illusion of Trump having control over Republican Congresscritters.
And by Trump unnecessarily stepping in and picking to side with Elon in this current spate, it's going to further hurt Trumps political capital.
Trump needs a lot of political capital and influence to get everyone to fall in line and support the various pieces of legislation necessary for the plan (such as for the reclassification of federal employees).
It's not that Elon was necessary for the plan, although control of Twitter would be useful to it. It's that Elon is throwing bombs around inside the tent.
And that is a real hindrance to everything.
Now, a distraction is useful when doing nefarious deeds, but this is a distraction for the ones trying to carry out the nefarious deeds.
Where Elon is vital, however, is in helping spread far right authoritarianism to other Western countries. Twitter is used to amplify the messaging and spread rightwing disinformation, and so on.
Then Elon's pocketbook is an incredibly powerful tool in smaller countries, where a hundred million dollar donation is more than all the major political parties combined normally spend on an election campaign.

@maryhobbs4183 seems to be a theme. I definitely don't think he was the savior or necessarily agree with him on e everything. However, he was a leftist populist and he appealed to the same kind of people swayed by Trump's feaux Populism. Heck, even Rogan was on board with Bernie. It was obvious the corporate dem funders were threatened by him and thus we ended up with your typical "more of the same"candidate that the a large swathe of average voters were tired of seeing and railing against.

As a Canadian really enjoyed Prof Giroux's take on current insanities. I have been depending on US experts like Ruth Ben-Ghiat, Fiona Hill, etc for my fast track, get up to speed on motivations of gullible uneducated people to follow Fascism/Dictator playbooks. I grew up near McMaster, a great University. I have friends who grew up during WW2 behind Iron Curtain, they say MAGA voters have no idea what they just voted for. I was in one of those countries in early 1970s, it was an eye opener as a teenager who had been in many western Europe counties previously. Thx David for all you do. We have very few people in Canada like you and your compatriots explaining what is going on. We are seeing the dangerous playbook flow up here like a tsunami these days.

The amount of young people that grew up in countries formerly beyond the Iron Curtain and that will throw away democracy for a perceived strongman is also mind boggling. I blame it on the failure of the educational system and on the power of trends set up in the USA. We want it or not, the US is a powerful trendsetter, influencing the rest of the world.😢

The future of big style USA is through Donald Trump. It's what the American people get at this time and that is exciting for many in Europe and the Commonwealth countries.

Bernie has been fighting this stuff for decades but unfortunately the Democrats decided to ignore these problems until it was too late. And these career politicians decided not to push forward with AOC, instead defaulting to their typical Democrat to run the show at the DNC. There are people trying to fight, but many of them are getting snuffed out by household Democrats. The Democratic Party needs an upheaval right now and needs to start working on becoming an actual leftist party again. Instead they are gearing towards the same old appeasement of Republicans and remain on the center-right.
