I felt something had to change because I wasn't content with the direction I was heading. Unlike most resolutions, I stayed committed to my plan, and now I'm entering my third year of medical school. It's the small, consistent steps in the right direction that truly shape this life. These steps compound faster than you might think. So, best of luck with your resolutions-they're entirely within reach with a bit of discipline.

Mine too, I love listening to unhinged lunacy. It makes me feel a lot better. And this is a classic absolutely unhinged rant of the highest order. Case in point Sam is desperate to elevate one day of violence from the right (which was actually stoked by bad actors from the left), when the left's MO is violence (BLM riots for example >20 people including innocent children murdered by rioters, or May 29th, or the various autonomous zones, multiple murders there as well), you only have ONE day to point to, and the only people murdered there was one or two of the protesters. These things are not even remotely comparable. The left is obviously where the violence is, they even have magazines named things like "Militant", I mean how much clearer can it be??

My wife and I have decided to move to Seattle to be near our grandkids. We have 6 under the age of 7. Family has become important to us over the last 5 years as we’ve discovered that work can be done anywhere, but with family the time is precious limited. They give more meaning to the day to day happenings than any job ever could.
So glad you have a family that you enjoy to spend time with. Mine is a stressor for me except I have an amazing husband. Life is short & we need to cherish the moment.
I always appreciate Sam's contemplations regarding the current chaos we're experiencing -- especially with regard to Trump and MAGA, but I don't care much about meditation, so I just sort of cruised through that portion. As for Sam's resolution regarding treating each year as potentially your last, there's merit in that approach, but it also comes with a downside: When we perceive our time is running out, it's human nature to cut corners, to expedite for the sake of completion. There's something to be said for being careful, thoughtful and -- most importantly -- thorough. My approach is to always remember that life is (relatively) short, and we have limited time, but when you're tackling life's important tasks or questions, commit yourself as if you have all the time in the world. Even lose yourself in it, if necessary, if only temporarily. I've heard and read Sam long enough to suspect he actually does this too, perhaps without realizing it, perhaps subconsciously. In any case, Happy New Year to everyone! I hope 2025 turns out to be better than what we can see on the horizon right now.
“Would I do this ? Would I pay attention to this ? Would I care about this if I knew this would be the last year of my life ?” Thank you Sam. You are the voice of reason, a grounding presence, and a reliable and constant reminder to stay present and in the sound center. Happy New Year.

I counted myself as someone who never suffered from any kind of mental distress for 36 years of life, until 2024. Then I had a seemingly random panic attack in the airport, which in hindsight was probably due to depression, that set me off on several months of anxiety and spiraling thoughts. Waking Up quite literally saved me - meditation taught me to quit trying to grapple with or mediate or grasp at or push away or alter my mental experience, to simply relax my mind and let experience just come in, despite thought. I'm realizing now that purely happy experiences and moments are not a result of mental effort on my part, but arise through no effort at all. It's only when I look at my own happiness and interrogate it that it starts to evaporate, and the anxiety sets in anew. Thank you Sam for teaching me this - it has significantly changed the course of my life.

It would be if he didn't become intellectually trapped by his irrational hatred of Trump. It's almost as if he was brilliant, then a short circuit afflicted him, creating an intellectual pothole that he couldn't escape.
Sam is a good man. He tries to see things clearly. Being awake is sometimes a tricky thing. A beautifully decorated chocolate cake can lure us into thinking we are hungry, when we are not. Sam asks us all, including himself, to notice what room we are in. A good question.
What a decadence we have fallen into, how sad to know that there are people following the stupidities of those who amassed fortunes, worshipping them as leaders, as they did in the past with King Midas.
I hate to rain on your little moral vanity parade, but both sides are captured by “the stupidities of those who have amassed fortunes”. So what it boils down to is a contest between one of the most brilliant visionaries of our age, Elon Musk and George Soros, an open borders lunatic whose get out of jail free D.A.s are destroying American cities from New York to San Francisco. If you are having trouble deciding which of these two billionaires cares more about the future of the United States and Western Civilization you haven’t been paying attention.
I treasure your podcasts even though I do not agree always. I am a grandmother. I am thinking of you and your family today. It takes courage to face the facts when raising your children in this time. Sending my heartfelt thanks and best wishes to all of those close to your heart.
I’d really like to discuss things with Sam. For a guy who has such an affinity for logic and truth he can’t talk about Trump honestly. You can hear it in his voice and see it in his eyes. Honestly, listen to his interview with Megan Kelly from a few years ago. And I love Sam. I pay for all his content and wish I could have gone to more of his live talks. But if he were that guy from RoboCop and TDS was for sale, Sam would say, “I’d buy that for a dollar!” Sorry, but it’s true.
Looking into the mirror I front of you, maybe. Trump and his followers are someone I would never invite to any of my gathering or buying anything valuable from. How could anyone trust him run a great company. What gives you the confidence with his track record & attitude? It’s maddening.
@ bro. First of all, take an extra second to spell and use grammar properly. I know this is the RUclips comment section but if you want to throw down then you first gotta step up. 2nd, Trump’s first term is sufficient evidence. I’ll counter with, what in the holiest of holies would give you any confidence in Biden or Kamala.
@@freedomlife3623 That's part of the problem. People should invite people they don't agree with to gatherings. Completely writing people off is a cop out for people who can't mount an intellectual defense for their chosen leaders.
To start off my new year's resolution finally I took the pledge to give 10% that Sam always recommends. I must say I recommend it too. It gives an unmatched feeling of productivity (and indeed not just a feeling) to what is by nature a largely wasteful and chaotic life, not to mention a feeling of optimism that one's struggles, "first world" or otherwise, are truly amounting to something. (There's still room to join the first 10,000 to do this, in case that's appealing)
Thank you, Sam, for all the work you’ve done this year to bring some clarity and reason during moments when they seemed so distant. I hope you stay motivated to keep doing it. We need it now more than ever.💪
The irony is that the more of Sam's haters that comment on his videos, the more they are actually boosting him through the YT algorithm. Keep Making Sam Rich, lol!
I don't hate Sam. I used to listen to him quite a lot, and learned a lot from him, specifically in areas of spirituality and meditation. But his logic now seems blinded by emotion and it's making him sound hypocritical. He brought up the "vermin" comment, but does he not remember the "deplorables" comment? His rigid stance that Trump = bad and Anyone Else = better falls flat when he provides examples that both sides are guilty of. Also, he's bemoaning the fall of liberal democracy while in the same breath advocating for anti-speech censorship. Sam Harris is a case study of how even a sane and rational human can become blinded by partisanship. I'm sure you'll disagree with my opinion, but the case of Sam Harris taught me be aware of how my own emotions influence my judgement.
@@shawqihaBut Hillary was making the opposite point with her "deplorables" comment. What she was actually saying was that half of Trump's supporters were decent Americans whose votes we should be courting. Her point was exactly that being a Trump voter did *not* mean that you were deplorable. This is the same kind of lie the media spun about trumps "fine people on both sides" comment.
Sorry, what you're seeing is that it's possible to disagree with someone's politics without hating them or wishing their financial ruin. Yes it's possible, just maybe more difficult for left leaning people.
Watched the 10 minute Rogan clip of Tulsi Gabbard discussing her meeting with Assad and that you felt was just "astounding". Merely talking with the guy makes her some sort of sympathizer?? Mind you she prefaced the entire thing by saying she didn't think we should be supporting the terrorists groups trying to overthrow him which seems perfectly reasonable to me. I'm not discounting your other criticisms of his cabinet picks (ie,. Gaetz, Hegseth) but just calling balls and strikes as I see them Sam. I'll need to hear a more convincing argument against her before I jump on that bandwagon.
Totally agree with you, Sam. We should all live in the moment& trying to live the best life in each year we are in. Thanks for being the sound & sane voice in the chaotic world. I am certainly joining you for your new year resolution.
I still have respect for Sam and what he has to say. I admit he's flawed, though. He has ideological blind spots, is a low level troll in his own way (very subtle), and has an unrepentant ego to protect. Accepting this, I still think he's an important intellectual voice that should be considered.
The problem with Trump isn't that everything he thinks or does is necessarily bad; it's that it has be to be understood to be good or you're somehow not a real American. What's being removed from public life is the respectability, and maybe ultimately the right, to dissent. He's the hard-sell version of a cartoon-brand of fascism that will guarantee the success of the soft-sell version of the real thing later on.
Sam, long time fan. I noticed you haven't spoken much on A.I. despite it quite literally changing our world even more rapidly than these conflicts and geopolitical issues you're discussing here. I would love to hear more of your voice on this. Feels as though we're in dangerous territory.
This hits the nail on the head. I’ve often thought that Trump and his apologists dodged a massive metaphorical bullet on January 6th by *failing* to accomplish some of their aims. It’s only because Pence, Pelosi, McGovern, and Romney *avoided* harm by a matter of minutes and/or feet that Trump and his lackeys get to act like January 6th either wasn’t that sinister or wasn’t that serious. 5:57
Indeed. What is a good life. Reluctant to listen because everything necessary and important will be said, for me, by Sam. What I believe Sam is saying is often felt by those older and aware of their mortality in a real and palpable way. Live life as if you are much older before you get there.
Thank you...reflections on our human condition and how we show up each day determines what that new day will bring...moment by moment...for each of us ..and all of us. ❤
I much prefer this kind of podcast on RUclips. With fascism upon us, it's important to live according to one's values, and to enjoy life hoping that the chaos will be minimal.
May years ago S H was a great spokesman for athiesm, then he started pontificating on his particular political views and his spiritual advice. Since then his tone became pompous, hectoring and even hateful to those who disagree with him. And the Triernometry comments showed how horrible he is when we see just under the surface. Ps his lectures on meditation are insufferable because of the above. As for his new years resolution , who the hell cares
14:27 "Don't you see how every experience, no matter how pleasurable or intense, gets distorted by your mental efforts to try to grasp it, secure it, prolong it, rehearse it, narrate it, compare it, change it?" Why, yes, I do see. That was the point of those efforts! What good is flavored water and other ephemera without some sort of attitude or evaluation, perception of beauty, conceptual overlay, etc?
Living this year like it's my last. I think it sounds a little cliche but is much more meaningful when you honestly sit with the thought and consider what changes you'd make. Would I stop wasting time playing video games? Never I enjoy that part of my life far too much. However I can think of more than one promise I'd be devastated to know I would never fulfill. I think it's time to get to work on those things. I try not to think about death to much as its caused a lot of mental anguish in my life previously, but it can be a sobering experience to remind yourself of your mortality as well.
Thank You and Happy New Year Sir. In this "your last year" - imagine that you might be wrong about January the 6th, and that the future could look brighter for the first time in many years. Good luck everybody.
@@freedomlife3623 Every part could be wrong or at least exaggerated. I'm not saying that it is - we are all speculating. But we should at least extrapolate from the most likely case, not the worst case. Trump and Musk are clearly not as bad as Sam pretends. The case for Kamala being much worse is very strong. I'm still a big fan of Sam, and our views are aligned on almost every other subject - especially the dangers of Islam (the worlds biggest problem IMHO).
America jumped off the cliff by embracing open borders insanity, legalized theft in big cities and biological men in women’s private spaces. Trump is the antidote to the woke madness that was already destroying America.

Were you happy with the current state of affairs? Just curious....
Thank you Sam. You've changed my life over the last 5 years for the better.
@@mike2carrington This comment is ironic at the highest degree.
@@djb5320 explain. If you don't then I rest my case.
@@djb5320 Interesting, my last comment got deleted by RUclips. Not sure what they were upset about?? Anyway, please explain. Check today's news - left wing violence in the news again. I rest my case.
I am apparently not allowed to reply to djb 5320 - how about you explain what you mean if you see this.
Thank you so much Sam!! 💙Please don’t ever stop talking to us, we need you to keep us sane in these strange times.
My wife and I have decided to move to Seattle to be near our grandkids. We have 6 under the age of 7. Family has become important to us over the last 5 years as we’ve discovered that work can be done anywhere, but with family the time is precious limited. They give more meaning to the day to day happenings than any job ever could.
what's this got to do with sam harris? thanks for commenting though

So glad you have a family that you enjoy to spend time with. Mine is a stressor for me except I have an amazing husband. Life is short & we need to cherish the moment.
He articulates with such precision and clarity, and checks every single box and detail. NOBODY does trump like Sam ! Thank you !
I appreciate what Sam does so much.
As always- a voice of reason in a chaotic world
Well said, Mr. Harris. Thank you.
“Would I do this ? Would I pay attention to this ? Would I care about this if I knew this would be the last year of my life ?”
Thank you Sam. You are the voice of reason, a grounding presence, and a reliable and constant reminder to stay present and in the sound center. Happy New Year.
Dear Sam, Thank you for being there for us all! Best wishes of realising your goals and staying healthy in 2025. I will try to do the same - joining in about "if this was the last year of my life" attitude.
Thank you Sam. If you read these messages, I think you are a brilliant man, with an astounding philosophy. Why aren't there more people like you who have a voice.
Happy New Year Sam. You are a special academic with a clear vision regarding our troubled world. Thank you for your contribution to our humanity.
It is something so refreshing, calming and relaxing with these solo versions of Sam.! Love you Sam and happy new year to all of you!

Well said Sam! Thank you very much for this! I especially liked the part at 11:55 where you said _"but real meditation isn't something you do, it's something you cease to do."_ . I've been practicing mindfulness meditation for several years and this is the place where I'm at right now and I thank you for mentioning it!

Happy new year Sir, and best wishes for your happiness too. My journey through 2024 began, to a great extent, on your conversation with Swami Sarvapriyananda and it became a deep guided dive through Aparokshanubhuti with Swami. I have arrived at much the same point as you have articulated beautifully with your new year's resolution. So yes, I join you in that effort to seek clarity through acceptance and compassion and to share the gifts of that with as many as possible.
Sam, I wish you an interesting, exciting, constructive new year. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and often valuable insights.

Happy 2025,Sam! Thank you for all the great videos and the consistent intellectual enrichment !🥂🇿🇦
Thanks Sam and team. I still do not understand that if you are speaking on Iran and liberal values why it is that you invited illiberal Masoomeh (Masi) Alinejad and not ex Muslims like Atheist Republic founder Armin Navabi or at the very least Reza Pahlavi.

This is, in my opinion, a beautiful mind.
It would be if he didn't become intellectually trapped by his irrational hatred of Trump. It's almost as if he was brilliant, then a short circuit afflicted him, creating an intellectual pothole that he couldn't escape.
Love, Friendship and Creativity ❤
Sam is a good man. He tries to see things clearly. Being awake is sometimes a tricky thing. A beautifully decorated chocolate cake can lure us into thinking we are hungry, when we are not. Sam asks us all, including himself, to notice what room we are in. A good question.
Your fan from India, and this is the only podcast I listen to-it truly feels worth paying my attention. Happy new year.
Happy New year Sam and all subscribers 🙏 Also first or second ;p
A convicted felon cannot get a job at Walmart but can get a job as president.
Thanks for the reminders, Sam ❤
Thanks Sam, just for talking sense.
@@shawqiha Well said. I found this message particularly bipolar and wish i had skipped the first five minutes.
A voice of reason.
Happy new year, Sam!
Thanks a lot Sam❤
I’m choosing to live as if I knew this year would be my last on earth.” That is a powerful framing.
This is the stuff I read on candy wrappers.
Me too. I quit my job and am maxing out my credit card. Not proud of that but I've got lots of things to do and so little time!
If only men like Sam Harris would run for President.

@@hw_plainview1179 Thank you goodness you're here.
Sam Harris for president 🙏🏼
To clarify, you haven't spoken on it much as of late. You were, of course, an early sane voice on this topic. Come back! lol

What a clarifying resolution for the new year, thank you. I plan to join you!
Hey Sam, thank you for all that you do. Kind regards.
Happy New Year, Sam !
Indeed. What is a good life. Reluctant to listen because everything necessary and important will be said, for me, by Sam. What I believe Sam is saying is often felt by those older and aware of their mortality in a real and palpable way. Live life as if you are much older before you get there.
"What is the point of having 'fuck you' money, if you never say "fuck you"? No doubt, the top rhetorical question for 2025 (and beyond.)
Thank you for everything you do, Sam. Happy New Year 🎉 and may reason always prevail.

Sam had such a subversive take on it. Its in his nature
@@Impressive__ I would never say that because of the implications, but I believe it.

I much prefer this kind of podcast on RUclips.
With fascism upon us, it's important to live according to one's values, and to enjoy life hoping that the chaos will be minimal.

One of the best things that ever happens to me is to have found Sam. Thank you Sam!
Thank you for your kind message Sam, wishing you a prosperous new year.
"Naïveté", now I'm pretty sure that Sam is able to speak French.

14:27 "Don't you see how every experience, no matter how pleasurable or intense, gets distorted by your mental efforts to try to grasp it, secure it, prolong it, rehearse it, narrate it, compare it, change it?"
Why, yes, I do see. That was the point of those efforts! What good is flavored water and other ephemera without some sort of attitude or evaluation, perception of beauty, conceptual overlay, etc?
thx for your work sam , lead on young man
Happy new year! Thanks for always sharing interesting ideas!
🥰😍🤩 It's been a struggle for me to find my way since Nov. 5th. This helped. Thank you!
Which part of Jan. 6th Sam’s statement could be wrong?
@@freedomlife3623 Every part could be wrong or at least exaggerated. I'm not saying that it is - we are all speculating. But we should at least extrapolate from the most likely case, not the worst case. Trump and Musk are clearly not as bad as Sam pretends. The case for Kamala being much worse is very strong. I'm still a big fan of Sam, and our views are aligned on almost every other subject - especially the dangers of Islam (the worlds biggest problem IMHO).
Happy New Year!
America is on a cliff. The question is will they jump with Trump or will they recoil in horror at the thought of destroying their country.
America jumped off the cliff by embracing open borders insanity, legalized theft in big cities and biological men in women’s private spaces. Trump is the antidote to the woke madness that was already destroying America.
