On top of that, Very Good Butchers this week leaves their investors high and dry while they make off like bandits.
So what in the hell is going on in the plant-based food industry?! Let's talk.

What you said at the end: exactly. The thinking in the industry is that “market based solutions” are what will save the world. They won’t. What will change the world is activism. Products are good insofar as they help ease the transition for people, but ultimately, the only thing that will make lasting change for animals, people, and planet is activism. It’s the only thing that has every worked historically. And all the “impact investors” in plant based - what percentage of them are vegan? Maybe less than 1%. Walk the talk, I say. You can be sure the next thing I do will have even more of an activist angle.

"Hell yeah, I'm taking my shit back..."
    Exactly! 😀
Much of Miyoko's appeal to me is that she seemed to make it clear the company was a vegan company. Her support of sanctuaries and other animal rights issues seems to be how she's always led. It was one of the more pricey vegan products I picked up on occasion (usually around holidays or events). Obvously, I hope Miyoko and Lisa Bloom are able to hit them financially...because that seems to be all they understand.

Great insights. I feel so sorry for Miyoko. She has always been an ethical creator and her activism and message is strong.

Not sure about the book sales. Pretty sure she still holds stakes in the creamery, she did make a post urging people not to boycott.

This is so sad. Perfect example of why corporate greed is so toxic and damaging. I hope Miyoko wins her case! Its HER business and life's work, the idea that anyone can fire her or accuse her of stealing her OWN work is so illogical! 🤯😔

Another great 3 min Thursday on a Friday! You always hit the nail on the head. We should call you Jake the hammer Lol no, seriously, capitalism and advocacy don’t play well together. We see it over and over again. I hope we see Miyoko win the good fight, and we honestly believe that she is living her ethics. Unfortunately, boards and investors don’t seem to care about what’s ethically right anymore. Thanks again for a thoughtful take on the subject.

I have apostrophe confusion! Miyoko's suing Miyoko's suing Miyoko's? WHAT?! I've been having trouble finding Just Egg here--at three different stockists it's like the product never existed, tag gone, shelf space gone, ghosted!--so I went to their Twitter and found that other people were having this issue, and that the spokespersons responding were using the _same language_ Eat Just used when phasing out their wonderful mayo without letting on to consumers. And I also learned they're laying people off despite earnings improving. Corporate stupidity strikes again! Agree that focusing on increasing plant-based food products/companies is the wrong approach, as, apart from its being unpredictable, it's not the goal nor the means to the goal. Thanks for posting!

excellent video. i know squat as well, but i've watched my share of startups come and go through the decades here in the bay area. comparing things to the recent gig economy companies, aside from the fact that they have literally saved me from homelessness, there seemed to be no viable business plan from day one. then you do an IPO, everybody makes big bucks, and what happens after that nobody really cares. the fact that a non-functioning (not in the black, anyway) biz can even do an IPO leaves me shaking my head. once i heard how much the Saudis dumped into Uber, my lightbulb went off. They are not there to make money. There are there for other reasons. What reasons I have no idea, although you can cull a LOT of info from Uber customers.

Agree. Sad to watch the shelfs getting less space for vegan products. seen this happen lately in the grocery stores I usually go to. But if they don't sell of course they don't keep it in stock. Horrible how Miyoko has been treated. But not surprised as some ppl do anything to make money. Good she's fighting back!

Getting financing from these investor groups is like going to a loan shark with similar consequences. Perhaps crowd funding would work better or an employee owned model like Bob's Red Mill?

All of this is such bullshit. I stand with Miyoko and am excited about what she has in the works - that fills a big need and is not related to the retail/food market. She was the company and brand though, at least in my opinion, and I have a feeling this isn’t going to go well for the company now that they have booted her and treated her like shit.
Had no idea about the VGB either. Shady!

Hmm 🤔 every company I’ve worked for has screwed over their entry-level workers, so I don’t know if there is an ethical company no matter what they’re selling. But I do know I won’t be buying any Miyoko’s products going forward.

There are many, mostly 'unsexy' brands, and some interesting related case studies (i.e. where owners attempted to make their corporations cooperatives but the workers refused because they really just wanted to be told what to do & not carry responsibilities), but none I can particularly think of entirely within the vegan realm.
