I have watched many videos on this topic that have not worked. I am not an IT person but at work in the land of the blind the one eye man is king. I have wanted to do this but never came across a concise and to the point instructions. Thank You
Thank you for uploading this video! It is a shame that Microsoft does not offer a Local Account as an option anyone can select by clicking one button...
Thanks Leo for the video! I appreciate the info. It is bull-crap that we have to go through all of these steps just to use a local account on a computer that we bought with hard earned money. This was not the case years ago. Thanks again!
@@nairbo1984Yeah, really, it works … oh my, I thought it’s The End if system does not respond on Shift + F10, bot no, it really works if press Fn + Shift + F10

Thank you! Very helpful. I was trying the F10 commands, but was getting stuck. Your video showed that I needed to do them earlier than I had been. Thank you.
Today, 11/10/24 I set up my new HP. Laptop following your instructions and was successful opening with a Local account! I had to use the fn key + shift+f10. However, everything else went very smoothly! Leo, I sincerely thank you for your excellent video!!!
Thanks, Leo, I needed to set up a reinstalled laptop for a relative and didn't want to use my personal Microsoft account as it seemed to pull in some saved settings. Your approach worked perfectly, with the Fn + Shift + F10 modification mentioned in other comments. Brilliant!
Excellent video. I have had to install Windows 11 for 3 family members over the past year. Each time was an exercise in frustration, particularly when a fully qualified system throws the infamous ”This PC doesn’t meet the minimum systems requirements for running Windows 11”
Great video, just got a new dell laptop and couldn't use it without signing in which I don't want. The older win11 wasn't like this. You saved me!!! I miss the old WinXP.
This has saved my life! The school I manage bought Surface tablets that I couldn't build in the normal way. I needed to get in to join them to the domain network manually. I couldn't sign in as the school does not have Microsoft Intune set up yet. Without this I could never have set them up for the school.
thanks, this worked perfectly as of august 29, 2024. btw, if you find that shift + f10 isn't opening the command prompt, try using the fn key (at bottom left of the keyboard for me) + shift + f10
Worked like a champ. Thank you very much, Leo. Your videos are very much appreciated. We need to enjoy local accounts while we can! They won't last forever--no vendor lock-in!
As of 11/1/2024 this procedure still works, as others have mentioned, with the addition of fn+shift+F10 at the Windows command prompt. Mille Grazie Leo and to everyone else!!
Before connecting to the internet, I usually delete the programs that otherwise would be installed once the internet is on. Xbox and "free" games, for example. Also, there are telemetry things that you didn't disable during the installation cause you weren't given an option, so I'd recommend going to your settings in order to double-check.
Thanks so much! I still have to try this once my computer is fixed. The hard drive needed to be wiped and i have a feeling i will be on Win11 when i get it back so hopefully this method will work and i won't have bloatware taking up space
This is an extremely helpful video. I just got a brand new PC and didn't try to connect to the Internet to perform these steps. So I assume at this point in the process it is ok to connect to the Internet ? 4:45 in the video
For some reason, when I attempt this on my laptop I can't bring up the command prompt. I even attach an external keyboard and attempt the SHIFT + F10, and the cursor turns into a circle for half a second. Any ideas?
Do you have to use an installer? I just bought a new laptop and it obviously already has win 11 installed. Also, do I have to be online when setting up a local account? I also do not want a password. Can I just leave this blank and skip it? Thanks so much for helping us!
It worked, thank you. However, the ipconfig /release command did not work for me. I had to physically unplug my router. Then I was finally able to get to the "I don't have internet" option. And from there everything else worked.
If I ever went back to home Windows, I'd like to have the option to do a local account, but also with something similar to the Win 2000 look. My work Windows 11 PCs have so much helpful junk that gets in my way of doing my job. No, MS, I don't need to see my news or weather panel sliding in from the side! Stop it!!
After all of this, just before it asks for local account name, it goes back to the Microsoft sign in page. I manually went and turned off my wifi router and it worked.
Microsoft can't actually kill the local account because there are still far too many situations in which a machine should never be internet connected. There are also a few where an internet connection would be flat out illegal. I'm also not sure if the current crop of MS programmers could remove it, despite their best efforts at hiding it.
Thanks it works! but Leo do u think all these bypasses are intentional by microsoft as some corporation that use windows might want to stick to local accounts?
Given that they keep taking them away I'm certain they're not intentional. Corporations may have other ways, but generally do NOT use local accounts, but rather corporate accounts.
To clarify, corporations do use a local administrator account for initial setup. This setup process includes things like joining the workstation to a domain server. The domain server can also be a login server or there can be a separate server that handles domain logins. So when Leo says "corporate accounts," he is referring to a domain server.
It worked today on a new HP laptop (Nov. 4, 2024). Thanks, Leo! I'm worried about what they are going to do going forward. Seems like the deal with Microsoft is that you can have Windows 11 for free, but they can have your data. I have no interest in backing up my data to OneDrive. Windows 11 also severely limited the supported backup options vs. Windows 10, so my deskside tower PC is using the Windows 7 backup. Are they going to close this last option, and then harvest my data when I relent? I'm a bit upset with Microsoft right now since my 2018 high-end gaming laptop is not eligible for W11 because Gen 7 CPUs are mostly not supported. I wish they had told me that when I bought it! It's a perfectly capable high-end laptop on W10, just 6 years old!
Microsoft keeps closing the methods that let you setup with a local account, so previous methods no longer work. Some things that worked with 22H2 won't work on 24H2

Thank you for this. There will always be a way. If Microsoft closes this door, people will open a new one. Every piece of technology, without exception, is imperfect.
Thanks for the video. I get to go try to help my folks set up a new pc today and was looking for exactly this. Is there some kind of legal response to this continued garbage. I don't want to be that guy but wouldn't requiring a microsoft account mean that microsoft could simply turn off/delete my account and make it impossible for me to use my computer. Then there's also the TPM requirement removing the ability to get the data off of the drive. Not wanting to sound like I'm only here to complain but this just seems like it's specifically done to worsen the customers experience and exercise unnecessary control over someone elses data.
