Gold medallist Emily Seebohm 'happy to finally have a decision' on transgender athletes

- The peak body for swimming, FINA, has made a historic decision to effectively ban most transgender women from participating in female competitions.
Three-time Olympic gold medallist Emily Seebohm says she is “happy to finally we have a decision” on transgender athletes as it allows swimmers to see where the sport will be going in the future.
“I’m really supportive of the open category that they are suggesting that they are going to bring into competition,” she told Sky News Australia.
“It gives a chance for everyone to be involved in our sport, I love my sport I want to share it with everyone so let’s get everyone involved and let’s just keep it fair.”
Congrats to all you beautiful real biological women athletes. This should have have never happen in the first place.

The reality is that no cis gendered women are losing out to trans athletes. In the last 20yrs of inclusion - the Olympics, the Common Wealth games, the IAAF world championships, the Winter Olympics - exactly 1 Olympic trans female athlete in the history of the human race/professional sport with no trans medals, no trans sponsorships, no trans prize money.

There is no discrimination happening here. Lia and other trans athletes are more than welcome to continue to compete in their on sex class as they should. Their desire to self identify is not fair on girls and women, and it’s not scientifically backed. You would have to be blind to not see that.
Stop trying to equate feelings to fairness. It is not the same thing. And if that IS your only point, there is a distinct lack of care about how it makes the women and girls feel that are having their entire existence hijacked.

That's a hard fact which you will never be able to counter. There are currently ZERO elite trans women athletes in the world out of circa 4 billion women. ZERO is a hard statistic to deny. Trans women have NO sponsorship deals in sport either. There's also been exactly 1 trans female Olympian in the history of competitive sport - she failed to even start, came stone last, witnessed by billions.
Lia Thomas won a single semi competitive Ivy League race, so what, trans women should be allowed to do so if they meet regulations (which solely exists to ensure fairness) and qualify, that's the entire point of meaningful competition and it's the same criteria asked of all athletes. Only trans women have to pass far more demanding medical scrutiny and a huge amount of baseless hatred just to step up to the starting line, so good on her for overcoming that mountain of abuse. Notice you failed to mention how Lia was convincingly beaten by cis women and a trans guy in the following competition?? Or that her personal best in the race you mentioned is still a gargantuan 8 seconds off Katie Ladeky's own time for the same distance!
Maybe look up the origins of sports segregation - it was never about protecting women, it was about protecting men's rights, sports and their fragile egos.
This is all moot now that FINA baselessly banned trans women, despite IOC guidelines and 20yrs of sporting precedence. Countries that don't recognise LGBT people (some with the death penalty) or even women's rights got a vote in this ban. Let that sink in.
As a side note - the Common Wealth Games 2022 has just started, exactly how many trans athletes qualified to participate out of the circa 4000 athletes?? oh that's ZERO. I'm not a mathematician but I'm noticing a trend here right?

Making a separate category is much better for everyone because the age 12 cutoff for trans swimmers could push more parents and children to transition earlier, which we now know is nothing less than child abuse and devastating to their lives.

The female athletes who came in after Thomas should get the chances to compete in the Olympics. His records should be erased and the women who placed after him should be moved up on the records. They could start competitions where only transwomen athletes can compete. But who would compete if they know they will not automatically win.

It depends. If a male child has identified as a girl for most of her childhood, then I think puberty blockers are appropriate. Once you've had testosterone in your system, the effects can't be reversed.

the idea of an open category correctly levels the playing field. Imo someone who transitioned after puberty while testosterone is raging through their body has an unfair muscle development stage (just my own opinion). They should retroactively amend the results from all the swimming contests that “Lia” swam in and move all its results into this open category. Also they should ask for the hardware it won in exchange for participation certificates so the hardware can be sent on to the biological females that would move up a place.

For decades men and women who were doping weren't allowed to compete in sports, and certainly not in Olympic events. How is allowing men pretending that they're women to compete with women any better than doping? This is a sound decision.
That was my thought as well. Its basically the new version of doping. And technically they’re still taking a drug, exogenous estrogen. All hormones are steroids! They’re literally taking steroids.
