  • Well, I was told this would work, straight from the horses mouth as it were👀
    Fair to say, its got disaster written all over it🤢
    Ordered the correct stuff according to the tin of oil I normally use, we wait with baited breath on the outcome!
    Will I be re-cladding this pod before it is offered for sale?
    If I do, it'll be something completely different to cedar, so last year darling!

    Just to share my experience - I used the very expensive Owatrol Textrol HES from new on my Cedar and had the exact same problem, after one winter the cedar was greying and had black spot mould all over. I asked Owatrol for advice but the bleach and their wood cleaning product had no affect on the mould or greying so I decided to sand the whole garden room with a good sander attached to an extractor and using 80 grit paper. I was advised by Wood Finishes Direct to use two coats of Barrettine Wood Preserver and then use an oil product, they suggested Barrettine but I have had good results with Mannings Premium deck oil so I applied two coats of that, its very easy to use. After the very wet last winter the Cedar looks great and water still beads up and runs off the surface. So that works. My intension is to give it a coat of Mannings premium deck oil once a year, less than 2 hours work.

    I used white vinegar, sprayed it on a sunny day and left it a couple of days and the mould just dissolved off the wood.

    Found your channel recently and have to say thank you so much for an excellent resource! Your build guides have shown me so much. Hopefully I’m going to do a much better job at rebuilding me garden telescope roll off roof observatory thanks to you. Lots of people into Astro these days and there is a market out there for garden observatories :-)

    Liam this seems to happen to all exterior wood in my experience it’s a waste of time and money it lasts the season and then you get the mould better off with hardy plank or paint it it’s a shame you should go back to some of your builds and see what they look like now would be interesting many thanks

    I was faced with this 2 years after building a cedar garden room. I used sodium percarbonate (laundry whitener) with washing detergent to strip the oil and restore the colour. I had to do it a few times as the oil was well bedded in. Then I used oxalic acid and rinsed and rinsed and rinsed. It now looks as new- all mould gone and colour even.

    I had used ronseal on a part of the cladding but didn't like the result, so i re did the whole side using all three owatrol products, aquanet first to strip the oil, then net-trol to neutralise the aquanet. Let it dry for a couple of days, and then use owatrol oil. Worked well on feather edge.

    Had similar issue with siberian larch
    powerwashed 1st this removed a lot of the dirt greyness in wood then applied aquanett left for 5-10 mins powerwash off again
    Next day used bleach 1/4 water mix leave for 20mins powerwash off
    Following day i used nett troll leave for 15 -20 mins & powerwash off again.
    allowed wood to dry before restaining lot of work but came up quite good

    White vinegar is good for getting rid of mold better than bleach

    Hi Liam, give Timmersol a go, £55 for 5 litres but reckon it will leave a good finish after sanding

    I guess the bleach depends on how strong it is to start with. 14-15% hypochlorite (pool cleaner) undiluted worked wonders on my patio.

  • @adzhx

    White vinegar actually kills the mould and stops it regrowing

  • @hoog111
    @hoog111 2 месяца назад +1

    I think the wood needed to be drier before you oiled it, possibly test with moisture meter. Now all trace of oil must be removed, bleach to remove black wash and allow to dry before moisture test, when ok, re-oil. Good luck mate.

    Just an idea mate, have you considered using a jet wash connected up to a hot tap, I do it for all my outside cleaning purposes, and then if there are still some stubborn bits, I use TFR (Traffic Film Remover) it works wonders.
    I suppose for the mould, if TFR doesn't work, just put Bleach in instead, my bet, the pressured hot water would get rid of the mould anyway.

      a jet wash at a distance to be aggressive would rip cedar fibres to bits.

    When it comes to timber treatments there seem to be more applications than you can shake a stick at four every species of wood
    I hope you find a solution after all this time and effort 👍

    How old is that garden room? i.e. how long did it take to turn from good to bad.

    • @thegardenroomguru
      @thegardenroomguru  2 месяца назад +3

      maybe two years, the other side looks sound as it never had any sun on it, thats the problem with cedar, you either let it grey naturally, or you fight it, or if your like me, and lives too busy, you ignore what you can't see and carry on🤦🏻‍♂️

    I'd say it's a shite product! Doesn't cedar have enough of it's own oil in it not to need treating......that's it used and is so expensive otherwise you'd just use pine if you needed to treat it!

    • @thegardenroomguru
      @thegardenroomguru  2 месяца назад

      the treatment is purely too slow the greying process which is inevitable.
