Dudes, I’m sitting here in my home just north of San Francisco, CA, USA. We’re surrounded by thick smoke from countless wildfires amidst a global pandemic. It’s warm inside but we can’t open the windows. No air conditioning. Band can’t rehearse. No end in sight. Feels like the End Times. But then, through the smoke, like a mighty LED from the heavens, 53 brand new minutes of TPS. The show is a total escape to a world I love. I look forward to it every week, but this week... it just feels different. It means more. It’s a freakin beacon of hope. A reminder that the flow state and good times will come again. Thanks, guys, I needed that.

That Vox/Jazzmaster combo actually unintentionally comes up with a really good bit of advice, if you are finding your amp too bright and harsh you can just get enough gain to get the treble to overdrive rather than simply turning down the treble controls on the amp!

Hey guys, loving the video as always. I've got a question for Dan. Do you have any model of telecaster that you would recommend looking for that isn't custom shop? Looking for something with a nitro finish which will age with me over time. Thanks in advance!
I'm a drummer, but I collect amps as a hobby. Garnet amps are my favorite. Our guitar player traded me a Traynor Bassmaster for a Mann (Garnet stencil, made for Canadian retail shops) 212 2 6l6. It's the best amp we've ever heard. These are fine hand wired Canadian amps. Garnets and Traynors can be had for pennies on the dollar to old Vox, Marshall or Fender amps. Don't know if many crossed the pond.
I was looking at that Memory man (dun-duh-dun-da-duhn :O) when I realised that I had a question about ALL "Tap-Tempo" delays. Do some, or all of them, allow you to tap in the tempo BEFORE activating the delay? On the down-side, apparently now I need at least 3 new amps, a guitar with filtertrons, another boost pedal, a Tele (I'm not really into them, but apparently....) a semi-acoustic, a patterned red carpet, some clangy stools (not in the digestive tract way) and there's probably a pear tree outside your building which has a partridge sat in it :O)
After watching your episode with Greg Koch I feel as if that is an amp that could have fit in this line up. I can do so much, but any one of those areas of it's tone could stand on its own as well in this Top 10. But the harmonic trem, reverb, and multiple built in gain stages seems to a pretty killer package.
The V140 Super Duchess sounds like the perfect Blackface without the flaws to me… Maybe a substitute for my sometimes cumbersome Super Reverb…? Opinions? Should pull off SRV style tones nicely, shouldn’t it?!? 🤔
Since I'm clearly not above a little flag-waving... I'd be curious whether the TPS guys' gear travels have brought them across any amps from the Great White North? Traynor, Revv, Garnet, Texosound, Kingsley (I know Dan already loves their pedal work), Wizard... I could go on.

It gets progressively less effective as you turn it up. So when it’s cranked it makes no difference. At low volumes is where it’s horrible. We think it was actually a mistake in spec. Sounds soooooo much better with a smaller cap.
"If we owned them, a Deluxe Reverb, Princeton Reverb, tweed Deluxe and tweed Bassman would be in the list. For reasons we can’t explain, we don’t own any of these amps." Does that mean you both sold the 5e3 clones you built?
When I actually get the chance to turn up my Blues Jr at home (small children in the house) I hear hints of amazing tones that surprise me. That being said, I can't even imagine what it's like to be in the room with the amps and sounds in this video. The physical nature of sound just doesn't translate to RUclips.
I know we're talking amps today, but I've come from a rewatch of the "money no object" video, and Blue is now so very nearly just as lovely as the 61. 49:07 is so (with apologies to Blackstar) The Sound In My Head. I kept expecting Mick to break into Love Struck Baby.
@@adamricard9410 It sounds great, but it is REALLY quiet. You can hear your strings over the amp if you strum hard. I usually play it on the second lowest setting at home. It's loud enough to feel good, but not so loud that it will upset the neighbors (unless you live in an apartment). I've turned off the attenuation and run the amp at full volume before and to my ears, it doesn't sound any better than when it is attenuated. Tone King killed it with the Iron Man II.
Divided by 13 CCC 9/15 is still the best amp I’ve ever played. Sounds cool on it’s own, absolutely shines in a mix and takes pedals great. Love the California Tweed and Two Rock as well.
Agreed - I must also say that evrytime I hear one of those T.Kings I try to imagine how it would sound paired with my fav guitar : a reverend Crosscut. On the neck pickup, volume around 20%, bass control at 0, tone open just by a tiny 20 -30 % gives a small awsome galaxy of sweet spots I discoverd just recently on a Laney Super Cub 12! ( Volume 2-3 Treble = 0 - Middle = 9 - Bass = 0 - Gain = 5 )
A 1987x !!! Killer!!! If you can not live with it and be happy ...you do hot play Rock ...you play around with it ...but you do not play it! I thought I new better twice ...and now at 73 I have my third!!! It is not broke and it doesn't need to fixed. All those high priced amps merely put audio cosmetics on a sound that doesn't need makeup to be beautiful. It already is beautiful!
Epic!! I didn’t hear a bad sound. I could easily live with any of these amps. Was surprised you never mentioned the Laney 30bl. As always guys great episode thank you!!
I think I've watched this episode like 5 times..already.. I come back to it, every once in a while.. It is one of my favourite ones. The Two Rock sounds amazing.. And loved the Tone King. But that AC30.... Bloody hell...! PS: and paired with a Twin Reverb... It's heaven. I can't thank you enough for this. I really really like this channel...and this episode rocks. 😉 Kudos from Portugal
I just watched the first 3 minutes of this with the playback speed at 0.75x by mistake. Everything seemed fairly normal except that Dan appeared drunk.
@@TheEchelon They are. But the amp architecture itself is solid state, same as a Randall, Jazz Chorus, or Peavey Bandit or Lab Series etc. The issue is that everyone describes the Katana as a digital or modelling amp, which it is not.
@@whatwouldhousedo5136 Mostly because they don't understand the nuances between digital and solid-state. People often overlook the fact that most pedals have transistors in them, the same things solid-state amps have in them. It's an odd world, that of a guitarist.
Yeah I think I like the AC-30 the best. It DOES surprise me a bit I guess. I love mine but I also LOVE my JCM-800 but tonight? That Vox with Mick is just stellar. Bravo
Seen one of the new HiWatt Custom 20s? Saw Rhett Shull rocking one recently and they do sound pretty spectacular. Not quite up to a vintage 100W job of course but maybe a little more of the Hiwatt "thing" only usable.
I like the Marshall and Hiwatt the most for my type of tone but also love the AC30 and Matchless HC30 about the same for my second fav type of tone. Also liked the Dutchess and Imperial.
I have my own favourite amp. Admittedly it's because I paid $20 for it and it works.. But a Peavey Bandit Silverstripe is a damn good amp for just about anybody.

How is it on its quietest setting attenuation for home use?
@@adamricard9410 It sounds great, but it is REALLY quiet. You can hear your strings over the amp if you strum hard. I usually play it on the second lowest setting at home. It's loud enough to feel good, but not so loud that it will upset the neighbors (unless you live in an apartment). I've turned off the attenuation and run the amp at full volume before and to my ears, it doesn't sound any better than when it is attenuated. Tone King killed it with the Iron Man II.
I got a Blues Jr and I'm just starting to love that one and now this episode drops. Great!
OK, so it's at 105 dB that Dan and Mick put one finger in an ear... At 106 dB (with much high-end), Dan added the second finger (different ear)! 🙉
Divided by 13 CCC 9/15 is still the best amp I’ve ever played. Sounds cool on it’s own, absolutely shines in a mix and takes pedals great. Love the California Tweed and Two Rock as well.
The Tone King Imperial sounded so incredibly musical !!
Agree 100%!
We don’t have one. If we did, it’d probably be in.
You guys forgot the Super Reverb and the Fender deluxe reverb.
OMG how beautiful is that Matchless! Bank balance is shaking in its boots....
Kudos from Portugal
Morning coffee in the States with some TPS! I can dig it!
I just watched the first 3 minutes of this with the playback speed at 0.75x by mistake. Everything seemed fairly normal except that Dan appeared drunk.
Looks at my Kitana...
"We're still OK, Buddy."
Just kidding, I don't own a digital amp.....
your loss. Fripp and Bellew aprove them.
It's not a digital or modelling amp, it's solid state- there is a big difference. Not sure why everyone comments on Katanas as being digital.
@@whatwouldhousedo5136 Pretty sure all the built-in effects are digital..
My favourite sound of the video is the 335 into the Mesa. Translates into my budget as an Epiphone or Ibanez and a sub £1k tweed 🙄
I love that Mick and Dan's diffing tastes in tone is revealed all by Mick's facial expressions sometimes 😂🥴
.....Orange Rockerverb MK III 100 Watt............
The Strat + The Two Rock = tone heaven
I love my 1996 Matchless HC-30. Thanks for the video gents!!
The mesa with dan's tele. That's just the tone oh man.
Awesome post guys!! THANK YOU!!
I’m waiting for my California Tweed to arrive as I ordered a different colour and wicker front. I haven’t even tried it but its a Boogie and Im confident I wont get any complaints from my #1 (1992 SRV strat). This was the BEST Demo so far and after watching all of the RUclips posts it captured the sound I wanted to hear. GREAT WORK AS always and some great choices there with the other amps you selected👍👍👍👍
One year and three months ago I went to Charlie Chandler's and bought an awesome 2001 Fender Custom Shop Strat. The service was so great and the guys there were so nice, I'm not sure I would want to go anywhere else to get gear, repairs and set-ups. I'm really glad you guys have gone there too because its an awesome store and Charlie is the best!
great episodes... now u only have to your top 10pedals (for each one of you..) 😉🤘🎸🙏
