I met Eddie Kramer. He told me that on Alive!, there were tons of overdubs, but Peter's drums were all live, no overdubs. He also said Peter had the best singing voice of the four.
Paul is so worried about the others outshining him when he really shouldn't...because they can't outshine him...face it he wrote some of the greatest rock n roll songs ever written...he should be satisfied with that. But he almost spoils his own greatness by not realizing his own greatness. You don't need to put the others down to make yourself look great Paul...you are great!
I'm very conservatives and straight edge. I don't get upset with Gene and Paul wanting things professional and not messed by drugs and booze. At the same time I think it's very clear Gene and Paul are very upset and jealous that Ace is clearly the best musician of the group and the biggest hit the group ever had was from Peter.
Ace had “it”…..he was so spaced out that he was likable and as a soloist I’ve always thought that his solos were fluid, melodic, hummable, and his vibrato was perfect
Even if Ace was conscious for even 20 mins a day, to have someone that has created some of the most memorable guitar patterns and solos in rock history is worth to keep in my opinion.

Ace was a big influence in the 70s. The problem is he never really got better. I mean he still plays the same old tired licks. Ace and Paul inspired me to play. Many others. Most of us were better guitar players than Ace by the 80s. I just saw him a year ago. It was embarrassing how bad he was.

Peter was no Bonham.... And Paul was no Robert Plant. But Eddie Kramer dropped the ball on production for this album. I believe the sound they were ultimately going for was finally achieved with Side 4 of Alive 2 and Ace's '78 solo album. But i think Ezrin should have produced R & R Over
Admit it or not, KISS cemented their legend in the years 1973-1978; beyond that, though not all bad by any means, what they produced afterwards on its own would not have changed that fact much, one way or the other!..
That is so far from the truth. I've played in bands, dealing with band mates that can't stay sober or show up and do their parts is frustrating. Paul and Gene always put the fans first. Ace and Peter not so much. That's why they couldn't keep their place in the band.
That live scene at 1:45 captures the essence of Kiss at their best. Pause it and take a look at the crowd when the camera pans out. Every kind of person, completely absorbed in the moment.
The story of KISS as a band goes through all of the best movie or book genres: A thriller, comedy, drama, romance, sleaze, mystery and above all a soap opera. There are plenty of bands with interesting histories but KISS are one of the most fascinating and they are a great example of how difficult it is to get the top and remain there.
Not Jazz but Swing and Big Band; Peter was a swing and big band style drummer and it fit with the stuff KISS was doing at that time. As for Paul saying Peter didn't play a musical instrument, Drums are the Oldest Musical Instrument in History but they are Not a String or oral used instrument. PS Paul and Gene have Always whined about everybody in KISS except themselves.
John Bonham and Ian Paice were also massively influenced by jazz drummers like Max Roach. That’s why all those guys sounded so great. Peter Criss was great for Kiss, playing wise at least. And Paul Stanley was hardly a virtuoso…
Peter's drumming was great and gave Kiss their swing and down to earth rock & roll sound. If Paul is too high on himself to even admit that, there's not much to be done to put him back in touch with reality.

I spent a few hours with Ace last August at one of his shows. He was f'kin horrible. I played better than him when I was 18. $85 I'll never get back...
When that Ace solo record came out, we all realized that Ace was the force that gave them cred; that his energy achieved the critical mass that made them legit rockers.
They surely continued without Peter & Ace…. If Ace & Peter were the great musicians people claim they are , they would have been much more successful than Paul & Gene….. Ace & Peter could have been much better but let stardom go to their heads. They never grew as musicians. Paul definitely acknowledged Ace’s musicianship. But Ace ‘s head blew up. I love Ace but his guitar playing basically stagnated not long after he left KISS. He could have and should have become a much better musician.

In all fairness and as a drummer myself the post recording “sound” can be fine tuned in mixing. Peter is a world class drummer and his “sound” is in the mix.
@@tt55899 I'm not a drummer but I'll have to agree with shoto here. Peter is a natural drummer, without him and Ace, the band definitely lost their sound and never recovered. Vinnie breathed some life into them but the sound had changed, it was lost.

Rock n roll Over is one of the best Kiss album, and all members, Paul, Gene, Ace and Peter do an excellent musical job in that recording, and it's so tight. Peters drumming is excellent and groovy and great sounding. Recording process in studio is a hard work, and the result in the specific Rock n Roll Over is GREAT. Just listen to that album, now THAT is THE sound of REAL KISS!

It still irks him to this day and it is why Paul & Gene NEVER wanted Peter & Ace back in the band at the end... Bonham had a fantastic signature sound and so did Peter Criss. Both unique and exciting to listen to. How ironic that he claims they wanted that Ludwig drum sound, but it would not have suited the KISS sound at all. Whilst I am at it, does anyone recall the incredible JHB taking any lead vocals or unison or harmony singing live? I don't. Whilst he was an amazing and uniquely gifted rock drummer, he never attempted to play and sing live as Peter did from the get-go..! I bet if Paul listens back to this he would cringe at his mean-spirited and spiteful remarks. His review of Ace is as bad, his unique voicings and style were fundamental part of the appeal of the KISS sound. He couldn't come up with solo parts to order, so what? Yes, Aces solos and playing are excellent. All of the original members did a great job and cemented THE sound of KISS! They made it together.
If you hear the face melting solo on "Rocket Ride", you realise Ace was worth every paycheck.

Paul blames Peter and Ace for everything wrong with KISS and himself. Paul calls Peter the complainer, but the only one I hear complaining is Paul.

The story of KISS as a band goes through all of the best movie or book genres: A thriller, comedy, drama, romance, sleaze, mystery and above all a soap opera. There are plenty of bands with interesting histories but KISS are one of the most fascinating and they are a great example of how difficult it is to get the top and remain there.
Peter’s heart and soul is jazz drumming. That rarely converts to the hard rock sound Paul wanted.
And it took them that long to work that out?
Not Jazz but Swing and Big Band; Peter was a swing and big band style drummer and it fit with the stuff KISS was doing at that time.
As for Paul saying Peter didn't play a musical instrument, Drums are the Oldest Musical Instrument in History but they are Not a String or oral used instrument.
PS Paul and Gene have Always whined about everybody in KISS except themselves.
Bill Ward was heavily influenced by jazz just like Peter Criss
John Bonham and Ian Paice were also massively influenced by jazz drummers like Max Roach. That’s why all those guys sounded so great.
Peter Criss was great for Kiss, playing wise at least.
And Paul Stanley was hardly a virtuoso…
Peter even took lessons with GeneKrupa!

Peter's drumming was great and gave Kiss their swing and down to earth rock & roll sound. If Paul is too high on himself to even admit that, there's not much to be done to put him back in touch with reality.
Actually producers who worked with Peter made him do parts over and over until he got them right. He got lazy and it showed.

A few years back I saw a guy that looked like ACE but knew it wasnt him but I told him he looked like ACE and he said "Im glad you dont think I look like Gene because he's an asshole"
I spent a few hours with Ace last August at one of his shows. He was f'kin horrible. I played better than him when I was 18. $85 I'll never get back...
When that Ace solo record came out, we all realized that Ace was the force that gave them cred; that his energy achieved the critical mass that made them legit rockers.
Without Peter and Ace Kiss would have not existed.They were the ones that made Kiss thrive

They surely continued without Peter & Ace…. If Ace & Peter were the great musicians people claim they are , they would have been much more successful than Paul & Gene….. Ace & Peter could have been much better but let stardom go to their heads. They never grew as musicians. Paul definitely acknowledged Ace’s musicianship. But Ace ‘s head blew up. I love Ace but his guitar playing basically stagnated not long after he left KISS. He could have and should have become a much better musician.

Peters voice was absolutely incredible - and Paul knew it I think secretly he envied that natural rasp I love Paul but come on his scream is nothing compared to Peters - listen to peter scream on Alive it’s really amazing and pierces and fully open voice - Paul is very very nasal -

In all fairness and as a drummer myself the post recording “sound” can be fine tuned in mixing.
Peter is a world class drummer and his “sound” is in the mix.

@@tt55899 I'm not a drummer but I'll have to agree with shoto here. Peter is a natural drummer, without him and Ace, the band definitely lost their sound and never recovered. Vinnie breathed some life into them but the sound had changed, it was lost.

Rock n roll Over is one of the best Kiss album, and all members, Paul, Gene, Ace and Peter do an excellent musical job in that recording, and it's so tight. Peters drumming is excellent and groovy and great sounding. Recording process in studio is a hard work, and the result in the specific Rock n Roll Over is GREAT. Just listen to that album, now THAT is THE sound of REAL KISS!
Ace is still writing and recording great new music. Kiss has not done that for decades.

This has jealousy written all over it.... Paul could never handle that Beth was their biggest single & that Ace's solo album was the best of the 4.. It still irks him to this day and it is why Paul & Gene NEVER wanted Peter & Ace back in the band at the end... The crowd would of roared & cheered more for Peter & Ace & that is 1 reason why they were NEVER invited back along with so many other stipulations that Peter & Ace would of said shove it up ya arse!!!!!

Beth was a huge hit! I still remember that song was played constantly on the radio and it sounds like it still pisses Paul off.
He's right, Peter could never play like John Bonham because he was PETER CRISS, and was more jazz based and had his OWN style, just like ONLY John Bonham could be John Bonham.
Even Jason Bonham is no John Bonham and he had the direct DNA and teacher.

No drummer has ever been as great as Peter Criss. Without him, there's no KISS. Not to mention his great voice. Baby Driver is also one of their best songs that they foolishly never played live. 😊

All this guy does is complain. Peters drums sounded “tinny” in a theater and that’s his fault? He isn’t a recording engineer. He’s a drummer. Not his job to get the mics right. One minute he is complaining about being run by a drill sergeant and the next, he misses the direction of that sergeant. Ace played amazing on RNRO as did Peter. Enough Stanley!

Even though it took time, Peter's voice was the best for Hard Luck Woman. And it was totally worth the effort.
Paul waited until everyone else wrote or cowrote their autobiographies then he wrote his to have the final say. You can be sure he skimmed over the other ones then counter pointed their stories

I saw KISS live twice, and only when Ace and Peter were a part of the band. Without them, it was just a glorified cover band to me.

Peter & ace both got carried away with success. If anyone’s egos got in the way it was theirs. Every kiss fan loves the original line up. But they carried on to have a fifty year career & so many great songs without both of them. Hats off to gene and Paul for keeping it going. Creatures of the night , I love it loud,lick it up ,war machine, heavens on fire, tears are falling , crazy crazy nights , who wants to be lonely, etc!!!!!! They both quit twice & it was their own decision.

I understand Paul’s frustrations with Ace and Peter, and I honestly see a lot of truth in what he narrates in his book, but I feel he could’ve done it with a lot more class and respect to both of them.
100% man! Of course the drugs and the problems and the tensions were real. But so is Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons' forever passive-aggressive bitterness and negativity toward Ace & Peter -- after the fact! I mean, it's not like either of them stopped P&G from becoming multi-millionaires. 'Nuff said...

"Baby Driver" was one of the better KISS songs of that era. And ACE DID become "one of the greats." I can totally understand how all four men could be completely infuriating to deal with, but Paul is ass about giving people credit where it's due.

Bob Ezrin was such a godsend to so many rock bands of the 70’s? His production qualities were unmatched.
Love Bob Ezrin. His work on "Destroyer", Alice Cooper "Billion Dollar Babies" and Pink Floyd "The Wall" is incredible and made their best albums.

Bob brought in Dick Wagner and together they pretty much wrote 90% of Destroyer. Bob took a full credit on DRC and a partial on Beth while Dick took a full on flaming youth and agreed on a studio salary for the rest of the albums guitar work.

Bob really doesn’t get recognized for the amazing writing, playing & top notch production that he sort of “ghosted” into these projects.

Much as I admire Paul Stanley, many of these comments are just idiotic, and he knows it. Peter couldn't play any instruments? What, firstly he plays the drums. They are a type of musical instrument. Secondly, he has a great singing voice, another type of instrument. What does he mean Peter is not JHB, course he's not, but there again nor is/was anyone else! Bonham had a fantastic signature sound and so did Peter Criss. Both unique and exciting to listen to. How ironic that he claims they wanted that Ludwig drum sound, but it would not have suited the KISS sound at all. Whilst I am at it, does anyone recall the incredible JHB taking any lead vocals or unison or harmony singing live? I don't. Whilst he was an amazing and uniquely gifted rock drummer, he never attempted to play and sing live as Peter did from the get-go..! I bet if Paul listens back to this he would cringe at his mean-spirited and spiteful remarks. His review of Ace is as bad, his unique voicings and style were fundamental part of the appeal of the KISS sound. He couldn't come up with solo parts to order, so what? Let's have him condemned for life then... There's thousands of great musicians and composers who have just the same problem and always will, it's part of being human! Just my tuppence-worth!
