This is not an anti-wing chun comment but, yes, this the right idea if you are pressure testing wing chun against wing chun in a wing chun context (accepted rules and framework of wing chun). That is to say that both opponents' action and reaction are going to be wing chun. In every example I have seen and experienced personally, the proponent of wing chun (and other styles of martial arts just so we don't pick on wing chun) become confused and out of sync when they have to fight outside of theirr context when their opponent starts doing things to which the WC stylist is not accustomed. The WC (or other stylist -- so as not to pick on wing chun) has difficulty adapting to, say, a boxer or muay Thai fighter who knows how to better control range using footwork. Was it Bruce Lee who once pejoratively said that wing chun is good for fighting inside an elevator? BTW, this is not a wing chun only problem although WC gets the brunt of negative comments. Many people who only do "sport only" Brazilian jiu-jitsu, for example, don't know what to do against a striker who also is good at grappling in certain situations -- e.g. an MMA opponent. I think for self-defence purposes, martial arts is one of the few things in life where it is better to be a jack-of-all-trades, than a specialist in only one thing. That's where Bruce Lee had it right when he encouraged people to experience everything, keep what is useful, and to throw away what is not. That's really the heart of MMA is it not? I will give credit to Gary Lam's school for recognizing the importance of dealing with full on punches. Afterall, it is still jarring to take a full or even semi contact punch with sparring gear and part of good self-defence is getting used to not folding under the pressure of a full on attack.
Dan you are a muppet. These are pressure tests for wing chun to wing chun. No one says they will be used in a real fight or that these people would punch like that in a fight. They are sensitivity drills. I have been doing wung chun for 3 years. I have had street fights and they wer over in seconds and i won all of them. I couldnt fight untill i learned wing chun as a base. I live in a dangerous lifestyle/place. I dont hate any other martial or fighting form, because i know, its fighting spirit and timimg that wins a fight. What i do hate is keyboard warriors. Its about the individual, not the fighting style. I just happened to have learned wc as my basic, and trust me it worked, just because i was confident enough, knew what to do and did it quick/first. Had i not have known that well. So there you go, it does work on the street. I didnt panic, i timed my attack/defence, and moved well. Why dont you use your time more productivly and train. I promised i wasnt going to do this on youtube, but i see it so often, and i know my sifus could really take you keyboard warriors down, weve seen them come to class and get taken down by 1 year students, kids even lol. Saturday night pub swingers make me laugh.

The helmets are "Daido Juku Helmets". They use them for full contact matches in Japanese Martial Arts for those of you wondering.

They aren't training to spar, a fight isn't a feel out process, it's a car crash. Sometimes sparring is detrimental
