One of the hardest jobs in America, and one of the most frustrating when the cans do not cooperate, or ppl leave heavy bags by the cans, or any number of BS 2000 times a day
That kind of shit is punishable where I live. You don't put metal pipes into a general garbage bin. It's stupid, potentially dangerous, potentially damaging to the truck, and against the law.
@@zorkan111 That is what the council or municipality in charge of the bin pickup route would like residents to comply with. Unfortunately they end up having to deal with stupid people who don't care to inquire about what they can put into their bins, and as a result, the garbage truck designer has to over-engineer the compactor mechanism to compensate for residents that don't think to check what should go into their bins. Metal object up to a certain size can actually be quite easily compacted, this is only due to the over-engineered compaction mechanism, and was never intended to be that way. It's easier and simpler for the authority involved to use compactors that will just compact the garbage, this is why most American compactor mechanisms use a large capacity blade or wall compaction mechanism, to simplify things and allow larger oversized objects to be pushed into the back. If designed correctly, the truck still stuffs the offending item into the back of the truck, to the point where it will fall out with the rest of the load. Most garbage is fairly easy to compact and some of it can even break apart if pushed against a rigid object, thus ensuring it goes through the compactor. It's when they have too much rigidity that problems happen, and the truck driver has to return to base to get oversized objects removed from the compactor body. Some compactors are so strong they will quite easily bale metal objects in garbage. Most don't. I will point out that it is on the authority governing the pickup requirements for the resident's bin to ensure that this is adequately policed and adequately monitored. Residents, most of the time, simply don't think, this is because they don't have the time to do it properly. Fines and retraction of bin services can help with this but mostly it's a matter of which contractor will have the equipment that will be able to handle heavy and difficult to compact trash items. It's a competition to find which contractor wants a really trashy contract!
I love how those machines don't bother putting the bin back where it came from just like when the blokes do it manually. Now that's attention to detail!
That's probably a big difference from country to country then, because back in the days, when it was all manual in my city (in The Netherlands), bins from a certain residential number of homes would be grouped together at a certain spot in the area, where the truck would stop and get all of them emptied in one go. But the workers would always put them back nicely packed the way they were before they arrived. The bins are still grouped in specific areas, but now all in one line, so the side-loader can easily grab them. Same as in the outer areas, where bins would be placed roadside: no matter automatic or manual collection, they would be put back where they were found. Especially the operators of the side-loaders in my city are good at putting them back at the kerbside, just centimeters where they picked them up from. It's more of a necessity here, as Dutch roads/streets are by far not as wide as most in the US.
Perfect example of an equipment which was in theory designed to make a process faster and easier, yet makes things worse tenfold. You can see the pain and agony in the operators moves.
Considering that 20 years ago EVERY trash can had to be manually emptied by workers, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the driver to get out of the truck ONCE IN A WHILE and deal with an issue. Workers have become way too entitled and lazy about stuff lately.
Where I lived until 1991, the trash truck was the rear load type. One driver, two guys hanging onto the rear to take the lids off the metal cans then dump them in. They were quite happy the day the town bought a new garbage truck, a Mercedes. I bet they loved telling people they drove a Mercedes all day for work. ;)
Been easier for the operators, if people hasn't overfilled them and put them so close together. And also, if they have had the lifting system we have in my part of Norway. Grabbing system looks like a hassle sometimes.
Yeah, I feel the same way about the grabber as well. It looks complicated (especially when bins are too close together) and judging by the fact a bin even falls in (which is such a rarity in my country (Netherlands) that I don't even know of a video of it and you usually get a letter from the city council stating that 'the truck unfortunately ate your bin. Within 2 days, someone from the city council will bring you a new one') Ours grab the bins at the ridge beneath the lid, and once they have hooked onto that ridge, a small arm rotates over the ridge, completely securing the bin to the arm, which also enables the operator to whack the living daylight out of a bin if they see (on CCTV) that some refuse is stuck inside the bin.
Bro the way some people pack their bins is crazy. Here in Australia, you would be warned and if you do it again, they would blacklist you from pickups. Plus they just need better standardised bins and better grabbers to make the process easier.
NYC has garbage everywhere laying around so have to have garbage men to pick up it up from the ground. a lot of lack of garbage discipline in NYC. stink
What the hell is wrong with some of these people loading their trash so high. The city should have rules. If the top of the trash lid isn't closed, then your trash won't be picked up. Buy another can!
It varies by region, but a single driver with the lift system is becoming the most common to prevent the driver from having to get out of the truck and risk getting injured. Some places still have a driver and 1 - 2 people on the back who manually lift and dump trash into the truck.
Man I couldn't do it. That one where the bin falls in " right you fucking c**ting piece of shit. I'm not gonna get you out. Don't care if they fire me. Shouldn't be such a retard and fall in!!!!"
I remember when the garbage men were a team one or two riders and one driver. And they actually handled the cans. Always had less trash blowing around the neighborhood as well
Ahhh my 4am feed of satisfying video I didn't know I needed 😌 I always tip my guys on larger items and Xmas hope they don't throw it out by accident with these new trucks.

Haha I woke up early the morning I loaded a garbage can with dirt and concrete chunks from my basement floor. It was a house I had out of state and didn't have any other way to take it to the dump before mixing and repouring it all by hand. The can had to weigh 600 pounds,I'm not sure. Probably more, I've shoved around a 600 pound generator and it wasn't as bad as that can. It took all of my 160 pounds to even get it to tilt and move. I never saw a garbage truck pitch over like 4-5 inches and hear the hydraulics grunt when picking up a can before 🤣🤣🤣 Dude didn't even blink, dropped the can and moved on.
I use to live in a trailer park when I was in Elementary, every Wednesday morning at 6:30 as the sun starts to rise 3 guys in a WM truck collect the park garbage, its a good feeling of perfect... Until the trailer park owner decided to take away the garbage cans and switch to just one of those big bins, the ones were garbage trucks with forks up front lift, and it was located at the end of the park so we all hated, especially when they overfill and they charge you extra on the lot rent

Other tricks, like putting heavy stuff on the bottom, is something people have to figure out on their own, tho.
O, and if we would get a new bin, it does come with a flyer, but I forgot what it says.
Pretty smooth closing that lid at 1:35
I couldn't imagine his reaction dropping the whole bin 😂
Happens all the time, you just crush it and keep going. They will get a new one
I work for Waste Management. I never saw so many cans being crushed or lost in the hopper. What makes things worse 1 driver is picking up trash that he drop with no gloves 🧤 that’s just nasty
The days of old when there were no cameras watching your every move. When you had to just deal with it and move on.
Lol are these all in Rhode Island 😂😂 I keep recognizing these trucks and areas and the MTG disposal trucks operate around here. Super funny
I'm surprised that newer truck didn't have a camera in the cab so the could see the bin is empty before putting it back.
Its an option. I've worked on garbage trucks for a while. Most new trucks do.
I'm surprised they don't at least have a stationary camera to look at the arm, or even a big mirror. Probably hard on the neck having to keep looking out each time.
One of the hardest jobs in America, and one of the most frustrating when the cans do not cooperate, or ppl leave heavy bags by the cans, or any number of BS 2000 times a day
Homie breaking more in garbage cans than what he makes. 😅
Not seeing a lot of garbage truck fails here but I am seeing a lot of "people failing to put their garbage out correctly" lol
Those mack cabs are built very well
I agree. They look good as well
Even the dumpster arm didn’t like it’s job it was so aggressive lmao
"Let's hobble together a horrifying rattletrap of a robot arm and bolt it to this truck."
I bet that old man that’s not using gloves eats his lunch right after touching that trash
5:35 That was more of a fail on the resident's part. Oversized loads are always going to have parts falling out!
That kind of shit is punishable where I live. You don't put metal pipes into a general garbage bin. It's stupid, potentially dangerous, potentially damaging to the truck, and against the law.
I agree
Dude in the Mega truck was not having a good day lol
These poor guys earn every penny they make and probably deserve more!
3:39 I busted out laughing 😆
Perfect example of an equipment which was in theory designed to make a process faster and easier, yet makes things worse tenfold. You can see the pain and agony in the operators moves.
it depends on how good the tech is implemented. the mega truck wasn't the best but most of these weren't the operators or Equipments fault
Considering that 20 years ago EVERY trash can had to be manually emptied by workers, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect the driver to get out of the truck ONCE IN A WHILE and deal with an issue. Workers have become way too entitled and lazy about stuff lately.
@@scdevonI'm residential rear load I'm out of the truck every stop
I work on garbage trucks and I always find it satisfying when a rear loader unloads at the dump.
Where I lived until 1991, the trash truck was the rear load type. One driver, two guys hanging onto the rear to take the lids off the metal cans then dump them in. They were quite happy the day the town bought a new garbage truck, a Mercedes. I bet they loved telling people they drove a Mercedes all day for work. ;)
The guy took the entire garbage bin with him😂😂😂😂
The last one: The reason garbage collectors want you to leave space between bins.
I remember when there were two people on the back tossing in trash by hand into the back.
Trash disposal is a huge job, and it has huge challenges. I think these people do a damn good job under difficult conditions.
Hate python arms! I run a New Way sidewinder. The best truck I driven
I drive one daily and I’m so sick of it.
New ways are pretty good
Been easier for the operators, if people hasn't overfilled them and put them so close together.
Within 2 days, someone from the city council will bring you a new one')
Ours grab the bins at the ridge beneath the lid, and once they have hooked onto that ridge, a small arm rotates over the ridge, completely securing the bin to the arm, which also enables the operator to whack the living daylight out of a bin if they see (on CCTV) that some refuse is stuck inside the bin.
Are you talking about the huge in ground trash bins that are lifted out with a crane?
Always love it when the entire bin just goes in.
That one so aggressive grabs the trash can like I grab a monster energy when it’s finished lmao
Bro the way some people pack their bins is crazy. Here in Australia, you would be warned and if you do it again, they would blacklist you from pickups. Plus they just need better standardised bins and better grabbers to make the process easier.
REMEMBER THE OLD DAYS WHEN 2 GUYS USED TO HANG OFF THE END OF THE TRUCK THEN GET OFF TO THROW THE TRASH INTO THE TRUCK
NYC STILL DOES THAT
NYC has garbage everywhere laying around so have to have garbage men to pick up it up from the ground. a lot of lack of garbage discipline in NYC. stink
3:50 😭😂oml that can falling in the truck had me
Would rather roll dumpsters all day than run the swingarm
0:07 When even gravity is feeling a bit lazy…
5:12 clouds!!
Who knew watching garbage truck fails would be so funny 😂😂
I'm dying from laughing. I'm going to sabotage my bins so I can capture some good footage on video tape.
What the hell is wrong with some of these people loading their trash so high. The city should have rules. If the top of the trash lid isn't closed, then your trash won't be picked up. Buy another can!
Is it usual in US that the dumptruckdirvers are alone? Its a complete different system as we have in Austria.
It varies by region, but a single driver with the lift system is becoming the most common to prevent the driver from having to get out of the truck and risk getting injured. Some places still have a driver and 1 - 2 people on the back who manually lift and dump trash into the truck.
Laughing aside from the big going in. It makes you respect theese guys
Can't replace a crew of two guys throwing bins all day.
That was an amazing video awesome content on this channel
Thank you!
@@TruckMaster642 u are welcome 😊
@ 3:35... well this sums up the ENTIRE vid... i mean what's the point of having side arm operations if the city doesn't use the correct carts
Yup 😂😂😂. That’s how mega does it
I appreciate the hard work and important jobs you do to keep the community clean and cluttered free so everyone one can live a better life.
I feel like the truck is saying FML more than the driver the way it's arm aggressively grabs those trash cans 😆
Sorry they got it easy I had to lift all the trash cans by hand and 55 gal barrels that were full of shit
When ur having a bad day I suggest skipping to these to ease ur mind. That poor man 😂😂 3:25 & 3:41
😂
Man I couldn't do it. That one where the bin falls in " right you fucking c**ting piece of shit. I'm not gonna get you out. Don't care if they fire me. Shouldn't be such a retard and fall in!!!!"
I remember when the garbage men were a team one or two riders and one driver. And they actually handled the cans. Always had less trash blowing around the neighborhood as well
Ahhh my 4am feed of satisfying video I didn't know I needed 😌
I always tip my guys on larger items and Xmas hope they don't throw it out by accident with these new trucks.
Where's my fails lol I'm kidding good job
Don’t worry you’ll be in one of them soon. You 3x fail 🤣
i feel bad for the drive in the white mega labrie
Same here. That route doesn’t exist anymore tho. They lost the contract in January sadly
sad
Got a co-worker that uses NO gloves and when we go eat, he doesn’t wash his hands. He just digs in as if washing your hands after picking up trash before you eat is wrong. He must have a stomach of iron 🤷🏽♂️
Geez that makes me suck just thinking of it. I hope he stays well
My buddy had a guy doing septic system work for him one time. Guy gets done, and proceeds to eat a sandwich. His hands were so dirty, he was leaving dark marks on the bread...
Thanks for posting this video, it’s very educational. Now I know why not all of my garbage is picked up. I’ll start placing my cans a foot apart (garbage & recycleable) and I will make sure to cut up any boxes for the recycling bin. Sometimes the brown cardboard shipping boxes that are set beside the recycling bin are left behind or taken by the garbage truck personnel.
If our lids don't close, even sticking up 1 inch they refuse to empty it.
really did get a good laugh out of mega lmao
😂 same here. That was a fun day
same here, not at the operators, but at the absurdities of modern life.
Im used to see interlocking mechanism on the brim of the trashcan here in germany. This claw seems so sketchy and violent, i love it. It seems to be a great struggle for those who have to work with it and the trashcans dont look that happy in many cases lol
The older guy in the mega truck was going through it 😂😂
I wish the people space out the cans more. That be nice. Thank you people i know you can do it.
Tough job. Especially having to constantly pick up bags because people overfill their cans.
Imagine having actual garbage men whose job is to put the bags in the truck.
Regardless of how they got to the street.
I'm surprised they do it. I'm pretty sure some places they won't even empty the can.
Deforms every can on its way. What a machine.
That’s aggravating!!! I had to laugh when he dropped the whole van in there lol!!
Gotta love the patience these guys got watching that arm making sure the trash gets in the truck ❤
I never saw a garbage truck pitch over like 4-5 inches and hear the hydraulics grunt when picking up a can before 🤣🤣🤣
Dude didn't even blink, dropped the can and moved on.
The arm swing should be on the back of truck and have a second person to help
That 1 guy that sucks but keeps coming to work every single day
1:43 props to this guy for grabbing 2 cans in 1 claw and managing to not spill any garbage even on the way down
Didn’t even notice that
7:54😂 give me some space fool's
That dude in the Mega MTG Disposal truck needs a pay raise.
I love that waste management just put like a magnet over the logo on the trucks 🤣 must have just bought out the company
Awesome video those fails were funny lol 😂.
Thank you
@@TruckMaster642 no problem bro.
No matter what you say nothing beats two men on the back of a truck as far as getting all of it ‼️
You wouldn't believe the shit some people do I drove a side load some people were putting paint and has mat stuff in recycle. This was nothing compared to what it's really like out there. The best thing that happened to me was this one route I had the mom would bring her son out every week to watch the truck, so one week I brought him a little Tonka type trash truck the look in his eyes was priceless.
