A drug is defined as "any substance that has a physiological effect". Whats interesting about this definition is that it also includes foods. For example, consuming chocolate increases tryptophan and subsequently serotonin. Even vitamines in food have a subsequent neuropharmacological effect. This is why in pharmacology the definition I was taught was "any substance that has a physiological effect BUT has NO nutritional value". I like that definition better because it gets a picture that resembles more what we think of when we say drugs.

@Xaviar 77versus99 Well, both can induce placebo (after all, literally anything can induce placebo) and both can have real physiological influence. In terms of the second part of what you're saying, it strikes me that you're phrasing it from the perspective of 'reduction' and 'destruction'. It is equally valid to talk about drugs as substances that increase and repair functioning of the brain and the blood-brain barrier. It's not a black or white kindve matter

So chocolate can't be a drug because it does in fact have nutritional value. Right? Logic is logic. The rational conclusion is that chocolate has both nutritional value and physiological effects on the body. Possibly a more precise definition is required. I read Principle of Neural Science. I know they were really precise about their wording. If one thing only, I remembered that shit. It was mind-blowing writing. No ambiguity whatsoever. That shit is hard. Another thing to consider is the patently clear fact that mere thoughts have an effect on physiology. So, thoughts are a drug now? Okay, I admit it, I'm an iconoclast, a gadfly of sorts. And don't say thoughts are not a substance. If you know anything about Neurology, you know how thoughts are embodied in the nervous system. Many eminent Neuroscientists propose freewill doesn't even exist. Have you made it that far yet? It's hard to conceive of that, but when you move into Physics, it's sort of the only rational conclusion. Nothing moves on it's own accord. Even the concept of "energy" was redefined as "momentum" in modern Physics.

@@Pobodies_Nerfect That's the riddle my friend . . you can't keep this thing unless you give it away. It's as if you strike gold, and the ONLY way you get to keep ANY of what you've found, paradoxically, is to give it ALL away. That's the HOW, but I REALLY want to know the WHY of this riddle. I'm so tired of going to funerals. Normally, I'm a heroin junkie with a methamphetamine "issue" who drinks FAR TOO MUCH, but for some reason, if I insist on giving it ALL away, I get to wake up every day without wanting to get loaded, PERIOD. It's been almost 5 years. I am recovered, and I would give ANYTHING to find a way to bottle this solution and save those who are suffering as I once did. But I can't forget this simple fact: A person can RECOVER from cancer, but if they decide to ignore their doctors, and don't take care of themselves, their chances of a RELAPSE out of remission is exponentially higher than if they maintain a healthy lifestyle and take care of themselves. I apply the same principle to being an addict/alcoholic. Hope that made sense. :-)

Keep the good work, i studied psychology and toxicology (im also an ex opioid/cocaïn addict) and you tell everything so accuratly its awesome! The only thing you missed is that alot of addict specialy in opioid addiction are people with PTSD, dépression, anxiety and are automedicating

I'd find interesting to understand how addiction works in the brain. I'm talking about the reward system mediated by dopamine. I don't know how to explain... I'd like a more neurological and less physiological sight of how different parts of the brain communicate when it comes to associative learning, and then how drug abuse effects this circuit.

Addiction is the tormented psychology of a liar, only liars get hooked and only honesty gets freedom. The tragedy of addiction is children who revenge a childhood hurt or trauma against their parents learning from example. I think therefore i exist, therefore i was created or always existed and the creator was created or always existed, therefore an impossibility possible, a miracle, an uncaused cause, God exist. Life and death always existed and science cannot explain the origin because defies reason. God is eternal and mortal, perfect justice, ourselves for eternity til endless death when all life die. I find my argumentation solid but gullible humanity that swallow the addiction is a brain disease lie without questioning have incredible difficulties and objections to accept the obvious truth. Still no parent of addict has said ‘thank you’ to me for discovering the cure to addiction, what confirms my theory that addiction comes from bad households, ungrateful and unforgiving. I don't have a voice in any news media in the world.

What I believe will eventually happen is social media and other areas of life such as work and school will assign a health number either coded by a color or a scan that will indicate the person's ability to exchange communication based on his/her health and well being. This will give others who happen upon this individual a chance to understand his/her background by being informed first so as not to blame him or her for everything wrong in the world. That is what happens when random people think they are being subjected to greed and must uphold their honor in circumstance. You don't change the world by cursing it through the first victim you encounter who is unaware of your situation and circle of trust.

I used to drink a lot before. I've been sober about 7 months. I suspect the alcohol has damaged my brain a bit (gaba receptors etc).
I feel better now than I did when I first decided to quit but I still deal with some anxiety and depression though I probably had that to a smaller degree while I was drinker also but I just didn't notice it then.
I think my brain is slowly recovering.
Would I set my recovery back or damage my brain receptors etc more if I were to use benzodiazepines for example in small amounts maybe once a month?

There is another form of addiction that is even more dangerous. Watching too much porn videos and classified as Porn addict. This is because after every sexual orgy (natural or porn) the brain releases dopamine the pleasure molecule and makes one feel good. But too much depletion of Dopamine (lets say 4 to 5 times /day) leads to feeling low and depressed. The effects are similar to drug induced release of Dopamine.
