You still will need to get down to the root of the prolem. My shower was like this and it was rusted through and through and caulked over. The rust made its way to the surface and had to replace the shower surrond metal.

So do you have any recommendations for how to protect the coat from rusting??

What do you mean? To avoid this from happening you need to keep cleaning because obviously it’s rusty due to be wet with the showers
