Loved that line.
A great analogy for the complexity of flavors. Maybe I just haven't had a large enough variety of the Irish, but they've always seemed shallow in their depth of flavors, even while being very very good. Bourbons and Rye can be very complex by comparison, even if you're using a similar mash. Regional grains and styling in the USA can create that complexity.
I will say that two of the things we Americans and the Irish can get along on are our preferences for 1: drinking and 2: fighting. :D

You should try the top-of-the-line Crown Royal whiskys. Super smooth and yummy blended whiskey. Also very expensive.

Darren nailed everything in this. His first clip he smells one drink, and declares that the other is bourbon. It's not close, he wins this by lengths, and brings iron livered Ciara along for the ride.

Darren was the expert and Ciara did not have much idea of what she was drinking and just went along with everything that Darren said.
Saw that bottle of Wild Turkey 101 and got a little misty. That was my dad's favorite and my grandmother gave him a bottle for his birthday every year and he never bought more when it ran out. It was just too special as a gift. I miss my dad. Took care of him for six years at the end. Glad I could be there.

To let Damon know, bourbon, by law, must be aged in new charred oak barrels. If it’s been used, it’s just American Straight Whiskey.

Also, fun fact: Jack Daniel's has sued the government to prevent themselves from being classified as a Bourbon. This is because they wanted to differentiate themselves by calling themselves Tennessee Whiskey. In reality, they are just a Bourbon that went through a charcoal filter.

I could watch Darren and Ciara for hours. Darren's senses and his knowledge of whisky puts him apart, but Ciara's intuitive response to the whisky is equally enlightening.

That is true in many ways. Up until around 30-40 years ago the only people on the planet that made whiskey was the Scotts the Irish and their descendants on other continents.
I’m a KY boy, and bourbon is our entire culture. We use it in foods, cocktails, desserts, everything. My wife’s father wants Johnny Walker blue label and I’m going to surprise him with Blantons and Pappy. Cheers for the shoutout to our beloved Bourbon!

This was delightful. Sometimes I want a sharper, American-style bourbon, but other times I want that smooth Irish whiskey. They're all for different times and moods.
ALL bourbon is AMERICAN By law. Just like Cognac can only legally be called cognac if it was produced in France.

The Jameson black barrel I instantly knew it would be hard. For those that don’t know it’s Jameson aged in used charred barrels from bourbon distillers in America.

I've had bad whiskey, but to be fair it was a home made one that tasted like wood juice and pencil shavings. Probably would have made me go blind if I had drank enough of it.

As an American, I really do love Irish whiskey, but Bourbon’s burn and Smokey flavors always win in my book.
If you like flavours and burn try scotch whiskey it can be stronger then bourbon and have more smoky flavours and a stronger burn

@@AdvancedBeing theres some really nice scotchs that are affordable but if you really want a more expensive one i would recommed laphroaig islay single malt 16 year old scotch whiskey its not the cheapest but its worth it, it has a nice sweet and smokey taste with a good burn its best drank neat or with a drop of water mixing it ruins the flavour profile it has

Smelling empty cup after whisky is quite good method to differientiate bourbon from other whiskys. Bourbon Has strong corn finished scent, which I personally adore😍

All bourbons are aged in brand-new oak barrels that have been charred. Each barrel is used only once. That's what gives it such a unique flavor.
Those used bourbon barrels, of course, are often sold off to be used as aging barrels for something else, including some wines.
A very imported fact, probably the most significant difference between a bourbon and a whisk(e)y.
They're often sold to the Jameson distillery in Ireland - so Black Barrel for example would've been finished in a bourbon barrel
A funny thing is that a lot of used Bourbon barrels end up as Irish Whiskey barrels.
That's one criteria. The full list is: "For a whiskey to call itself bourbon, its mash, the mixture of grains from which the product is distilled, must contain at least 51% corn. (The rest of the mash is usually filled out with malted barley and either rye or wheat.) The mash must be distilled at 160 proof or less, put into the barrel at 125 proof or less, and it must not contain any additives. The distillate must be aged in a new charred oak barrel."

I think and estimate in feet, miles and gallons - it's like my mother tongue, it's hard-coded in my brain. But when it's time to measure and cut the board, or bake - my measuring tools are metric. The math is so much easier.

I think Ciara's specialty is the fortitude to drink anything and remain composed. Darren's palate is astounding, though.
To be fair, her strength lies in the ability to drink high proof spirits...and not die. Lol. Her sense of taste being what it is, would be lesser than someone that tastes more of the spirit.
Darren is/was a tour guide at a whiskey distillery in Dublin. He definitely knows his whiskey.

Fun fact, American bourbon, is in part Irish whiskey, and scotch. All because the men who started making the real famous American Bourbons, a lot were second or third generation Irish or Scottish.

Darren was great, really knew what to look for. Took his time but was quite definitive. Had Ciara at the end realizing she still have more to learn
Darren is my favorite on the alchohol shoots, he deciphers the drink and its elements so well.
Ciara paired with Darren was more subdued than other pairings in the past, but they would definitely be the people I'd love to sit and drink whiskies with. I'd be curious to see their takes on some Japanese whiskies as well

My Irish accent gets stronger the more I drink. I was born and raised in America. Never been to Ireland. Must be a touch genetic.
So here is the interesting Fact, Bourbon needs to be aged in new white oak barrels, and once they are used once, they cant be used to make any more bourbons.....So they sell those barrels to Irish and Scotch manufacturers for cheap, So Bourbon manufacturing makes Irish Whiskey cheaper to produce.
The owner of the company I work for gets Jim beam barrels and three semi trucks of wine grapes then sell it all to his rich buddies to make wine and ferment the grapes in the whiskey barrels, we'd work under the table on weekends what we'd call wine days lol but there was always some bourbon left in the barrels not much but he'd buy like 30 barrels so there'd be enough collectively for each of us to get a half bottle. Come Christmas we'd each get a bottle of bourbon barrel wine

That's one of my favorites. Relatively reasonably priced, it's both smooth enough, and packs good flavor. Will always be in the rotation when buying whiskey/whisky.
Try Bushmill's Red- I'd say it's the halfway point between bourbon and Irish whiskey, and a delight for very little cost.

I have tried blind taste test (3 rounds of only two bourdons). You picked up the most of the flavors by the 2nd and 3rd sips. By the 3rd shot, we couldn't tell which one was which and they tasted very different during the first round.
Honestly, that sentence is just the human condition.
Darren and Ciara are the two best in the group. Putting them together is almost unfair.
I love how they are taking the small batch irish whiskeys you can't even find in most liquor stores and comparing it to Jim Bean which almost counts as wood flavored mouthwash

Americans actually use both metric and imperial. When doing science experiments in school we always used metric because it's easier, but if we're building a house or whatever we use imperial.
@EveryChevyChase And everyone forgets that the UK isn't 100% metric. They still use miles per hour instead of kph. And IIRC they could still measure a few food things in imperial. I want to say beer was one?? After all, isn't the most popular phrase "Give me a pint"?

I never tasted Irish Whiskey until 10 years ago when a guy from Ireland opened a Pub here in North Carolina. I started trying them even though I’m not a big drinker. I noticed a huge amount of variety among the Irish whiskeys I tried. I liked all of them pretty well and there was something about each that seemed different than the American bourbon and whiskey I’ve tried. I can’t drink now because of health reasons. I wish I’d had a chance to try a few different kinds of Scotch whiskey too before I had to give it up.
I find Irish whiskey to be far less "burney" than burbon. There are high end burbons, like Blantons that are silky smooth. However, Jameson I can gulp without blinking, Jim Beam makes me wince in pain. All of these whiskeys are the same "strength" btw.

I can’t stand jameson it feels like i’m drinking water there is no flavor whatsoever in it. Probably also why i’ve had the same bottle for the last 8yrs still half full
There needs to be a part II of this. This is especially relevant for me at the moment as I'm traveling and staying in a hotel that has 200 kinds of bourbon. Glad I could follow along. :)

I liked how most of the ones she tried she gave the "notes" that she tasted rather than just "I liked this one". Now, she *did* use the phrase "This one's a little more 'burny'" so she has a little refining to do on that. But let's be honest, we all knew damn well what she meant. LOL
I love how in most of the tests, the hardcore Irish people chose the American Bourbon.
I've had both and I've always thought that Bourbon has more subtle notes than Irish whiskey.

Bourbon tends to have a "smoky" flavor because it's aged in charred oak barrels.

Here in America, I always tell people who are trying to get into whiskey to start off with Irish Whiskey. It’s smoother and not as harsh as Bourbon and Scotch. I actually prefer Irish Whiskey over Bourbon because it doesn’t burn as much. However, an old family favorite is Chivas Regal Scotch Whisky. But as much as I do take to Scotch, Irish whiskeys are always going to be near and dear to my heart.

Not surprised that 1792 Small Batch was so heavily favored. It's such a good rounded bourbon and very friendly on the palate. One of the best intro bourbons IMO and a great daily drinker.

I live in Kentucky so of course Bourbon is huuuuge here and it always has a warm place in my heart, but Irish whiskey is always my go to and has been for years, Jameson Black Barrel being one of those
