We started racing TT02’s locally. No nice tracks close to us so we got some pvc, fittings and about 30 bricks and setup a track in a school parking lot on Sundays. (With permission of course) We race stock TT02 to keep the cost way down which makes so anyone can afford to race and all the cars are very equal. It makes for great fun.
The Exotek body and Gravity RC wheels and tyres are because it runs in the USGT class, not touring cars. The printed battery holder is because the standard holder is designed to use fibreglass tape to hold the battery in. Most of us have modified it to this type of holder by just adding a post and arm to the standard mounts, Tamiya now include this type of holder in the latest TRF420X.
I was watching the video last night on the TV and kept thinking the same thing. It's setup for "USGT", -those are standard USGT tires/wheels, the motor is a spec USGT motor, they typically run 21.5, this one looks like a fixed timing motor. Cool video, I love the on-road stuff!
I'm a junior/noob racer, by any measuring stick. But, about the spool. It helps the car leave from the corner at full power, as there's no uneveness in the frontwheels pulling due to uneven grip that could make a diff slip etc, unless you have really odd grip setup, you're being pulled out, and it feels real nice with a spooled front car. You lose a bit of turn-in when go into corners because no diff, but the acceleration out of corners more than makes up for it. At least on carpet. I have no experience on other surfaces, so dunno what people run there.
Oh what a beauty, I ❤️ the 420x and Tamiya TRF's and some of their other road/touring cars TA04/ TA05 and the TA08 for me these are the best on road/touring RC cars out there, well priced and really well engineered so more people can enjoy these kits👍, just need Tamiya step it up on parts availability for some of the older kits, and it's a shame there been so greedy on pricing there new TRF kits. Great video Glenn 👍👊👍
These TRF touring cars seem to be a smaller version of my FG 1/5 scale petrol cars I have a touring car all alloy hydronic brakes blue printed motor every adjustment you can think of , in its day I spent over 3500 quid
Yeah they are getting pretty expensive now the prices are shocking these days. I haven't bought any new stuff in a couple years now. Thank God I get to see you and Keith tinker with cool R/C stuff old and new keeps me wishing mate 👍
I’m a bit late to this one but without combing through all the comments if nobody mentioned it Body is an Exotek P-Zero for USGT class also motor wheels & Tires are all USGT spec stuff which is all what’s required to run the class everyone runs the same tires and currently the same fixed timing motor and blinky (fixed timing) esc, you do get different pre mounted wheel options (no dish wheels allowed) but all the same tires. I definitely love this class kinda brings that whole out of control TC Racing back to its roots. You should look up VTA racing as well it’s a similar idea but with vintage US Trans-am era bodies and a spec tire & wheel setup with a taller sidewall. Tamiya TRF are just concentrating on what they do best which has always been On-Road & Touring Cars and they just kinda left the off-road segment which yes they had some success but not like other brands and not at a competitive price point the average TRF TC kit is like $700-$800USD really not far off from say XRay or Mugen which are similar in price. It’s kinda the same way Team Associated left On-Road to concentrate on Off-Road buggies etc even though they made a great TC with the last TC7.2 but it’s just what their and sales profits dictated so they pulled the plug on their entire On-Road race program they still offer On-road RTR stuff but it’s more on par with say the Tamiya TT02 series of cars and geared towards just messing around on tarmac vs all out racing
Vary nice TRF. I raced turing cars back in the day. The HPI PRO 4 was an excellent alternative. The TRF was a little out of reach. But yes beautiful cars but pricey. Thanks for showing it.
High speed gear always costs $$, but it is very sexy! When the new hotness comes out, people dump it and I can get it on the secondhand marker for a bargain. At least that’s what I’ve found with bicycles, guitars and aircraft!
I race with someone who uses a TRF420X, what a good looking bit of kit, but by god it's expensive!! Personally I use an Xpress XQ2S that I've converted to FWD, and it's awesome, and a fraction of the price of a 420X ;) And he needs to cut those body posts down too🤣🤣
Might want to consider getting the trf420x battery holder, tamiya finally got their head out their rear and made a "proper" one. Still got my 420 in a box somewhere.
Had a feeling once I saw the tires that he’s racing in USGT. The motor, a Gravity RC 21.5 “fixed timing” SPEC brushless motor, only confirmed it. It also explains why the shell isn’t one of those Protoform or BittyDesign “cab forward” touring car shells and looks more like a generic Pagani Huayra. USGT specs state that you must use a production car style body and they’re very strict on what ones you can use and by what manufacturers. It’s why I spent too much getting a Tamiya NSX-GT 2005 Lightweight body. BTW Glenn, if you want to try building your own USGT car, the Mustang GT4 body set is eligible. However the electronics will be a massive investment; motor alone costs $80 and that’s IF it’s ever in stock ON TOP of needing to use a fixed timing ESC and the Gravity RC spec tires! Anyway, love the 420! Maybe one day I’ll get one but not before I build a competition drift chassis.
It is quite pretty but the price is ridiculous, especially considering all you get is the chassis and you still need to buy wheels/tyres/ electrics and a body shell etc
The trf buggies especially the 2wd ones would never be near the price range of 1:10 touring cars. Highend touring cars are always way more expensive than a 2 or 4wd competition buggy of the same manufacturer.
TAMIYA TRF. I don't know how tamiya can justify that silly and greedy cost price, when there are manufacturers of larger 1/8th and 1/7th scale high grade specification RC cars that are cheaper, that have higher build quality than any of Tamiya's RC cars at that cost price. Take for example RC cars like the HoBao GT, and HoBao VT, the ARRMA INFRACTION, The HPI WR8 FLUX 3 SUBARU IMPREZA to name a few top quality performing at their cost price 1/8 and 1/7 scale RC cars for the money. There are RC car manufacturers that have surpassed tamiya in build quality and in sheer speed of performance levels and cost price that leave TAMIYA left in the dust by todays manufacturers of high quality for your money RC cars.
If you owned a TRF4xx, you wouldn’t compare it to the garbage brands you named. I was the same, I loved Tamiya, but thought TRF TC’s were not worth the price, until I got a couple for myself, and man oh man, they’re serious race machines, and worth every cent.

Thoroughly interesting viewing, lovely chassis.Massive thank you to Dennis for sharing this with us.

The elite TRF, series of Tamiya. Shows what Tamiya can do, hopefully we’ll see TRF buggies again 🤞🏼
We all love 420 in one way or another 🤟🏻🇬🇧

Amazing chassis design. Easy to see why people love TRF cars. Very nice my friend.
Very nice.... !
Great video as always!

Very much agree on price ceiling and would be fab to see a TRF Tamiya buggy again

I only learn about the TRF stuff here as it isn't part of my own Tamiya past. Interesting stuff as always. Thanks for sharing.
Vary nice TRF. I raced turing cars back in the day. The HPI PRO 4 was an excellent alternative. The TRF was a little out of reach. But yes beautiful cars but pricey. Thanks for showing it.

That thing is beautiful! The R12 is a great servo, I have one in my TT-02 and its incredibly smooth and fast.
Its great and at a good price! I got a few as well, they are really solid servos.

Looks like a cool Zonda shell
Huayra, actually. Could be a Colt body set.
glad the cat approved, great video
_Drooooooooooool!!_
Now that would be a care package 🤣another great video 👍👍
Wonderful car and great video
What a thing. I am on the hunt for a 420x. Just want to experience the build.

Gorgeous looking thing!👀
Great video mate 👌
How about we, your youtube followers, fund Glenn a trf buggy if they bring out a new one 😉 this would just be awesome.
It's the Cat's Meow..... 😁
You are one behind…😄😉
Neat car😎👍
Maybe Euro RC would do you a deal on one . Or the RC Elf might donate one lol
There is a TRF 501 world edition even more pennies
any idea why he would swap out the drive cups from alloy to steel cups
It is quite pretty but the price is ridiculous, especially considering all you get is the chassis and you still need to buy wheels/tyres/ electrics and a body shell etc
The body is Pagani like.
I love tamiya but I agree there becoming very expensive
Hello Glenn is it ok to ask you a random question, what does C.V.A. stand for in reference to Tamiya CVA shocks?🤔
Constant Volume Adjustable I believe 🤔🤷🏼♂️

Damn learn about the cars before you make the videos. This always happens. Might as well just post a picture.
