    Manipulating the codes within Glover is my favorite part of the game. Certain codes you can stall out making their effects permanent, and that's when the games gets really fun to mess with. Lots of weird stuff can happen and as a kid I absolutely loved it.

    I agree with your sentiment. Even if Glover 2 is never a thing, the concept is neat enough to try again. Glover seems like one of those games that just burst with initial inspiration, attempting to be something different in the new era of 3D gaming. Despite some of its failures, it still stands out to me on concept alone and I respected the attempt on the N64 version.

    So glad you covered this one.
    I love Glover even though I am aware of its faults.
    A huge part for this is thanks to Glovers charm and the whole idea itself.
    The soundtrack of this game is really stuck in my head. I'm especially fond of the music in World 1.
    You're not alone when it comes to checking all the options before starting a game.
    Something I really appreciate about your reviews is how you try engage games with a more postive outlook and stay fair at the same time.
    This becomes noticable around mid video when you talk about camera, controls and patience in particular.
    The frankensteins monster boss really is the worst. :D
    Never played the the PC and PS1 versions (owned like three copies of the N64 cartdrige though).
    Colors of the PS1 version are nice.
    I wished we could at least get some kind of high resolution re-release for current platforms.
    It kinda sucks to be stuck with the 50 HZ versions of older games since I live in europe.
    Never heard about this Glover trademark story.
    Sadly I don't see a sequel happening as well.
    Kinda surprised you didn't talk about the ending of the game but great job on the video nonetheless. : )

  • @ToaKoran
    @ToaKoran 5 лет назад +6

    I'm so glad to see you finally touch upon this game, this is honestly in my top five N64 platformers from my childhood, and it still shocks me to think that if the used game store I went to years, and years ago had Donkey Kong 64 in their stock, I wouldn't have ever played this game, or Pokemon Snap (Got both that day). The game's not perfect, I'm not so blinded by nostalgia that I can't see the problems with it, but I love the game's premise, what it executes so impressively given the hardware, and just what it aimed to do in general. On top of that, the character is adorable, and I will never be able to look at that glove with anything but fondness.
    I actually have the opposite feelings for the cancelled sequel, oddly enough. I absolutely hate it, and what it aimed to do. The sound effects when the characters spoke, the fact they made the other glove WANT to be evil like in the PlayStation version, which would bring into question why they'd even trust that glove to make anything anymore, the fact the world objects had big eyes slapped on them, it just felt like it wanted to be Banjo Kazooie, or any other RARE platformer other than it's own thing like the first game clearly went for. It derived so much from other sources that it forgot to add most of what they themselves made other than characters. Some mechanics looked like they'd work well in it, but I still dislike the sequel overall, and am personally glad THAT version of a sequel was canned. I just wish a new one took its' place.

  • @MASF_
    @MASF_ 5 лет назад +7

    What is even weirder Nitro is in the unreleased Glover 2, that glove does the same thing in the PS1 intro. It is off putting that the normal glove is evil, but wants to be turned evil? The accident cutscene is much better.
    Edit: Oh he talks about it later in the video. My mistake.

  • @strain42
    @strain42 5 лет назад

    I'll always have a super fondness for Glover (especially since it was the first video I ever made for RUclips) and I think the only chance we'll EVER get at a sequel is from Piko since they actually DO have the rights to Glover 2 and do tend to released previously unreleased games as finished products, soooo...maybe?
    Y'know for all of the indie platformers that try to capture that gameplay feel of other classic retro platformers, I'm surprised that there don't seem to be any based on the mechanics behind Glover. I'd support that in a heart beat...and if they do exist I can't find them because yeah, Googling Glover is really hard to do.
    Awesome video, dude.

  • @tomodaphne
    @tomodaphne 4 года назад +1

    Factoid: Glover’s “thumb” arm is a little wider and at a slightly different angle than his “pinky” arm, even when he isn’t holding the ball. Since his thumb is to the right of his face, which is on the back of the hand, he appears to be a right glove, though in the start menu, the PS1 intro, and the one commercial where Glover gives a thumbs-up, he appears to be a left glove. Weird...
    Also, during Cross-Stitch’s reveal, the arm to the left of his face is bent. This seems like his “thumb” arm, making him the left glove. Such attention to detail!
    _Also_ also, in the footage for Glover 2, Glover mentions a “Glovel,” which might be Cross-Stitch’s real name. That’s would make their names Glove R and Glove L for Glove Right and Glove Left. Also very clever!
    Additional fact: This soundtrack SLAPS.

    Yeah, Glover was one of those games I was totally sold on from the box art and always saw on the shelf at Walmart. I really meant to save up enough allowance for it but it never happened. It's pretty neat to finally see gameplay after all this time, looks like I missed out...

    I played this for the first time at a McDonald’s. My dad always took us thru this play place, late at night, on our way home. It was always empty. We went every week. Nobody I knew at school had played the game or heard of it. It didn’t exist outside of that McDonald’s for year. It’s really helped kind of paint the game in such a strange light for me. And the levels are soooo weird. Especially the carnival!

    Glover is one of my absolute favorite games. Glad to see this pop up in my RUclips recs.
    I used to just go in and mess around with the game's physics and use the low gravity code all the time. I still have the low grav code permanently ingrained into my muscle memory. I still sometimes use variations on it for passwords... Great game.
    A little disappointed you didn't talk about the music though.

    Well since we're in a time where remasters of 90's games are all over the place, we might get a Glover remaster.
    But then there would be the problem of introducing a realistic physics engine, which could make the game artificially more difficult.

    I assume they changed the evil glove's backstory to tie into the planned sequel?
    The way you play around with the physics of different balls reminds me heavily of a little 2D indie platformer called "Within a Deep Forest"

    "Does anyone else check the settings before starting the game like me?"
    I do. It helps get a sense of what can be messed with in case when you get started you know ahead of time if it can be fixed to your liking.
    Best example of mine is the Resident Evil 2 Remake. I saw the option to change the aiming reticle shape and color to your liking so when i saw the aiming reticle was kind of difficult to keep track of with how small it was (with it being just a dot) and the color red-so i changed the shape to be a crosshair and make the color blue to make it pop more and dear Lord did it help me aim tremendously-you would be surprised how making an aiming reticle more pronounced can make your aim better without even changing anything else like sensitivity and such.

    If you think there's nothing quite like Glover, I recommend Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg. It's a platformer made by Sonic Team for the Gamecube. You roll a (rather large) egg around to crush enemies that are in your way, get fruits to make the egg grow, hatch eggs for powers, navigate the stage, etc. It has some problems here and there, but it's definitely worth a look.
