In recent years Babymetal has been experimenting with other genres - disco metal in Ratatata. Their DNA is actually hardcore metal. This song is about female empowerment. A megitsune is a vixen (female fox). Women have to navigate life between being seen as cunning sly creatures like vixens and being the powerful self-aware beings they really are. Much of their lore revolves around foxes. You will see fox imagery in their concerts. The origin myth is that the Fox God sent them to make the world happy. He also sent the band to be their protectors and spirit guides.

I'm so glad to see you're back after your RATATATA reaction. Also nice song to start your journey, it's one of BM classics songs and it's a regular in any of their setlist when playing live.
BabyMetal is a Japanese metal dance unit created in 2010 under another Jpop/Jrock group called Sakura Gakuin, they had 11 and 12 years old when started this and become independent after 2013, they created their own genre called kawaii-metal (kawaii means cute) mixing Jpop with metal sound and different subgenres along with many more rhythms. Their name is a reference to a new genre and not related to their ages or "baby" faces, is a pun intended play on words with "heavy-metal" which sounds similar to "baby-metal".
They are:
*SuMetal* lead vocalist, now 26.
*MoaMetal* scream and dance, now 24, next month is her birthday.
-YuiMetal- scream and dance, former member since 2018.
*MomoMetal* scream and dance, she's 21 and is the new official member since April 1st last year.
None of them are related.
After 2018 you'll see backup dancers performing along with them but none of them are official members, they don't sing, only dance, but that status change recently like i said.
About this song:
They were quite young in this one but wait to see Doki Doki Morning or Iine!!, you can enjoy this song with the live sound of the Kami Band at Budokan 2014 or Budokan 2021 with the new formation.
Fans were totally rocking and having so much fun watching this almost every show at the World Tour 2023/2024, you don't wanna miss the chance to see them live and performing this song like they did recently in all these concerts, we always love the shanenigans when performing live between the girls in the middle section after the breakdown.
This was released in 2013 when having around 13/14 (Yui and MoaMetal )and 15 yo (SuMetal, the lead singer), so is one of their early hits and is full of japanese elements, like the "shamizen", a japanese traditional instrument, and is a party festival song (matsuri).
"Sore" "seiya" and "soya" are typical shouts among Japanese festival and it works like a "c'mon!" or "let's go" for them.
During the breakdown you can hear another typical japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" and they're doing a traditional Japanese dance.
In summary, song is about female empowerment and if you follow the lyrics you'll see about it, "Megitsune" means female fox (vixen) and they talk about women acting with a smile in their face while crying inside, just to fit in society or what is expected from them, when they're kind to you they're not trying to make falling in love with them, they're just being their own way, and men tend to confuse and think they're cheating or deceiving like the mythological fox.
"Megitsune" used to be a peyorative term in Japanese culture, pretty much just like around the world, but BM is using this as a way to empower women despite the meaning itself.
When SuMetal is pulling out the "tanto" she's saying "maidens shouldn't be underestimated", that refers to a japanese mob film about some boss mafia daughter before attacking someone. During live performance she does something different and looks really cool doing it.
SuMetal said she didn't mastered this song yet, that's why she usually does sound check with this song before live concerts.
This is a song with the arrangements by YuppeMetal, he took inspiration from "Memphis May Fire - The Sinner" for the drum section, another song that i recommend you for your own time if you want.

Great reaction, and welcome to Babymetal! I'm glad you want to check them out live since they are 100% a live performance band, and their live is so much better than their MVs (even though their MVs are cool too). This song was released in mid-2013, and they were 13 - 15 years old at the time. Su and Moa are of course original members since 2010. Yuimetal left in 2018, and Momometal is now the official 3rd member (whom you saw in Ratatata).
If you want a fun, upbeat, and heavy song, I suggest *Headbanger (Legend 1997)* for a live performance. _Legend 1997_ was a Dec 2013 show celebrating lead Su-metal's 16th birthday.

What a coincidence. It's been exactly 11 years since "Megitsune" was released. If you don't know many BABYMETAL songs yet, I recommend "monochrome" from THE FIRST TAKE. It shows off SU-METAL's expressiveness to the fullest. Any other stage performances in 2023 are also recommended.
I always recommend live versions of Babymetal songs, however there are some music videos that are iconic enough to see as well, this one is one of them, as are Karate, and Headbanger, among others. That said... Live, whenever possible... You won't regret it.
Next suggestion to enjoy a live performance:

Su-Metal's voice has only gotten better with age. She already had range and the ability to belt out notes with power and clarity at a very young age, but now that she is in her mid 20s, there is an increasing depth and maturity to her voice that has taken it to the next level. Personally, I think she is one of the leading vocalists in metal for the reasons I already mentioned, but also because her singing style is largely unique in the metal genre and does not follow established conventions.
Anyway, as for recommendations, I assume that maybe you would prefer the harder stuff. So, given that assumption, here are some suggestions:
BABYMETAL DEATH - A track that they have used as a show opener (and sometimes show closer) and introduction to the band. Believe me when I say that this track removes all doubt about them being "metal." BE SURE to watch the version from their Legend 1997 Apocalypse show.
B.M.C - This is a very cool metal-rap fusion track and an ode to gaming with a very aggressive feel. Check out the version from their 2021 Budokan Live show. By the way, you can get this clip (and the other clips I'm mentioning) with English subs if you're interested from a RUclips channel called "For The Fox God."
MAYA - Probably my favorite track (or at least top 3) from their newest album and just full of sludgy power grinding goodness. They have an official video of this from their BABYMETAL BEGINS - THE OTHER ONE - BLACK NIGHT Blu-Ray that they released, so make sure to check out that version.

Great reaction. 'Megitsune' is a big favourite, often coming top in fan polls and it is the song they have played live more times than any other. It is also arguably the song that showcases better than most what BABYMETAL are about and one that truly reflects their Japanese culture the best starting with the traditional instruments (shamisen or koto, I have no idea on the difference) in the intro and the lyrics about women being compared to foxes (kitsune - which also explains the fox masks in the video🦊) which, in Japanese mythology, are able to shape shift and take human form in order to deceive.
It is also a bit of a push back against the traditional subservient female role in Japanese society saying that is changing I think - or maybe it is - whilst also praising and celebrating the women who have played that role over the years for their strength.
They are saying that women wearing their make up and hiding their true feelings ("crying at heart, smiling at face") are not trying to deceive anybody, they are simply trying to please everybody - so they are not deceptive kitsune (foxes), they are maiden-like megitsune (female foxes or vixens) - and they are strong.
The melody used in the breakdown with the pig squeals in the middle of the song (they also use it as the intro when they play it live) is from the very well known Japanese folk song called 'Sakura Sakura' (Cherry Blossoms).
When Su spoke a few words and pulled the tanto (short blade) out of her microphone she said "Otome wa ... nametara ikan zeyo." (Maidens ... shouldn't be underestimated). The last part of this is a famous quote from a Japanese gangster movie said by the daughter of a gang boss.
Most of the video was shot on location at the Asagaya Shinmei Shrine in Tokyo. This has become a place of pilgrimage for BABYMETAL fans visiting Tokyo. The guys at the back waving the traditional instruments about were dancers with the lady who did the fan dance's troupe.
This video was released in 2013 - Su-metal was 15, Yuimetal and Moametal both 13 nearly 14.

The “I was not expecting this” and “WTF did I just watch” are the typical reactions among first-time BABYMETAL viewers. A lot of their songs tend to get that - even after you watch a few of them! Anyway . . . .
You’ve opened a can of worms!
BABYMETAL has an extensive history (and lore) which I won’t get into but a quick synopsis: they’ve been around since 2010, and started when their lead singer - known as Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) - was about twelve, and the two "cheerleaders" (officially "scream and dance" (backing vocals)) - Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) and Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) - were both around eleven. Unfortunately, Yui left the group in 2018 because of health concerns, and early in 2023 Momoko Okazaki (Momometal) was named a member of the group. They do not play instruments but are backed by the Kami Band - session musicians who are among the best that Japan (and the U.S.) has to offer.
BABYMETAL started a brand new genre of music ("kawaii metal" - cute metal), and they cannot be pigeon-holed - they are almost always thinking and moving outside box; they made listening to metal FUN! They have, to date, four studio albums with over fifty songs, and have been on a number of world tours. It is common knowledge among their devoted fans (known as "The One") that BABYMETAL is best served live, but they do have several music videos that are real works of art. I suggest you go back to the beginning, and react to their first two music videos, "Doki Doki Morning" and "Iine!" (pronounced "E-nay"), both released in 2012. You’ll notice those are the first two on this list of recommended songs (along with suggested versions). The first sixteen are from what I've come to call "The Golden Age of BABYMETAL" or simply "The Yui Era". This list also includes all four songs of the BABYMETAL sub-group Black BABYMETAL (just Yui and Moa while Su is chilling):

This is still one of my favourite BM songs. You have to realize this came out a long time ago, 11 years ago, so that’s why they look so young. Watching this video reminds me of when I first heard of them and started watching them, they were so young. I think it would be good for you to watch their most recent live video of Megitsune to see how they have matured. 😊
Others have recommended Headbanger! at Makuhari 2023, but I actually suggest the performance
of Headbanger from the Legend 1997 show which was 2013, I believe.
The show was to celebrate the lead vocalist Su-Metal's 16th birthday.
All in all, I suggest going chronological, in order, so to speak; I think it will be more satisfying so you can see how they've changed and progressed over the years since their debut over 10 years ago.

Live is always best. Metali with Tom Morello begins with a traditional Japanese instrument. Yava is hard and fast paced. Dusk till Dawn is mystical. Megitsune. Female fox. Vixen. All women are actresses. To hide their tears, hide who they are. Three japanese teenage girls (at that time) singing about women's/girl's experience to a predominantly Japanese male audience. TEN plus YEARS AGO. Pretty awesome when you think about.

"Megitsune" is one of their most loved songs and their most played live one: 346 times... and counting!
It was released in June 2013. Su-metal was 15 years old while Yuimetal and Moametal were both 13 (about to turn 14) back then.
Yes, that breakdown hits hard and (apart of those pig squeals) the melody is from a well known Japanese folk song called "Sakura Sakura" (Cherry Blossoms).
The word "Megitsune" = "me" + "kitsune" which means female + fox so, vixen. Hence the "kitsune" masks everywhere.
In Japanese folklore, the "kitsune" is an entity capable to transfigure into a human form (mainly into a young lady) with the objective to deceive men and cause them pain. So, they sing that they aren't "kitsunes" but "megitsunes", "pure-hearted maiden-like female foxes", as the lyrics say. It's basically a women empowerment song.
BABYMETAL fans are known collectively as "The ONE" and "kitsune" / "megitsune" individually. So, you can tell this song is important!
It took 36 demos to Takehiro Mamiya best known as Yuyoyuppe (or Yuppemetal), the song's arranger, until Kobametal (their producer) was 100% happy with the final result. It may sound crazy but this is why "Megitsune" is one of their best songs (if not the best).
In my opinion, this music video is a masterpiece. Its locations have become pilgrimage destinations for fans around the world:
- The stage where they are performing is called Nohgakudo (Noh theater) at Asagaya Shinmeigu Shrine in Tokyo. This is a stage where music and dances are performed during festivals.
- The shrine right before the breakdown with the orange-ish torii gates is the famous Fushimi Inari-taisha in Kyoto. The girls were so happy that the director traveled to Kyoto just to film that sequence.
I am lucky enough to have visited both locations during my trip to Japan (among other incredible places) last February / March.

Suzuka Nakamoto (the lead vocal of BABYMETAL) has a very long career in the entertainment scene in Japan.
She started modeling at the age of three. At the age of four, she became an image girl for Bandai's children's cosmetics. (Bandai is one of the world's leading toy manufacturers, such as selling Gundam plastic models.)

I had a pleasure of seeing Babymetal yesterday. I went into their stuff not that long ago and I'll be damned, it is amazing and they almost instantly jumped to my top bands list. Both older and newer songs. They use so many different styles, mash them up together that it is a pure joy to discover each of them. Comparing - for example - Megitsune, Monochrome and BxMxC - each one is so different.
Like other comments said, their live performances are where they shine bright. It is a great experience to see them perform their dances live, also stages are usually prepared in a way that it is almost a theatrical show at times. And they interact with the audience in such great ways. Pure joy to watch and dance.
But I love their music videos as well, Megitsune being my favourite one.
