  • WD40 is great (that's why I have a can) but it is not a lubricant, silicone spray is much better at most of the thing you would use WD40 for. It's a great cleaner, but definitely do not use it for fishing.

    WD40 is a great cleaner/solvent but it's abilities quickly wear off always use an oil or grease to protect the item it used was used on.

    • @laughingachilles
      @laughingachilles 6 лет назад +1

      It makes perfect sense. I use WD40 on some items to dissolve grease/contaminants while ridding the object of any water that has crept in. I then clean the WD40 off of the item using another solvent that will evaporate completely before appplying a lubricant that is appropriate for the item in question. Now sometimes the second cleaning can be skipped if it's a simple mechanical part, and if I don't think the part has been exposed to water or it's large enough I can reach in with normal tools to clean up, then I don't need to use WD40. I often use it on the housing of power tools as it's cheap, fast and easy to wash off.
      You just have to consider what you are working on and which chemicals are most appropriate. I wouldn't spray WD40 into an XRF machine and I wouldn't use a water based solvent on sensitive parts that contain steel. Now if you just want to free up a badly corroded bolt or a screw which has broken off and rusted, well WD40 is ideal. Especially in the latter case as drilling out screws is a pain in the arse.

    I have been using WD-40 for over 40 years. It is not a lubricant. It does everything that the label says. It will also dissolve grease. That's good if you want it to, bad if you don't. It will lubricate in a pinch but keep in mind it won't last.

    I think there are a lot of mixed opinions about WD40 but here is mine: I always have it around my workbench, it’s a bit like duct tape in the sense that it’s not a perfect solution for anything, but it will work for most things at least temporarily. That being said there is also the expression that if you can’t fix it with duct tape, you haven’t used enough duct tape which I think is quite applicable to wd40 too

    I think of it as a short term lube, you can use it to free up things, or in a pinch. but once you are done with it you should always use the proper grease or oil.

      Begs the question why the WD40 company makes silicone lubricant?

    • @x-man5056
      @x-man5056 6 лет назад +3

      Why not? Silicone has many uses, some overlap with WD40, many do not. There are times when silicone is bad choice also. Same with PTFE. WD40 acquired 3 in 1 which started out as sewing machine oil, it was very light viscosity oil, not silicone at the time. I have a bottle of 3in1 Silicone oil that is in non-aerosol can like the old 3in1 except plastic instead of tin. Couple drops goes a long way but stay not for heavy duty cycle.

Be careful if you choose a silicone lubricant. Some shops will not even take the job if there is silicone used heavily on whatever it is that need paint.

    From the makers of WD-40.
    Myth: WD-40 Multi-Use Product is not really a lubricant.
    Fact: While the “W-D” in WD-40 stands for Water Displacement, WD-40 Multi-Use Product is a unique, special blend of lubricants. The product’s formulation also contains anti-corrosion agents and ingredients for penetration, water displacement and soil removal.
    Read the label, seriously.

      Do you know what's cheaper, faster and easier than everything you guys mentioned here? Fill a spray bottle up with about 1/2 inch of dish soap, like Dawn or something, and then fill it up with 4 or 5 inches of water and mix it gently so it doesn't foam. It will drop them *the instant* it hit's them and they will be dead in five seconds. I've seen wasps crawl around for two minutes after getting sprayed with commercial bug spray that's $5 a can, but not with that solution.

    • @TeunZijpGroningen
      @TeunZijpGroningen 6 лет назад +2

      Well, silicon spray can be anything. Silicon oil is the thing that you need to lubricate metallic parts, it is hard to find. If a spray contains light petrol fractions, it will dissolve/liquify grease, and your bike will stop working. So make sure your spray does not contain light fractions!

      The silicon spray is a great lubricant for plastics and rubbers. It can be very short-lived though. You obviously blew the grease out of your hub. The grease is meant to melt when the bearing gets hot. Light silicone oil would just do a disappearing act.

    wd40 is for drawing moisture out of tight places. The oil is there to displace water and the formulation to evaporate the displaced water. Hence it's "anti-rust" marketing.

    It’s a degreaser and a lubricant. The lubricant properties are such that it’s very temporary. The viscosity is too low for it to stay in place and provide a coating. If you need to clean something and slide it in place it’s great. For something like a bicycle chain or a garage door opener it’s a poor choice. It will mostly just strip any old lubricants and leave it dry.

      Why do i understand the meaning of his title, while English isn't my native language? He used arguments why not to use wd40 on shit that needs real oil.. i can draw you a picture with it, to explain/chew out/break down the already really obvious title just a little more? Or did you understand the title just fine, and just wanted to troll about grammar and being a total dick about it?

    I spoiled my connector to electronic equipment by using WD40. do not use it where you have rubber as a insulator.

      Yeah, silicone for anything in that kind of application.

      Ive had plastic connectors disintegrate from using WD40 on them.

      WD40 is not for electronic connectors. There are special products for that. CRC makes a few.

      TryDiy don't pay attention to this jerk
      I am a professional and I personally think there is a time and a place for wd 40 but as a lubricant is NOT one of them

      I don't know what you are professional at but it has its uses as a lubricant. Not for everything but still. Read the can, professionals wrote that it is a lubricant.
