The exchange they have afterwards, "is that it, is it done?" Says it all. He knew it was a death sentence, and he went forward anyway. Not that there was really any alternative. If he rejected the Emperor's order, he likely would have attacked them on Caladan anyway. The Emperor was paranoid about House Atreides, and they were as good as dead the moment he suspected them. The alternative was not to stay on Caladan (there's no "likely" there, they are not allowed to refuse an edict), but to flee the planet and go into hiding as one of the rogue Houses, which Leto did consider but ultimately decided against. Duke Leto: "Sooooooo it's done?" Emperor's Herald: "It's done." When i heard those lines, i took it as the herald telling the Atreides that theyre literally done for.
Why did he say it ‘cost them’ that much. Does he mean that in the way that it took that much off his life so it ‘cost him’. And to be sure, does solaris actually mean years?
The Emperor is digging his own grave with that jealousy. Should’ve made Atreides his advisor. He could’ve take the credit and clout he felt they were getting. Seriously… pettiness will always come back on you.
I love this scene, the cinematography, the tone. As soon as he stamped his insignia the tone changed, you could feel the shift in the bene gesserit. This was the emperors way of showing the emperium the atreides weren't forced to go, but they accepted their fate.
I’d never read Dune or seen any of it’s previous media and yet the subtext in this scene is a masterclass of showing the audience and not telling them directly. I loved Dune because Dennis treats his audience with respect, he knows people like to put it together themselves and leaves just enough bread crumbs for the viewer to nibble on. It’s not exactly difficult to understand but the implications but it’s extreme close ups that really hammer home just how much of grip is around their neck.
Something I think people are forgetting to mention is that Leto says, “formality” sarcastically because knows that the emperor doesn’t have well intentions
Whats also cool to see is the empire is into appearances in a way. They spent that much money and used that many navigators for a formality, shows how much deception the emperor used to destroy the people he was jealous of
The best scene in the movie in my opinion. "For the imperium, spice is used by the navigators of the spacing guild to find safe paths between the stars" Chills
I feel like you actually have to read the book to understand 90% of what’s really going on in this film lol, I rewatched after reading book and it made so much more sense
Because the book is like 80% internal monologue, and 20% action/words being spoken. There’s a reason as to why Dune is considered “unfilmable” and it’s literally because so much is happening/going in peoples minds , but I thought the 2021 film did an amazing job at portraying the characters thoughts and emotions. Not an easy thing to do.
@@Songbirdstarnothing is impossible. We put men on the moon, we built the Hadron particle collider, and pizza hut stuffed cheese in their pizza crust. Anything is doable.

This film doesn’t receive the plaudits it deserves, in my eyes it’s one of the most underrated films I’ve watched but also one of the greatest sci fi films I’ve ever watched
@@raynooble217 To be fair the initial idea was to film both movies side by side. But Warner execs got cold feet so only allowed the first movie to be filmed and would wait to see if it was successful first. They had everything ready, just needed to see results first. Messiah got greenlit now too so I'm hyped.
What DV did to Dune that FEW directors ever would have is all the implicit undertones so important to dune. He didn’t have to say so many things because he made you feel them. Casting and directing coming together. In this scene you felt the weight.
Would have required a massive amount of foresight but imagine a moment if Leto had identified the fact that the Harkonnen had inside information and setup contingencies and limited even the inside circles information to Thufir, himself, Paul and Gurney. Backup house shields, additional defensive emplacements that were camouflaged, QRF's, sensor emplacements etc..... There were enough signs there to at least be a BIT more cautious but they thought they were safe behind that damn shield and not once did one of them go 'Hmm, but what if that thing comes down'. That ONE thought would have changed the course of the battle.
Leto knew the Harkonnen would attack them but he didn’t expect it to be so soon or them backed by the emperor. House Atreides were barely establishing their base when they were attacked. Also in this universe airborne attacks were rarely ever heard of cuz of how advanced shields had become and were utilized. Like the Baron said Arrakis didn’t even have satellites established so Leto would never had seen them coming
When he imprints his seal on the document and the reverend mother watches from the side, i can’t help but think “you just signed your death warrant buddy”
According to the star maps in the book, Caladan and Salusa Secundus are in different galactic arms of the Milky Way, approximately 1/4 of the Galactic disk away from one another. HOWEVER, the meaning of there being three guild navigators has nothing to do with the distance, and everything to do with the fact that there are three guild highliners in orbit around caladan in this scene and each one has its own navigator.
I've never met an assassin but I'm damn sure that their best feature would be not looking like one to hide their skills. The CIA furing the cold war hired people who looked very ordinary and forgettable looking people as they don't draw attention when you look at them.
Was a whole convo in the book that as soon as the plan was put into motion, Leto was screwed, and he was definitely intelligent enough to know it immediately as well. He couldn't refuse, and agreeing would obviously result in the harkonnens being seemingly justified to attack them to get Arakkis back. There was absolutely nothing Leto could do about it. The only difficulty of the plan was it required the Emperor's involvement.
Not everyone knows the context of that guy, and this short video doesn't make it clear. In this story, computers are outlawed. It is forbidden to create a machine that "imitates humans" so humans found a way to turn themselves into living computers through the use of powerful, and highly addictive drugs. The mark on that guy's lip is actually wrong. It's supposed to be a stain from the drug. The spice is essential for space travel cause it allows people to create psychic worm holes or something. And the only place you can find it is on Dune. Such a weird book series.
I got to give it to the actor playing that announcer guy. you can tell just by his body language and line delivery that his character knows Leto is screwed
A very well acted scene. Paul seems interested, slightly excited, and a little awed by the whole ceremony. Everyone else is looks stoically depressed (even a little scared). Clementine looks like he's honestly sad being the herald charged with delivering the order for the Atredies to march willingly into this trap. You can practically see the gun pointed at his head as everyone talks around what they know is happening, and Paul is left wondering what's going on, because everyone is acting so oddly about something he thinks they ought to be proud about.
I love that Denis pays so much attention and respect the power of visual storytelling. The colors, the contrast, the action and facial expressions of different characters tells you so much about what is actually happenning in every scene. Pay attention and you can already tell what the fuck is about to happen
I loved the casting in this movie. Apart from the main characters, who are both talented actors and fit their characters' descriptions to a tee, so many of the extras have an odd sort of racial ambiguity or just a general strangeness to their features that makes them seem like believable products of a human society thousands of years in the future.
I’m hoping some time in my life this will be made into a full tv series starting with the Leto’s father as Duke of the house and the reign of the Baron in his prime youth.
There's a lot of material for that too, in fact also about their ancestors, back when Atreides and Harkonnen's were allies during a war against AI's that takes places many generations before this.
The meaning of this scene is that the emporer knew that if he made a big show of it then the honor of House Atreides wouldn't allow them to refuse. Basically forcing them into a situation they can't escape.
Yep. The emissary cost of travelling is secondary. An Atreides would not escape anyway.

House Atreides matched or exceeded the Emperor in popularity and military strength. Leto tried to step away, but the Emperor wouldn't let that go.
The emperor loved Leto and literally wished Leto was his son, it's Leto's just too popular and too much of a loose cannon to leave alive.
And we wouldn't have the books, games and movies... every story needs a dumb drama
"The Emperor put a lot of money into making sure your house takes it in the exhaust."
Yeah, my eyes do that, too, when I try to do math.

Excited to see more of that character in Dune 2...
@@gordgasperski1514 none of them are in Dune 2 lol it's a shame.
imagine bros eyes roll back like that when he busts a fat one.
Whats also cool to see is the empire is into appearances in a way. They spent that much money and used that many navigators for a formality, shows how much deception the emperor used to destroy the people he was jealous of
The best scene in the movie in my opinion.
"For the imperium, spice is used by the navigators of the spacing guild to find safe paths between the stars"

That's one expensive death warrant.
@@Songbirdstar Yeah that's exactly why and I agree Denis did as great an adaption as I think anyone could do for a feature lol. I'm not taking anything away from him at all, he's literally my favorite director.
Still as someone who watched the film first, while I understood how the characters felt about things and the plot made sense, a LOT of significance was lost upon me until I read the book. It made me appreciate the film a lot more
@@AnonymousGameWardenNothing is impossible
But many things are very, very hard to manage.
The film industry is an industry of profit. This means when something is very very very hard, such as adapting Dune, it becomes a risky gamble, and as such is either never attempted, or attempted mediocrally...or of course, with enough faith and work in the project it can actually suceed

when Leto asks so it is done then? It is done. the Herald of the Change replies. He Leto knows this is the beginning of his End.

Everyone involved seemed to realise it was a trap. You can see the pity in the herald’s eyes just before he bows
This film doesn’t receive the plaudits it deserves, in my eyes it’s one of the most underrated films I’ve watched but also one of the greatest sci fi films I’ve ever watched
Wouldnt say underrated. It did so well both in box office and critic reception warner bros grennlit the sequel four days into screenings.
@@raynooble217 To be fair the initial idea was to film both movies side by side. But Warner execs got cold feet so only allowed the first movie to be filmed and would wait to see if it was successful first. They had everything ready, just needed to see results first.

In which world is the 2021 version of Dune an underrated film?
The Dune version of holding a meeting when an email would've worked just as well.
I swear the Herald is way more intimidating than Rabban
What DV did to Dune that FEW directors ever would have is all the implicit undertones so important to dune.
He didn’t have to say so many things because he made you feel them.
Casting and directing coming together.
In this scene you felt the weight.
When dude pressed Leto for his seal…..we knew the the spice was gonna hit the fan

He had no other choice
They picked an actor that actually looks kind of like he could be related to timothee
Brooo a what resemblance a guatemalan can have with a french twink
Really am ready for part 2. So intrigued with this Dune universe 🤨

Even though Duke Leto knew he was gonna be betrayed he still obeyed the emperor's orders.

It's both lol
Hopefully they show a guild navigator in the next one

"here's your death warrant, please sign"
This is the only mentat that used a straw.

That beard is straight up perfection
Atredies knew this was a trap from the beginning, as he knew the emperor had turned against his house.
Its like Leto knew he was already doomed 😭
Three guild navigators? So that means the Atreides home planet is quite a distance away from the empire center?
According to the star maps in the book, Caladan and Salusa Secundus are in different galactic arms of the Milky Way, approximately 1/4 of the Galactic disk away from one another. HOWEVER, the meaning of there being three guild navigators has nothing to do with the distance, and everything to do with the fact that there are three guild highliners in orbit around caladan in this scene and each one has its own navigator.
@@mattstrandquist2148Yep, 3 massive ships to get the point across without rebellion

I imagined Howard to be a thin toll old man you know like an actual assassin
I thought that was strange too. He’s basically just serves a mentat in this interpretation
A good assassin doesn't let you know
He’s been with the family for 7 generations and is an assassin planning genius. He doesn’t carry out the orders, he plans everything
Who's Howard
Exactly. Leto even asks Jessica if she would protect Paul, she replies he's my son... And Leto says no... I'm asking the bene Jesuit.

I would go see a movie if I knew Oscar Isaac was in it. Watch A Most Violent Year, Ex Machina, Annihilation. He elevates the material.

This isn't a promotion. It's a funeral. Leto knew it.
